I don't know if this is posted elsewhere, but I just want to get a confirmation of the meaning of Suikoden. I heard that it meant Water Margin. For anyone who knows, do you know what Suikoden means? I also heard and can obviously see by how the games are like, that it revolves around the story of the 108 stars of destiny too.
I would just like to get a more in-depth info about Suikoden for anyone who knows anything and everything they can tell me about it. Don't explain the games though, I already know everything about the games.

Actually... We kind of talked about that in the "Suikoden: How is it Pronounced?" thread, but it's not the place you'd expect to look... sweatdrop
Let's see.... In Japanese, "Gensou" means "illusion", and "Suikoden" means "the Water Margin." Put them together, and you get "Illusion of the Water Margin." In Chinese it's also translated as "All Men Are Brothers," but don't ask me why since I can't actually read Chinese... sweatdrop
There was one animated movie called Suikoden Demon Century, I think? It's not related to the games, though. There were also two Chinese movies called All Men Are Brothers. Those are based on the actual text, and you can probably find them on bootlegged VCDs... They mention gathering 108 warriors to overthrow the magistrate, but only concentrate on about 5 or 7 main characters.
Hmm... I think that's it... Unless I've forgotten something... Oh yeah...! You could also check out Suikosource if you haven't already. They have a list of the original 108 stars from the Water Margin in the characters section.

Alright. Thank you very much. So it was right then, and I think I did check that site a bit before but not really a lot. Well it's good they finally made Suikoden 4 mostly with water so it has to do with perhaps water margin. I just love the Suikoden stories though and all the games the main character ends up being claimed a traitor to his people when really it was never necessary their fault.
I'm just playing my way through Suikoden 4 right now since I got it when it first came out last week. Yeah, I think I seen the movie Suikoden one time in blockbuster, but never rented it or anything. I should check back there and maybe try to get it if I can and watch it. That's if they still have it.

The fact that Suikoden 4 is played out on water actually has nothing to do with Sui Hu Zhuan, IMO, as Sui Hu Zhuan just refers to the fortress that's situated near the marsh, if I recall correctly from what I've read in a book. In fact, the only part of Suiko that was taken from the Chinese novel was the one about forming a new government- there is no True Runes in the novel itself, I assure you. Chinese folklore it may be, but legend it is not. domokun

After playing the first game in the series, I sought out the books and read them in a three volume set called Outlaws of the Marsh. The version I have is by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong, translated by Sidney Shapiro ISBN 7-119-01662-8
The books were a real page-turner, because at the end of almost chapter, it would say something like, "And what happened to so-and-so? Read our next chapter if you would know." Over and over.
There were some occasional supernatural elements. I must say that I could not like the characters in the book. The protagonists are often murderous and act cold-blooded and calculating occasionally, such as engineering the murder of a child, just to force the person looking after the child to become an outlaw and join them.
Let me find a random chapter's ending to quote. "What was the demand which Zhu Tong made? Read our next chapter if you would know."

the version i read was called "outlaws of the marsh". i found it in my high school library. there have been many other translations. it's kind of hard to say which one is right. depends on the translator i guess.

It's probably different in both Chinese and Japanese. Father found a couple of VCDs called "All Men are Brothers" which is supposedly based off the original story...
