"...Kevin was dressed as a knight, and when Chris grabbed his sword, like, a fake plastic thing, not... forget it... he totally lost his balance and smacked right into the punch bowl. SMACK! It was hilarious! Sticky red s**t everywhere!" Joey exploded with laughter and slapped his thigh with the hand that wasn't holding the costume shop's door open for his charge.
Jonah remained silent, pudgy hands stuffed into the pockets of his seersucker jacket. He had finally managed to wheedle some nice clothing out of the woman they lived with and now he was being forced to pick out some sort of ridiculous outfit to cover it all up again. Joey had tried to explain what a costume party was but, "You know, with togas?" and "Just like Halloween!" didn't mean much to the toddler.
The two filed into the rubbery-smelling store and down the first aisle. Eyeless masks and overpriced bags of clothing lined the walls, all of which Jonah regarded with a sneer.
"Ooo, an M&M," Joey said, leaving the child huddled in the center of the aisle while he pawed through the costumes looking for the smallest size.

Today Avery had settled for wearing shorts, converse-style sneakers, and a t-shirt with a microphone with a star in the background printed on the front. Compared to the dark skinned, peacock tailed boy's usual mode of dress this was a fairly boyish look. Avery liked either look, however, skirts and dresses just felt so wonderful! So much movement was possible when one wore dresses and skirts and the small boy adored it.
He entered the shop he onto the fingertips of his tall metallic looking guardian. Both parties gazed about with interest but Avery seemed to do it with a lot more energy than Ethe did. The smaller dark skinned boy tugged his guardian over toward the aisle of costumes where another small boy stood mostly abandoned by his guardian. Ethe looked down at the other boy blankly while Avery seemed rather excited to see another child, despite the fact that the child seemed less than pleased to be there.
Avery released Ethe'oj's hand and went to greet the other child, "Hiya. You okay?"

Jonah looked up at Avery and attempted to soften his expression into one that wasn't quite so harsh. He had learned in his short time on this planet that cuteness and likability got people farther than sulking, but he didn't quite have the ability to fake it down yet. His brows remained tensed and angry as he grated out, "Hrmph. Fine." At least this boy had the sense to dress presentably. If Jonah hadn't insisted, he would still be wearing delightful combinations of too-large shirts emblazoned with BUTTON YOUR FLY and neon polyester shorts Joey found on a sale rack. "Got to go dress up party."
The manatee's eyes rose up past Avery's to his guardian as Joey held out a small green M&M costume. "Great, right?" the man said.
"No." Jonah's hands slipped from his pockets and his arms crossed across his chest.

A dark hand reached up and toyed with the fringes of his white hair as Jonah told him that he was fine and then softened his expression and explained his purpose for being here. Emerald eyes flicked toward Joey curiously as he held up the M&M costume and a small grin flicked across the dark skinned boy's lips. He sidled a bit closer apparently unaware of the rules of personal space and bubbles.
Ethe'oj began to move past the boys with a quiet but heavy gait to brows through the costumes himself and thus not paying attention to whatever conspiracy his son was currently plotting and about to lay upon the pudgier boy in the aisle. They had come here purely because of Avery's curiosity and now Ethe seemed curious enough to poke around on his own.
Avery leaned closer and spoke in a tone that suggested conspiracy, "Maybe ya should pick your own costume before ya get stuck in something you'll really hate," the peacock tailed boy offered this advice to his new acquaintance. "It'll make it more fun, yah?"
More fun? Possibly not if you're being dragged to the party, but perhaps it would make it more bearable.

Jonah nodded before closing the five or so feet between him and his guardian. He extended a finger toward the costume, looked up at Joey and said, "No!"
The man huffed slightly and shoved the M&M back on its pole. "Fine! What do you wanna wear?"
The manatee looked up at Avery once more. "Come with," he said. His tone was clearly more demanding than friendly, but he didn't make any move to grab the other boy as he toddled away down the aisle toward the more fashionable costumes.

Avery tilted his head at the pudgy boy's simple command and then nodded and moved after Jonah with a soft happy hum coming out from the back of his throat. Despite the grumpy demeanor the Peacock boy found that his new companion was rather interesting if not a bit demanding, which was perfectly alright.
The white haired boy gazed over at the fashionable costume with a curious gaze for a long moment, "What do ya wan'a be...Uh..."
Names would be handy at this juncture.
"'M Avery," he introduced himself simply with a grin not all too put off at himself because he had forgotten to do that first before he followed the other boy to the other sets of costumes.

"Jonah." He hesitated a moment, almost adding his guardian's questionable honorific by accident. Jonah had only just realized a couple of days ago that labeling himself "Jonah the Magnificent" in front of others only served to make him look stupid.
"Sailor," he added. Clearly Jonah had no idea that dressing up as a sailor was one of his dumber ideas. Somehow he felt a connection to the profession, however, so he made his way over to where a little white outfit hung on a low hanger nearby. "This." He picked up a white hat from a stack of hats nearby and jammed it on his head, blue anchor decal facing forward.

Avery nodded at the name, "Joooonnnahh~," he repeated as if to help him further remember the name and thus not make any further mistakes as to the chubby boy's identity.
Politely he tried to hide a giggle but he still grinned as he had been beforehand he stared at the hat and then at the rest of the costume that Jonah wanted before he moved forward to pick up the outfit with it's hanger and held the rest of it to his newfound 'friend' to help him to continue envisioning it. He had seen others doing this in various stores and the outfit even seemed like it would fit Jonah! Lucky find, "Yes! This works!"
