I was thinking of making my own CV knock off game. 2-d sidescrolling of course. I'm having a tough time deciding on what weapon system to use. I really enjoyed the Soul System and the DSS Cards. I was thinking of doing a combo of the two, different card combos change weapon abilities. EX: using a fire card and a sword would result in bonus fire damage, but using a fire card and a gun weapon would result in a flamethrower combo. The added effects would be an alternate attack and use MP. Crash and Passive abilities would also would be present.
If anyone else has any critiques, feedback, or ideas.
I won't be making this anytime soon, it might possibly be started mid-summer if at all.

What would you use the Soul System for?
And are you trying to match it with Castlevania's storyline? (Aka.. having only Dracula related people have use of soul system?)

I'm working on the framework (sidescrolling and jumping) and I'm mapping out the attack collision detection (it's a pain in the butt). The souls would probably be in the passive boost section. X soul boosts attack. Y soul boosts defense. Z souls boosts element A attacks and boosts element A resistance.
This is gonna take a while, I'm going to try to make the character model reflect the equipped items. Wearing certain things will make the character look different. I'm thinking about some cool things I can do with this also, like clothing and magic combos. If I ever get close to finishing this game, it's gonna take forever to balance... The story is the least of my worries right now.
It's a pain to do this in Java, seeing as how I have no formal teaching on game programming or design.
