ok, this is a saxophone guild and so far we've only had a few post concerning mixed instruments and flutes stare we're behind the power curve here. So, as you can see, this post is about saxophones and saxophones only. So please feel free to post anything here about saxophones.

I am a bit torn on what to play in jazzband. For years i've been playing first tenor spot and i am pretty comfortable there. Especially since i get alot of solo time. Recently i've been playing alot of alto and have been getting a better lead sound. We just recently lost our lead alto player and he was quite talented and has some big shoes to fill. I could play his part and take over but i love playing the first tenor spot so much and dont want to give it away to the second tenor. Since he's not as good a soloist as i am. My director would rather have me on first tenor so he could just throw all teh solos at me but i'm really enjoying playing alto so i'm kinda torn as to what to do.

Hmmmm... well, I'm a lead tenor myself hahaha so I'd just tell you to keep at the lead tenor. But I have semi-reliable second tenors (They play the flute and don't care for the saxophone, they're my best friends and they play the sax because they want to be in jazz band) It would do good to give the second tenor lead that way, they can improve their soloing skills and you get to play lead alto.

It's a matter of ability that i dont want to give up the first tenor part. Unfortunately we still havent found anybody that can fill the shoes of our last lead alto player. The second tenor player is a great musican and he can read and play very well. The problem is he isnt a great soloist and if he played first tenor he'd get lots of solo opportunities. That's why my director wants me on first tenor. I'd be happy if we found someone that was good or better than our last lead alto player then i'd stay on first tenor.

interesting... I used to know the spiderman theme on my alto but i think i forgot it... ><
so I want to know the companies that people find the most reliable. I've had the best luck with Jupiter, I switched from a Yamaha tenor sax to a Jupiter tenor sax and it was considerably better, Yamaha is actually harder to blow through and it's noticeable. I had someone say that they were impressed with their Cecilio sax so it really depends on who's playing it. That's why I want to know.

My Alto is a Selmer Paris Super Action 80 Series II
My Tenor is a vintage King Zephyr from the 1960's. It's not THAT vintage, but still.
@Moss Star: Yamahas and Selmers are widely accepted as the top brands, and I tend to agree. But then again, I haven't played with any other brands other than those two, aside from my tenor, so I really can't compare with the other brands.

I play a Tenor Sax 1st chair but our band really doesn't do much solo parts but when we do their small parts but I like the way the band sounds when they play together My Sax is a Jupiter brand to I've also played a Yamaha I liked the Jupiter better it was older but I liked it cause I played notes better to me.
