So what has ever touched you or had an impact on you in your life from songs, movies, pieces of art, things that just hit you and just leave an unshakable feeling in you.

Personally my latest was upon listening to a song called Kristy are you doing ok by the Offspring by chance, it hit me and then when I read the lyrics it left me with an even deeper impression, this time it was different in it was a deep sense of disgust with humanity stronger than usual, but It had a profound impact none the less.

so discuss.

The first time I discovered Breathe No More by Evanescence was right after Megan and I had one of our biggest fights. I just sat and listened to that song over and over and over (it was her favorite band at the time) and then something just hit me and I started bawling. I apologized and we made up the next day.

Smack by Melvin Burgess, my #1 favorite book, also made a huge impact on me the first time I read it. Influenced my dreams and definitely changed my way of perceiving the world for awhile.

Music, Movies and Literature always influence me in deeply emotional ways though. It's just how I am.

Do people count?
If so, my cousin. She's the one responsible for sorta getting me into the goth whatever, I thought she was the coolest person ever. We used to talk all the time over the internet, she got me into Gaia [my username, Nyz, comes from her]. In a way she sort of saved my life. But then I realized she was actually just a really shallow person with no ambition, very little intelligence, and a bad taste in fashion. I decided I didn't want to be anything like her at all, so I began completely redesigning myself and my personality so that I'd never be like her. Here I am. smile

rock and metal ingeneral have opened my eyes. I suppose the song B.y.o.b. by System could be considered my life's philosophy.

The song "Orestes" by A Perfect Circle.

It was playing at the most perfect, most horrible moment of my life.
And it is the most beautiful and depressing song I've ever heard.

Coheed and Cambria enacted a total directional shift in the way I write music, if that counts. They and a few other bands have actually had an effect on the way I perceive certain things as well.
It may sound odd, but Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was something that had a big impact on me -- after the first couple of issues, it's pretty much entirely philosophy, and that philosophy closely mirrors my own. Essentially, it took the way I was seeing things and focused it. Gave it a way to be described and shared. It was a way of wording things that I didn't have before that.
I've had dreams before that did that. Once, in my dreams, I had a recurring character. A mermaid, I suppose you'd call her, though by the end of her first appearance she'd shifted into an entirely human form. She showed up in a lot of my dreams after that, and I suppose she essentially became a confidant of mine. I debated for a while as to whether or not she was real (in a spiritual sense, not an actual physical entity), and never really came to a full conclusion, though I certainly had the feeling she was. Of course, I could just be insane, but I doubt it.
I've also had situations in which I found myself interpreted through my dreams, and because of them I found resolution.
The books 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 have also had a large impact on how I perceive the world.
As for movies, I'd say The Last Samurai had an effect.

In the way of people, I'd name my brother as a huge contributor to my current character. My fondness for archaic or unusual vernacular is a direct result of his fondness for it, as are my fondnesses for certain genres of video games, movies, comics in general, and philosophy. I suppose my use of surreal or simply unusual humor are also a result of his influence -- he once had a cat he named 'Mr', pronounced "Merr." My fondness for independent music and movies came from him, too. My brother is very much one quite outside conventional society, and is a very amusing person. He also has John Lennon quotes on his MySpace page, apparently.
