User ImageThings had been going well of late, perhaps a bit too well. The small band was on the move again, and the foals were adults or nearly so, but this did nothing to soothe Abhyagni's shattered nerves. The only thing that did that was going on patrol, spending some time away, although even that temporary peace was interrupted by Lakshmi.

Lakshmi. He liked her, he really did, and that was cause for concern enough. People he liked... well. They got too close, they got burned by the fire. Enfy was fine, as was Iris, Tuyet, the children... he cared for them, he really did, but not the way he cared about Lakshmi. They were friends, family, but they weren't... they weren't...

Capable of tying his tail in a knot. Making him stomp his hooves because there was an itch right under the scales on his back, one he couldn't quite reach. Want to run away forever and never come back, but rather drown than be apart from her.

Bad bad bad. Rotten enough that the herd had gotten so big, and no doubt the young ones would be leaving soon. That'd make him lonely, even if their presence had come to bother him so, and then he'd want to be on his own, a few extra patrols, and Lakshmi would follow... who knew where that would lead.

Lakshmi moved softly through the grass behind Abhyagni, as she always had since she'd met him as a filly, the colt who believed he brought misfortune to those around him. It had startled her and annoyed her how pessimistic he was, but, slowly and surely, she had grown sort of fond of that side of him, through a bizarre side of herself she'd discovered with Abhyagni: she loved trying to cheer him up, watching out for him, giving him and those around her the love and support she could give.

It was ironic, that such a pessimist intrigued her, though maybe his loneliness tugged at her own memories of being born alone on a riverbank. Even though she'd been alone, she'd wholeheartedly believed that the world was good, and personally seen good things come into the world, like spring and Enfys and Iris' foals. She'd personally taken to watching over little Rikki, giving him advice when and wherever possible, and she knew that he'd gotten attached to him a little more than the rest of Iris' foals, but it still irked her that Abhyagni wasn't entirely cheered up by the presence of the foals, even his favorites, little Ashia and Temper.

From what she'd seen of Abhyagni, and she knew that her luck might be countering any and all of Abhyagni's presumed bad luck, Abhyagni did not seem to carry any misfortune with him, at least not in the way that Lakshmi spread good fortune. She pulled a piece of grass from the earth and chewed on it, a little annoyed. Just because he'd been around during some bad times in his past did not mean that he was a harbinger of misfortune, and it didn't mean his life would never get better. He just needed to get to the point where he looked around the herd and saw that his life had improved, and no one was getting hurt.

It saddened her a little to know that the foals would probably be moving on, soon; the herd, now up to eight adults and two foals, was getting a bit too big, but, if they left, it would be better, even if it saddened everyone that they had to leave. She tossed her head a bit. The herd would cross that bridge when they came to it.

His chin itched. Abhyagni paused for a moment to rub it along his left foreleg, and waited for Lakshmi to catch up. He didn't particularly want to talk to her, to face the way she made him feel, but even a brief chat was better than having her behind him, making him want to turn and bite at his own scales, anything to quite the itch.

"There's a stream ahead," he said quietly, "I can hear it. Would you like to take a break?"

A break. Away from the herd. The very thought irked him, but he didn't take it back. Part of him... part of him wanted the patrol to take longer.

Lakshmi smiled. "Sure. A good splashing and a good drink would be nice right about now." She didn't mind the patrol taking longer, so long as she was with Abhyagni. Some part of her, the part of her that had learned to swim as a filly growing up on a riverbank all alone, idly wondered if Abhyagni could swim, and if there would come a day when they could play in the water together without worries, though the more rational part of her insisted it simply wasn't possible, even assuming Abhyagni could swim.

Abhyagni smiled back, distracted and unaware of how easily his own face betrayed him. "I could certainly use a drink," he said, and headed towards the stream.

The stream. Water. He shuddered slightly, thinking of the flood that had carried him away when he was but a colt. Water was necessary, yes, but that didn't mean he had to like it. What kind of idiot had he been, suggesting the stream? Still, the growing unease he felt over the stream helped rub away the unease he felt when Lakshmi was near. He made his way through the last set of bushes and froze. The water was barely ankle deep, wide enough to prevent him from walking from one bank to the other, but not too wide to cross in one leap, and yet, and yet.

And yet he was young again, little more than a foal, and his parents were screaming behind him and the water was coming to take him away and this time he really was going to drown. He stared at the water, frozen and shivering in summer sunlight that had suddenly grown cold.

Lakshmi, however, was excited about the water. She eagerly plunged past Abhy and started splashing around. She just felt sorry it wasn't a bit deeper, so she could cool off more effectively. It took a few moments before she finally took a sip of the sweet, crystal-clear water, and only after that that she noticed Abyagni frozen on the bank.

"Abhyagni? Are you OK? Is something wrong?" She'd never seen him acting like this before, and the prospect worried her a great deal. "It's not deep, and it's really sweet. Nothing bad's going to happen, it's going to be all right." She hoped she could soothe him. Abhyagni was frightened of water? What had happened when he was a foal to make him so scared of the water?

"I- I'm fine," Abhyagni said with a slight flinch. Lakshmi was in the stream. In the stream. But no, the water hadn't risen around her, carried her away. Of course not, he thought bitterly, Lakshmi's the lucky one. The water won't touch her, only me.

"I'm fine," he said once more, and to prove it to stepped daintily off of the bank and into the water. One hoof. Two. Don't freeze. Three four. He stood in the middle of the stream, miserable and not quite ready to take a drink. Never mind that his throat had started to grow parched.

Lakshmi smiled encouragingly. "There you go, that's it. See? The water's not hurting you. If it makes you more comfortable, you can stand close to me, upstream or downstream, your choice. You'll be safe with me." Even if Abhyagni didn't like the water or got irritable, her talking to him soothingly would almost definitely keep his skittish mind off his apparent fear of the water, or at least take the edge off it.

Then some part of her mind flashed to what she feared: fire. She hated fire and feared it. She had felt some burning sensation before she'd hatched, and she'd later learned that the burning was fire. Not fire. Not heat. No. Keep the mind off it. Keep the mind on the beloved water where she'd always been safe. She didn't quite realize some of her own unease about fire was beginning to show on her face.

Abhyagni tossed his head, resenting the way Lakshmi had to comfort him, even as some of his fear eased away. Safe with her... why did she have to have so much control over his heart, his mind? Even her very presence soothed him, kept him from bolting out of the stream.

Abhyagni stiffened to full alertness as he noticed Lakshmi's uneasy expression. He shoved his fear of water to the back of his head and stood absolutely still, twisting his ears every which way. The birds were still singing, there were no ill scents on the wind - what could possibly be the matter?

"Lakshmi," he whispered tersely, "what's wrong?"

Lakshmi realized she was trembling slightly and tried to take deep breaths. "Sorry, I just thought about fire. It scares me. Shortly before I hatched, I felt a fire raging outside the safe confines of my eggshell. I think fire took my family. I can't stand fire and too much heat," she said with a weak smile. "Water saved me." Her smile turned rueful. "I guess I shouldn't be the one trying to be comforting all the time."

((Somehow, I want to do an RP dealing with a fire that gets out of control, something to make Lakshmi face her fears and deal with them.))

((I'd really rather not because something like that would endanger the entire herd, not just Lakshmi, and Abhyagni would have a heart attack and/or third degree burns. Talking it out would be best, and maybe we can try an RP like that later when Abhy and Lakshmi are much, much further from the main herd. Or when they're elders.))

Abhyagni nuzzled Lakshmi, trying to offer as much wordless comfort as he could. A fire. "You must be truly lucky," he said, "if the fire did not fry you in your egg. Water saved you... were you taken by a river?" He restrained himself from adding "like me." His past was his own, he wouldn't burden Lakshmi with it.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 04, 2009 2:31 pm

Lakshmi nodded, trying to smile. "Yeah, I guess I am really lucky. I think somehow I got knocked into a riverbed, really, really shallow, so I didn't sink, but still wide enough so the fire didn't hurt me." She shivered at the memory. "I hatched in the river, and the water's kept me safe ever since." That was it, just relax, just think of how safe she felt in the water. She didn't notice the phrase Abhyagni left off, or that there was more that he could have said about the river.

((I assumed it would be far from the main herd, like once we've broken up the herd a bit more, if I ever did try to get around to it. Probably not a big fire, probably someplace where the fire wouldn't really get out of control.))

((Two jobs = very busy Kit. Sorry for the delay!))

Abhyagni smiled weakly. "You are truly a creature of water then Lakshmi. A little water flower..." He cut off that train of thought fast enough. But Lakshmi needed him, so he remained by her side, resting there. Remaining calm, despite the water. It was all right, Lakshmi was there. She'd speak to the river on his behalf. He chuckled softly to himself at the thought.

Lakshmi cocked her head at Abhyagni's chuckle. "What's so funny, Abhyagni?" she asked curiously. He was usually not the sort to laugh, and the very notion of Abhyagni laughing cheered her up immeasurably, to see him so happy and carefree, if even for a fleeting, unintentional moment. She also felt herself warming up at the comment of "little water flower." A very pretty description or title for her, but compliments like that were also uncharacteristic of Abhyagni. She could ask, but she didn't feel like pushing Abhyagni for why he was acting so oddly. She was just too happy at this moment.

"Just a thought I had," he said with an idle smile, "about you talking to the river on my behalf." He quickly turned serious once more, however, as he asked, "Can you really do that? Talk to the river, I mean. Or is your luck your most unusual blessing," he continued with a teasing smile, "aside from..."

Aside from your eyes, the curve of your neck, your grace, your kindness... enough of that, you dolt! She'll never look at you the way you're looking at her now.
