Things that do not affect your score: length, chosen format (you can do first person, third person, omniscient observer, poetry, whatever you want.)

The Prompt:

You've never blended into the crowd, that's for sure - since before you can remember, you've always had the softly glowing rings that adorn your horn, neck and tail, matching your luminescent scales. Where did they come from? How have they affected your interactions with other Kirin? Do you see them as a blessing, or a curse, or even both?

Party Animal, that's Me!
Kirin's Name:Rave-N
My Entry:

Rave-N pranced along the water's edge enjoying the salty spray of the surf. In the velvet purple of the falling dusk the rings that adorned her body gave off their soft surreal glow lighting the way so others could follow. Gifts from her mother, the rings had always made her stand out amongst the herd. There were times that she pawed at the ring on her horn or bit at the golden one that ringed her tail trying to dislodge the things that made her different so she would be more accepted by others of her kind but all that changed one night.

The luminescent mare had just reached her third season when a vicious storm struck her island home shrouding the land in a dense dark fog and blinding rain that blocked the life giving sun. Rave-N huddled with the rest of her kin as they rode out the storm hoping for the best but nature can be cruel and the water began to rise flooding their refuge. The lead stallion knew that to survive his kirin would have to move but none was willing to risk venturing forth where they could not see. Mares with foals at their sides feared being separated from their young and the guardian stallions worried at being thought of as failures if the herd were to fall apart in the confusing blackness.

Rave-N carefully picked her way to a slight rise and called out to the herd, "If our leader believes it is best that we move then I will follow him and offer my service." She shook out her thick purple mane causing the rings around her neck to dance in the darkness. "Follow close and my lights can be a safety net should you lose your way. With our stallion leading the way there is no reason to fear." With those words carried on the wind, the herd followed their stallion and the brave Rave-N out of the flooded lower lands to safety letting the mare's shimmering glow be a beacon through the darkest of times.

To this day Rave-N remains a curiosity to kirins that she meets but now she treasures the rings that make her different then the others. They are treasured as a reminder of her mother who has long since left this world and also as a token that she was once able to shine as bright as a star in service to her herd. Besides..... normal is so over rated.

Party Animal, that's Me!
Kirin's Name: Fuchsia
My Entry:

“Yea, I was always different, the other kirin foals ran laughing away from me, I was a loner, a rogue, someone they teased and tormented from the safety of their parent’s herd. I couldn’t help, but be different, with my dark coloring and radiant markings. The one thing that was always making me different were the solar rings, the ones about my horn, neck and tail.” Fuchsia sighed lowering her head some. “Glow tail or Astro horn I was called, childish follies but things that brought tears to my eyes.” Red eyes turned themselves towards the twilight watching the sun sink beneath the horizon, her mind drifting back.

”Hey Glow tail! You going to draw the cats to your hiding places?” Taunted a brightly colored foal as he stood just aside his mother, whom was watching warily. “Or are you going to just jump off a cliff to rid us of your presence?”

Fuchsia flinched, backing away a step, tears brimming her eyes, she couldn’t help it. Her mother being gone and her father wanting nothing to do with her. She had round the strange rings in the forest one night and thought that they were pretty. The way the glow bugs fluttered about them and danced hypnotically through the air, their own tails winking now and again. Turning her head away as the dim light of the ring that gripped her horn started brightening even in the darkness.

“No! I’m not going to jump off any cliffs you… You… JERK!” She shouted back at the laughing colt, tears streaming down her dark cheeks, the glow from the ring reflecting to make them look like small rivers of color. “You all are just a bunk of jerks!” Turning she headed away from the small herd of Kirin, the colt’s laughter still ringing through her ears. “Jerks, Fuzztails, the lot of them” Fuchsia muttered when she was far enough away.

“My life was never easy, all the running, the hiding and the fighting. No other Kirin wanted to be around me, they saw me as a threat. They saw the rings as a beacon to the predators, the cats and even the Kirkani. So I lived alone, fought alone, survived, alone. I grew to be a formidable mare, someone that didn’t take the childish taunts as I once did. I had grown above it, standing my ground and making those who taunted know I meant business.” Fuchsia looked about her forest home, watching the trees, the teal ring upon her horn making her red eyes almost glow within its dim lighting. The other rings giving a soft glowing mantle about her shoulders and mid-tail.

“And I shall keep on living, surviving and thriving. I shall one day find my place within this wondrous world, this gorgeous land. But until then, here is where I shall remain, here is where I shall tell my story, to tell my life. And wait, wait for a time when someone will accept me for who I am.” Fuchsia ended her speech, tale, or whatever those within the shadows wished to call it.
Standing upon her hooves, her tail flicking a little, casting a soft golden glow into the shadows lighting the shines in the eyes of the hidden ones. Her own red eyes watching the shadows, her ears flicking at the top of her head as the rings about her neck rustle then resettle into their place. Dipping her head she could hear something moving around behind her, to her sides and before her. Those that had stopped drifting away, back to their own lives.

“May you all never walk alone” Fuchsia bid farewell to them all, before settling back to her resting place. Eyes closing, but ears ever alert, she rested until again her tail would be told to the ears that would listen, silently.

[[ Based it like a she were telling story. xD Hope you like it. ^^ ]]

Party Animal, that's Me!
Kirin's Name: Inina
My Entry: Inina sure was a taboo when she was a foal. She couldn’t remember much of her mother since, when she was young, a predator had taken her and Inina had to be nursed by another mare that had another foal to feed. Her step-mother never knew how to explain Inina’s sparkling colors against the void color of her pelt or the shimmering, starlight purple of her tail fur and mane, nor could she explain the beautiful trail of the neon green from her neck to her underbelly. It was rumored that when Inina was coming into life, a star shower lit up the sky and her mother (supposedly being the curious, sweet and light-hearted type) caught one in her mouth and swallowed, thus giving Inina her colors. But the rings, the stallion of the herd recovered them from her mother’s corpse and gave them to her, as a memento. They used to be too big for her, when she was foal, but now at her mature age, they fit just right. No one knew how her mother came into possession of these rings, they supposed they were gifts from the stallion that had courted her and thus began impregnated with Inina.

Other stories were not so kind, but Inina only cared to remember the awe-inspiring and the beautiful.

Inina found uses in her rings, though, as a foal and even now. The night races were a very dangerous game to play, but the fool-hardy and the brave participated in this grand game of “Hide-and-Seek” every two seasons or so, when the predators would be too weary from the heat or the cold to chase after a running Kirin. As a foal, Tag at early dusk was always fun. The other foals could track her by her rings and the glimmer her coat made in moonlight, but they could never catch her when she hid behind trees or laid low in the tall grass. She became known as “Ghost” during these games, knowing how to appear with her rings glowing eerily in the dark and disappearing in a blink of an eye.

These were the times she was social, other times she usually kept to herself. The ones who never knew or played these games didn’t know her at all, so they could only speculate. The true players knew of her nature, competitive yet always light-hearted in her jeering. Teasing, tricky, a “multicolored kitsune”. She knew it made the others of her herd nervous when she seemed most active at night, her rings doing a ripple effect of glowing and dulling when her energy was at its peak. But no one bothered her, except maybe the foals. They loved to hear ask her questions and marvel at her coat, asking questions and begging for stories. Inina found she had a knack for story-telling, for children, for she felt a warming in her heart to see their curious eyes bright with attention and wonder for her stories. And her stories always consisted, in some way, to the stars. From them her colors came, from them they apparently fed her mother one of their dew stardrops, and there was where her mother looked down upon her. She imagined her mother with a smile and bright, not of this world eyes, naïve but darling. Not like her eyes, the color of blood, the color of a demon. She heard the insults said behind her back; Kirkani cloudchaser, sun-dazzled shellcracker, she’s heard it all but none so far has had the courage to say it in front of her horn. Their fear kept them tame but also made them dangerous, but Inina wasn’t bothered by it so long as she had her games to play, without the stallion’s knowing.

Especially now.

The thrill of running, the sound her pounding heart, her hooves hitting the dirt, her pelt glistening only under the moon’s gaze as she ran through the forests, the other Kirin players somewhere around her, some chasing her. They were playing Twilight Tag again, the chaser was the “predator” or the “Kirkani” (they flip-flopped between the phrases) and whoever was caught was suddenly “possessed” as well and then there would be TWO predators. Inina didn’t know who was her ally or her foe in this game so far, but the ecstasy of running under the stars, under the watchful gaze of her mother, kept her speeding forward into the dark void of the forests.

Party Animal, that's Me!
Kirin's Name: Mallard
My Entry:

Her tail flicked slightly, the golden ring sliding upwards and then back down again across the silky hair beneath it with the rhythm of her tail. The gentle glow of the golden ring against the violet of her tail made it stand out all the more. With a pale greenish ring against her dark bluish horn and the two rings of green and blue around her neck, she stood out as her tail ring did but against the other kirin. It seemed odd for her to have such accessories, but she could not remember being without them though she had seen many so.

Her clear blue gaze flicked over those nearest her, but she still did not quite gleam why it was so. Why did the others have no rings? At first she had thought that perhaps their recognition was achieved when they were a certain age. But none had been given to them and though a time or two it had been suggested she give them up by letting them be removed, she had adamantly refused to even contemplate the thought. Instead she had lifted her head and simply continued to believe that they were hers and there to remain for a reason.

A faint remembrance dropped down over her, wafting as the softest down. The images had that fuzzy surrealism around the edges as if she were looking at them from a great distance instead of participating in them directly as she had so long ago. But even so, she remembered what was said and acknowledged it as a part of herself. She might have been accused of pride as she focused longingly on those she could see in her mind's eye. Her mother and father were in the front with the rest of the herd behind them though the portions she glimpsed were somewhat hidden. She had been young. Naive. Innocent in her quest to see more and fulfill that curiosity that pushed at her consistently.

Her curiosity had always gotten the better of her, leading her to wander further and further away from the safety of the herd. Strangely she remembered a cavern hidden next to a small glade and the sound of the surf hitting the shore nearby. Each day she had gone to the next tree or the next rock or the next curve of beach. And each day she grew more excited that she found new things to examine and wonder. The feel of the sand beneath her hooves. The splash of the salty sea as she slapped her tail against the surface to scatter it.

One day she had simply not gone back, but spent the night in excitement beneath the dark sky, enthralled by the stars overhead that reflected back into the peaceful water of the sea.

Her father stood before her, lifting his head. Though the image was fuzzy, she watched him, trying to remember every detail from the shape of his horn to the gleam in his eyes. She remembered the warm feeling more than what he or her mother looked like then. It had been so long, but his words were there reminding her of who she was even now and she loved him for that, briefly feeling guilty that she had simply gone her own way without really telling them.

"My sweet Mallard, your rings are beautiful They state who you are and where you belong." he nickered softly to her. His lips curled upwards though she could barely see more than a few teeth gleaming before he leaned down to nuzzle her head with tenderness.

"The ring gracing your horn means that you were born to this herd and are a daughter to all. Those around your neck are your mother and I showing that you belong to us sharing our blood and position. And the golden ring on your tail reminds you to take pride in yourself and your accomplishments no matter where you are. And those beautiful luminous scales you have.. well... those mean that no matter where you are, my sweet silly little duck, you will be reminded of home and the mosses within the cave that glow as you do." Teasing her he nibbled her ear a moment causing her to toss her head while her tail slightly twitched.

As the last of the image faded away, she tilted her head, the rings on her neck tinkling together their music slipping into the air. Her ears perked forwards as if her parents were there before her. Mallard stood a bit straighter, more proudly. She was who she was and she liked her rings no matter what the others might say.

Had her father simply told her this to make her feel more comfortable with her differences? Even now she could not remember his horn with or without a ring, nor that of her mother's. Did it truly matter? Perhaps not, but she had them. And she liked who she was. Moving towards the others a lift in her steps, Mallard greeted those nearest her. They would accept her or not. Either way she was there to stay. At least for a short while.

Party Animal, that's Me!
Kirin's Name: Midnight
My Entry:

Midnight hadn't really thought about what other people thought of her. She liked the way she was. Expressing herself like she did was... natural. She loved glow sticks. You couldn't keep them away from her. She would hunt them out when her's dimmed and she'd break them and wear them.

Midnight was shunned from everyone. The foals would all call her a freak when she would go to talk with them. She just wanted to fit in. But that would never happen. She knew it too.

Midnight had listened to this all her life and she just got used to it. It wasn't a curse. She wasn't the ugly duckling. She was the elegant swan, just needing to find something perfect about her. She thought about her scales. They were beautiful. Maybe that's what was special about her. Her scales. They stuck out. She wouldn't ever need to blend in. She didn't even want to. Who would want to blend in with a crowd of kirin's who made fun of her anyways?

Midnight blinked her eyes. " I NEVER want to blend in with a crowd who can't accept someone who's different. I'll be accepting of all different Kirin's. Then we'll see who's making fun of who."
