Antony took a drink from his water bottle, tossing it to his father when he was done and stretching. Even though he had grown, this Sunday morning workout in the park hadn't changed. It had just changed weapons.
"You're not guarding yourself well enough," Shade said after drinking. "Your body needs to be one line from the front, to give less target space. Keep your wrists loose, we're not punching here."
"Yes, Father," Antony said, once again wondering why he had to learn fencing now. How many spirits fenced? It was ridiculous! "I think I should trade in for something more useful, though. Even if it doesn't suit me."
It was a gorgeous day, though, so it wasn't too horrible a thing to learn how to fence outside. Although they would get yelled at by a professional for not using nearly enough padding.

Freedom! Blessed, blessed freedom. Touda stretched his legs as he bounded through the park that sat near the Harte Pharmaceuticals building and let his tail stream behind him like a banner. Being invisible was handy, it made it easy to sneak out. Though he'd never tried before today. Today they were doing things to Anise and she never felt good when they were done. All she wanted to do was sleep. She was no fun when she was sleeping and Touda had no intentions of letting the brothers Harte stick needles in him. So it had gone to reason that today would be the perfect day to escape for a little while.
Crossing the road had been a challenge but now that he was in the park it was a challenge that had been well worth it. The sounds of clashing metal drew him to where two men appeared to be sword fighting. One was shorter and broad, the other tall and very clean looking. The little mononoke couldn't resist coming closer to watch, secure in the fact that neither of them would be able to see him.

"Chin up, straighten your back, and you're turning slightly again," Shade said, instructing as they began their next duel. "This isn't brawling, boy, this is an art form. You should be quite happy with that fact."
"Yes, of course, but--" Antony turned, his eye catching on something moving, then blinked as the rubber tipped end of Shade's blade touched his adam's apple.
"Distractions can get you killed," Shade said calmly. "This is like teaching a child all over again," he said with a sigh as he lowered his blade. "Go on, deal with the newcomer first."
Antony turned towards Touda, a slight frown on his face.

Touda blinked when Antony turned his way, he hadn't expected someone to be able to see him. As far as he knew, Anise was the only one who could see him naturally. The little mononoke did a bit of a hopping-from-one-foot-to-another dance as he eyed the two men. They didn't seem all that dangerous but he wasn't about to let himself get caught. Still, he was confident that he could definitely outrun them both if it came to that and his little hoppy-dance moved him closer to Antony.
"You're not very good at that." Touda observed, eyeing the weapon dubiously.

"Yes, I realize," Antony said as Shade went back to plundering the water bottle. "I just got it recently. Until now I've only been trained in short blades. You're not the spirit of a dead animal," he went on. "You're something else, aren't you?"
He paused. "Oh, that was rude. I am Antony, and you are?"

"I'm Touda." Touda said, eyeing the blade and then Antony. "I'm a ghost?" His voice raised at the end, as if he was asking a question though it could almost be taken for a statement. "A mononoke." He clarified. Touda himself wasn't one hundred percent sure what that meant, exactly. It was the title the awful Doctor had given him when he'd sold him. As far as he could tell, it meant ghost. Thats what his guardians claimed. Touda didn't remember having died, though. He gave Antony a furry grin. "Your friend can't see me?"

"Well, no, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could hear you," Antony said. "He's my Father, actually. But I've never actually met a mononoke before," he admitted.
"Spirit creatures," Shade said. "They live on a different... level, I guess you could say. Is that what he is?"
"It's what he says he is," Antony agreed. "He's a small furry fox and bunny like creature with red spikes of... fur, I suppose? coming out of his chest and shoulders, and a red symbol on his forehead. Large black claws, as well. Have you ever heard of them?"
"No, not really," Shade admitted. "I never really paid much attention to the spirit realm until you came along."
"You seemed to know Thanatos quite well, though," Antony said.
"That's because he's death." He shrugged. "Ask your friend where he came from."

He'd been listening to their conversation and his furry face contorted into a little frown at the question of where he came from. "I came out of a crate." Touda informed Antony. "Some guy put me in a crate, I guess. And some other guys took me out and now I live with them." He gave the equivalent of a shrug. "I don't know where I was before, though." His frown deepened a little bit. The little mononoke had never really bothered to think about his past or if he even had a past before the crate.

Shade and Antony looked at each other sharply. "Like Regina," Shade said, frowning slightly and proving that he could hear the little guy.
"It must have been a very interesting crate to keep a spirit being inside," Antony said, his tone mild. It didn't show how much that worried him, he didn't want to make the little guy nervous. "As well as a cyborg."
"I don't like this very much," Shade said. "It seems like something dirty is going on."
"Father," Antony said, a bit pointedly. "Not in front of our new friend."

The long white ears perked up in interest. Though he was developmentally young, Touda still understood a lot more than he let on. "Someone else in a crate?" He asked, tilting his head. "I think there were a bunch of them where I was before I got bought." He said thoughtfully. "I burned up my crate but it didn't break." He added, sticking his tongue out in remembered frustration. "Robbie won me in a bet." He added. He rather liked the idea that he'd been won in a bet. It made him feel cool and edgy.

"I see," Antony said, not liking the sound of it at all. This was a living being--well, a spirit being, that wasn't a ghost and didn't need to cross on to the other side. It wasn't right that he was passed around like a dollar bill.
"So Touda, how old are you?" Shade asked. "As far as you can remember, that is."

"Ummm..." That was not the easiest question to answer, as his perception of time was a bit skewed. "I don't know." He said candidly. "Me an' Anise have been at the lab for a few weeks, I guess. But I don't know about before." Tail swishing in potential agitation, Touda did a little hop-skip. "How old are you?" He asked back, his tone decidedly cheeky.

"I am a few months over two years old," Antony said.
"And I'm a few decades over a thousand," Shade said cheerfully. "Man how the time flies when you're having fun."
Were they being sarcastic or were they being honest, it was hard to tell.

His tail swished again, though this time it was in mild irritation at the fact that the two didn't seem phased at all. Still, it was a good opportunity to learn a little bit about the world that Robbie and Charlie wouldn't teach him. They'd kill him once they found out he'd gotten out. "So whats with the sword work?" He brandished an imaginary foil and did a few fancy steps. "Why ya gotta learn to fight?"

This, unlike the age question, made them hesitate. Finally Antony said, slowly, "I enjoy learning new skills." Which was a truth, of sorts.
"He knows hand to hand, short blades, and a few other styles," Shade said. "Not very much to brag about, really. But he catches on quickly."
