What did a siren of limited means collect to occupy her time?
The answer came in four parts named John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and as Casia looked pleasedly into the small paper bag she was carrying as she waited for Jane to finish up in the nearby bookstore, she felt a glow of satisfaction. In lieu of normality, she instead made the Beatles the stable factor in her otherwise zappy lifestyle. And though the Beatles were by no means proper replacement for a secure environment and trust in her guardian, they reminded her of a time when she had felt stable. Collecting memorabilia and records of them when she could was an easy game to play, and a hobby that was, if not productive, comforting. Like a blanket on a cold winter night.
And though Jane was hesitant about spending money, she could say it was for her musical education and get a cheap record pretty easily, she thought with a wry grin. Pulling out the latest addition to her collection, found in a secondhand shop, she glanced at the cover. The Fab Four grinned back at her in black and white, and on the back was a list of songs she had already memorized anyway, but hearing them out loud was way more boss. She carefully put the record bag in the bag and sat down on the curb, waiting for her guardian to find the book she had wanted and pay.

Quinn led Ash by the hand as they walked down the street. He was getting exhausted with the boy's constant asking for everything.
"I want that!" "An' that!" "Thatoo!" were his three favorites, 'thatoo' being melded into a single word. Everything they passed while shopping he wanted.
Quinn just wanted to get some books. The pile of romance novels he read while waiting for customers was running out, and he needed to restock.
He figured Ash wouldn't really want to buy books, anyway. The boy couldn't read, yet. He might give in to get him a picture book, or something. 'Red fish, blue fish', or something like that.
"Ash, we're going to go into the book store, okay?"
No response. He looked down at his hand. Ashley was gone.
"Ashley?! Ashley?!"
The boy had made his way to a girl. A girl in front of the shop. He reached up and tugged at the strange things coming out of her back.
"Wings?" He questioned the girl, and held Pikachu tight against his chest. Quinn spotted him, and jogged over with a relieved sigh.
"Sorry about that. He tends to run off."

Casia blinked as she felt a tugging on her wings, hastily banishing the Beatles to the bag once more. Turning around with the intention of treating whatever bummer dude that thought it was cool to grab someone's wings to a proper Greystone eyebrow raise, but then she saw just who the culprit was. Brown eyes widening, she relaxed and a smile spread across her face. That was no dopey spaz, that was an adorable toddler! "Hey, little man!" she said, waving. "What's happening?"
The siren's hands fluttered anxiously as a grown up approached, but he seemed to be with the kid. Fathers were somewhat unfamiliar to Casia, but she got the basic concept of them pretty well, and of course she had seen some around. Anyway, this one had that sort of look that she was beginning to notice on Jane's face before the guardian had made a token purchase for the siren and beat feet to the bookstore, definitely worse for the wear. "S'copacetic." she assured him easily. "He's a real cutie!" Having thus done her duty and acknowledged his old man, she turned back to the toddler, and this time noticed his weird stuffed animal. What was that? Not a rabbit, it looked like something that belonged in the Sea of Monsters, it was so funky. "What's your friend's name?" she queried, turning herself around and sitting indian-style in front of him on the sidewalk. "He looks pretty groovy."

He blushed at the complement of being called a cutie, and held up his yellow pokemon. "Pikachu!" He exclaimed happily. "Funderboat." He added, as an explanation. "Gwoovy?" Ashley's brow furrowed. "Copacetic?" He didn't know what any of those words meant. "Whassat mean?"
Copacetic? Quinn mouthed the word, shaking his head. That was barely cool when HE was a kid. This kid used lots of old lingo. Groovy? Well, she did have wings. So she was already wierd. Maybe that explained it.
It didn't.
"Uhh, here, you guys seem to be getting along pretty well, I'm going to run inside and grab a few books, okay?" He was grateful for the momentary reprieve from Ash's grabby hands, and was already walking toward the door. "Thanks, Toodles~"
Ash kept his eyes on her, seemingly not noticing that Ash had left.
"How come you have biwdy wings?"

Casia was more than used to explaining her slang, just as she was more than used to not understanding other peoples'. Usually she would pretend to know what it meant, but since the kid in question was a toddler, she felt no qualms in asking. "Funderboat? Sounds kinda German. Is that like sie liebt dich, yeah, yeah, yeah?" Pikachu, she supposed, was a name rather than a slang, and she held her hand out to the stuffed toy. "Nice to meet you, Pikachu." the siren said diplomatically. As for her own slang, "Groovy is like really cool or hip and copacetic means you're doing fine."
She watched the adult leave with a 'Toodles', and suddenly felt all the awkwardness of being abandoned with a small child. True, he was hopefully coming back, but this still left her the most responsible figure around, and if anything happened to the boy, it would probably be her fault. Flapping her wings nervously, she clutched her paper bag a little tighter for support. She could handle it, right? "Toodles." she replied slowly.
Presently, she noticed that the toddler was talking. "Hey cool cat, what's your name?" she asked, and then bit her lip at his question. He probably didn't know what a siren was, and she wasn't too keen on letting the fact that she was a supposedly dangerous mythical creature get around anyway. She decided to simplify. "I'm a legendary creature." she announced grandly.
When she said it that way, it almost sounded impressive and Casia looked briefly smug. Much better than announcing she was a siren and watching people try not to look suddenly nervous.

"Nonono," He corrected, "Funderboat." He made wavey hands with his arms, and then slammed one down ferociously. "Kraaaakow! Funder. Boat." He nodded. "Gwoovy!" He laughed.
"My name is Ash!" He looked proud of himself. "Ashwey Moreau!"
"A wegendary creature?" He thought for a second. "Wike Pikachu! Can you funderboat?" He looked warily at the girl, like she'd discharge lightning at any second. "What's your creature name?"

Casia startled as Ash's hand slammed down, but the message was loud and clear. "Oh, thunderbolt." she realized and looked at the stuffed animal again. It didn't LOOK very dangerous, so she supposed it was some merchandise from a show or something. Something tripper than Yellow Submarine, even. "Groovy!" The siren flashed the toddler a triumphant smile as he repeated after her. "See, you got it!"
Nodding gravely, Casia held out a hand to the boy. "I'm Casia. Real boss to meet you, Mr. Moreau."
She blinked, all of a sudden in another conversation entirely. Pikachu was a legendary creature? What weird kind of culture made legends like Pikachu? "Me? Uh... No, I can't thunderbolt. I can, uh," What COULD sirens do? Luring men to their doom was the obvious thing, yes, but it wasn't the sort thing you told kids about. "I can fly?" Sort of. She needed more practice and a good wind at the best of times. "And I can sing." That was about it, really. Sirens were dangerous on the ocean, but kid sirens sitting outside of bookstores weren't particularly fearsome at all. "My creature name is Casia, same as my real name!" she insisted. She already had a growing collection of names, she didn't need any more added to the list.

"You can fwy?! And sing?!" He grinned. "Good for my team. Wanna join? Pikachu and..." he thought, "Casiasaur! Roar, Casiasaur! Funderboat and Sing!" He giggled happily.
"So? Wanna join?" He looked expectantly up at her. She was going to be the second member of his team!
A thought trailed into the back of his mind. "Or do I hafta weaken you first?" Another thought. "Ohno! I don't have anyfing to catch you wiff!"

"Casiasaur?" It seemed like nicknames couldn't be avoided no matter what she did, and she supposed it could be worse. She was a legendary creature now! "Sounds fine by me." Grinning, she gave him a thumbs up.
Flapping her wings in alarm, though she doubted that Ash could seriously weaken her, (She was sort of scrawny, yes, but not enough to make a toddler a serious threat) she waved her hands. "It's copacetic! I'm a willing volunteer." Catching was also an alarming thought, and her mind worked rapidly to find a solution that did not involve making a little kid cry because he couldn't take her back to his pad as his new pet. "How about you let me live in the wild... And when you need me you can, uh..."
"Make the Casiasaur call?" It was the best idea she could come up with.

"Hooray, Casiasaur!" He giggled. Then paused. A willing volunteer? That was unheard of! Unnatural! Un...un...Un something! Awesome!
That made Casiasaur special. And rare.
"How do I make a Casiasaur call?"

Casia considered this. "How about this?" She whistled a bit of the melody from I Get by With a Little Help From my Friends, which she supposed was fitting enough. "Can you whistle, little guy?"

Ash attempted, and failed. Quinn stepped out of the store, and swooped the kid up.
"Thanks a lot!" He smiled and waved a free hand at the girl. Ash gave him a look like he had just kicked the world's cutest puppy.
"I haven't wearned the casiasaur call yet!" His brow furrowed into what would soon be a tantrum face. He tried whistling, and failed, so he settled for singing it.
"Da da daaa dadadadada da da da!" He called frantically at Casiasaur.
"Da da daaa dadadadada da da da!"
Quinn was already walking away.

Casia went to go after him, but Jane chose the same moment to leave. "Come on, Casia, time to go!"
"Wait, Jane, there's a friend of mine over there and I have to-"
"Any other day, Casia, but unless you want to have dinner at ten o'clock, I really need to get the pot roast going."
Feeling like a class traitor, albeit a hungry class traitor, Casia waved goodbye at Ash and left.
