As you might know, I am very new to competitive battling. I have tried on several occasions to make teams, and they generally all fail...
Now I was wondering, what are some of the things you take into consideration when creating a team? How do you start? Do you have any structure?
Thanks.

Research. Also, battle using the first team that comes to mind- You'll pick up new strategies as you go.

hatch them from eggs is the first thing I do... I don't know why. check their nature. It has to be the nature I want. It took me forever to get a bold feebas, but I got it eventually after 72 hatches. Then I save and give it exp share and verse a strong pokemon with one of my high lvl pokemon. I'd check it's IV's with the IV calculator, and if I don't like it, I release it. (thank goodness that feebas was worth it... 31 IV for defence)

I start with a favorite(mine was magmortar) and build a team from there. I soon go into synergy and Breed some walls. My teams look like this: 3 sweepers 2 walls 1 tank
But thats just me.

First thing I do is either judge it by type (if I'm making a mono type team) or judge it by looks.
I only make pokemon I look the way they look xd

For double battles you need to balance weakness. You never want a steel and grass Pokemon out at the same time if the person has a charard out. This is the knowledge from Michael of the clouds

Normally when I make a team I just try my type-trumping skills. I make sure my teams are quite well balanced in types and have very diverse movesets so to be prepared for any situation.

1)Make sure your Pokemon can cover the strengths and weaknesses of the other Pokemon in your team. For Example:I Have an Infernape,Floatzel, Roselia.
Infernape can help when Floatzel is dealing with Grass Floatzel can help when Roselia is dealing with Fire Roselia can help when Infernape is dealing with Water
(That's not my entire team, but the strongest part of my team.)
2)Always make sure you have a variety of Pokemon types, so there would Pokemon who can knock-out the other Pokemon
3)It would be bad to have the same type because their weakness would wipe all your Pokemon out.
4)Make sure your Pokemon get an equal chance to battle other Trainers because you can't keep getting the Pokemon that is strong and replace them on your team.
5)Give them items.Exp. Share is highly recommended for the weakest Pokemon on your team. Also, there are a few Berries that weaken the super-effective type. Those are good too.
Well thats all I got.Hopefully it helps.
