I was wondering if anyone knew much about raw diets. Is there some form of benefit to eating a mainly raw diet as opposed to cooked?

Well, I honestly don't know much about raw diets, so you can pretty much disregard this post, but I'm under the impression that cooking some produce takes important nutrients out, but there are also foods that are only edible when cooked (artichoke, for example). There are also different methods of cooking that gives the best result to nutrition as opposed to other methods (baking instead of frying/sauteeing, steaming instead of boiling, etc, depends on what you're cooking).
I hate to suggest a simple Google search because it's difficult to take anything off of the internet these days as guidelines for living, but if you don't hear from anyone else here, it might be something to try out. smile

I've read some about it but I am by no means an expert. The idea is that you shouldn't heat food above 114-118 degrees F in order to preserve the enzymes in the food. The more enzyme-rich food you consume, the less it taxes your body because your immune system doesn't need to spend all that extra energy creating enzymes to digest and shuttle said enzymes.
You can imagine why'd you get less sick. =]

I've read a little about it, but my mother is more of a raw fanatic than I am. I do know that eating raw foods allows your body to make full potential of all the nutrients in the foods where as with cooked foods, some of the nutrients become inactive.
If you want more nutritional information, I know one of the big sites my mom goes to is www.hacres.com
I hope that helps!

What do you mean, a hot stomach? You don't need any special kind of stomach to go raw. However, if you are planning on switching to a raw food diet, do so in stages. If you do it all at once you will most likely have some serious upset stomach and diahrea (both my mom and I experienced this mistake and i've heard it from many others).
However, if you do it starting with one meal a day, five days a week, then continue implementing raw food gradually, your stomach should do fine. smile

I was a "raw vegan" for about 8 months and absolutely loved it. The one thing (for me) that causes the most trouble in transitioning from a typical American diet to a raw vegan diet is purely a social issue. Going out with friends, family dinners, etc. cause me much grief. No one understands my desire to live an optimal life. I love the energy I have when I eat clean, uncooked foods. Everything just flows so much more naturally. I really, really do prefer eating plants over animal flesh/secretions. Here are some fabulous links for anyone interested in the raw food lifestyle: ) http://www.goneraw.com/http://www.giveittomeraw.comhttp://www.shazzie.com/http://www.rawguru.com/http://www.rawfu.com/There are TONS of fantastic raw websites out there! You just need to open your eyes and find them wink I hope you all find what you're looking for. I do plan to come back to this 'guild' frequently, because I feel like I need to take that definitive step in the right direction, towards a raw foods lifestyle.

A lot of the "science" behind the raw diet is pure BS. Aside from that, absolutely nothing wrong with eating as many fresh, raw fruits and veggies as you can.

What is the science behind the raw diet? I would agree with you, but I've never heard of such scientific information. If you eat clean (raw, vegan, organic) you will be thin and gorgeous wink Just my opinion.

What's with the view of raw vegans that they all do it to be thin/gorgeous?
I like eating raw food because when I do it right (or when I go to a raw restaurant) it's delicious.
You can overeat doing anything, is raw veganism going to be the new 'veganism makes you skinny' myth?

I'm going raw vegan (again) because no other way of living has ever made me feel HALF as amazing as raw. Does that make sense? I'm coming off of my antidepressants, I'm exercising and I'm meditating all the time, because I know my body/mind/spirit will have the proper fuel to do their jobs, exceptionally well smile It's just so exciting! ^_^ Sorry... raw food energy, LOL! P.S. I'm so looking forward to only needing to sleep 2-4 hours per night ;-D
