The night was peaceful to Tiberius. He’d always felt at home when things were dark though he wasn’t sure why. The ground crunched beneath him as he walked towards the town pub and he hoped the hostess was awake, he loved her company. As he entered the small building he was greeted by several men and then seated by a plump lady with a child at her heels. Tiberius smiled as she brought him a pint of ale and he held the mug as if holding something very precious.

”I see the little one’s still up. Jacob, you best be going to bed before the gremlins get ya. You see they start with your shoes and work their way to your toes. I once had a friend who stayed up late as a child and one day woke up without a toe.”The little boy seemed astonished at this tale and immediately ran up stairs for bed. Tiberius chatted with the other men and the hostess for several hours before returning to his cottage for the night.

Though Tiberius' ventures into the nearby woods seemed innocent enough in reality he used it as a guise to practice his axe skill. This happened to be one such a day and Tiberius was busy chopping down trees near a bear den as was his norm. As the second tree of the day fell his bear emerged quite angry with the noise.

”Keep your poise Tiberius and keep the blade to the right not in front like a sword. Wait for the attack, don’t break eye contact.”As he spoke the last phrase the bear lunged at him with it’s claws ready for the kill. Tiberius dodged right and came down with his axe on its back. He ripped his blade out and the bear howled in pain and thrashed around with its claws smacking Tiberius into a tree. He shook his head and opened his eyes in enough time to see the bear lunging for him again. With all his strength Tiberius brought his axe up and swung it down into the bear’s head as it was about to pin him down for the kill. The bear no longer moved and was now mostly on top of Tiberius who was struggling to get it off.

”Now that’s a bear! The hell with wood this’ll provide food and pelt for a week.”Tiberius dragged the bear to his cart and spent ten minutes putting the bear in it; this was a good day.

The week had gone well. Tiberius now had a nice fur that was ideal for putting over his armor. Though he hardly ever needed to wear it due to the peacefulness of the town. The bear's head was now a trophy in the tavern and the men still told stories of the fight and none were really that accurate. But for now Tiberius was content to sip a pint of ale and listen to a story of a man that killed a giant bear.

Xadrius exited his cottage in the small village of Izot clad in the clean, silver armor of a knight. His sword, which was sheathed at the time, and his axe ran across his back diagonally in opposite directions so that they formed an x-shape. His blonde hair was combed back as usual. It hung down just below the back of his neck. Xadrius ran his hand through his hair as he walked down the road.

The proud knight went to the tavern and seated himself at the bar. The waiter came to him immediately. He'd been in the town for no more than a week, but was nonetheless friendly with most of the townspeople, perhaps because he was a knight and knights were generally looked up to. Xadrius, seeing as he had not eaten in several hours and was rather famished, ordered a pint of ale and some fish. It was then that he noticed Tiberius was there as well. He moved to the next seat so that he was next to his fellow knight.

"Good evening, Tiberius," Xadrius said. He gave the knight a friendly nod and a smile.

Tiberius smiled and patted Xadrius on the back.

"And what an evening this is. All this fuss over a single bear. Though I will admit, the stories are quite amusing."Tiberius took a sip of ale and the night passed just as any other day. Though today he spent the night in the tavern as he sometimes did. The townspeople would gossip about him and the hostess, but when his men would find him in the morning he was always on a cot in the corner of the tavern.

"Bars are fantastic places. The people. The food. The drinks. The tales," Xadrius replied.

Xadrius smiled when his food and drink were placed in front of him. He immediately began cutting the fish, and took a few bites while doing so. He sipped his drink and indulged in the delicious meal. When about half of his fish had been consumed, he decided to continue the conversation with his friend.

"And how was your day, my friend. Certainly a town of this size doesn't see too much action or excitement." Xadrius asked, glancing at Tiberius.

Tiberius nodded and took a sip of ale.

"Well, it just so happens that I killed a bear. The b*****d attacked me while I was chopping wood and I decided that bringing a bear back would make more money then bringing wood back. I received a message from command just a few days ago however. I am being called back soon, you are too."Tiberius seemed upset over this, but he didn't fully show it.

Xadrius smiled when his comrade spoke of killing a bear. But his smile faded suddenly and became an expression of question when he was told that they were being called back. Xadrius wasn't all that upset about this, but he was certainly surprised and confused.

"Called back? For what reason?" Xadrius asked calmly and curiously.

Tiberius began to laugh and put down his mug before speaking.

"We are knights Xadrius, we do not question, we only do what we are commanded. The messenger said something about trouble but I'm not so sure. The vampires have always been a problem but the other races are no better. I can only assume things have gotten worse, or an angel senses danger. People have been slain because an angel 'sensed' danger. These are fine times for us, but horrid times for the rest of the world. I've been to the ports Xadrius. Do you know what I've seen? Were wolves. Not beasts, but beautiful maidens of exotic hair. They can not sell them here, but the ships pass nonetheless. I fondly wish that one day we will fight for a purpose greater then our duty, like freeing those slaves."Tiberius shook his head and looked outside. The snow blanketed the ground but he could not help but feel that the snow only covered the grime beneath it.

Xadrius drank from his glass and then placed it on the counter beside his plate again. "Indeed you are correct. The wars and battles are very much alive, regardless of whether or not we are taking part in the gruesome, bloody ones. Although, you must understand, we are fighting for something greater than our duty. We are fighting for freedom amongst non-combatant commoners such as those in this town. We are fighting so that the villagers of this land do not have to live in fear. That purpose is a tremendously good one. Yes, slavery is an oppressive, horrid act that cannot be tolerated, and I agree that we should do something about it, but we cannot question the decisions of our elders and leaders."

Though he did not show it, Xadrius felt uncomfortable about what he'd said. He believed fully in his words, of course. But Xadrius claimed that they should not question the decisions of their leaders when that was the very thing that had gotten him into so much trouble years earlier. It seemed his true beliefs were contradictory to his actions years earlier. Since that fateful act, Xadrius had not questioned orders and had carried out his duties honorably and proudly. But that one mistake had changed his life.

"Is that what we were doing when Sentus was destroyed? I was ordered to settle a trading dispute before we went to see what the trouble was! If the elders have such an amazing will then why was Sentus destroyed? Answer me!"Tiberius slammed his fist down on the wooden table, breaking it in two. He stared at Xadrius, the anger shooting from his eyes.

Xadrius returned the fiery gaze. He saw out of the corner of his eye that everyone was now directing his attention at Tiberius and Xadrius. The noise and breaking of the table had drawn everyone's attention. He knew that this was not his battle, and that it was not his place to argue with a superior. Tiberius was correct in a way, and at the same time Xadrius realized that the elders had everyone's best interest at heart, and that they could not help but make a few mistakes here and there.

"Sir, the last time I argued with and disobeyed a superior, my brother was killed and for years I was told I had no honor. I refuse to argue with you over this topic. I'm sorry, sir." Xadrius shut his eyes and waited for a response. He hadn't intended to infuriate his commander, and now regretted having spoken his mind.

Tiberius looked at Xadrius for a moment, as if analyzing him. He expression then changed from angry, to solemn as he slowly nodded.

"I am sorry for your loss, I heard of this but I had never realized it was you. I have no brother and my father died shortly after and I took his place in rank. I do not speak of it often, but I feel I should speak of Sentus to you. There was indeed a survivor, a boy. When we found the village he was holding his dead father screaming in agony. I was told by my commanding officer to leave that out of my report, to stick with the facts. However, the boy is now being trained to become a knight and I hear he is making great progress. Though you may have questions on what else I've seen, I shall speak no more, and you are never to mention Sentus out of respect for the fallen."Tiberius leaned up against the wall and sighed, he didn't like speaking of Sentus.

"I understand, sir. I'm truly sorry for your loss as well," Xadrius said sincerely.

The knight drank from his glass again and raised a hand and made a gesture that caught the attention of the bartender. He came to Xadrius, and the knight promptly asked for another glass of ale. The bartender returned soon after with another mug, this one filled to the brim with a light-brown liquid. Xadrius drank and savored the ale.
