Well… that was interesting. At first, Mal had done exactly what he did best: try to wriggle his way out of trouble. That is to say, he attempted to look as innocent as possible. For once, it was actually a true look since he honestly felt that he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. It simply wasn’t fair. He had been trying to stay out of trouble for once since he really did want to stay at the Weyr and yet it found him anyway.

Speaking of trouble finding him… he made an effort to keep his back to a wall at all times. Word had gotten around by now and rumor pointed at him as being one of the reasons why all the Candidates had latrine duty. Trouble had already found him once this week and he sported a new black eye for his trouble. Thankfully, Aeron had intervened before things had gotten much worse. What a wonderful little firelizard he was. Mal’s gray eyes glanced around the corridor, just to make sure the coast was relatively clear: today, he was supposed to be meeting his new roommates---or so he hoped----and he preferred to avoid getting hurt any more. Aeron let out a low growl and wrapped his tail around Mal’s neck, a clear indication that, if anyone wanted the young man, they had to get through approximately three feet of firelizard.

Thankfully, just as quickly as bad news like Mal got around, bad news like Aeron followed. While he was awake, Mal would be relatively safe. Still carefully scraping against the wall, the ex-Harper darted into his new room and let out a sigh. Safe. At least for now. He briefly shifted his meager belongings to his other arm and glanced about the room. It was… tiny. No, really. It could probably fit two snugly, but, from what he heard, there were at least three others besides him. Four to a room.

Mal dumped his things on one of the beds----he chose one close to a wall, because the principle was sound, right----and then thought about this. Four to a room. Oh Faranth…

Aeron let out a curious trill, sensing a sudden stream of anxiety from his human. The large Bronze firelizard flared his wings and hissed experimentally, wondering if, perhaps, Mal sensed something he couldn’t. It didn’t seem likely; these humans were practically deaf to the signals around them!

The thing was this: Mal had just realized that he would be trapped in a very tiny room with three people who would have good reason to hate his guts. “On second thought, Aeron, maybe leaving the Weyr isn’t such a bad idea…” he said half-heartedly without any real feeling behind it.

Veyes had been through a few miserable days but he was shrugging it off as this was what life at the Weyr was going to be like from now on. He hadn't wished to cause trouble but that's all that seemed to be happening lately. Damn Candidate Master! It was easier to push off the majority of the issue on this a** because the man had set this up and enjoyed it.

Sometimes that was enough to make Veyes seethe again but lately even that idea had mellowed into just a quiet mulling. It wasn't worth his energy because he didn't have time to spare for it because watching his back became a sport that he had to play with all due diligences. Plus, now he was going to be rooming with someone which could make matters even worse depending on who arrived in his small space.

It wasn't that he couldn't live with company, he just didn't want an "enemy" closer to make matters even worse for him. Although with all the other alcoves so dang close, he already felt uncomfortable whenever he came to the dorm. So he rarely stayed here and kept everything important to him on his person.

When he pulled back the curtain and stepped into the room. It was then he saw that he wasn't alone but the boy before him was someone he knew. As he walked in he heard those words Mal spoken so it caused him to tense as he didn't know what to expect as he walked towards his cot and checked it over. Today, they had left it alone...Thankfully.

"So...you're bunking in here now, Mal?" he questioned in a low careful voice not wishing make himself known to any others that might be close by. He knelt down by his chest; then pulled the bag of migsy balls off his belt and tucked them inside the chest. For now, they'd be safe while he was here.

"I thought the corner alcove was a good idea when I first got here but sometimes you can still hear the snoring." he smiled faintly and sat down on his cot. "Not sure how many their going to stuff in here. Umm...how have you been."

Veyes. Facing away from the other boy, Mal scowled, a most unfamiliar expression for the normally cheerful lad. Oh, he knew that voice and he blamed him fully for everything that had happened. Why had he stolen the wine? It wasn’t like the kitchens wouldn’t have given him some wine if he had asked… a little voice----the voice of reason, or something like it----piped up and pointed out, Oh yes. Because, you know, the kitchens weren’t at all busy and would be completely able to take a few minutes of their time to hand over a wineskin to a Candidate. It’s not like there was a Feast going on or anything…

Aeron’s eyes swirled red and orange, a reflection of Mal’s own feelings. That and the Bronze firelizard really was just a temperamental little bugger. Opening his wings wide, the flitt tried to make himself look much bigger than he was as he opened his mouth and hissed. It was all very impressive, especially if you were, say, a trundlebug. At least, Aeron thought it looked rather impressive.

“Yes, yes, Aeron. You’re very tough…” Mal said wearily, finally turning to look at Veyes. “So. Roommates, huh?”

Roommates… that meant, to Mal, that they had to at least try to get along. Sure, he was still angry over the while incident, but whining about it now wouldn’t change anything. Besides, Veyes had probably gotten off even worse than the ex-Harper, since people thought of him as the ‘ringleader’ of the so-called ‘thieves’. Finally, he dropped the glare and smiled wanly. “I suppose you’ve been getting things worse than me, huh? Things have been alright, besides the occasional surprise if I don’t keep my wits about. Some of my last roommates had taken to emptying out their latrine duty in my cot. Judging by the way you were looking at yours, I’m guessing you’ve had a similar experience.”

While Mal was warming up, Aeron still looked angry and let out another hiss. He always felt left out when people weren’t paying attention to him.

“Don’t mind Aeron. He’s really just a lot of hot air.”

Veyes caught the scowl immediately and that really told him everything he needed to know so his eyes never quite met Mal's preferring to be wary of hands or feet...or a fire lizard that might react. He expected bad things from everyone so he just didn't care to take any chances. It wasn't hard to guess Mal's feelings because the more he met dragons and flits they reflected their owners more honestly.

So he pulled himself upon his cot and leaned against the other wall shoulders sagging just a little from the stress. At least one side was protected and cool against his back. "Yeah.. I guess we are roommates." he answered with a rather bland tone that neither meant to encourage or provoke conversation.

He nodded as he listened to Mal it was about all reaction he would give; "I suppose I am...I don't know. Guess everyone has it hard all around." He sighed as Mal spoke of his cot, "Yeah...been there too. Sorry you're stuck with this lot." he said slowly. "I doubt they'll give ya another room but I won't bug ya. Ah...don't worry...you're lizard is just being honest and I don't expect better."

He quietly pulled his sheet around himself finding a small bit of comfort in its newly washed feeling then turned a little to curl up against the wall hoping that in time he'd be unnoticed.

Oh yeah. Veyes had definitely faced worse than Mal. At least the ex-Harper was fast enough on his feet----and gifted with a fairly slick mind----that he was able to avoid some of the punishment at the hands of the Candidates. E’rik had once called him a ‘slitherer-outer’, which was a pretty apt description.

“Nah. I don’t think I’ll change rooms. Even if I do change rooms, I’ll still have to room with someone who’s angry at me for some reason or another. Besides, we’re in the same boat. Might as well room with someone from the same boat. That way, we can be seasick together!” He paused to think about that for a moment before waving it away. “Alright, so the metaphor sort of fell apart, but, really. We’re both in the same situation. I bet we could help each other, you know? Sort of watch one another’s back?”

He sent a mild glare at Aeron before looking back at Veyes with a small shrug. “Anyway, Aeron hates everyone. Don’t take it too hard. He doesn’t even like me much, to tell you the truth. At least, I don’t think he likes me much. It’s hard to tell…”

Settling down on his cot, Mal sat down cross-legged, just watching Veyes for a moment, a new plan forming in his mind. They really were in on this together, weren’t they? He had suggested working together as a means of cheering the other boy up, but it had some actual merits. Anger was all very well and good, but sometimes it was best to just put it aside. He’d rather not get beaten up any more than beat up Veyes. Besides, he was fairly sure that attacking another Candidate was against the rules. “Veyes? You still awake? Come on, don’t make me get my poking stick. What do you think?”
PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 3:02 pm

Veyes tried to just ignore the conversation but Mal's voice was one of those you had a hard time just closing your ears off from. But he kept his mouth pretty much shut while the ex-harper tried to describe their situation a kin to seasickness; although Veyes had never been sea sick nor on a boat so he really didn't have the context to put it all together. But the comment about helping each other made him wonder what the other was getting at although he didn't raise his head and remained quiet.

There was no way of knowing if what Mal said of Aeron was the truth or not, he hardly knew the boy or the flit so anything was possible. However, it was nice that Mal tried to put a better spin on it than what the context of his own thoughts actually portrayed.

For moments, he could feel the eyes upon him and tried not to think, worry, or care. But he had to agree, they were both in the same unfortunate situation even if Mal didn't deserve to be in the mess with him. "Yeah...I'm still awake, Mal." he finally answered softly rolling back towards the man keeping the sheets around himself. "What do you want to do? If I help you...won't they look at you funny even more? I really don't want to get ya into trouble." Actually, he wondered why people gave him the bitter end as if he had "set up" the party. He'd done nothing of the sort. He hadn't even asked the others to show up at the lake...it had all been chance.

Mal was simply one of those people who was difficult to shut out. He generally found ways to make certain he couldn’t be ignored, as if not being at the center of attention would mean his very death. Most people would’ve shut up by now since it was obvious that Veyes just wanted to get a nap while he could. But Mal thought of himself as being cleverer than that. For one thing, he read people while others read books. Which was really silly, he thought; those people thought you could see things in books, but you couldn’t, on account of the books getting in the way.

People though, now there was a skill. As Veyes finally turned around, Mal knew he had struck gold and gave his new roommate a bright grin. “Maybe. But they’re already not all that fond of me. I would say that it can’t get any worse, but human nature is pretty creative… it can always get worse…” ok, he was losing track of his own thoughts again. Waving a hand derisively, he dropped that topic entirely, reminding himself of the point here.

“Look, the thing is, we both know the truth, right? And nothing we say or do is going to change the minds of others. They’ve already got it set in their mind that we deliberately and maliciously avoided the Feast and stole from the Weyr. So, really… why shouldn’t we try to work together? At least then we’ll both be able to sleep soundly, even if it is in shifts. Besides, I’d like to actually make friends while I’m here and the prospects of that seem pretty thin after this misunderstanding of ours.”

Veyes stared at Mal with the most perplexed look upon his face. The other easily shifted the most miserable situation into a more positive light. Something that he found difficult to do as of late - thinking positive. When he was dreaming, he was a much more optimistic soul than he was in real life but when he originally started this journey, he had set forth to change his life some how at whatever the cost. However, recently it seemed life had overwhelmed that original intent and left him in a pessimistic place.

But still he mulled the words over as Mal spoke. He wasn't too far off that no one really liked them and well yeah...it could get worse; Mal never met his father. Though he doubted that anyone could compare.

Slowly his mind engaged more into the conversation as Mal hatched a plan, "I suppose we...could work together. Sleep in shifts?" He never thought about that before. Well, he never had a roommate here either. But the idea seemed almost sound in theory...however, the friends part, that might take longer. After screwing things up with Con, he just felt a little numb about his ability to be a good friend. Not that he had tried to hurt Conomor intentionally, but he doubted he would forget the look on Con's face as he walked away.

If the positive side of things could be found it seemed that Mal was determined to find it. That big broad smile was actually the first one he had seen directed at him from someone other than L'thor since the start of this mess. His mother would have pushed him forward and coaxed him to try again. He knew that even if he wanted to crawl back further into his personal shell. "Yeah...I guess friends are few and far between. Ok...we can give it a try."

Slowly he pulled his hand out of the sheet and held it out to Mal.

"So...tell me more about...your plan?"

It wasn’t so much that Mal thought in a positive way. It was more than he liked to think ‘gee, how can I turn this situation to my advantage?’. Which rather explained why he liked chaos, actually. Whenever there were massive amounts of chaos and confusion, he could be certain of finding a way to come out on top. One just had to think carefully, that was all.

Although, admittedly, right now he’d settle for being able to sleep soundly. It was clear that Veyes was coming around, thankfully, being as it was a pretty decent idea. When the other boy finally saw a glimmer of sense in the plan, Mal’s grin only widened, threatening to take over his entire face. “Glad to hear it, Veyes,” he said, eagerly shaking the other Candidate’s hand.

“Well, mostly I was thinking that we’d just try to keep an eye on each other. And the rumors. I imagine that you’ve been jumped more times than me so far. You know how it is… you walk around a corner and you end up getting a faceful of a sock filled with rocks or something. See, I figure that, with two pairs of ears whispering we’ll be able to avoid situations like that. We’ll be able to better avoid traps of that nature, cos they take planning, right? We’ll hopefully hear about plans. And, of course, if one of us gets into trouble the other can run for help. Or at least send Aeron out for help.”

At the mention of his name, Aeron gave Veyes a mad and distant look before hissing. Then the firelizard scuttled under Mal’s cot, apparently seeing something that he wanted. Or, perhaps, he just liked scuttling around. Who knew?

“And sleeping in shifts, of course. I’d rather not miss another night of sleep just ‘cos I don’t like the way the kid in the cot next to mine keeps grinning at me.”
PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 7:33 pm

Watching Mal's grin broaden reminded Veyes a little of a mad man on a wild strain of thought as he pulled his hand away and slipped it back under the sheets. "I can keep a look out but I've been changing my patterns up lately when I walk so people aren't able to guess which way I'm going. Sometimes you can't do that though." he said thoughtfully. "Some of them could wait in the halls close to the Latrine or in the Latrine."

He had taken some serious thought about the situation as he tried to figure out ways to evade the other candidates. There were few places he knew were dangerous - dead end rooms that folks tried to do hit and runs. Most didn't want to be caught trying something and in a Weyr this crowded the other candidates didn't want to take chances at getting caught. Although he wasn't sure anything would happen to the others if they did.

Veyes glanced at Aeron with a furrowed brow, "Ya sure he's up to that task?" as he watched the creature squirm under the cot like an angry little beasty.

"So...umm...I'm on a early shift for...cleaning because I wake up before the morning light. What shift did you get assigned?" He felt only lucky in the sense that he was able to get out of seeing tons of candidates that early. Most didn't like his hours...most he met never worked on a farm.

Yeah, changing patterns made sense. Mal nodded in agreement, having followed a similar technique. Sooner or later, he knew they would get bored of trying to attack the Candidates. At least, once their punishment was over with. After that, perhaps, some of the anger would drain. Mal was a forgiving guy; he wouldn’t hold grudges for very long and saw no reason why anyone else would. “Plus, there’s safety in numbers, you know. Maybe, when there’s two of us, they’ll decide to go find someone else to beat up.” He doubted that, but, hey. Anything was worth a thought, right?

“Aww… don’t doubt Aeron here. He’s a good boy.” Like most pet owners, Mal would insistently claim that his bloodthirsty little monster was, in fact, a cuddly little puppy. “He’s very intelligent. He’s not exactly fond of people, but he’s smart. Like watch this. Aeron! Hey, Aeron!!” Mal got off of his cot and on his knees to try and flush the firelizard out from under the bed. There was a responsive hiss from Aeron, but that was about it. “Oh, come on, Aer. Don’t be like this… go get some food. You know, foooood!”

Aeron responded to that bit. The firelizard’s eyes swirled back to a rarely seen green as he considered this. It wasn’t easy for outsiders to tell, but he was fond of Mal. He just was lousy at showing it. But now Mal was asking him for something… something edible… Aeron replied with a quick chirp and then scurried out from under the cot and shook himself off. With a baleful look over at Veyes, he took off in a brief flight, apparently going out to find food.

“Yeah, I think I’ve got an early shift too. I’ve been trying to grab those since people seem less inclined towards violence if they’ve got to choose between sleep or hitting someone.” Again, he smiled that crooked grin of his, as if this was actually amusing instead of sad. “So, where are you from, Veyes? Like originally? I don’t think you were born here, pardon my saying, on account of you not realizing what a tiff would be thrown over one skin of wine.”
PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 9:23 pm

Veyes nodded in agreement as he shifted his weight on the cot, "Yeah...I doubt they'd want to deal with two of us. You might be right but I don't want them to go after Nehren or the others. He's a softy of a boy but seems really good intentioned." That disturbed him in the pit of his being that Nehren was a part of this. He didn't know if the boy could take care of himself and seemed just a little to naive and gullible.

He smiled a bit more as Mal coaxed the little monster out from under the cot. In the back of his mind, he wondered if Aeron would be the cause of his lack of sleep in the future because Aeron seemed to have an "opinion" of him. As he watched the flit disappear for food, he almost wished he had one of his own just so he wouldn't have to go to the Kitchen. They really didn't want him there without....supervision He could live without the Klah it was just the food that was harder to come by. He sighed just a little because if he were home, he could have lived of the land. The Weyr unfortunately did not although he bet that the area around the old volcano was rich soil.

"It's a lot better than working with the rest of the candidates. I'd rather be working when no one is around." He paused as his fingers slide through his hair thanking his lucky stars he didn't have lice and the corn rows plus oil had helped after L'thor gave him a quick flight. Lice would have added to the misery and that could have added to his frustration with the Weyr. However, the last question called his attention back to Mal.

"Nah...wasn't born here...I'm from Ruatha Hold from one of the herd farms. Never traveled outside of the farm until the Weyr. I was glad to leave and come here for this dream but...well I am not sure what will happen now. I've got 5 turns until I'm to old for this so it should be enough time to figure out what to do with my future afterwards. I don't really want to go back to being a farmer. I want to see the world." The last lines left him thinking about L'thor's offer to introduce him to the Traders if he didn't impress. He hoped in 5 turns that offer would still stand. He was very uncertain about his future even if he dreamt of many paths that he thought were exciting.

"Where are you from, Mal? You don't seem Weyrborn either." he smiled just a little more as he studied his new roomy. It was really nice just to have a conversation that didn't seem laced with barbs.

“Nehren?” Mal repeated the name as he scratched one cheek in thought. Oh right! The last one to join, the one who had been the most blindsided by these wild accusations. He had nearly gone to tears… or had he? Mal’s memory of the night was a little fuzzy, thanks to the fine wine that was, ultimately, to blame for all of this. He shrugged a little, since it wasn’t much like him to care about those beyond the people he was directly dealing with. “We can always go searching for him. If he’s in trouble, we can intervene and help. And the others too.”

Well, at least the other boys; Firyal was the odd man---haha, woman---out, seeing as she couldn’t exactly share their room. Maybe they could hide her under the bed or something… still, from what Mal could tell, women were less likely to physically attack another girl who was asleep. They preferred emotional tortures, apparently, which was actually a step down from physical beatings.

“Ruatha, huh? Never been there.” He listened with his head tilted to one side, making mental notes about his new roommate. It wasn’t malicious at all or anything; he was simply curious. “Ah well, once you do Impress, you’ll bet that all those other Candidates will be sorry for what they’re doing now. You just wait, my friend. What goes around, comes around, as the saying goes.”

Ah, to tell the truth or not to tell the truth… it was always a question Mal wrestled with. Eventually, he settled for what was probably true. “I was born in Fort Hold,” at least, as near as he could tell. “And then I went off to Harper Hall once I was old enough. Oh! Hey, Aeron! … What do you have there?” And, more importantly, he wondered, why is it still wriggling?

Oh, Aeron had brought food alright! The Bronze firelizard flittered back into the room and landed neatly on Mal’s cot, holding his head high. Clamped between his jaws, he held a wriggling trundlebug, his very favorite prey. He spat it out on the blankets and let out a squawk at Mal before nudging the bug towards him, sending his owner mental feelings of fullness and the taste of food.

"Yeah, Nehren. That's him." he nodded slowly "I'd like to know he's ok at least." He hoped that most people wouldn't look at Nehren the same way they looked at him. Seemed like he had unwittingly crushed a few dreams...no he couldn't blame himself for that Z'nal had done that when he chose to lump them all together.

"It's ok. Ruatha has some good gathers though I have never been to any of them. I usually had to stay with the herd when my parents went and watch my younger brother. The Runners are the big thing at Ruatha. You'll find no better beast than there." He said that with a little pride for his home Hold but his attachment to the place always seemed more of an attachment to the farm than the Hold itself.

"You should so optimistic about impressing. I bet they'd be surprised if I did impress and groan inwardly that they'd have to keep me around." That thought brought a small chuckle to his lips. "But I have no illusions about impressing. With all these candidates, I better not pin hope on a dragon."

"Mmm...Never been to Fort Hold. Although I really haven't been anywhere. What's it like? What was Harper Hall like? L'thor told me I probably can't get into a craft hall after I get done here if I don't impress because I will be too old by then. But I wondered what it would be like to follow that dream. I wasn't ever allowed to go to any Hall but my brother did go, one day he'll be a Master Herder." he said with a smile; at least , someone in his family was making good on their dreams.

It was then, Aeron showed up with...food? Veyes stare became a smile as the flit settled and nudged a trundle bug towards Mal. "Oh boy, I hope you cook that first." He laughed for the first time in a long time. But he wouldn't mention that as a kid his older brother stuff a bug or two in his mouth and made him eat them. Eventually, he did the same thing to his younger brother but instead of forcing him to eat them...he ate one in front of him and told him how yummy they were. Of course, his father wasn't as pleased when he found out, but his little brother's face had left him laughing for days to come.

“Never liked runners much, to be honest.” From Mal’s perspective, they were large ungainly beasts who were just one short leap away from being completely insane. The last thing he wanted to do was entrust his life to a creature who weighed some thousand odd pounds and could ground him to a pulp without an ounce of trouble. Of course, dragons were completely different. They were, as he understood, very much like people. To him, that meant they had to improve some before being able to qualify as ‘insane’. Besides, his thoughts were pretty much the same as Veyes’; he wasn’t going to Impress, not with these odds.

“Ah, now, don’t get all depressed; you stand a decent chance. I mean, there are how many queens now? The first clutch that I stood for here was something like twenty eggs. And there are four queens now, right? So, if we’ve got 20 eggs per clutch, four clutches per year…” he trailed off, mostly because numbers, like writing, were a closed book to him. “Well, it’s a lot of eggs,” he concluded, a little belatedly. “Eighty. That’s a lot. Now me, I’m an inveterate coward.”

Ah, home… he rather still thought of Harper Hall as home, to be honest, despite the fact that he hadn’t really considered going back yet. It would be embarrassing to go back, considering he had disappeared and all that. “Fort Hold was always busy. There was always something for an enterprising young man to do. Full of chaos.” And there was always, always a way for a smart boy to turn chaos to his own advantage.

Pity that Mal hadn’t been that boy. “Do you know E’rik? He’s a Weyrling now, with his dragon, Daramulath. I met E’rik back at Harper Hall back when he was still Ennrik. We were good friends. Always getting each other into trouble ‘cos we could both get away with it. Course, we were both always there to get the other right back out.”

Hmm… Speaking of trouble… Mal got a little idea as he glanced down at the trundlebug. If he had known that Veyes’ brother had once eaten bugs---and had once convinced Veyes himself to join in the fun---he might not have pulled this little trick. He sighed hugely and said to the bronze firelizard, “Alright, Aeron, if you insist…” delicately, he plucked the still wriggling trundlebug from the bedclothes and, to all appearances, looked as if he placed it in his mouth.

Of course, what he really did was a bit of handwork to palm it. And then he chewed. Loudly. And swallowed. “Mm. Delicious. Thank you, Aeron!”

Aeron responded with a pleased noise, content that he had finally managed to get his human to eat. He was a bit suspicious, since Mal had never eaten the offerings before, but, perhaps, his human was just a bit stupid. He certainly seemed pleased enough, which was enough for the flitt.
