Dreams & Nightmares

User ImageUser ImageDreams are a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. The most common emotion experienced in dreams is anxiety. Other emotions include pain, abandonment, fear, joy, etc. Negative emotions are much more common than positive ones. Lucid dreaming is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming. In this state a person usually has control over characters and the environment of the dream as well as the dreamer's own actions within the dream. The recall of dreams is extremely unreliable, though it is a skill that can be trained. Dreams can usually be recalled if a person is awakened while dreaming. Women tend to have more frequent dream recall than men. Dreams that are difficult to recall may be characterized by relatively little affect, and factors such as salience, arousal, and interference play a role in dream recall. Often, a dream may be recalled upon viewing or hearing a random trigger or stimulus.
xxxxresource ; wikipedia.

A nightmare is an unpleasant dream. Nightmares cause a strong unpleasant emotional response from the sleeper, typically fear or horror. The dream may contain a situation of extreme danger, or sensations of pain, bad events, falling, drowning, being raped, becoming disabled, losing loved ones, encountering unpleasant creatures or beings, being murdered, caught, attacked, being chased, eaten, squashed, stuck or burned, becoming diseased, frozen, trapped, decrepit, or otherwise facing death. Such dreams can be related to physical causes such as a high fever or being face-down on a pillow during sleep, or psychological ones such as psychological trauma or stress in the sleeper's life, or can have no apparent cause. Night terrors are distinct from nightmares in several key ways. First, the subject is not fully asleep when the night terror occurs. Unlike nightmares, which are frequently dreams of a frightening nature, night terrors are not recalled dreams. Usually there is no situation or event (scary or otherwise) that is dreamed, but rather the emotion of fear itself is felt. Often, this is coupled with tension and apprehension without any distinct sounds or visual imagery, although sometimes a vague object of fear is identified by the sufferer. These emotions, generally without a focusing event or scenario, increase emotions in a cumulative effect.

Because nightmares are essentially "unpleasant dreams" the idea of incorporating both into one singular dust through the dominant essence of Dreams is a very interesting idea to play with. The idea of twins was played with at first, but so was the idea of a sort of split personality - not to the extent of it being Dissociative Identity Disorder, but a slight "two sides to the same coin" sort of thing. I decided to change from Ink and Cirque to Dreams because the idea of this dust had more room to play with. There is so many more things connected to the idea of this essence that can by tied into the potential dust. For certain the dust will be a narcoleptic - as you need to be asleep to really dream in the first place. This whole concept is still being worked with though, so everythings still under a lot of construction.

Name ; Aislin. ( meaning "dream" )
Nicknames ; Ai, Brat.
Dust ; Dream.
Gender ; Male.

Eye Color ; Light gold -from far away, they look white, as if Aislin is blind.
Skin Tone ; Dark tan - a sort of chocolate color.
Hair Color ; Black, highlighted with streaks of electric blue.
Hair Length ; Short save for two long streaks that start behind his ears and fade from black to blue.
Height ; 5' 7"
Build ; Tall and lanky - feminine.

Clothing ; Aislin is partial to clothing thats almost always one size to big for his small figure. Aislin usually wears clothing that is slightly other worldly - or old, traditional sort of things. Aislin prefers things that are light and airy, easy to move around in. Whether that be light, button up dress shirts and black slacks or a summer yukata with sleeves that are two sizes too large simply depends on his mood, and what Eran digs out of the closet for him.
Overall Appearance ; Aislin usually has a blank sort of far off look in his eyes, and the dust is prone to zoning out a lot. Aislin is narcoleptic, and sometimes the dust looks tired, of half asleep. Because Aislin is a bit timid, the dream dust usually doesn't smile often, and more so then not, it looks like he's really not quite there.

Personality ; Aislin is a strange dust to behold. With his hands in his pockets and his head in the clouds, the dust is a shy, timid creature who is more of a wallflower then anything. He tends not to get along well in large social events, and falls into a wallflower sort of act in the midst of the crowds. Aislin is hard to keep in one place - one place mentally at least. The dust spaces out on every chance he gets, his mind almost always in some far off kingdom that bursts at the seams with magic and beckons him in. A place thats only in his mind. Aislin is also narcoleptic, and tends to fall asleep in the strangest of places, at the strangest of times. It could be for two minutes, it could be for two days. Aislin is a bit of a mystery, even to himself. He finds humans strange creatures full of emotional spiderwebs that interlock them, even though Aislin is prone to feelings as well. The dust, however, is not quite sure how to classify them. Different emotions are like monsters and angels thriving within his body. Because dreams are made up essentially of images, emotions, and sensations, Aislin is introduced to new emotions every time he seems to dream. Whether it be overwhelming happiness, fear, or embarrassment. Aislin is also much more sensitive to his senses then others are, and sensations are ten times more effective on him than a regular person. Aislin loves touch, sight, taste, and smell, but would never admit to the first one.

Aislin is a sort of fleeting creature. Not entirely whimsical, but he is someone who seems like he's never quite... there. Even though Aislin is shy and timid around others, he still enjoys humans, and likes to observe them, and sometimes even be around them. Its hard for him to open up, but if its just one person, and its a private sort of affair, Aislin is a bit less of a wallflower, and a bit more prone to opening up. However, its still hard to understand him, because Aislin is such a curious creature, his mind always taking him elsewhere. Encounters with Aislin are almost surreal, like a dream thats supposed to be forgotten over time. With Aislin as well, humans are but fleeting things to him, and so he tries not to get too attached to just one. Because he's not quite there, attachment is hard for him, User ImageUser Imageeven though he has a soft spot for the creatures of the earth, and the humans as well. Aislin is also forgetful - names, faces, they are all such strange things for him to remember. If someone encounters him more then once on the street, its best not to expect for him to remember. Aislin finds encounters with others to be like dreams - things that are there for the moment, but gone the next. He truly doesn't expect to ever meet with them again, but if he does, he's certainly not opposed to it. That is to say, if he even remembers their names.

Aislin is a selfish being - not because he's entirely narcissistic, but because he just finds more concern in himself than others. He might love the world and its inhabitants, and the wonderful imagery that humans can create with their hands, but he never really considers that he's supposed to actively care and worry about each individual that he meets. Aislin finds it a bit of a hassle, emotions towards other people. However, he finds them to be incredible things if he feels them over things that aren't attached to other people. Excitement, happiness, ecstasy - emotions like those, caused by sights, sounds, smells - they are all so interesting and special to him. But emotions like love, fear, pain, and hurt make Aislin uncomfortable, and scared to become attached. Almost as if he's not supposed to. Because dreams are fleeting. And he should be too.

Quirks ; Aislin is a narcoleptic, and because of that, he falls asleep in the strangest of places. He also has an affinity with stars, and lanterns.
Hobbies ; Sleeping, learning the cello, observing other people.
Strengths ; Creative, gentle, intelligent and a quick thinker.
Weaknesses ; Too timid and wallflower-like, spacey, selfish.
Fears ; Never waking up, drowning, a world in black and white.
Skills ; Writing, wordplay ( when he's not too shy to talk ), dreaming.

Name ; Juniper Brookshire.
Nicknames ; June, Brook.
Gender ; Male.
Age ; Twenty Seven.
Sexuality ; No one knows.
Occupation ; Horologist.
Residence ; A comfy house near the edge of the forest.
Relations ;
xx Wellow; Freeloader & Childhood Friend. Currently living together.
xx Julian; A trouble making child that was "adopted"/taken in by Juniper.
xx Owen; An on and off friend. Constantly argues with Juniper.

Eye Color ; Striking blue.
Skin Tone ; Pale.
Hair Color ; Snow white.
Hair Length ; short and spiky.
Height ; 6' 2"
Build ; Tall, slim.

Clothing ; Juniper is a man with the taste of a seventeenth century pirate, and the mindset of one too. Instead of the casual clothing of the modern day, Juniper dresses himself in loose white button up shirts, accompanied most of the time by vests or jackets suited for ships captains. Juniper spends a lot of his time indoors however, so whenever he's not out, he's usually just got it down to a simple dress shirt and black slacks. He spawned Aislins like for being barefoot through that of his own - as Juniper is someone who only wears shoes when he's actually going out on the town. In his backyard, he's always walking around without anything on his feet.
Overall Appearance ; Juniper is a smart being, comfortable to be around when its a business matter. Usually he has a professional sort of look on his face - a mechanical smile, or a look of nonchalance. Juniper tends to make himself seem like he's always in control - even when he's not, which makes it hard for a lot of people to tell when he's being serious, joking, or about to break down.

Personality ; Juniper, unlike the housemates he lives with, is a bit of a nutcase. Ever the optimist, Juniper dances around the house daily, singing to Frank Sinatra - much to the annoyance of his other house occupants. Juniper has an odd tendency to talk to inanimate objects and sing loudly whenever he's just experienced something good. The man is good at heart, and is usually cheering people up more then he is trying to cheer himself up. Juniper is certainly an extrovert, but he's a bit stupid, and tends to be a bit blunt in his words. Its hard to tell when the man is serious and when he's not, especially when he's proclaiming his love through some song by Michael Buble. Because of his nature, Juniper is pretty easily affected by other people instead of himself, and is subject to sudden mood swings - especially when it comes down to people he knows. The man has a one track mind, and can easily get side tracked and distracted - especially by people other than himself.

For all of his emotional exterior, Juniper is actually a very serious man. He might have a smile on his User ImageUser Imageface almost twenty four seven, but he's probably the most serious man in the house when it comes down to business. Its hard to get the man to show it however, but once you've got him started on a matter of importance, its hard to get him to regain his happy facade. Juniper doesn't like to get attached to people. He finds it to be an extremely huge hassle, along with emotions in general, but he has a bad habit of opening exceptions for the people who are currently freeloading in his house. Juniper can be both gentle in his words but brutal in his actions, which leads to a dangerous combination, especially when he's angry. Which isn't often, but should be avoided as much as humanly possible.

Juniper is a mechanical sort of being in the end. His mind works like gears, and he fits things together like pieces of a puzzle, or parts to a pocket watch. He doesn't dream anymore, doesn't really have time to use whats left of his imagination. Because of this, Aislin and him tend to get tense with each other a lot of the time, since Aislin feeds off dreams and Juniper has none. Which disturbs the child. Juniper is a bit of a secretive being, the kind that you think you could come to know in three minutes, but has you guessing for the next three years. Juniper's got a bit too much of himself invested in other people, and sometimes his roommate has to force him into going to bed. Because of this, Juniper tends to get more worried about other people than himself - but only if they're important to him. This leads to danger. And danger is never good.

Quirks ; June talks to inanimate objects, and has a habit of getting lost and singing obsessively. He's like a modern day Frank Sinatra, but he tends to do it sometimes just to annoy his housemate. He's got a bad habit of lying too.
Hobbies ; Lying, playing the violin, making watches, tinkering with music boxes, fiddling with things.
Strengths ; Good with mechanisms, puzzles, and mechanics. Doesn't panic easily.
Weaknesses ; Too invested in others, disorganized, slightly obnoxious at times.
Fears ; Becoming blind, being completely alone ( despite what he has to say. )
Skills ; Putting things together, taking them apart, the violin, singing.

Likes ;
xx Watches.
xx Sharing secrets.
xx Holding hands.
xx Violins.
xx The Forest.
xx Singing.
xx Iced tea.

Dislikes ;
xx Being out of the loop.
xx Smoke.
xx Flirting.
xx Crowds.
xx Clinging women.
xx Poker.

Main Concerns.

xxx
xxxxCurrently, Aislin's personality and entire profile is made to fit just the dream essence.
xxxxI'm contemplating using the nightmare influence on him, but I'm not sure whether or
xxxxnot I should just dispose of it, turn the nightmare and dream essence into twins,
xxxxor actually use it as a different side to Aislins personality.
xxxxI'd really like opinions on this, and critique.

Ok, well first of all, I just wanna say that I LOVE the way you layout your pages XD I was looking at the one you did for Krinn, too [btw, I love him <3] I'm still getting used to the fact that guild coding is not the same as regular forum coding XDD

But anyways, all that aside >_< I really, really like the whole dream dust idea and the hardest part is that I really like both ways of going with the nightmare and dream thing. Right now I'm questing Yin and Yang and I was trying to decide the same thing! I still am trying to decide the same thing actually XD. But I think it really depends on preference. My personal opinion would be to go with switch personalities because it seems like it would suit the essence of your character better. But if you're looking to have fun with twins, than it's a nice alternative.

If it helps your decision at all, when I think of a nightmare, I think about how they're random and infrequent. They don't really come around unless brought on by having watched a scary movie or gone through something that provoked it. So that's why I would do it as a second personality instead of a twin. But again, it's up to you. Hope I helped~ ^-^
