The world, Sammy concluded, was quite like a frog growing up. Or at least this is what Scout told him. There was winter and then there was summer and in between was mud. He cringed and twitched his wings at the thought of the gooey substance. Scout said winter was full of cold nights and steaming hot chocolate, maybe a book but it was often long. And yes, Sam has been around long enough to know that the nights were pleasantly cold and the hot chocolate was freakishly sweet. He grinned at the thought of the starry nights with frozen skies and far too much snow that he could get lost in.

Summer on the other hand, was full of golden suns, freckles and lots and lots of fun. Unfortunately it is not summer yet. Like a frog growing up there is that awkward phase with both legs and tail and you’re caught in the middle attempting to wiggle swim and only succeed in stubbing a toe or smashing into reeds. This was the season known as Mud.

“No no, Samuel.” Lucas said with his nose buried deep in interesting papers of trench wars. “It’s called spring.”

Sam desperately wanted to believe him. However, thus far Scout seemed to have the lead. Both flip flops have been abandoned in the mud as they made their way down to the thawed pond. Golden orbs gazed at the sparse trees and flowing grass, bright green in youth. Scout lead the way with a small fishing rod while Sam was stuck with the bait box. Luckily the sun had been out long enough and it was an oddly warm spring day. Birds twittered and the first bugs swarmed around the drying land. Today they were going fishing.

It was one of those odd wild hair sort of things when Nos looked up at his mother and announced that he wanted to try this activity called 'Fishing'. The announcement had amused Mama 'Nym' Vivisali to a rather large extent but the white haired woman had agreed to it and in the end the only people that were going was her and her rather rambunctious bat-winged son. Magdalena didn't want to go because it sounded boring and dirty, and Daedalus didn't want to go because he wanted to help keep an eye on Magdalena who wasn't going anyways and Jolie just wanted to chill out at home and watch after the shop. These things suited Nosferatu just fine, he wanted mommy to himself.

So now they were approaching the pond with Nosferatu carrying the rods and Mama carrying the bait-and-tackle that they had pretty much bought on the recommendation of a reputable man by the name of Logan.

Nos was the first one there since he was pretty much excited about the whole prospect of fishing. This was going to be awesome! Fishes were gonna bite! Certainly there would be sharks, sharks were everywhere! He glanced around and not too far away was another pair also going about the task of fishing. Fun! "Hi! Fishing for sharks?" he announced happily toward the owl-boy and his caretaker.

The white haired woman chuckled as she came to a stop near Nosferatu and she watched her son while she got the area ready for their fishing adventure. Since she barely knew the mechanics of how it worked it would be an interesting experience for all involved.

Scout stopped, small toes digging into the dirt as she gave a judging glare at the two newcomers that only a seven-year-old could pull off before deeming them harmless and grinning broadly. Granted she was a bit upset about the prospect of sharing her pond with others. But the boy was tiny and easily subdued especially if the old gran was there to care for him. She merely looked towards the old woman and tilted the brim of a nonexistent hat before ushering Sam towards the dock not five yards away.

Sammy on the other hand was a bit distraught at this new information. Now he like research… so he knew what sharks were and quite frankly they looked mean. He threw a cautious glance towards Mason, the invisible ghost-guide floating along in a slouched manner. The surfer’s spirit merely shrugged off the prospect of sharks. He was use to the nippy ones and didn’t quite get the difference between bodies of water in his new…dead state.

Cautiously Sam squeaked out, “There are sharks?!” In a small voice, clawed toes dug into the bare earth as amber eyes widened to large disks in surprise. “I thought they lived in the ocean.” There seemed to be a grave error in either his research or the smaller boy’s statement. The bat-boys stature looked sure, however, and no where near a fibbing pose. Sharp eyes categorized the other Hiccup in seconds and this could only mean that he was telling the truth.

Nos grinned over at the owl-boy and nodded happily. As far as the bat-winged boy knew sharks lived in water and that included this little pond. Still that girl was dragging his new vict--friend away. Not that he meant to victimize the other boy for all Nos knew his words were truth and such is the curse of the young and not entirely educated. The batboy moved closer as he went on to explain, "Yah! They eat everything like omnomnom," he used his human hands to demonstrate forming them into a maul that chomped.

Nym wasn't old physically anymore but it was hard to tell considering the woman was covered in shawls and all anyone saw was a set of young looking hands. How she could stand to be dressed in such a way and not feel uncomfortable was probably beyond most people. The woman looked toward her son and let out a small huff, "Don't move away, Nosferatu, you said you wanted it."

The small boy looked back at his guardian and offered a small huff of his own, but now he wanted to talk to this boy! He needed to in order to live, plus now that he took in the scenery fishing seemed so boring. Nosferatu was looking forward to seeing some shark fins crest the waters or something but nothing even seemed to flicker across the pond's surface other than mundane fish and little bugs. His own little bat-toes gripped at the muddy bank as he determinedly moved forward once more causing his mother to mutter a string of words in Italian before she moved to pick everything up and follow her son.

Sammy was quite enthralled by this turn of events. Tail feathers shifted uneasily as he walked, wings stretching half-length and shut tight against his back once more as a gesture to his discomfort. Apparently today was the day they were all going to die and he just hadn’t caught the memo. Large eye turned back towards the ghost hovering after Scout, pleading in a ‘Dude, you should have told me this before we went’, the transparent being merely neglected his ward and itched the seat of his Hawaiian print swim pants. “Will…we get eaten if we are at the edge of the dock? Shouldn't we stay away from the water?” Sam spouted out to this complete stranger. Well not entirely complete, sharp hearing had definitely picked up a name somewhere. Something with an ‘N’ and possibly ending in ‘tutu’ there was also an ‘s’ in there somewhere. The hiccup couldn’t quite recall and stuck with the brooding subject of him possibly living through this fishing trip.

“And why are they so hungry?” He almost bit his tongue because it wasn’t good to ask to many questions… Scout normally would smack him. He wrung his hands together as wings came around his ribs in a defensive move. Sharks…were bad. Sam would know since Scout made him watch Jaws instead of the preferred Fern Gully. He stumbled awkwardly on his large feet before catching himself in the need of a new conversation started besides looking like a weirdo.

“I’m Sam by the way.” He mumbled as he followed behind, tackle box suddenly weighing far too much.

Whether or not the smaller boy noted the owl-boy's glances toward someplace distant it didn't show. Nos just followed determinedly to the dock and was followed equally as determinedly by his guardian who was now stuck carrying everything. Nym had been thankful that her youth was mostly restored by now as she carried the poles and tackle and striding behind in her cover. If she didn't love the little sprat so much she'd have just left him.

"Dunno, as long as you don't bleed in th' waters y'should be fine. Sharks love blood." Nos said all-knowingly as he followed along. "Also, I saw a movie, where sharks came up from the toilets. Very small sharks but still sharks," Nosferatu sneaked a lot of late night television and usually tended to watch independent horror films. "Toilet sharks don't wait for blood though..."

"Nos," replied the batboy as he walked with Sam, his clawed feet touching on the wood of the docks with smallish clicks.
