I have two questions: Do you prefer a mellophone with a trumpet mouthpiece or an adapter+horn mouthpiece? OR, do you just hate mellophones in general and would rather march w/ a marching horn?

My mellophone doesn't need an adapter to use a horn mouth piece. Its really weird but it makes playing mellophone a heck of a lot more barable lol.

For me, someone that plays mellophone w/ a trumpet mouthpeice sounds like a trumpet player trying to play horn. The sound is too overbearing, and the mouthpeice adds an unneeded roughness to it. It may look awkward, but playing a mellophone w/ an adapter is definately the way to go with regards to sound quality and intonation.

Personally I don't like mellophones. Normally I march with the Concert Horns, because my school doesn't have any marching horns. I like using the concert horn while marching a lot.

I've only used horn mouthpiece+adapter, what's funny is that my mouthpiece has gotten stuck in the adapter twice, and the BD gave up on getting it out the second time so I had to buy a new one xD

I'm a college student, majoring in music ed and performance on horn. So there are two sides to this answer. From what I understand, the trumpet-like mellophone mouthpiece gets a louder sound, better for projecting, thus better for a marching band. However, playing that often on a different mouthpiece messes with your horn embouchure. I personally want to keep my embouchure. It is more important to me than what my band teacher tells me I should play on (seriously, if he tells me I'm playing on a mello mouthpiece, I will refuse). I definitely prefer an adapter and my horn mouthpiece.
