I just started chaining. I'm trying to get a shiny swablu. I can only get up to 20 and then the chain breaks. I need some tips so i can past 20.
Edit - Thanks everyone i just chained ralts and caught a female one. I'm so happy!! blaugh

Only tip I can give is to bring an Syncronize Abra with the Nature you want on Swablu. So when you get the shiny. It's actully usefull.

I got this advice from darkshiek ze spiffy ninja:
Never walk directly up while chaining.
Never go to a piece of grass thats within 3 boxes of grass
ALWAYS carry a ton of max repels
After you get to 40, STOP walking into patches of grass that are not sparkling. keep recharging and checking which pieces of grass are moving until you see one sparkle.

I can add 3 more tips. Stay away from corners in the fourth ring. Corners make it easier to end the chain. (you would be the X and the numbers are the rings)

Stay away from the edge of the grass. For the same reason as above.
Always use the same type of shaking patches. (and Shiny ones of course)
Now these tips I'm about to say I don't know if they are any good, I've yet to prove them right or wrong.
The Red 4s in the rings may end the chain. (I've yet to have this happen)
And the farthest patch is more likely to continue the chain. (I don't have a way to prove this)

Another thing, make sure you can see all the patches of grass when you're going into one.

For the longest time I avoided going into the patches of grass that are 4 spaces up, left, right, and down from you. But when I do go into them they dont do anything.
Maybe its all luck on my part but yeah...

I'd recommend using super repels. Sure they don't last as long, but you get more of them for the same amount of money than you would with max repels which means the more steps you can take.
Example:
5000 pokedollars = 10 super repels = 2000 steps
However:
5000 pokedollars = 7 max repels = 1785 steps
This is for chainers who are on a budget. Having a strong Meowth with payday comes in handy too.

I'e never caught a shiny by chaining... I have caught one with pure, sweet luck though in Eterna Forest when I started playing Platinum... It was a golden Silcoon... I would have liked it to been something else, but hey, it was my first shiny, and without chaining or expecting it ^_^

Ya'll lucky. I can't even find one. I haven't been able to chain past 9 yet. The only shint that I ever had was in Gold and Silver but that doen't count since they are part of the story.

Out of all the pokemon i could get shiny, I got a Shiny Wurmple and that's it.
