By some fun happenstance, I've constructed a permanent temple-like area, right in my front yard! It's underneath a rather large pine tree, just a simple circle thats been swept and lined with stones and sticks. The branches will son have Tibetan prayer flags strung between them, and lanterns hang from safe branches and a few shepherd hooks. All in all, its a great space.
There is a reason I chose it however, the tree was always a place a played under when I was little. It was where I chilled when I was 12 and just found out about the craft, and as I progressed, some of my most powerful workings were performed under its branches. For some reason, I've been drawn to "Windy" (thats the name I have for him. He doesnt seem to mind), and when the idea to make a "Wayward Pine"* for my boyfriend came up, I knew it would mostly serve as a haven for me to make magick in xp
Those of you lucky enough to be able to create such a space, I highly recommend it. Dont get me wrong, spells and the like performed in the kitchen or out in the wild are just as effective. In fact, I still use my kitchen more so than the place I just built. Still, within that stone circle, I am able to take my focus off of the mundane. Less focus on the mundane, of course, means more focus on whatever it is you are doing.
Sacred spaces kind of go along the same as Altars, where you can work/worship that is more permanent than your typical circle. Sacred spaces are usually imbibed with spells or other things to keep the place protected and well...special. They can pretty much be made anywhere, but I suggest outside, obviously xd .
Here are some tips/ideas that might help you in making one (if you can)
-Keep it somewhat large. Big enough to fit you and your supplies is fine but I've found th emore room to work in, the more comfortable I am (and the less I trip over things)
-Keep it safe. If by some chance you decide to make a space under a tree with low branches, make sure they are up and out of the way enough that if you were to light a fire, nothing would catch. I cleared away dead/low branches when I made mine because I knew I would be burning things underneath it. It's also good to consider fireproofing the area around it.
-Make sure its not too high of a traffic area. I know that my mum will -never- sit under that damn tree (solely because shes deathly afraid of spiders), but had my old neighbors been living here still with their kids, I would have built it elsewhere. You dont want too many people traipsing around your area, spouting off whatever vibes they might have. On the flip side however, I've noticed that where children play often has excellent residual energy that is often has a happy feeling to it. Its really up to you.
-Runes! I still use runes (though not for divination...it just didnt click with me), and they're all over the damn place in my garden and bedroom. Hidden under rocks or carved in secret places, runes have always lended their own powers to whatever I'm doin'. Despite its unfortunate neo-nazi associations, I still draw Algiz where protection is needed, or Beorc where I hold esbats.
-Make it pretty! Add in handmade stepping stones, or hang decorative ornaments. Make it your own! I might take down the mirror mobile I hung up, I think it may be scaring off the birds, but they've been coming around lately so perhaps not...Anyway, if conventional decorating isnt an option, try using nature! Gather up some pine cones, or make one of those sweet stone stack-y things.
I hope, if you can, you might find a place thats seeping with specialness for you. Good luck! whee
*A Wayward Pine, for those of you who are not familiar with the Sowrd of Truth book series, or the Legend of the Seeker shows, is a pine tree that is habitable. The branches are thick enough to keep most water out, and high enough that a decent fire can be built underneath. The Sword of Truth series is my boyfriends favorite, and like the awesome girlfriend I am, I started reading it and found out about the lovely little pine trees. I surprised him with it (and he me, as he had bought me a cactus randomly), and yes, he very much got a kick out of it.

I had a sacred space, but it's overtaken by stuff now. It was in my attic room, facing a shelf to the north where I put a driftwood sculpture and fairy figures all around it. A lot of my tools, Pagan books, and supplies are still up there, but my altar's been disassembled, and there really isn't any room now to clear the space.
I want to add to the part about creating sacred space, if that's ok.
*It's good to smudge the space once in awhile to clear the energies, a sage stick/bundle is a good way to.
*Also, "sweep" the area around your space with your besom, if you have one - imagine the negative energy as evil dust bunnies, and you're sweeping them out of the space.
*Make sure you have a chance to have some quiet time - don't let the telephone or doorbell disturb you (have your answering machine on, or take the phone off the hook, and don't answer the door when someone rings the doorbell or knocks on it). This way you can have your quiet time.
There was something I read a few years back on cleansing sacred spaces, for indoors. It said to wash the walls and floors and basically to keep it pristine, but I think you don't have to go to that extreme. Just when you're in your space, clear the negativity out, and cleanse it with positive energy.
