Rune suggested we go out, find a place away from the city, let Steve run around, do some father/son type bonding. Maybe it'll help things at home, give us a little understanding beyond this current roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote relationship that often developed despite the books, and the charm, and all the help he was going to get.

Steve was in that bag again, being swung through the air with a gleeful laugh from the child, and even a little chuckle from the magesmith himself. The walls of Durem were far behind. While the roads were well traveled, and even by Yamazaki himself in years gone past, it had been another lifetime since he left the city.

The world was new and fresh. The soft breeze coming from the warm sea was cool and comforting. The sun was bright and shining, and there wasn't a soul in sight.

Yamazaki reached down, rubbing Steve's head gently as they crested a hill, and down below was a large pond, or small lake, depending on how you look at it. Crystal clear, shallow, and quiet, surrounded by tall grasses and rolling hills it looked like something right out of a painting. Fish played, the water splashing where they leapt for the sky or snagged a water striding bug.

"Welcome to Crystal Lake Steve..."

A short jog down the hill to the shore, Yamazaki giving Steve one last time monster spin around the world, and they were there. He set down the bag, letting the little kid roll out, quite dizzy from all the swinging and spinning that he just loved so much.

The magesmith took in a deep breath of that clean, country air, enjoying a moment where there were neither the sounds of the city, nor the sounds of the baby, as he was still trying to get his bearings after that last, monster spin.

Peeling off his shirt and stripping down to his scivies, tossing his boots aside Yamazaki smiled down at Steve. He wasn't in his normal bundle of cloth and clothes, no, he was dressed only in some sandles, securly strapped on and baby proof (Or so the book told him), and in some little red swimming trunks.

The magesmith smiled, picking up Steve and walking out into the cold clear waters of Crystal Lake. He waded out until he was waist deep, and dipped down Steve towards the water, holding him horizontal just inches from the surface.

The child's hands dipped down, splashing the water around, letting out a loud laugh as he started thrashing up a torrent of waterdrops, soaking both would be ninja and would be father.

And then Yamazaki lowered him into the watere, taking his hands away. As babies do, Steve floated, kicking arms and legs, splashing wildly, and from his laughs, seeming to have a good time. He moved a little, not exactly swimming, just movement from thrashing around wildly without direction.

Slowly he started to sink, and Yamazaki's hands were there, holding him up, "Having fun little one?"

Steve reached out, clinging to the older, larger man as he pulled him up out of the water. He could already see the signs that the child was preparing for one of those head splitting cries. Instead of waiting for that delivery of pain and suffering, he start to slip backwards, floating on the surface, belly to the sky, with the little ninja riding there like Huck Fin on his raft.

Steve cooed, falling forward and clutching onto the Guardian, fearing that he was going to fall off as Yamazaki started a very lazy butterfly type backstroke, heading off to the center of the lake, and farther from the safety of dry land.

"I'm told, when you're born, still riding within your mother, you are surrounded by water. That's why the water is comforting, reminding you of that dark, cozy place, where you were so closely connected to another living being, closer than you ever will be again..." Yamazaki told Steve, sure that the child couldn't understand what he was saying. Still he felt he had to talk as he stopped swimming, and merely floated on the surface. "That's why children float, being born in water like that. Not sure myself... but swimming, is something, almost mystical to me, a connection to the world... hope someday you can share it, feel that same connection... sigh... you don't understand any of this, do you?"

Steve's answer was to roll off Yamazaki, plopping into the water, flailing wildly and having a good time in the cold, clear waters.

It was a good hour, swimming, splashing, enjoying a hot day and the cool water, before the magesmith ferried Steve back towards the shore, the little kid still energetic, but his cooridination, or lack thereof showing that fatigue was setting in. He almost slipped off Yamazaki three times, each time being caught by a deft, strong hand, propping him back up before he took a snooze in the water.

Finally, Yamazaki pulled ashore, almost as tired as Steve, having worked up a sweat swimming, and helping the kid as he became acclimatized to the water and started to learn how to fend for himself. He never knew how draining it would be. Probably wouldn't have done this, he thought cynically, as quite a few spots feel numb.

He tucked in Steve inside the bag, after pulling out a small, square tin from within. The little ninja curled up inside, and soon was snoring away a soft rythm that seemed so perfectly meshed with this warm, lazy day.

Yamazaki popped the tin, pulling out half of sandwich, cut diagnally. He chew thoughtfully on it while he laid back, staring at the clouds, and listening to Steve sleep soundly.

Steve awoke from his nap, when the sun was low in the sky. Yamazaki shared the last half of the sandwich with the child, chewing for the child, since he wasn't quite up to solid foods yet. When they finished, the child looked refreshed, and just itching to do, something, anything.

Yamazaki smiled, taking him up in one arm, and starting a slow, leisurely walk around the lake. There were always interesting things, upon the shore, things that he was certain the curious child would at least show interest in. He tickled Steve along the way, listening to him giggle and his body convulse with laughter.

Halfway around the lake, was when Steve cried out, making grabby hands at something on the ground. Yamazaki stopped, looking over and seeing a four foot long stick, about one and a half inches thick, mostly arrow straight, with just one knot sticking out.

He smiled, bending down at the knees, and letting Steve down to the ground. When he was a kid he had a stick like that, pretending it was some mage's staff, or a soldier's spear, playing those simple, fun games a child does.

Steve crawled slowly towards the stick, reaching out, and clinging to it with arms and legs. He looked something like a giant caterpillar, inching his way along the stick, clinging to it, and laughing, his baby chub shaking like jelly.

Yamazaki picked up Steve, but the child refused to let go of The Stick. Laughing to himself, the magesmith resolved just to carry both child and stick, until they completed the circuit around the lake, at least.

Carrying the little would be ninja around the lake, many wonderous things were found. And constantly Steve wanted them. Sadly he only had two hands, otherwise they might have ended up with a king's ransom of oddity and interesting items. Frogs, newts, a crawdad, interesting flowers, intersting rocks, even some animal teeth, probably from wild wolves.

One however, trumped all. It was the grandaddy, and even ranked higher than the stick. Grabby hands were all over it, and Steve practically tackled it.

There, on the ground, near a pile of rocks, was a single round egg shaped rock. It was cracked in twain, and inside, was the glimer of purple crystal in the sunlight. Steve was over it in a moment, wiggling out of the magesmith's grip, and over the egg so fast Yamazaki swore he must have done that teleportation thing. It took several minutes to pry the would be ninja up, as he clung to those rocks like no tomorrow.

Finally however, it was done, Yamazaki was back around the lake, loading Steve into the bag with his two halves of a thunder egg falling to the bottom, and the stick firmly grasped in his hands, being waved through the air enthuiastically as Yamazaki lifted the bag, and started the long trek home in the fading daylight.

Rune was right, he thought, we did bond a little.

Wolfey was pleasently surprised to get an invitation from Mr. Yamazaki for Ani and him to join in a camping trip. Ever since he told Ani they were going camping with Steve and his dad he was bouncing off the walls with excitment. Ani thought Steve was cool and he wanted to show him the new things he could do. Not to mention this camping trip would be the first big boy thing he had gotten to do since growing.

"Da-uh can I bring my fire gauntlet?"

"Now Ani I've told that is only to be taken out in case of--"

"An emergency, I know just wanted Stevie to see it!"

Wolfey ruffled his hair then put their packed backpack on. They made their way easily to the camping site. without getting lost for once, Yamazaki had given Wolfey some excellent directions. It was dusk but they could see the camp fire when they got into the clearing Wolfey waved "Hellooooooo Mr Yamazaki!"

((cough, not as the spring festivus. Same place as this quest. Lake. No forest nearby.))

By the shore there was the fire, with two bodies huddled close to it, upwind from the smoke, holding near the base of the fire a twig each, speared with a small trout sized fish. The crackle of the fire was cloud, and the smell of woodsmoke inviting, though the two of them made no move to wave the two of them over.

Yamazaki's voice though did answer, calling from the fire, "Come on over, have a seat."

Ani let go of Wolfey's hand and ran over as fast as his little legs would carry him then skidded to a halt grinning for ear to ear. "Hey Stevie, hello Stevie's da-uh... I mean dad! How are you doing?"

Wolfey soon caught up to Ani and set their backpack down and bowed slightly to Yamazaki. Then he sat on the sand getting Ani to calm down enough to sit as well. "I'd like to thank you for inviting us to go camping. This is a beautiful spot." He looked around and smiled then returned his gaze to Yamazaki.

Well now, looking at Ninja Steve, and Yamazaki, something, strange, might have been noticed. Like the lack of faces, hidden from a distance by hoods pulled low. They still smelled like them. It was there clothes, just rather instead of a body inside, it seemed like it was filled with straw, the contents of their packs, etc.

From behind and upwind of Ani and Wolfey, came the two, stripped down to their swimming trunks, moving silently. Yamazaki held a small blade in his hand, poking it at Wolfey's back, a deep, distorted voice saying, "Reach for the sky..."

Even Steve got into it, holding out a stick to poke between Ani's shoulders, though he said nothing, a huge smile was on his face at having tricked the two.

(( *pokes you* Damnit you tricked me! *L* ))

Wolfey raised his arms over his head now realizing the two by the fire hadn't moved the whole time Ani and him had been there. Ani yipped and jump into Wolfey's lap when he felt the stick poke hm in the back.

"So do you stick up every person you invite to go camping or are we just special?"

Ani looked over Wolfey's shoulder than grinned. "Stevie is dat you?"

Yamzaki laughed, flipping his sword up into the air, his hand snatching it in one fluid swipe, returning it to his hip. There was a wide grin on his face, as he walked over, pushing the fake Yamazaki over, taking his place.

"Part of camping, pranks and all," he told the man smoothly, checking over his fish, "It'll be done in a little bit. If you want some fish yourself, it'll take a bit to catch it."

Steve hoisted Stick over his head, howling at the moon. He was jumping around, swinging the oversized Stick in the air, barely able to keep onto his feet. Finally his victory dance over, he stopped and faced Aniwaya again, "I learn lots. You wanna see what I learn?"
PostPosted: Tue Apr 18, 2006 2:28 pm

"I was right, I need to be more on my toes around you Mr Yamazaki." Wolfey chuckled then his belly growled. "So its hard to catch fish around here? I guess I'll go find two for Ani and I, if you don't mind having to watch both of the kids."

Wolfey walks over to the lakes edge and strips off his tartan kilt and shirt, being true to his Scottish heritage not wear a stitch of clothing under his kilt, he then dives into the lake going on a fish hunt.

Ani sat and giggled watching Steve spin his Stick, he remembered the Stick from their first meeting. "I learned some new stuff too! Show me what you learned I'll show you what I learned."

"Mister Line Guy did this one..." Steve said, and there was a strange cast about his eyes, almost, dark. At the very least, he looked quite mischeivous right now, especially with that too enthusiastic smile on his face.

He remained still for a moment, his eyes flicking over the area, watching and studying someting that Ani could seem to see. Maybe following one of the gnats that were flying about.

His hand reached out, snapping into a fist, catching something in the middle of the cool nighttime air. His hand snapped back in a sharp tug, pivoting on his back foot to throw his whole weight into it. It being a strand of Sin'oka energy he was holding. One that just happened to be attached to Ani's chest.

After the sharp tug, the energy came back into his hand, glowing slightly as he took control of it, sending a tight little ball of energy back towards the wolf kid.

Yamazaki watchef rom the fire, his interest piqued, ready to step in if things got a little out of hand. But then again, Steve had been talking about 'settling' the fight that was interrupted ever since that day...
