Kari sat outside the library reading a article in a VisiBook on how the new enhancements people were being given, were in all probability going to further separate the super-rich and the super-poor. It was true that people who could afford the more expensive upgrades were more than likely going to breed and have them transferred down into their gene pool making them more 'enhanced' on a genetic level. But just because your super fast and intelligent doesn't give you an advantage over anyone else. At least in his opinion, all it meant was you were given different opportunity. Each person could make his or her life great simply by trying. His mother was example enough of that. Sixty years old with no enhancements and she was considered to be one of the top geneticist working for the HGP.

He stood up and dusted himself off flipping close the paper thin pages of the book. He still marveled at how every book in the world had been replaced by small pads of digital information viewers. Libraries seemed so much smaller...

He was really interested in a new pill that would allow him to access the internet v.i.a wife. This was in deed a wonder to him because now he could learn all the information necessary for an upgrade without all the wasted time behind a VIsiScreen. Kari was beginning to feel he was late for something but couldn't remember what... HIS SPEECH!

"In todays age humans are what humans considered to be the hard work of Hollywood over a one-hundred and fifty years ago. I can tell that the woman in the back, is married to the man on her left but is sleeping with her male friend on the left." He didnt mind giving up secrets to draw interest it was also to much fun to watch the accused play it off. "Im kidding, sir calm down. Really though, we have the ability to engineer our future and ensure survival. We can kill cancer before it even threatens your granddaughter..."

"FREAK!" A man in the back of the crowd stood up and withdrew a large shiny metalic rod throwing it at the front of the room. It missed by a large majority and hit some poor woman in the head. She screamed in discomfort and as her motherboard started sending damage signals to the nearest medical center. "Oh s**t!" The fanatic in the back had just been promptly tackled as Kari walked off stage not even bothering to finish his speech. These people didnt want to hear this, they were poor and the poor knew nothing about metal muscle or gene splicing.

As dash walked down the streets, he saw the commotion that was going down. Curious, he drew closer.
"what in the name of..."
someone brushed past him. As Dash turned to look, he saw that the the person was obviously upset about something. Turning back to the crowd, Dash thought to himself. What could this be about that was that bad?

Kari was out of the back door in a flash but sadly he was on time to hear the would-be attacker screaming about how Kari should be locked up. To Kari's knowledge he was not a freak, he was a medical marvel and at times a little full of himself. But how could anyone help from feeling truly unique at this age in technology. Kari tapped his cheek bone three times and the a contact rolled from the side of his eye (black in color) and covered hiis naked eyeball. The contact that had just appeared was the equivalent to sunglasses of the 21st century. Amazing as they may be they still itched a bit, and while looking down to rub his eye he accidentally bumped into someone.

"Oh, hey im sorry about that. These damn upgrades are uncomfortable sometimes." He spun on a heel and landed at somewhat of an odd stance with his hand out ready to shake the mans hand.

Dash shook his hand firmly.
"The name's Dash Kanawaga. I agree, they can be a bit of a pain. Tell me, would you happen to know anything about what happened with that crowd? I've never seen such a one so upset about something."
Dash dropped his hands by his side and looked back in the direction of the crowd.
"This pains me. I remember seeing something like this back home."
The mention of the word struck a sharp pain is his gut. It has been so long since he left and now painful memories fly back at him like a swarm of crows.

"The names Kari Ruth." He shook the mans hand slowly and then looked back at the crowd. "Some idiot threw a piece or rebar at me while i was giving a speech, missed and hit some poor old lady in the head." He began to walk towards the Medical lab but was stopped abruptly by the remembrance of the fact that he didnt have to work today. So he looked around for a small cafe, "Coffee Dash?"

The question brought Dash back to reality.
"Coffee? Uhh, yes, that would be nice. I'm sorry, I just had a lot on my mind. I hope that old lady is alright too, its not every day something like that happens."

"I hope you dont mind that Cafe?" The Cafe in question was a smaller one on the corner that looked all but desolated. It was a little small and some tables were pushed too close together but it was a very nice place.

"Hello there Kari." It was Miss Bogol, wife of the late Mr. Bogol the orginal owner of the Cafe.

"Hello Miss Bogol." He waived and pointed at two cups of coffee on the menu, asking for a small table by the window. "How have you been?"

"I miss home country, this one is no good without Mr. Bogol." She was from Russia, herself and Mr. bogol had moved here almost forty years ago to open this Cafe. Now without him he had to agree Eden sucked just a bit. "Give one second, coffee be ready." Kari nodded with a smile and continued on to his normal booth.

Dash followed Kari inside. He looked about at the tables and then looked towards the window. He saw a stray dog out on the sidewalk with its tounge hanging out on the side of its mouth, obviously suffering from thirst.

He watched as it poked around along the sewage drains lapping up whatever water that flowed by. As Kari walked towards the table, the dog skittered off. Dash sat down on the seat across from him and rested his right arm on the table.

"So, Kari, why is it that some strange man would throw a rod at you? Does he know you?"

"He knows of my work. I have to admit that the theory of it all, is quite scary." He started thinking of a way to explain his work... "Imagine that canine you just saw outside of the window. It is weak, pathetic in all aspects except that its basic survival instinct are still intact. Now imagine being able to take that dog and give it the instinct's of a white shark, metalic muscle and enhanced brain function." He smiled as Mrs. Bogol came over dropping their coffee and extra creamer the way he liked it. As he stirred he continued to speak, "The dog is now a machine capable of fully hunting and doing more than survivng. That is the human problem, we are just survivng. We have made the obvious changes to allow maximum human comfort, but have done nothing to increase ownselves. The HGP was just a page in the book of history as compared to the story it is about to allow us to tell." A fly came by at that instant heading for his coffee, in the flash of eye he struck the small fly and it went flying outside into the street moderately unharmed.

"Outside that topic, how are you?" He sipped at his coffee and watched the t.v in the background as his pager began to go off. Kari smiled happily realizing his new upgrades were ready. "Oh and on another side note i will now be receiving a new upgrade for wifi and redoing a failed genetic upgrade. Did you know that the humming birds heart beats over 50,000 times per minute?" This upgrade was going to give him a new ability that he couldn't wait to play with.

Dash sat back in his seat and sipped on some of his coffee. "Yes, I'm fine. However, you must be aware of giving someone too much of an upgrade. You can easily create a monster out of something as small as that dog we saw. Now, Immagine that as a human... Giving people upgrades haphazardly could easily come down to a catastrophe, a monstrosity, a... Well, you get the Idea."

Suddenly realizing the tone he was using, he appologised. "I'm sorry, Its just that my homeland was destroyed by some group of freaks who had no heart. Watching my people burn under the cinders of of the houses that nourished them was all too much for me at the time. My family lay helpless, waiting to die. I stay hidden, unable to do a thing. My abillities were not yet discovered till later. Now I seek vengeance for what they did to me... and my people."

Dash unstrapped his sword and laid it on the table in front of him. He slightly unsheathed its blade, revealing a flame-like design. The hilt itself had a red ribbon tied to it and a scarlet gem placed in the center.

"This is the sword haded down to me by my ancestors. I still know little about it, but I DO know its going to be the very blade that avenges them."

"There was a man named Barber Stevenson about 30 years back. He was the head of the HGP developmental program..." He thought for a moment about the test subjects, privatized prison sold inmates like lab mice all while saving a penny. "He made men into monsters and then watched as they tore each other apart, he said 'The real animals are the ones who allow us to do this to our fellow man.' . Essentially he meant that if you create a monster then be prepared to deal with it, if you cant then dont. Were not making monsters, were making people better. Professional thievs, con artist, politicians, the crazy bums, they use natural ability or error to do the things they do. We use our abilities..." He couldnt think of a way to explain anything. His motherboard was rejecting a code that he couldnt fix on his own. "Im sorry i seem to be having a malfunction, its crazy but i just cant seem to lock onto full ideas right now..." He sipped his coffee as his eye twitched involuntarily.

Dash looked down at the table, his thoughts turning back to the tragedy. He tried remembering how the attackers looked, but could not. He slipped his sword back into its sheath and strapped it on his back. "I understand. I do not mean to say your work is wrong. I simply can't immagine someone so heartless. It was one, maybe two men that attacked my city, obviously they had a tremendous amount of power..."

He stopped for a moment to think. "If that man you say is the one who made monsters from men, then could he also be responsible for making such super soldiers as well? No two men I know can cause such destruction in so little time."

Dash looked at Kari, who seemed to be having a bit of trouble. "I do not mean to load you down with such questions, I know its not possible to explain. I'll just have to find out along the way."
