Session 1:
Butchering; Learning to cut meat for your growing dragonet.
- Dragon hygiene; keeping their bodies well oiled, and spotting for cracks in the skin.
- Human hygiene; care of the human body- and their living area.
- Dragon anatomy.
- Weyr etiquette.
- Mindspeaking and identifying the difference between yourself and your dragon
- How to deal with an overfed dragon

Weyrlingmaster F'sey rumbled softly to himself, watching the first of the weyrlings filter in. They might be happy now, he noted to himself, but how could they not be? There was nothing like Impressing, nothing in the entire universe. Which was, of course, why it was so important to take care of one's dragon. Once enough of the newly-made riders made there way in, F'sey cleared his voice and looked around.

"Alright, listen up. We're starting now and anyone who arrives after this point is late. I'm going to give you a few rules and I'm not going to repeat myself. One, never put yourself, your dragon or anyone else here in physical danger. Two, no talking while I'm talking. And three, should you ever get it in your small little hard to argue with me, know that you will get everything you deserve." F'sey flashed the group a toothy smile.

"Now, feeding your dragons. Any volunteers?"

[[ OOC: It is up to you to decide if your pair was on time, but do know there will be trouble for the late ones. This thread will last about a week, perhaps a little longer. This is also set before the Weyrling Gather. ]]

As she'd been told, Zara had arrived early to the lesson, a sleepy dragonet in tow. While she'd been busy enough during the past hours not to think too much, now the weight of recent events was crashing down upon her. She'd be the Weyrlingmaster's assistant--would he make her his scapegoat? The thought of being put in a position to fail in front of everyone made her swallow nervously, reaching to scratch Fuxith's headknobs.

You are afraid. Why? Peering up at her, Fuxith's eyes whirled rapidly within their delicately-shaped ridges. The anxiety rolling off of His now and then worried him, causing those many-faceted eyes to take on a yellowish tint. Do you think that I will fail?

"No!" Zara hissed, barely managing not to burst out in the midst of F'sey's speech. Forcing a measure of calm upon herself, she continued quietly, "You'll be fine, Fuxith." And so will I, she reminded herself sharply. Shooting the Weyrlingmaster a glance--funny, he wasn't the same man who'd 'passed sentence' upon her--she apologized, "He was worried, sir. ...I was told I was to assist you in lessons?"

((OH thats right. C_C Meet your volunteer. XD *points at Zara* Firelizard punishment. C_C))
R'ale grimaced nervously, putting an arm around the blue Jaereth's shoulders and tried to look a little smaller than usual. He'd gotten here on time, though he was still yawning as a result, and was trying to stifle it.
Ooh, Feeding, I think I like this lesson....
R'ale automatically put his hand on the Blue's muzzle, then turned red, remembering he was the only one who could hear him.

F'sey put a hand on his hip, drumming his fingers against his side as he watched the female bluerider, eyes narrowing as he listened to her little speech. "Told to?" He frowned. That hardly seemed likely. S'kagi had only handed off the duty of weyrling lessons a few days ago and- His jaw set and he wrinkled his nose slightly, taking in the full picture of bluerider and blue. "Did S'kagi tell you to?" That damn bronzerider. Already messing things up.

Well, just to be safe, might as well have two volunteers up here. "You there. Sleepy bluerider."

R'ale of blue Jaereth, Ialluth said from somewhere in the back corner of his mind.

"R'ale. Wake up." He motioned for the young bluerider to stand and join him up front. You will be, alongside-"

Zara of blue Fuxith.

"Zara, demonstrating to the class how to butcher a wherrie for your dragon. Do either of you have any idea how to do this?"

R'ael immediately to his feet. turned beacon red at the sound of his name being called, which made an amusing contrast to his blue dragon as he scrambled hastily to his feet, embarassment stifling his furthered yawns. "...Uh. I...." He stammered in embarassment. ".....I've butchered fish sometimes....just not a wherrie...."

Galliath was a very excited dragonet. The opportunity to spend time with his clutchmates was simply too good a one to pass up, and besides, S'van had to be there. Clambering all over the lad like an overeager puppy, the dragonet reminded him that it was time for the lessons. S'vaaaaaaaaaaan we go now? the brown shoved at his somewhat less excitable friend. "Yes, yes Gall. Yes. We go now... Gall, please stop tugging at my clothes. I do need them in one piece, remember?" The dragonet did not look at all repentant. Miith will be there, and others! Can we play? "No, Gall. Lessons aren't for playing, all right? They're for, err, learning. It's not going to be very fun, you know." Unconvinced, the rambunctious hatchling all but dragged the weyrling along, who could only shake his head in dismay. Thus it was that they arrived precisely on time, and settled down just as the Weyrlingmaster began to speak. I see Jaereth! S'van put a quelling hand to one gleaming forelimb.

K'pak had been awake and busy since what felt like an unreasonable hour of the morning -- more unreasonable than usual, even. Not that it was ever easy to sleep in when there was a hungry, itchy dragonet wanting attention, but on today of all days... Well, today was important. He couldn't afford to be late on the first day. So when Amalenth had nudged him in the wee hours of the morning, rather than succumb to the temptation to simply roll over and get a few more candlemarks of nap in, he'd hauled himself out of his comfortable bed and set to work.

The result was a well-fed, freshly washed and oiled green dragonet looking her best for the first lesson... and a tired, slightly bedraggled-looking (and slightly damp -- well, Amalenth hadn't meant to get him wet, and she'd apologized afterwards) rider. Well, at least they were on time. K'pak found himself thinking wistfully of a good cup of hot klah as he settled down to watch the two volunteers get to work.

Amalenth leaned her head against his knee and looked up at her rider, eyes whirling serenely. Don't worry. I'll listen too, so that we'll be sure to catch everything. He smiled and ran a hand over her eyeridges -- unwilling to speak after F'sey's warning, he nonetheless did his best to think gratitude in her direction.

"If he was the bronzerider that told me to, then yes." Zara's gaze was level, yet respectful as she looked back at F'sey. A greenrider he might be, but she wasn't fool enough to think him the lesser for it. Weyrbred, she had trouble believing any dragon color might be 'filler' as compared to another. Her eyes flicking away for a moment, she added, "...My firelizard followed me onto the sands."

Peering at his clutch-siblings, Fuxith huffed out the air in his lungs with a long-suffering sigh. They could be so silly...however, his attention was easily won by the mention of butchering. That means food, doesn't it?

With a barely perceptible nod, Zara then shook her head in response to the Weyrlingmaster. "I'm afraid I don't know yet, sir."

"Fish? You've butchered fish?" F'sey raised an eyebrow at the nervous lad, drumming his fingers harder as he considered this. He'd never had to butcher a fish himself, but at least the boy had dealt with blood and bodily fluids and all those extremities. "You'll be fine then, R'ale." He nodded towards the table with knife and a pillow of un-butchered wherries. "Stand there for a moment."

Turning his attention back on Zara, he was about to accuse her of some sort of plotting when she mentioned her firelizard. Damn S'kagi. What was he, the firelizard patrol? (Though he supposed a candidate with a firelizard was probably a trifle more obvious than a rider with firelizards.) "I see. That would be the one, yes. Go stand with R'ale. To the side please, both of you."

He turned to face the rest of the small class, drumming his fingers again as he assessed the situation. "I'm going to do this once, so watch closely."

The Weyrlingmaster turned to the head of the class, striding over to the table as he grabbed one of the wherries and a knife, flopping the bird before him. The greenrider made exceptionally quick work of the thing, skinning and cutting away the desirable bits with a few quick flicks of his wrist. "Now, when they're older, they can eat this entire thing, but for now, monitor what they eat. One upset stomach will upset the entire Weyr. And I'm not kidding. Overfeeding is also something to watch out for. I know you were warned about it at hatching, but they can still get greedy while their young."

He nodded to R'ale and Zara. "All right. Do as I did." F'sey glanced back over the class. "Once they go and make their mistakes, the rest of you will come up two and a time and try to do it right."

He handed a wherrie to R'ale and Zara. "One last thing. Don't go too deep when you skin it or you'll be sorry."

R'ale grimaced with clear understanding, remembering a few times where it had been made pretty clear some parts of a fish smelled a -lot- worse than others, and added another edgy. "Yessir." Wherrie if nothing else looked very little like a fish, and he felt hesitant to start, but Zara had even less practice than he did, so he nervously moved to take charge, trying to mimic the green-rider's expert cutting, if with a bit more caution until he found his 'land legs' as it were, working with the dead bird.
As nervous as he was he certainly wasn't entirely incompetent at it, though his nerves might well cause him to make more errors than he otherwise might.

S'en had, somewhat surprisingly, woken before his dragon. They were both more than a little beat ─ apparently Hatchings and Impression tend to have that effect, even on walls as hardened as his (and the Feast certainly hadn't helped!) ─ but Kanath, young as he is, lost out to S'en's turns of habit and practice. Unfortunately, those turns of habit didn't do him an ounce of good when it came to deciding what exactly he should do with himself after that. It was early… Too early, really, to go traipsing around doing much of anything. Most folks were still trying to sleep. He hadn't even been hungry.

Shards if he isn't hungry now though; now that Kanath is awake, the Weyrlings with any sense are up and getting around, and he doesn't actually have time to do anything about it.

I am hungry too, the bronze tells him, in expression of sympathy, and not as a complaint.

S'en is very sure Kanath will be able to fix that problem before he does, but that suits him fine. He'd fix his dragon's hunger sooner if he could. As it is, they have a lesson to attend. And Holdborn and Hall raised, if he's to take proper care of his lifemate, S'en isn't too disillusioned to admit he needs it. He hadn't been at the Weyr long enough before Kanath found him to pick up much even in the way of basic etiquette, let alone gather anything particularly meaningful (because manners don't count). With a growing, needing hatchling at his knee, now seems like an exceptionally important time to learn.

For that very reason, the pair arrive quite on time, and are among the first to filter in with the small group. Kanath seems particularly content, giving S'en the notion his dragonet cares a lot more about being proper than he does.

Well, no matter. He too has it in him to do things right and listen well. His time at the Smithcraft Hall has actually done him ample favors on that note; he's used to being told things only once. By the shell, his instructors do not repeat themselves! He's grown accustomed to taking in details in the first time he hears and sees them; it was often the only chance he got. Who knows, maybe the deftness his craft afforded him will also come in handy.

Kanath, of course, is more interested in the 'feeding' part than he is the process by which it's achieved. Do we get to eat? His steadily whirling eyes are a mix of curiosity and subtle piteousness.

… Later, surely (maybe after they've all made fools of themselves), though he doesn't venture to grant a reply. S'en hasn't yet attempted to mindspeak to the little bronze, and he's certainly not going to answer for the class to hear. Not even a whisper.

Quinnel was on time, amazingly enough. Mud had actually been the one to wake her up, nipping at her for food. By the time she had finished feeding the insistent Flitt, Winath was awake and waiting for her own food. Despite having had a full night’s sleep, there was still a hint of lethargy to Quinnel’s movements; Winath had had an upset stomach the night before, keeping both her and Quinnel up.

As she head down to where her Weyrling lessons were supposed to be, Quinnel didn’t even pull her hair up into its customary bun, settling instead on simply tying it back with a leather strap. Winath trundled behind her, keeping one eye on the Flitt circling above. With a wave of her hand, Quinnel managed to get Mud to leave before she and Winath came to stand at the back of the group of Weyrlings.

When F’sey butchered the wherry, Quinnel didn’t even flinch; she, like R’ale, had experience with fish. Despite her uneasiness at being around her clutchmates, Winath seemed quite interested in the butchering, and her interest in turn made Quinnel interested.

Quinnel’s face displayed an unusual amount of awareness and focus – for her, anyway - as she stepped up to a wherry, but Winath still broadcasted worry as her rider picked up a knife.

Lovely. The biggest thing she'd 'skinned' was a tuber, and now she was about to attempt a wherry in front of the entire class. Well...she couldn't say she hadn't known she'd have to deal with carving animals if she Impressed. Just...not in front of everyone.

Be careful, Fuxith prodded, eyes whirling with a hint of worried yellow. Remember not to cut too deep. I don't know why, but it would be bad to do it if he said not to.

"I heard him," Zara murmured, awkwardly making an attempt at skinning the creature. Her light, cautious cuts didn't make much headway in removing the hide, although one thing could be said--it definitely wasn't too deep!
