YAY! I love cleansing, partly cause I love to feel clean, relaxed, at peace. Cleansing can be done on yourself, others, things (like tools), whatever! You can do it before casting a spell or a ritual to get rid of the nasties you may have picked up through the day. You wouldnt want the stress of a Monday eeking out of you when you're trying to a healing spell...it'd just make whatever you're trying to heal feel worse.
SO! Cleanse thyself! One of the most popular ways is to take a bath or a shower. I prefer the shower method, as I can meditate and it feels like I'm standing under a waterfall (feels awesome). Taking a bath is nice if you like to soak. You may add salt crystals, or bath salts, as salt is from the earth, which naturally cleanses. Or you may just want water, straight up, which is also good. Many methods say that a bubble bath or using soap isnt advised, but I feel that it doesnt matter. Physically cleaning yourself is a good thing!
Another way is to smudge. Smudging is a Native American practice that uses Sage, an herb that was sacred for purification. Sage sticks can be bought at many New Age store, organic food stores, or specialty shops (usually if you can get hookah, sages is prolly there too...).
Anyways, you burn the sage and waft the smoke around you or whatever it is that you want to cleanse. The smoke is pretty strong, so I suggest doing it outside, or opening a LOT of windows. The smoke smells rather like burnt Italian food, but honestly I like it. Sometimes, sage sticks are bundled with other herbs such as sweet grass, cedar, or lavender. My favorite recipe is as follows, just cause it smells just so damn pretty.
Meris Cleansing Blend
Equal parts of
-White Sage
-Lavender flowers
-Dried rose petals, ground up.
A blend such as this would be loose, so if you were to burn it, it would need to be done in something fireproof like a shell or a cauldron or a pan. Usually, shells are used to hold smoldering sage sticks, as they are fireproof, somewhat small, and easier to tote around than a pan.
Thats about it for smudging. Its actually a rather peaceful thing to do either before or after meditating, and I'll do it if something bad happened in my life. Just to clear the air wink
