I'm getting ahold of a pair of welding goggles and a welder's mask. I don't know which I want to modify.

Have you seen the movie Coraline? Try modding the welder's mask into something like that tech kid's mask. have a rotating lens be polarized, have a monocular, have a small macro lens. Go hog wild.

I have to say I agree with everyone else, do both! But for practicality's sake, I'd suggest going all-out on the welder's mask since it's got more surface area for modification, and keep the goggles simple in case you want to wear them around -- you wouldn't want overly ornate and fragile goggles on your head while you're out and about during the day.
