For all you saxophone players... I'm currentally using a friends alto sax for jazz band and she needs it back because her little brother is going to pick up alto. I'm thinking about asking my parents to help me buy/rent one for my christmas present and was wondering what brands of saxes you think are the best and what you would recomend for both jazz and classical playing.

Classical and jazz i'd probably say try for a Yanigisawa if it's out of your pricerange than go for a Vito or Yamaha they're pretty much the same instrument with different names. Both are great for jazz ,classical and marchingband. I'm tinking in the means of a starting horn though Yamaha and Vito are usually sold in most stores and also rented out as well. Dont get any used Jupiters actually dont get Jupiter at all. Conn is okay new or used but I never really got a good impression out of the saxes that werent old pro horns like the Naked Lady model. Selmer is alright as well but i'd rather go for a pro or intermediate horn if i was buying or renting that. Vito and Yamaha are also easy to repair but are also very sturdy and for the price they are awsome!

Yamaha is pretty hard to beat for an inexpensive horn.
I had a King in high school that I liked...
A good mouthpiece will make any horn sound better than it is.
If it's at all possible, go somewhere where they let you try out the horns (some places will ask you to bring a mouthpiece, or buy the reed they let you use). That is really the best way to find what you like. Each horn will be different, even two of the same make and model.
I have the top of the line US Selmer now that I am very happy with... you get the Selmer name and tone, but not the Paris price!

I have a Yamaha YAS-23 and it's a beautiful horn, you can get it on eBay for well under 1000 bucks. The only problem is that it doesn't have a high F#, but few horns of this range do.

I have an old Buescher 400 alto that I got on eBay for around $800. It plays beautifully for what I paid for it, and was manufactured sometime around 1965. Definitely a fan of the vintage horns heart

Me and Hector (hornfreak) both play on our YAS-875's for jazz and marching. I like the response and flexibilty of it, as well as the dark sound you can produce with a good Rovner and C*. I have a Yanagisawa tenor (also pro) and it has a very loud, bright appeal to it. If you can find a good Yani on sale, you should probably get it. The only warning I have is with the maintenance, Yanis are made from thinner metal to resonate louder. Vintage horns are finally being outdated, so if you're looking for a pro horn, go for the top of the line selmer or yamahas. As long as you don't buy from L.A. Sax.... lol. The only thing they make ok are they're bass saxes (for a small sum of $38,000 x___x) Stay clear from cheapo brands (Jean Baptiste... ugh chinese ><) because they arent even worth the couple huindred you slam down from em. You should also look into set ups, especially depending on the tonality you wish to produce.

How did you get away with a 400 dollar bari?!?! My Tenor was about 900 bucks, and that was after guilting the guy who was selling it into dropping the price! (It was used and has a tiny dent in it, actully I just reminded myself I should probably get that fixed...)
