I have many a garden beds now. Today I started working the front one. It's a very big change from my small four boxed town home one. As well, I'm working with a mature garden that's budding - normally I would buy the plant as an "adult" so I'd have some idea of what it'd look like. I have no idea what is weed and what is not.

If you have any suggestions for plants, tips, and other stuff, please let me know. I'm in USDA Zone 4. :3

What the front flower bed looks like. Gets plenty of sun.

Seeds I got from Whole Foods. I scattered these around and hopefully I'll have some butterflies show up:

Congratulations, Pirhan! New houses are fun!

Okay----

mystery plant #1 looks like sedum--mine blooms in the late summer/fall

your bug looks like what we call "June Bugs," known to bruise motorcyclists on hot summer nights----that's a grownup grub worm!

mystery plant #2 looks like a lily of some kind to me

Can you hear the frogs singing there?

I concur - that one mystery plant is a sedum. I got some with my new house five years ago. The dog dug one of them up at an inappropriate time of year for transplanting, we stuck it back down somewhere else out of her reach (bunnies were trying to burrow in the area), and it has been just fine ever since! Very hardy. Mine all have reddish flowers.

(sigh) I had a nice long post typed out and guess what Walter, my laptop did? KILLED SAFARI.

That's what.

Anyways.

Sorry I've been totally lame. I've been pretty reclusive on the forums and with my garden. Nothing like piling everything in at once and getting it done.

I have been having an ongoing battle with red lily beetles.

First I thought they were cute little beetles. Until my lilies went from this to this by this. I've unfortunately I have been forced to start drowning them in soapy water. As they are an introduced pest, they have no natural predators. I have been using insecticidal soap but it's been pretty wet. And, in my opinion drowning > having your outer shell eaten away. Regardless, fear has been struck into their hearts.

I also found out how dumb I am today. When we first moved in, I planted a bunch of seeds from my butterfly garden packet. I though I had failed because I didn't see anything new come in where I thought I had planted them. Anyways, my other half has been ragging on me to pull out the "weeds" in the front bed. I've held off because I like them and I'm glad I did. I found out that from the packet I have:
borage
cornflower blue (I'm doing a seed trade on it as there are other nutters that like "weeds" too)
black eyed susan

I also have some pretty mothers wort in the back.

Oh, and I've had family over for the last little bit. Apparently this looks a lot like this. confused
