"Lin! You just got back from the Borderlands yesterday," Donovan growled out as he watched his daughter dash pass him armed and ready for travel.

Not that she would have to travel a far distance at all, but she figured she might as well make it a habit.

"But I haven't made a visit yet and who knows how many years it's been," Lin protested in return as she stopped a moment to grab mochi (Kara's pregnacy seemed to have caused an over bundance of sweets).

"Bye Daddy! See you in a few hours!"

Donovan sighed, "If she wasn't ageless and an adult...."

She didn't hear though she was already off to the portal room, and through the portal. Triton it seemed had neglected to tell her where in the palace she would end up though, or she forgot to ask.

Lin blinked several times, adjusting to the lack (no light).

"I know I have a flashlight in here somewhere...." Lin murmured.

In the darkness of the corridor, a small, shadowy figure was crouching, but at the sound of the voice it pressed up against the wall. The figure was no more than three feet tall - quite possibly shorter. In the silence, short, quick breaths could be heard.

A single beam of light shone in the darkness as she scanned the area with her flashlight. She looked around, it sort of reminded her of being in the Southland except here was light down there.

"Now... which way... Triton said I would find it more interesting to do this myself," Lin murmured.

She more wondered how they could already have an area down.. .wherever she was.

As the light flashed down the black corridor, there was a frightened squeal, and the tiny figure scrambled to its feet and started skittering away from the light - slowly, feeling their way along the wall because of the blackness. In the beam of light, a flash of bright clothes and black hair could be seen.

"What the...." Lin murmured trying to follow where those clothes and hair was seen.

Well it was obvious she wasn't alone at least, but she didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

"Who's there?"

There was a sudden splat and a yelp, and in the flashlight's beam, a tiny child could be seen - a little girl with a short but colourful skirt and a white blouse. Wavy black hair fell to her shoulders, thin and wispy, and as she found herself in the light, she curled up in a ball and held her hands over her head, as if she were trying to defend herself.

Lin blinked, she had not been expecting that (though why she wasn't expecting that was questionable). She slowly crept up to the child, afraid of making her cry.

"Hey there," she murmured as she used a hand to open her bag setting free her four most trusted butterflies (well they were half butterflies).

Fai, her blue and yellow butterfly and perhaps the most showy of them floated his way towards the little girl, while the others were more than happy to stay close, they couldn't see in the dark.

The girl whimpered softly and curled up tighter. She was obviously very young, her arms and legs pudgey with the baby fat that had not yet been shed, her hair not yet long enough to need cutting. She shrank away from the butterfly - such a creature as she had never seen before, it was frightening to her ...

Well this wasn't a good sign Lin thought to herself, she never thought of her butterflies as scary (even though they were huge).

"Fai, come back here, you're scaring her," Lin called back her fluttering friend, "Don't be scared, he just likes to show off."

One arm lowered, and a large hazel eye peered over at Lin, bright with fear - but there was also curiosity in that gaze, now that the butterfly was gone. Slowly, nervously, the child sat up and rubbed one eye with the back of her hand, and then she looked up at Lin, seeing nothing more than a silhouette because of the light that was shining in her face.

"Sorry about that, they're a bit eager," Lin smiled but then realized that maybe the little girl couldn't see her as well as she could see her.

She turned to cast the light down the hallway, now where she's supposed to go?

"It's really dark in here, maybe it would be better if we got out to where there is light? It might be less scary if you could actually see me."

She should have gotten one of the light bottles instead, Lin thought, they would cast light everywhere and at least someone could see her.

The little girl just stared at Lin silently. There was no movement at all, nothing to indicate that she might have heard or understood Lin's words - but the child's expression softened slightly, and she continued to gaze at Lin, as if she were trying to see her in the darkness, make out a face ...

And then suddenly she climbed slowly to her feet and toddled over to Lin and tugged on her pant leg, then held up both arms to her.

"Up," she said in the High Elven tongue.

Lin paused and blinked before picking the girl up, even if she hadn't understood the gestures read out loud and clear. How old was this child? Then again she recalled her brothers saying that little elven children were very bright.

She was sure they had been talking about Earendil at the time.

"Where to?" she inquired in return.

The little girl snuggled into Lin's arms and laid her head on Lin's shoulder before popping her thumb into her mouth and sucking on it contentedly. She didn't seem inclined to reply - but the corridor only ran in one direction, and so there was only one way for Lin to go.

Lin turned and went down the hallway, flashing her light to see the stonework, it was unlike that of the Southland, and it seemed... old. She was grateful at least the girl wasn't running screaming from her or anything of the like. She still didn't know what to expect as she went down the path.
