Normally, Shade didn't mind doing groceries - he liked knowing that he could be of some help to his mother. She worked hard to provide for them after all and he didn't want her to worry about all the little things that needed to be done around the house. However, it tended to be somewhat stressful when he had a science project to get done, as well as an English essay. That's what he got for putting it off though - the essay HAD been assigned about 2 months ago.
He glanced upwards briefly, somewhat hoping that the clouds above his head would clear up. He didn't really like being outside often, but he also didn't want it to start raining on him - he hated water with a passion. It was only good for drinking and showering, as far as he was concerned. They didn't LOOK like rain clouds, but he was still somewhat paranoid about it. Deciding that it'd be best if he returned home quickly, he quickened his pace - the grocery bags were starting to get heavy anyway.

Verdant absentmindedly twirled his black lace parasol as he walked towards the grocery store a few blocks from his apartment. Though the clouds obscured a bit of sunlight, he couldn't just let his ghostly pallor disappear with exposure to the sun. In moderation, sunlight was good for him and it gave him lots of nutrients, but the sun had been scorchingly hot lately and he'd begun to wilt a little; his hair was starting to blanch, his scent was musky, and his skin was tanning really badly. The cloudy weather was certainly a reprieve.
He was halfway to the store when he bumped into something or someone covered in fur. He fell to the ground and swore loudly when he heard a tear. He looked down and saw that he had torn his black jeans.
"At least the tear isn't on my butt," he muttered, frustrated by the fact that he'd barely bought these jeans a week ago. "Hey, you alright? Sorry about bumping in to you!"

A surprised yelp escaped Shade's throat as he smacked into someone and he fell back, landing on his rear. He'd managed to keep hold of one of his bags, but the second one had fallen from his hands, its contents scattered across the sidewalk. The impling blinked at the person he'd bumped into and scatched the back of his head sheepishly.
"I'm okay. Sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going." He looked to the bag he'd dropped and silently thanked some higher power that the eggs hadn't been in that particular bag. He set down the unspilled bag and moved to pick his items up again. "Are you okay?" He looked back to the guy he'd run into, hoping he hadn't hurt him - he seemed alright at first glance.

"Oh, I'm fine! I'm pretty tough, despite my effeminacy." Verdant laughed, his voice sounding damn masculine for someone with "effeminacy". He helped the furry boy collect the groceries that had spilled out of one of the bags and smiled. "Say, I hope you don't mind my asking, but are you an imp? I'm just asking out of curiosity, is all." Verdant held up his hands nervously; he certainly didn't want to be pegged for a racist, especially when he'd barely found out what that was a year ago.

Shade gave the older guy a grateful look as he came over to help with the scattered groceries. His golden eyes blinked from behind messy black bangs at the question about his race and nodded to black-haired young man. He knew races like his weren't common, but he'd never been questioned about it. "Yeah, that's right." He tilted his head at young man, looking somewhat curious himself. "You've never seen one before?" Not that it would be surprising if the guy hadn't - the impling boy had never seen another of his kind before, save for his mother of course.

"No, I've never seen an imp before. They aren't exactly a common race; I've actually only read about them in books." Verdant felt a bit of comraderie with the boy; being an amaranth nereid, the highest order of nymphs, he wasn't commonplace either. He'd yet to meet another nymph, let alone a nereid, so he was pretty unique.
Verdant stopped pondering his "uniqueness" when he saw that the boy was struggling a bit under the weight of the groceries.
"Hey, you need a helping hand there?"

Shade glanced over towards the young man as he offered to help him carry the groceries. He contemplated it for a moment - should he accept help from someone he'd just met and who was clearly older than him? He got his answer when he nearly lost his grip on the grocery bag again.
"Y...Yeah. I'd appreciate it." He gave the older guy a small smile, looking somewhat embarrassed as he did. The man seemed nice, so why not accept his help? "Thanks a bunch."

Verdant carried the heaviest bag in his left arm while carrying his parasol in his right. The sun was starting to shine a little stronger as the clouds fled from his sights. The nymph let out a bit of a groan, but paid the sun no mind. If it wanted to scorch his skin, then so be it. He wondered how the imp boy must be feeling; he was covered in fur, black fur actually. He'd be sweating bullets if the weather got any warmer.
"Oh, hey, I'm Verdant." He placed the parasol handle in his mouth and extended his hand to the imp. "If noff foo meech choo!" he said around the handle.

Shade reached up to move his bangs out of his face, suddenly glad that he wasn't wearing a sweater. Now that the sun was coming out, he could already feel himself starting to grow hot. Having black fur was such a pain - why couldn't he have been born with a lighter color? He supposed that he shouldn't complain though. He'd rather have it be sunny and hot than rainy and wet.
The impling glanced to the young man - Verdant as he'd introduced himself as - and blinked at the hand being extended towards him. He grinned a little as the older guy tried to speak around the parasol in his mouth before shifting the bag he held in order to take hold of the hand. "I'm Shade...and likewise." This guy seemed kind of cool.

"Thay? Thath uh koo nem," Verdant mumbled before pulling the parasol out of his hand and repeating himself. "Shade? That's a cool name!" He adjusted the parasol so that not a bit of sunlight was on him, then noticed that Shade was looking a little hot. He switched the bag with his parasol and thus provided both of them relief from the sun's rays.
"Man, this weather is terrible. Look at my hair! I'm starting to blanch really badly." This was very true; his ivory black hair was starting to look platinum blonde at the tips and around his scalp. It didn't look very healthy, as if his hair was wilting. "I blame global warming!"
He looked over at Shade, who seemed to be doing a little better now that the sun wasn't beating down on his fur.

Shade had to stifle a laugh as Verdant tried to talk around the parasol in his mouth before he smiled at the young man's compliment. "Thanks." He suddenly found himself being sheltered under the shadow that Verdant's parasol provided - it was much nicer than having to walk with the sun beating down on him.
He looked up at Verdant as he mentioned his hair blanching from the heat. He had to admit, the weather HAD been rather bad lately, heat-wise. He may have hated water, but maybe rain would help with the unbearable temperatures. "Yeah, it's been pretty bad...we could use a rain storm or something." He wrinkled his nose somewhat at the idea of a storm - just because he was willing to admit that they needed it didn't mean that he liked it. "Or maybe just a really cloudy day..."
His tail flicked back and forth as he wracked his brain for conversation ideas. He only had a few friends that he really ever hung out with, and even then, he still didn't talk much. The teen made a mental note to get some better social skills. "So...do you live around here...?"

"A cloudy day would be a blessing, but it's not likely. The sun keeps scaring the clouds away." Verdant childishly stuck his tongue out at the sky in defiance. "Oh, what? Yeah, I live a block down from the grocery store. It's this dull grey apartment; it's easy to miss."
His memeory flicked back to the day before, when the heat was truly unbearable. The landlady had told everyone in the apartment complex to go to the roof and hop into a huge pool that seemed to have popped up out of nowhere. Verdant brought out all his parasols and the college guys next door had taped them onto the pool for shade. After that, everyone enjoyed themselves. Even Mr. Andersen, the old codger who thought Verdant was a woman, was in the pool, though he kept pinching his butt every opportunity he got.
"Do you live nearby, Shade? I should think it tedious for you to carry such heavy groceries if you live far away."

Shade chuckled a bit at Verdant; unfortunately, he doubted that making faces at the sky would make the sun go away. It would be nice if that worked though.
He thought for a moment as Verdant described the apartment building he lived in - it did sound pretty easy to miss, mostly because there were a lot of buildings by that description. He lived pretty close though, which was probably made getting groceries easier for the young man. His own home didn't really stand out too much either.
"Our apartment's about two blocks away." he explained as the two of them crossed the street. "The building's a brick one." It was a nice enough place; he'd lived in the little apartment with his mother for about 7 years now. It wasn't fancy or anything, but it was home to the teenager.

"Oh, that's not too far," Verdant quipped as he tried not to trip on the curb. Despite the elegance of his clothing, he himself was a bit of a klutz. The last thing he needed was to fall again and tear more than just his jeans. "That really should make things easier for you when you go grocery shopping, huh? I sometimes have to have my neighbors come help me with my groceries; frat boys make great pack mules." Verdant giggled as he remembered the last time they'd accompanied him to the store; Verdant had to buy them some girlie mags just to get them to stop complaining and just carry the fourteen bags of fruits, vegetables, cottage cheese, coconut shavings, raisins, and corn syrup that he was going to use to make a giant fruit salad, which they had aptly named the The Big Fruit.
"Oh, so do you go to school around here or are you home-schooled?" It was the first thing to pop into Verdant's mind in regards to keeping the conversation alive.
