Tools, though not essential to a witch, are often employed to set a tone or mood. The more in the mindset you are about magick, the more powerful your workings will be, and sometimes we need a few props wink . Of course, they're looked at better than just mere props. I have an athame that as soon as my boyfriend picked it up, immediately dropped it and said rather bewildered that it wasnt something he should be touching (not in a bad way. I really wish he would have done the same to my tarot cards...). I've made necklaces and wands for folks who feel a certain energy to them that you wouldnt normally get from buying something out of a shop. Either way, they're supposed to be important to you, but you dont rely on them. A witches most powerful tool is themselves, and in all reality, its all they truly need.

Still wanna look and feel cool though, dont ya? Well, here is a list of the better known and used tools.

Altar-basically a flat surface in which you do your workings on, mostly ritual. Its a place of power, so you may set like...a charm or a ring on it to "charge" it (will be explained later). It's also one of the focal points if you were doing an esbat or any other type of worship. Usually a statue or a god or goddess (or both) would be on it, or other things that represent your goal or intent. It can be decorated with things sacred to your workings, flowers and shells and the likewise, or dressed up according to one of the holidays. If you've ever been to a more formal church, they have a similar kind of altar...

Athame- Pronounced A-tham-ay, not ath-aim. I wish they'd put a little accent mark on the e, it sounds French. Anyway, and athame is a little knife used for directing energy. Usually the blade is horribly dull, and the handle is black, but I've seen lovely ones in all shapes and forms. My first one was a butter knife xd , fitting for a hedge witch. Despite the dull blade, you need to be careful with this one. It must NEVER EVER be used to hurt ANYONE, yourself included. The only thing the athame should ever cut is a door to and from a circle in case you ever need to leave it (circles will be explained later). The athame represents the God, as its shape is rather straight and uh...resembles something.... xd

Bell- its just that, a bell. Usually you would use to to stir up the attention of whatever it is you're working with. Sometimes I use a bell when I call the corners (also explained later). Sound is also a very powerful magick smile

Besom- A broom. For centuries, witches have been portrayed on the back of flying brooms. That actually comes from a nice little tradition where at a festival, people would jump with brooms to encourage the harvest to grow that high. Brooms sweep away anything we dont want, both mundane and magickal. Traditionally, brooms were kept upside down to encourage good spirits. Which reminds me, I have a nice little spell I do when cleaning my room that involves both a broom and bells...I should post that!

Boline- A small knife used to cut herbs or cords. Also, you never hurt anyone with this, cause thats flat out mean. Anyway, a boline sometimes has a curved blade and a white handle, but again it depends on the persons tastes. Mines an exacto knife xd

Book of Shadows- I think we've been over this one, but its basically a book in which spells, recipes, rituals, and other important material is kept. Be it a spiral notebook, a three ringed binder, or an actual book, its contents are what matter.

Candles- will not light up when you blow on them. Though...that'd be nice and save me on lighter fluid...Candles are easily the simplest magick, and one of the more effective methods. They come in different colors, have a surface that you can inscrie runes and symbols on, and are fairly mess-free. Candles also can be used to symbolize the god and goddess if you dont have or want any statues, or give off a light that beats a standard lightbulb.

Chalice-a cup. Normally a rather ornate cup, as it holds water, juice, or wine during a ritual. If you're tight on funds, anything thats not a paper cup can suffice. I prefer teacups, without handles, but I also have a gold trimmed wine goblet Im fond of. The chalice represents the goddess, the womb, and is a smaller representation of the cauldron. Just...dont set this one on fire...

Cauldron-a fireproof vessel that can be used for a multitude of things. It can hold water, burn herbs, boil potions, make stew, represent the goddess and rebirth, and can be all yours for just three easy installments of $19.99! Sorry...anyways, cauldrons can get costly, $24 up in my area for one that would hold maybe three cups of liquids...I use a saucepan that we've had for a while, and I keep my herb burning for another fireproof dish...it can kinda stick to the pans surface sad

Herbs- plants! Magickal plants! That can be used for medicinal purposes as well as magickal. Each plant has a purpose, an element, a planet, hell if they could relate it to a plant, its prolly been done. Just as a VERY BIG WARNING! Herbs are not straight up medicine. They arent doctors visits, and they wont cure cancer (yet...theres gotta be a few out there that do). You need medical care and regular visits to doctors, herbs wont cut it alone. THey need help too. Think of it as another method. Two ways are better than one. And as always, make sure you know EXACTLY what herb it is, what it can and will do, both good and bad.

There are poisonous herbs out there too. I suggest both Cunningham's book on herbs, as well as one that shows pictures, or looking them up online before doing anything that involves ingesting or putting them on your skin.

Incense- Scent is a wonderful magick as well, and incense has been used for centuries by almost every old religion out there. Different incenses have different uses and properties, you can even make your own. I'm sure you've come across them, at stores...you know the type...anyways, I rather prefer sandalwood and nagchampa, but as it turns out, the poor trees that produce both arent being replanted, or torn down altogether for buildings ~anger~ Incense should also be burned on something fireproof, but if the store youre buying it from sells incense, they've usually got holders to waste your money on too...

Pentacle- The pentacle, as we've gone over, is the five pointed star within a circle which represents the elements connected through protection and magick. In ritual, it represents Earth, and is usually a disk of stone, wax or metal.

Robes- Clothing that you may or may not wear for magickal purposes. They're whatever you want them to look like, so long as they serve the purpose of separating your mind from the mundane world. I have some, its an old black dress that I wear with a cincher, but I dont wear them often. Personally, I think magick can be performed just as well in the clothes on your back. Some believe you dont need clothes at all...and go stark nekkid...

Runes- Runes are Nordic in origin, symbols that represent different aspects of life. Runes can be inscribed on things like candles, drawn on stones or on paper to give an added oomfph of energy to a spell or ritual. Some even wear them to invoke their power. Similar to the Ogham, and hieroglyphs.

Stones-Stones and crystals are used in the same matter as herbs (only dont ingest or burn them...bad results for both). You may draw different energies from them, or charge them for your own purposes. Each has different qualities, and can be worn around or kept in pockets or put in sachets, the possibilities are almost endless...

Sword-Not often seen in many Wiccan practices short of the Celtic and Norse traditions. The Swords like a really big athame, and carves out that circle used for rituals and sacred spaces. I rather like the use of swords, but sometimes they're just to clunky. Not to mention if I've invited more of my erm...hyperactive male friends to a ritual....bad outcomes.

Staff- Like a really big wand, the staff shares many of the same uses as its counterpart. Sometimes topped with a crystal or some oak leaves/acorns, you'll find that Celtic traditions use this, as well as some Native American tribes.

Wand- OoOOooOohh, the wand. Harry Potters got one, as does every other stereotypical wizard out there, and now you want one!!!! Eh, I have several, each have a different use but honestly, I used my athame for much the same reasons. Wands are used to project energy as well, and usually come into play if you're invoking the elements. They can be made of wood, or metal (like my spiral-y copper one I trashed before my friend imparted on me just how much copper was selling for that year), and decorated to your liking. Mine has a crystal at its tip (as crystals are kinda like catalysts of energy), and its handle is wrapped in green cord. I burned symbols on my old one, and superglued stones to my copper one. Wood and metals can be selected for their magickal purposes, as can everything else to enhance power.

Just...if you make it out of wood, try to find a stick from a tree that has already fallen. If you MUST take from a tree or a plant, always give thanks for it later, and if you can, give back.

Anyways, thats about it for the more common tools. There are more out there, but I figure as time progresses.... wink

The most important tools - you need these more than you need the material ones Meri has mentioned:

- Your belief
- Your intent
- Your energy

You can even perform spells with those three alone, you don't need material tools. If you prefer tools though, you don't need to go out and buy expensive things.

To add to Meri's list of tools, the Stylus is a knife or blade used to carve things like runes and other symbols into candles or anything else.

Once you have consecrated a tool for a use of ritual and spells, it is ONLY used for that particular purpose. Especially if you had anointed the tool with an oil. Do not use the tool for other than what you had assigned it for - that goes for candles, the blades, anything. If you want to use the tool for something other than what you had anointed it for, wipe it with some vinegar, though I don't really recommend it. I like to keep what I have for what they were assigned to.

Consecrating and anointing tools is simple; you don't really need to have a closed circle, but you would need symbols for the four elements (for example: a rock for Earth, a cup of water for Water, a fan for Air, and a small candle for Fire, and whatever you have to represent Spirit, or God and/or Goddess). Pass each tool around the altar clockwise, starting in the North, when you come to Water, go to the Spirit in the middle of the altar. Say something simple like, "With the power of (enter element here), I consecrate this (enter tool here)". When you are done, you can anoint the tool with altar oil. If you want, if it's something that can be carved into, like a candle, use your stylus to carve whatever symbols you want. Then, hold the tool in your hands and send your energy into it.

Precisely! All you need to make any spell work is first and foremost, yourself. If you want tools, and are totally stripped of any sort of cash, make them!

Lol my first tools were as follows;
-Butter knife (athame)
-a "borrowed" wine glass (Chalice, also to represent water, and "borrowed" because I put it back afterwards)
-a tealight candle I managed to find, in a candle holder (both things I found around the house, to represent Fire)
-A nice rock that I picked up during a walk (to represent earth)
-A Feather that I found (and was clean!!! to represent air since I couldnt burn incense...often...hehe...)

You dont need the $100 jeweled athame (that will later feel cold and lifeless and you wont use it as much as say...a pocketknife your grandpa gave you), just yourself, and if need be, things that you can easily acquire and mean something to you.

scepter- in between a wand and a staff, i find that this tool is easiest for incorporating all the elements into one tool. It really depends on how one makes it as to what elements are imbued in it.

I once had a scepter i made that was a small branch I found that I toasted over a candle flame (earth, fire), and tied a fallen eagle's feather i found on a trip and a small vial of pure water to the top with a white cord (air, water). It was simple but to me, it was the most beautiful item i ever worked with. I had no other tools at the time because I had to stay at the broom closet at my home due to my parents and my mother found and destroyed it one me while i was at school. But, i'm on my way to getting a new one.

btw, this would also equate to the medicine staff or rain stick of Native Americans.

I learned something about altars by being in the closet. Instead of a basic or typical setting Goddess/Both/God, I just put my two candles for both right next to one another and have makeup in a jar and other things not of spiritual nature placed on my altar.

My altar also includes a spirit altar as well. I have a mini-chicken statue for the chickens that were killed by my room before my family moved in.
It is also for the house spirits as well. They like my rose ring and melon candies from Japan. I have two pennies that have my birthyear on them that I cleaned up.

My parents never ask, I'm just weird to them. xD I also have free range of incense, as often they like the smells. They know I like to collect stones and crystals, so they are never surpised when I bring home a bag of stones/crystals. I'm also going to school to be a chef, so I like to collect herbs. They know I like Tarot, so they are cool with that too.

I do hide: my books, my writings so far, my tools, and my jewelery. Also anything with a pentacle on it. Although... I did have my pentacle earrings and they said: "Oh! Nice, star earrings!" I was relieved. ><''

^_^ I just have these for my basic tools:

~$0.99 wine goblet
~A wand made from a branch with a piece of quartz attached
~Candles
~Metal pentacle
~$0.50 glass votive container that holds my stones.

That's all.

Does anybody else have their basics they'd want to share?

Meris Basics

-Ceramic sake cup (to hold water, its light blue with a flower on it and quite pretty if you ask meh...$3 on clearance)
-A smooth, fist-sized rock I found at the dunes
-Cheap incense, in a votive holder filled with sand
-Standard red candle

I also bought a cheap athame (for about $6), and painted symbols on the handle. I use it more than my wand (which was made from an oak branch).

Hehe, "Ritual for $20 or less"

Seriously though, if you buy kinda basic and cheap, and add your own personal touches, your tools become much more significant than unloading you paycheck for that dragon knife with flappy wings and plastic rhinestone eyes.

I even found a website that talks about a mini or portable altar. (Good for people in school or on business trips or vacations with strict parents/family.)

Get a small vial of water, a crystal, a feather and a match [or a lighter if you are old enough and school rules allow lighters, if you are caught that is.] Put those items in a small pouch that has enough space for workings. Then it's ready to go with you!

[To Meri: I have been inspired by your basic athame with the butterknife. It makes me want to get one! :3]

As for tools here, I have saved money towards an athame. I have a buttload of incense, and many different stones. I do have some candles. My list includes this:

"Mini"-Athame (I say this because it's only a 3 inch dagger)
Incense
Many different types of jewelry
Stones
Tarot Cards
Runes
Candles
And a vial of holy water that was actually blessed at Mt. St John.

Mt. St John is a local monastery that was founded by catholics and upkept by monks. I use this on my alter because I'm eclectic, I believe that just about every god exists, including the christian one, and that tools blessed under his name could be just as useful if re-blessed for ritual use. That, and catholic churches have one of the greatest ties to the occult of any christian branch. And seeing as how it was given to me by my celtic friend, who is also eclectic, and well endowed with knowledge of the occult, I figured it serves just as well.

I'm also working on a staff, then a wand after that. The staff is being made out of a branch that was cut from a tree in my neighbors front lawn. I watched the tree get cut down. I asked while the tree was being cut if it would allow me to use any of its branches for a staff. I turned my head to watch the branch the tree was giving me fall, and without hesitation picked it up and took it with me. The energy still resides in it, and I've already de-barked it, and started the sanding process. Once it's fully sanded, and smooth, I'm going to put finish on it, paint it black, and etch runes into it. I'm going to attach either a quartz or a black onyx stone to the top, and use it for chaos magick.

@Ren: I still think (although maybe after a little discussion) that your parents would be accepting of your path. I'm not saying you should just blurt it out, but I honestly think that after a bit they'd grow accustom to it. You obviously know your parents better than I, but I just can't see them as the type of people that would shun you for being true to your spirituality.

Lol in the "traditional universe", yes athames would be double bladed and black-handled. However, I've seen dozens with different designs, single bladed, metal-handled, and so on. Athames are used to direct energy (which is why you so often see some rituals using a wand instead, they're almost interchangeable), its appearance comes second to its use. I mean, you can produce the same results with your index finger even!

Ritual supplies can get costly, and since Paganism wins over its converts at an early age when all you've got is pocket money/older people have little more money than them, many supplies get improvised. The butter knife was still a blade, a dull one, and served the same purpose as any other, to cut. Be it toast and eggs or a sacred space...the line is a little blurry. It was perfect to my 16 year old self, and I felt a bit more safe due to its common appearance and dull edge. Butter knives are often seen amongst kitchen witches as well, who tend to spring for what they've already got.

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you feel you need a tool and dont have the money to go out and buy it, try your hand at making it. Get creative! I painted the handle of that butter knife black, and the blade looked as though it had two sides. So long as you can still perform work...looks are minor details.

p.s. I'll go skyclad as well, if its warm enough outside (I'm surrounded by trees and my neighbors arent in a position where they can see me), though if it is a spell or even an esbat, I'll wear street clothes. Mind you, my street clothes look somewhat similar to ritual wear on a good day
xp
