The Tawdry Roadhogs were not a group who normally associated themselves with bongo-like instruments, but Astan liked to think his percussionary interests extended beyond smashing a drum kit in his epilepsy-inducing garage band. At the moment, however, he was wishing they hadn't needed to extend as far as all this. The music shop that had been recommended to him was on one of the many edges of Vargash, close enough to the wastelands to make the man the tiniest bit twitchy. Astan was city born and bred, and while he wasn't technically afraid of wide open spaces or sun-bleached abandoned buildings, they weren't listed among his favorite hangouts either.
Astan hefted his newly purchased talking drum higher in his arms, then shifted it up to a shoulder as he continued walking. Thankfully it wasn't a very hot day, so the distance he had to walk back to his apartment wasn't likely to be terribly uncomfortable.

Kell padded along the sidewalk in front of Eli a small squirming lizard trapped in his jaws. While the small prey creature had been captured the hound dog seemed to have no intention of eating it anytime soon or letting it go.
Eli sighed softly but allowed this anyways, Kell had found the thing trying to scale the wall of a nearby building and had plucked the unfortunate creature off with ease. The man knew he'd get around to eating it eventually or possibly let it go if he got bored, as it was the creature seemed more generally trapped then impaled on the dog's teeth so it wasn't as if it were in pain.

Across the street, Astan spotted the hound and his master and removed one hand from the side of his drum to give them a wave. Seeing that they were the only two beings around, he didn't see the harm in introducing himself, not thinking about the fact that his actions might have seemed a bit pushy. All publicity was good publicity, after all.

Eli waved back and would have left it at that if Kell hadn't darted across the road to see the stranger, tail wagging furiously as he pranced and whined for attention , lizard still firmly clasped in his jaws. Shaking his head Eli followed and wondered what had gotten into Kell. Perhaps the man was carrying or wearing something that smelled highly attractive.. or the old dog was hitting senility or something.

The first thing Astan noticed when the dog got closer was that he had a lizard trapped between his teeth. Not a toy, nor just a bitten and dead thing, but a real, living lizard. "Did you catch that yourself, boy?" Astan asked the dog, setting down his drum and bending over to watch the tiny animal wiggle and squirm.

Kell gave a soft wuff which caused the lizard to squirm a bit more frantically from the vibrations. For his own part Kell seemed highly amused by his prey's efforts to escape.
I"m not sure sure catch is appropriate" Eli drawled as he caught up with the pair. The green eyed man shot the other male a friendly laidback smile as he spoke.

"Oh, well, uh, don't they... skitter?" Astan asked, running the first two fingers of his right hand over his left palm like a little running man. "I dunno really, everyone in my building has these tiny dogs like they're tryin' to act all rich and I haven't spent a lot of time around reptiles, though a snake would be awesome..." He trailed off, chuckling to himself before offering a hand to shake. "I'm Astan." The other hand extended down toward Kell's head in an obvious pre-pet gesture. "Can I?"

Eli nodded swiftly" Yeah Kell's a good old boy and enjoys being pet" Not to mention the dog would have to let go of his prize first and he seemed quite happy to hold on and coat the poor thing in saliva. " Also tiny dogs don't count as dogs I'm half convinces they're all halfbreeds with rats or something" The redhead wasn't normally biased but he did hold a certain amount of disdain for froufrou pets. Kell was his best friend and sometimes his only companion but the hound was also a working dog, not some luxury pooch carted around in a tote bag they didn't know what to do with itself. " I'm Eli" he said after a moment realizing Astan has introduced himself but he hadn't.
While the men talked Kell looked up at Astan with soulful brown eyes begging for a pet. A mighty hunter he might be at times but when the hunts were over the dog was still mans best friend.. in return for affection anyways.

Astan smiled, both at Eli's reaction to toy dogs and the fact that he had been given permission to pet Kell. He sank to a kneel and began to scratch the old dog's head. "Yeah, I mean it's not their faults or anything, I just feel like I'm going to break 'em. I'd love a dog, but I think the only kind that would fit in my place are tiny ones." The truth was, Astan would have taken any pet he could get his hands on, but he had only ever had fish before and they had all mysteriously died within weeks of purchase. Rather than make inadvertent animal murder a hobby, he had chosen to remain petless.
"So, what are you guys up to today?" He might have sounded like he planned to tag along, but really Astan was just curious.

" Grocery store" Eli answered " Sadly man cannot live on bread alone and I actually need to buy food." The auburn haired man wasn't much a fan of shopping even for the essentials but he couldn't exactly afford to have them delivered to his door like some people.
Kell's tail wagged faster at the touch and the dog released his saliva coated prey so he could try and lick the man's face in thanks.

"Ah," Astan replied. "How true. I was out picking up this--" he began, his voice cutting off as he was licked. Well, that was... wet, but not entirely unexpected. The young man smiled, then laughed, his chuckles more rumbly than hysterical. "You lost your lizard, Kell," he said as he continued petting the dog.

Eli chucked himself as he watched Kell slobber a little on Astan, it was good to see the dog interacting with someone outside himself and his family. Ok so dogs weren't kids and they didn't need friends , plus it was his fault Kell didn't see people much but still it was good to see Kell happy and not totally hunt focused. sometimes Eli worried he'd taken the normal dog out of Kell at least until he saw something like this. " I think that lizards thinks you're it's personal saviour." The poor thing was now crawling away as fast as it could. " What were you saying before , you got licked?" Being cut off the other man hadn't been able to explain why he himself was out.

"Oh, yeah," Astan said. "A friend recommended a place to get instruments out here, so I picked this up." He indicated the large drum which was now several feet away. "Branching out, ya know? I've wanted to play something without sticks for a while now. Like, officially. Do you guys hang out around here a lot?" He meant 'near the Wasteland,' but wasn't about to say so. It would be weird to talk about his insecurities around a perfect stranger.

Eli nodded as the other talked, so he was drummer of some sort? Vaguely the auburn haired man wondered if the skin on the drum he held was from an animal he'd killed. " We go a bit of everywhere but mostly we're out there" he pointed off towards the wastelands" Hunting"
At the magical H word Kell looked over at Eli expectantly, where they going? Was there going to be a chase?

"Ah." Astan absently pat at Kell's head several more times before brushing his palms on his jeans and rising to his feet. "Is that fun? Lots to do out there?" He pushed silly thoughts of crazy wasteland attack-hobos out of his head and grinned, genuinely interested in Eli's answer. "Have you ever been to another city?"
