Countless years ago, a beautiful Goddess created the world. Her name was Incaridia. Some say she did so out of boredom, while others claim it was her punishment for committing some despicable act among the Gods. In every version, though, one thing remains the same: Incaridia created the world: Arret.
When Arret was created, so were the many races. Humans, elves, dwarves, aven, merfolk, centaur, and the infinite others where plucked into existence by Incaridia. Along with the races of the world, animals and creatures were construed by the Goddess, as well as the dark denizens. Monsters, as they are normally referred by, are a commonplace in Arret, but society has seemed to found ways to survive while battling these beasts who seem to try destroy all that it stands for.
One of the greatest races created by the Goddess at this time was the Eternals. Beings of great power, Incaridia is said to have assigned the governing and management of the various elements to them. There is one Eternal for each element: fire, wind, water, soil, metal, nature, time, space, electricity, and sound. The Eternals are what their name states; they are eternal beings, who know not the the woes of time and have been forever immortal. Some lores say, however, that the Eternal's will one day die, although it is never stated when or how.
These great beings have been present through the long history of Arret since it's beginning, and have made their existence known to the various societies on a number of occasions. The Eternals are known to be both a great help to society as well as a devilish source of destruction. Many civilizations have fallen beneath the power of these great creatures, while others have risen from nothing to become great powers thanks to the Eternals. Their place and purpose on Arret is still questioned.
The races of Arret have gone through many political struggles throughout the years. Many have banded together at certain points in time only to find themselves fighting each other years later. There have been a number of great wars, with each race taking their fair share of losses and gains, but in the end, all of the traditional goodly races have seemed to band together, if only tentatively. Most races that have some sort of structure to them beyond the tribal setting are viewed as civilized and are recognized by all other races as a non threat unless there is an outstanding war between two of them.
In the current day and age, though, most of the goodly races have banded together towards one common purpose: survival and the betterment of society. Urban areas that closely resemble cities have developed around the kingdoms of old, and many of the races can be found living together in these environments. Strides in magic and technology have come as of late. Those that know how to harness the powers of the arcane has dwindled somewhat, but those who do know how to wield the powerful art have made great breakthroughs in the field. Engineering has become a popular profession of sorts, and the steam engine has made its way into society, bringing along with it the gun and rifle, although in their very basic forms. Many still prefer the use of a sword.
Religion has come in to the people of Arret in many forms as of late. In the days of old, it was said that the great Goddess Incaridia herself would make appearances to her people, and great acts of her power through the people of the races that worshiped her were almost commonplace. Many people have turned towards other religions, while even a greater number has turned away from religion altogether with the recent strides in science and technology. Still, though, there are worshipers of the Goddess, and her priests still seem to be able to call forth to her once in awhile to invoke her powers.
With this decay in religion, another major belief has grown within the hearts of all the major races: It is time they take control of world, and break free from the bonds that hold them back; Those being the monsters that haunt their dreams and the world outside the major developments, and the awesome power of the Eternals. Groups of warriors have claimed that they will hunt down and kill the Eternals, thus ending their destructive tendencies once and for all. All the while, the religious groups that still believe in Incaridia have spoke out against these movements.
"It is up to the people to decide where they stand in this matter, and what they will do during these trying times in our history," said Prime Minister Jonathan Howl of the Humans and the rest of the representatives at the last great Meeting of the Races all agreed. And so, every man, woman, and child of all races must choose what they will become and how they will live in the current world of Arret.
