Inspired by Dark Tigeress' unsolved mystery thread, I was wondering what everyone here thought the meaning of life was. I'm not asking for the right answer, or someone elses answer. Just yours.

As for me, I think that you ought to try in everything. Not do your upmost, because if you did that you'd be knackered just don't give in without trying. And also try to be nice to everything, and thoughtful, understanding and respectful.

I know it's a bit corney, but hey, I like it smile

I believe that everyone has their onw meaning of life. We are all here for a different reason or to do something different and we should try and find out what that is and do it before we die. I don't think there is one meaning of life but millons of meanings of the millions of people.

The meaning of life is connection. For me, anyway. Connecting with people, animals, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it's a connection of romance, of lust, of friendship... any positive connection.

That's what life is all about for me.

I don't appear to have been very successful as of yet.

Instinctively, I'd have to answer SEX! I mean, why else would the media make such a big commotion and advertise everything so that it makes you look sexy/attractive.

But after pondering for a bit..

The meaning of life isn't determined by how much money we make, or what job we get, but by how many lives we've touched. If we can just make a difference for the better in someone's life, than we've had a successful life.

Meh, I know its sappy, but that's what I believe..

I'd like to add to this. It's not how many lives we touch, but how much we touch the lives that we do touch.

You know I don't think there will ever be a sound definition of life, not even the dictionary really matches it the way most people interpret the question.

Here's what the dictionary says..

Quote:

1. a. The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism. b. The characteristic state or condition of a living organism.

2. Living organisms considered as a group: plant life; marine life.

3. A living being, especially a person: an earthquake that claimed hundreds of lives.

4. The physical, mental, and spiritual experiences that constitute existence: the artistic life of a writer.

5. a. The interval of time between birth and death: She led a good, long life. b. The interval of time between one's birth and the present: has had hay fever all his life. c. A particular segment of one's life: my adolescent life. d. The period from an occurrence until death: elected for life; paralyzed for life. e. Slang A sentence of imprisonment lasting till death.

6. The time for which something exists or functions: the useful life of a car.

7. A spiritual state regarded as a transcending of corporeal death.

8. An account of a person's life; a biography.

9. Human existence, relationships, or activity in general: real life; everyday life.

10. a. A manner of living: led a hard life. b. A specific, characteristic manner of existence. Used of inanimate objects: "Great institutions seem to have a life of their own, independent of those who run them" (New Republic). c. The activities and interests of a particular area or realm: musical life in New York.

11. a. A source of vitality; an animating force: She's the life of the show. b. Liveliness or vitality; animation: a face that is full of life.

12. a. Something that actually exists regarded as a subject for an artist: painted from life. b. Actual environment or reality; nature.

I'd like to add to this. It's not how many lives we touch, but how much we touch the lives that we do touch.

I'd like to add this further. It's not how much we touch the lives we touch, it's where we touch them. I wouldn't want anyone arrested, now.

On topic: I've done much pondering on the meaning of life. Overall I'd say it's: be a pretty decent guy/girl. Balance is important. You're going to succeed and screw up. Trying to prevent either is not natural.

I've speculated much about this as well. I still haven't been able to make sense of it. Most of the things you guys have posted had to do with making the world a better place. But that's too easy. Well, not too easy, just... I don't know... oversimplified, I guess. The thing I don't get is...

A man gets up at five thirty every morning so he can go to work. So he can have money. So he can live. So he can get up at five thirty the next morning and go to work. Why? The redundancy is striking when you first realize it. Depressing when you've thought about it a while.

We worry about how we appear to the opposite sex. So we can mate. So we can have children. So our race doesn't die out. But if all emotion is is hormones and a biological drive to further our race, then what is love? There is a fine distinction between love and lust. I've felt it. I've been told that the body actually physically reacts differently to both feelings.

Do we create God, El Shaddai, Deity, Goddess, whatever, so that we have something to look forward to? Or does it really exist? Perhaps religion is something that we make up because we don't want to believe that there's nothing after our deaths. We don't want to believe that our friends and family are gone forever. We don't want to believe that there is nothing out there for us and that our existence is aimless because then, what would be the point?

I think perhaps we aren't meant to know the meaning of life. And I've always wondered a little sardonically if maybe we don't find out until the second before we die what the real meaning of life is. Because some higher power doesn't want us telling anyone what it is. Or something. I've really confused myself. All of this that I've written is the reason I'm Agnostic, and if I could just figure it all out, I think I could be a much happier person. Because whenever I'm upset about something, for some reason, these are the things I think of. And I get very emotional about it, as you can see.

xd Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Personally, I belive there is no exact, simple answer to that question, as in most cases. You must decide it for yourself.

Well to me life isn't meant to be the changle, the way we made it these days.
I feel the meaning was oringal was basic life.
You are born, you grow, you find love, you settle, have family and live as long as possible.
Now it is mostly to me.
birth, grow, more education, work, look for love in late 30s, settle if found, have a kid, keep working, die old.
To me it seems less fun with todays ways so life is kinda lost to the urge to get more money, not just to provide but to show off with the lastest toys, gadgets, and so on.

yeah, my view sucks. xp

To me im not really sure if i believe in any meaning of life.. maybe to just being alive and thats it.. but the way i see it is that life is just a phase we go through to get to paradise/heaven.. i see heaven as the ulimate goal.. (or maybe its more that i would like to..)

The point of life is to live and then die. Death sets everything into proportion. It forces us to live. So go out live. Make a life for yourself. Party. If you want, have sex. If you want, get really smart and rich. Just live...because you're all going to die. xp
