Fish knew you could surf on water, and if you had the right sort of board you could more or less surf down the street. But what about other places? It was lunch time, and he was running around the grounds of liberty center looking for places to try jumping off of in hopes of coming up with some kind of cool trick or catching major air.

The picnic tables and benches were sort of a successful venture. The playground had been fun for about five minutes before the teachers caught on to what he was doing and told him very crossly to stop. He'd been on his way to go get his sandwich out of his cubby when he passed the staircase in the main hall.

The banister was calling his name. He could hear it whispering, "Phineas, Phineas, I am the object of your quest, Phineas!" and he knew it was serious because it knew his real name.

Fish needed no more convincing. He ran up the stairs two at a time and climbed up onto the railing. He kicked off his shoes and steadied himself, and then tilted down onto the slope.

His socks made it a slippery ride, and he rapidly gained speed. It was pretty awesome until he got towards the bottom, when he began to lose his balance.

"Woah!" yelled Fish, and tumbled forwards into the hallway.

He landed straight across the path of one Miss Ylaine Taylor, level three, who looked none to pleased with this intrusion into her trajectory. "Excuse me," she said, but from her tone it was very clear that she had no intention of being polite. Whatever hope there might have been for forgiveness was completely destroyed by the look of pure, unadulterated disapproval in her eyes.

As prettily as she was dressed - with her frilly pink lace and silken white ribbons - there was no pleasantry of any kind directed at Fish. If anything, the girl in the pink dress with twin brown braids resting upon her shoulder looked like a threat. The "I'm going to tell the teacher" sort of threat, which was the worst kind on the schoolyard short of straight-up bully.

Fish sat up, alternately rubbing his arm and his head. "Woah," he said again, blinking stars away from his field of vision. "Wipeout." Once he could see with any sort of reasonable clarity, he looked up at the girl and then hastily scooted out of her way. She was Bad News, with a capital B AND a capital N. She looked like just the kind of teacher's pet who might go tattle on him, and to boot, he had never, ever seen her before, which meant she had to be loads older than him, even if she looked sorta young.

"Sorry," he said, still rubbing his arm.

He smiled sheepishly, because smiling sheepishly seemed to work to get him out of trouble sometimes. "Please don't tell anyone you saw me do that?" he asked pleadingly.

His arm hurt a lot.

His charms had no effect. Ylaine's delicate mouth turned down at the corners even as her eyebrows shot up in interest for the opportunity to make someone's misery more equal her own. "Why should I?" she asked, striking the tone of terrorist negotiation, her mind on Emerson Thweatt and his gambling operation which had taught her to use everything and anything which might be perceived as a bargaining chip.

Ylaine brushed at the ruffles of her dress. "You might have hit me," she said. Extortion came so easily at this point. In poker parlance, it was now Fish's action.

Fish frowned. "But I didn't," he pointed out, since that was what really mattered. He got to his feet, being careful not to put any weight on his arm because it really, really hurt. He winced at her, strictly for the theatrics, and noted that she was taller than him. This made him a little bit indignant, because it seemed like just about everyone was taller than him, which took most of the fun out of being older and bigger in the first place.

"I didn't hit you," he repeated. "So don't tell."

The logic behind this seemed pretty obvious to him. After all, if he hadn't hurt her, then why would she want to go to a teacher?

He looked down at his arm and frowned.

"I think I might've broken my arm," he said, and was only half melodramatic about it.

Their eyes were nearly level -- Ylaine was only a very small bit taller -- which afforded Fish a good, clear view of exactly how much Ylaine did not care. "I should hope so. You might think twice about nearly crashing into me again and it will probably require an explanation." Unfortunately, giving that explanation was beginning to sound like a lot more effort than Ylaine was interested in expending. A simple tattle was one thing, an injury needing medical attention quite another. For the moment, though, she was content to stand there and wait to see how this would play out.

Fish flexed his wrist experimentally and gasped in pain. "I really think it might be broken," he informed the girl through gritted teeth. Over her shoulder, he glared at the staircase. It had tricked him with its promises of fun and excitement.

"Um," he said, feeling a bit pathetic, "Do you know where the nurse's office is?"

Somehow he had not yet figured this fact out for himself. Like every other boy his age, he thought he was invincible and therefore would never have need for something as trivial as the nurse's office.

Ylaine sighed. This was now officially dull. Simply because she possessed all knowledge in the universe did not make her a walking encyclopedia, phone book, travel guide, or anything else for that matter. She stretched out her arm and pointed down the hallway. "You should take it to the hospital," she informed him. X-rays, casts, and the like were a bit beyond the scrapes-and-bruises nurse station located adjacent the school's administrative office, which was really only there to keep said scrapes and bruises from bogging down the hospital with minor schoolyard injuries.

"Okay," said Fish, who no more knew where the hospital was or how to get there than he knew the location of the lost continent of Lemuria. In fact, given the circumstances, the Lemuria theory was more likely.

He bit his lip uncertainly and then shuffled from foot to foot, his indecisiveness growing increasingly evident. "How do I get there?" he asked.

Ylaine resisted the sudden urge to start swearing at the boy (an unfortunate consequence of the company she kept) and sighed again. If nothing else, maybe this could be used as an excuse to avoid her next class, History of Magic. It was one of the courses she took because she knew all the answers and it was an easy A. The fact that the teacher was exceptionally good-looking was an added bonus and explained why the rest of the girls in the class -- and a few of the boys -- were there. Ylaine sometimes wondered if any of the other girls in the class realized their teacher was also exceptionally gay.

As Ylaine was not quite so enamored with her teacher as the rest of the girls, she did not feel any particular need to show up for class. If she was late or missed it entirely, she had a good reason for it in Fish. "This way," she told him, and started off down the hall.

"Thank you," said Fish, falling into step behind her. While the girl still seemed frustrated and annoyed by him, she could have just left him for dead but she hadn't. Fish hoped this indicated some degree of niceness burried deep down.

"'M Fish," he offered hopefully, feeling awkward to walk in silence. He was still barefoot, having left his shoes at the top of the stairs. "What's your name?"
PostPosted: Sun May 17, 2009 7:19 pm

"Ylaine Taylor," said Ylaine simply. It occurred to her for the first time that this was not nearly illustrious enough. Perhaps she would put some thought into choosing a middle name tonight. Then she could drag out her introduction just a tiny bit longer, to remind others they were small and she was big. Perhaps not physically, but in other, more important ways.

She had nothing further to say beyond her name as she carefully plotted out the longest and most arduous path towards the hospital, avoiding spots where she suspected they might run into teachers. The school blueprint in Ylaine's head was proving immensely useful to her in this endeavor. After all, the longer she took, the more class she would miss, and she could always pretend she had gotten misdirected as an excuse if anyone pressed her. A complete lie, but her universe of knowledge was still a secret from the school, and it would work. Never mind that, as she walked along plotting and planning, poor Fish was languishing behind her.

Fish followed her, trying his best not to start crying. Now that the adrenaline was starting to drain out of his system, he really felt just how badly he had managed to hurt his wrist when he fell. He had never, ever felt anything this bad before in his life!

It was taking an awful long time to get there, and they were taking lots of hallways he had never seen before. Did this Ylaine girl even know where they were going? But he didn't dare disagree with her, because he didn't want her to tell a teacher what she'd seen him doing.

"I didn't know that the school was this big," he said, trying to take his mind off his injury.

"It's enooormous," Ylaine deadpanned drolly, which might have gotten her a laugh under less trying circumstances. They had just gone down a flight of stairs, but upon reaching the next stairwell, Ylaine decided to head up again. "Keep up or you'll get lost."

Fish, to his credit, was doing his best to do just that. He was, however, trying to figure out how they could have gone down a flight of stairs if they were on the ground floor to begin with.

"Were we underground?" he asked as they started up the next staircase. Even if he was injured, he was still curious, and he was trying very, very hard to distract himself.
