Since I didn't see a topic for this, though admittedly I didn't do a thorough search...

A rather difficult (at least for me) style of bellydance. I know that I have a lot more trouble with this, and anything requiring jerky motions, than anything else. So I guess...does anyone have any tips or tricks for mastering the jerky motions? Secrets you'd like to share? That sort of thing.

I do believe the "jerky motions" you're referring to is called "Break-Beat".

It can be a little tricky at first. My tip is if you want to use this, you first need to find music with break beat in it. Beats Antique's new album "Collide" has it in pretty much every track. (And it ROOOOOOOOOOCKS omg I'm not disappointed in the album at all.)

Anywho...You need to famillarize yourself with the music. It's very hard to know when to break-beat if you dont know when it's comming.

Next, think of a move you want to to. Snake-arms are VERY popular for this.

Break down the move into however many beats there are to break. Usualy it's 2 or 3 breaks in the rythem.

So if you were doin a snake-arm with your right arm with 3 breaks in the rythem...you'd stop at your hip, ribs, then between your shoulder and head before completeting the move.

I really wish I had a web cam so I could SHOW you.

Ok, so i do want to say that there are two different styles of ATS...One is the more standard tribal, that is SOLELY improv.

The one with the jerkyness, that is more Tribal Fusion.

How i know, i took an ATS class and a fusion class.

ATS is fluid, with cue's and more slow in tempo. your best bet is to try a dvd from Fat Chance Belly Dance. (fcbd.com)

Tribal Fusion is choreographed and is pretty much the groundness of ATS fused with usually a more 'hip hop' movements.

Nadeu is correct, KNOW your music. It is very important. Esp if your doing Improv

The only tip i can advise DRILL DRILL DRILL!!! Drill until your body is about to fall apart. You have to remember that your grounded. when you do anything tribal, your feet are grounded and not lifted like Cabaret.

I may be wrong in all this but this is what i had learned. feel free to correct me.

Only really gutsy dancers do what I refere to as "Belly Dance Suicide".
(It's like "Karaoke Suicide" where you just pick a song at random and preform with no prior knowlage of it.) And I've never seen one just walk out on stage and do an actual preformance that way.

I improv alot. I really love it, alot of dancers dont however. lol
I'd never get up and improv to a song I've never listened to before, at least not for a preformance.

I do however improv to live drumming. You never quite know what you're in store for when it comes to live music, but if a dummer knows what he's doing he'll keep you on a steady beat, and take cues from your body for when you want the tempo raised or lowered. And alot of the drum rythems allow a break-beat motion, although I cant remember the name of it off hand.

Anywho...yea. Find a song with the break-beats in it, and listen to the song over and over and over and over again, until litterly you know it by heart and can feel the breaks. THEN go for it!

My instructor told me i need to know how to improv to songs i never heard before.

should be no problem. i'm pretty good at it. be ready to swich when need to, and if you can, get to know before hand.

sometimes when your performing for parties, they throw on music and you dance.

you may not know, but it will become familiar in time.

Mmmm....throwing on music and dancing... "Belly Dance Suicide".

I'm not saying it's not do-able. I dance to random music all the time at parties and concerts.

There's just a big differance between dancing at a party for people, and getting up on stage infront of hundreds plus people, and putting on a random song. Big differance.

oh i know, but we never do that during shows. only parties.

the only time i see it is during the ATS portion. my tribal instructor of course is the leader, and to prove their skill (i didn't go up with them at the time) put on music only she knew and believe it or not, they danced in unison the whole time.

Oh there's a trick to that! We call it "buffet".

Alot of times there's certain combos people use in situations like that.

We do that during our drumming improv. preformances. Everyone's famillar with the moves, and there's a small cue used to let the other dances know you're about to change to something else. We "yip" but sometimes it's something tiny like a small move of the head.

I love our drumming improv....mostly because how we do it, everyone gets a solo...and I get to show off and do floor work. lol

That actually happens relatively frequently over here. Shoot, I do it all the time at Faire, because I don't know half of the music that our Turkish group plays.

As far as random music + ATS, you really don't need to know what's playing, as long as it's a 4/4. ATS dance doesn't pay attention to any sort of breaks or rests in the music, but just relies on rhythm. Shoot, the group I dance with even does that to 6/8. Personally, I find that ATS gets a bit old. There's only so many moves that everyone knows and cycles through before even the audience gets tired of watching. Combos help change it up a bit, but it still gets boring.

That's why I dance fusion mostly. Nice wide group to pull moves from. Variety is the spice of life.

Nadeau: you do that floor work. biggrin

Itty: so true. the last ATS performance i was able to swallow all the way was by Chakra. i think thats how you spell their name. its two older ladies. i don't know if its pure improve or choreographed.

the last i know about ATS is that its strict improv.

but even so, sometimes you don't need to know music, if you know the different variations like taqsim, or sami, and know what you want to do for that section, it should be good.

I've actually done a complete improv solo to a song i'd never heard before. It wasn't at a huge show, but it was a paid performance and the girl who was supposed to do it (in our troupe) backed out, so i got volunteered cause i'm kind of like the prodigy (troupe's word, not mine, i think i suck) so i was kinda outta luck on that one, but it wasn't half bad, i used my arms a lot, and lots of walking and snakey moves to cover the fact that i didn't know what i was doing lol. And just as a side note, drummers are evil lol. Power hungry little buggers, at least ours is

Drummers can be evil, yes...specily if they dont work well with others.

Yours should take a drumming for dancers/dancing for drummers work shop and learn to place nice with others. lol

My troupe instructor tells us stories about the drummer she used to have...he'd show up stoned out of his mind and then randomly start playing all these crazy beats no one could dance to.
