Summer was on the approach.

Warm winds flitted through brown and orange tresses, making all the brighter dark amber eyes already wide with mirth and splendor. The sun spiraled high over head, lighting the world as the filly made her way through the regenerating forest. Her aim was south, following a stream in a familiar path, one she knew would eventually lead to a large river, which in turn to a vast body of water her parents told her was called "the ocean."

Oh she wouldn't make it that far, Edana knew that much, and the nearest family beyond her parents and sister was over a day's journey away, but just putting any form of distance between her and the normal "safe" and "given" was enough to make her giddy and add just that extra little glint to her eye. But it wasn't a full change she supposed, glancing over her shoulder at the slinking black and blue shadow with a scowl on his face. Kione, a strange little ferret that had been the first face she'd seen upon clambering out into the world from that cramped little basket, had since become a constant companion.

A constant, glaring, scowling, complaining companion, but still.

"Di'n't ye'r' da teach you no'in' 'bout stickin' close t' home?" he called out in a huff, sharp claws digging into the soil and soon bark as he leapt from the ground to a tree. With mild interest she watched, not at all surprised when he in turn jumped from a high branch down onto her back. Who was she to deny him an easier means of travel? Her pace picked up, no longer having to worry about his shorter legs not being able to keep up.

"He did," the sly foal admitted with a snicker, "but he also said I could go out and have some fun, didn't he?" When nothing but grumbles and reluctant agreements followed, she laughed and ran on into the noontime shade of the wood.

"Vone," Ebony hoof against marble stone, "two," another clop against the cobblestones stuck into the stream, "three." Charlotte was rather fond of this little river. More so the stepping stones positioned ideally for her long legs. 'Charlotte leaps forth and completes the treacherous journey through the thrashing river!' The filly landed upon the soft grass on the other side with ease, sliding her already-wet hooves into the muck.

Mother would be cross. Nevara didn't exactly approve of Charlie sneaking about, running around carelessly, and dirtying herself up. Charlotte bit the side of her cheek, contemplating the best way to erase any trace of the sticky substance which clung to her ankles.

She didn't have to think long. No, a plausible solution hadn't come up. Rather, the most curious sound ruffled some contents of the forest's usually placid morning sounds. Along with the commonplace rushing of small feet a weasel or squirrel would make, there was an accompaniment of rushing hooves.

Squinting her eyes to better her sight, Charlie peered at the thicket ahead. Then she saw it; Flames racing through the woods. A short mane flowing behind its possessor like a flash fire. Soon the thicket ended, and she could make out another filly, about her age if not older, trotting by the stream with a strange creature upon her back. 'Time to investigate!'

And so, with a grin plastered across her face, the bandit began her sneaking gallop towards the other filly.

The mood was cheery - it was too difficult to keep from a grin, though boredom was begging to trickle into her. She was too used to the forest, too used to stalking after the normal forest critters. Only her family and Kione seemed worth her time and attention, nothing new or spectacular elsewhere.

How... boring.

A few more racing steps, and she paused in her pace, ears twitching back to the dark ferret. He'd drawn himself up onto his hind legs, audibly sniffing the air. "Ye've got comp'ny," he hissed at last, lowering himself back into a defensive crouch on her withers. Edana gave a snort, disliking having an unknown at her back but not sure if turning around and facing whatever it was was the safest route.

An idea struck, sparking the flame of play. She turned her direction deeper into the gloom of the forest, swerving around trunks and dipping under branches and jumping over brush. A particularly nasty clot of brambles and thorns caught her eye and and noiselessly she slipped behind it, tucking herself down low to peer out between a small gap in the tangles low to the ground.

Her curiosity was two fold - first if whatever could follow her, the second... what exactly was following her?

Kione padded down from her, taking his own hiding place up in a tree above her. Eying him briefly before returning her attention to the direction they'd just come, the fiery foal once again felt a strong distaste for her bright coloring, longing for the shade that would make life all so much easier in blending into the world.

Verdant eyes narrowed into slits. That little weasel upon the filly's back ratted her out! Oh, how disappointing. The summer-toned other ran off without looking back once! 'You should at least take a peek to see vhat exactly it is that is following you! If I vere a SkinValker, she wouldn't stand a chance with those little legs! In fact... I bet she can't stand a chance now!!'

Without another thought, Charlotte picked up her pace and continued her pursuit. The filly wouldn't have been a match for Charlie if they were running across a flat plain, that was true, but she was a nifty little thing, twisting and tossing through the tougher parts of the forest.

Though Charlotte has been persistent in her following, the other filly disappeared much too fast. One second she was there and the next -

Charlotte skidded to a halt, huffing with exasperation. She kneaded the soft forest dirt with her front right hoof. 'Come out, come out, vherever you are....' Her green eyes, now frantic under furrowed brows, searched her surroundings, but to no avail. Another huff sent her head tossing, shaking out the branches from her mane. "You're a sissy, you know that?" So what if she lost the filly? She didn't know what she was missing, that little brat!

And so Charlie turned about, ready to stomp back towards the river. She wasn't about to play hide-and-seek with another youngling. Bandits had more important things to do.
