.: Baby Q&A:.

- Welcome -

Hello. First off let me thank Nikolita for allowing me to do this. You may wonder why I wanted to do it in the first place. Well, I've known a lot of young mothers through out my life. Many of these young moms were afraid to ask for their parents help. Some girls get the 'this is why you shouldn't have had sex' or some other speech every time they ask for help on how to warm a bottle.

- My Experience -

So, you are probably also wondering; what makes me so full of advise? Well, I am not exactly a young mother myself but I can tell you a few things about myself. I nannied for 12 hours a day (Sometimes more) a new born for the first year of her life. One of my friends had her first child at sixteen and I practically helped her with everything, because her mother taught her nothing. I've been doing long hour babysitting since I was fourteen. (I am twenty.) I have taken a few classes on child development. My little brother was born when I was ten and ever sense then, I've been looking up things about babies; Just because I wanted to learn more.

I should be able to give answers to most questions. If not, I have a mother who answers just about everything and there is also the internet. I love looking up new things. xd I am strange. Guild members are welcome to help as well!

-How it works-

You ask a question in the thread (if it isn't already answered). I give the best explanation I can. I've already set up a few questions with answers, so please browse through there first.

.: Questions With Answers:.

Questions are in Dark Blue.
Answers are in Black.

1. What are the different types of diapers?
There are two main types of diapers. The first type is cloth diapers that are made out of special material. Cloth diapers are re-usable AFTER being washed and it's said you can save money by using them the correct way. The second is what we would call a regular diaper, which are made out of plastics and are lined with cotton (sometimes.) These are also refered to as throw-aways.

2. How do I change a diaper?
Diapers are not as hard to change as many people think (even with a wiggly baby.) Many doctors actually recomend that you clean your baby's bum even if they didn't do number two. It is also very important to make sure the brand of diapers you are using lets your baby's bum breath (I could get into that later). Most people also don't know that you clean boys' and girls' bums differntly. Because girl's have other areas that infection can get to you must wipe their bums down. This helps keep away number two from getting in/on their private openings. Males can be wiped in an up direction.

For those who have never actually worked with diapers.
User ImageAfter you wipe the baby's bum, and he/she has a CLEAN bum, you can now put the new diaper under them. Be sure to place their behind in the center of the diaper (half up from the front.) And also make sure you aren't using the outside of the diaper (I've seen it done.) Pull the front up over the baby's belly, and then pull the tape sides around to the front. The diaper is too tight if you cannot fit at least two fingers flat against your child.

1. Tape-like squares that secure to the front of the diaper.
2. Where the baby's bum should go.
3. Elastic on side to help hold in 'stuff' and fits nicely around baby's thighs.
4. The front of the diaper. (Usually has some sort of cute design.)

Before birth, it's fun to practice on babydolls.

3. How do I change a cloth diaper?
Please understand that you cannot use just any cloth, you must by specially made cloth diapers, liners and protectors. It seems like a lot, but in the long run it comes out to be a lot cheaper and safer on the enviroment.

Because there is more than one way to fold a cloth diaper. I think it's best for readers to view a site that can explain it better than I can. I'd actually have to show you how to do it. Please go to the Diaper Folding Site (Sorry for the extra hassle.)

What to do with the Cloth Diaper when Dealing with a bowel Movement or Number.

If it is a hard pieces or one hard piece then just shake it out into the toilet and then drop the then shake the BM off into toilet and drop the cloth diaper into a diaper pail. If it's soft then shake off and the using toilet paper wipe off any excess into the toilet and drop the diaper into the daiper pail.

If it is a situation where you feel you need to call for back-up simply Shake off into toilet and hold on tightly to a corner of the diaper and flush toilet. Be sure to hold it tightly though or you will lose a diaper and it will clog your toilet. Let it soak in the toilet for a while or run a bucket of cold water and let it soak in the bucket. When you feels it's soaked long enough, place it into the diaper pail.

4. What is the best way to warm a bottle?
There are three main ways to warm a bottle. Using the stove, the microwave and the kitchen sink. The stove involves putting the bottle inside a pan of water that is being slowly warmed. You can also put a tea kettle on the stove and heat the water on low and then pour it into the bottle. The microwave involves putting the bottle in with just the water and without the n****e for maybe 20 seconds. The last way involves placing the bottle inside a bowl that is in the sink and then running hot water into the bowl for a few minutes.

USE THE TEST RULE. IF the formula feels too hot for your wrist, it is TOO HOT for baby.
Please also note that breast milk SHOULD NOT be microwaved. Microwaves can destroy most of the nutriants in the breast milk. If you pump for later, it'd probably be best to heat it in the sink. (I'll do some research on breast milk.)

Using the Microwave CAN BE dangerous. Microwaves do not heat things evenly, you can tell that just by cooking a frozen burrito and still finding cold parts. This can cause you to think that the bottle is just fine, but there can be hotter spots in the formula. It's important to shake the bottle and even let it set for a few seconds. I don't recomend using the microwave.

I actually find that using the stove is alot better for normal plastic bottles. The Kitchen sink method is good for bottles that use bags to hold the formula. DO NOT use the stove method on a bottle that uses plastic bags!

5. How should I lay the baby to feed him/her?
It's actually important to hold your baby while you feed him/her. While you feed your baby he/she is usually looking up at you. It's sort of like imprinting and creating a bond.

Believe it or not there is actually more than one way that you can hold your baby while you feed him/her. (Depending on if you are breast feeding or bottle feeding.) This is something that I find difficult to explain with out actually showing you. (Expecially breat-feeding positions.) Here is a great link that explains a few postitions for breast-feeding. How often should I feed him/her? Should I steralize the Foruma Water?

6. How do you burp a baby?
I know of two ways to burp a baby. One involves holding them close to you and another involves laying them on their stomachs with their head to the side. Make sure you place a towel under his/her head. Babies sometimes spit up while you are trying to burp them. Lay him/her down on his/her stomach or against you and pat their back. (Don't pat too hard.) It really is as simple as that.

It's important to burp your baby, because the extra gasses in his/her stomach can cause a stomach ache.

Question that I didn't see adressed in above posts:

I know that breast-feeding is healthier for the baby than feeding it formula-

But I was told that if you formula-feed your baby, then it starts eating soft foods sooner than breast-fed. Unfortunately, the doctor I asked never answered my question as to when exactly you can start feeding them "baby food". sad

I've already looked online, and havent found anything really concrete on the subject...Is it just different for each baby? or am I just looking in the wrong places?

*Edit: If this information is in the links posted in your first post, I'm sorry, my web browser would only open two of them.*
