I just wondered it maybe some interesting stories might come out of this topic. My bestfriend had VHD:Bloodlust and I watched him with it. Ironically, 3 years later it led to me meeting my now fiancee. Odd. LOL.

I don't have that great of a story on how I found out about VHD.

I just happened to see the first movie many years back and fell in love with it.

A friend of mine had the movie Blood: The Last Vampire. After that I went online to see what other vampire anime movies and shows there were. I found D. *sigh* And there he was, Bloodlust and the original and I downloaded them both and watched them with a wide smile (downloaded some others too). Although my computer crashed a short time after that I did get my mother to buy me the first movie for christmas some years back and just this summer I bought Bloodlust from a garage sale for $1 (it was VHS and although I don't own a VHS player, I had to have it). In the last year I've bought all the books too...soo...that's my romantic story.

I saw Bloodlust on TV late one night. As soon as I could, I ran to the store and bought the first novels xp

There was a time some years ago when there wasn't a whole lot of anime available to buy in town. The only place I could find anime to watch was the local video stores. Once when I was browsing a Blockbuster Video Store I was looking for anime to rent. And while I was looking over the titles I remember this cover caught my eye.

The artistry was completely different from all the other anime covers. And I saw the character design and thought right away, 'I wonder if the animation style is like the cover art?' It's romantic and charming in an old fashion way. But I didn't rent it that day because I found another title I wanted to watch. I rented Ninja Scroll instead. ninja But as I watched Ninja Scroll, something in one of the "Manga Entertainment Commercials" caught my eye again... It was a flash of this:

It was only a flash of this scene but it was enough to get me interested in finding that anime to see that dark character again. A few years later when I went to a Streetlight Record Stores that Buys, Sells and Trades. I spotted two copies of that title "Vampire Hunter D" on VHS. One box cover was the original Streamline Pictures cover that I saw before. And the second cover was the Orion Home Video. Of course that cover immediately won my heart. I wanted the movie so badly because of how beautiful D appears on the cover. (as seen below) But I couldn't decide which one to buy. The Streamline Picture VHS tape seemed in better condition then the Orion Home Video tape. I examined the cassettes carefully while deciding and seeing some of the "tape" under the lid of Orion Home Video VHS was actually worn and wavy I decided to do a little switch. I slipped out the VHS tape from the Streamline box and slipped it into the Orion Home Video box and went to pay for my movie. Luckily the cashier didn't notice a difference even when he slipped the movie out of the box to see if it was the right film. Only a collector of the VHD would have known about the difference. Or maybe he just didn't care. It didn't look like they cared. Now though when I think back on it. I wish I would have bought both to have both box covers. The streamline box is actually valuable now. I think I bought it back in 1997 maybe even earlier.

I wasn't too in love with the first movie's animation quality. But the character D and that story didn't fade with me. I created a Doris Lang persona on Yahoo in 2000 username hot_whipping_girl_doris_lang, and I had at the time a Website or shrine to honor D's Character from the movie in the role of Doris Lang. I even would roleplay Doris Lang pretty well and have my own Vampire Hunter D roleplay partner as we joined Chatrooms and play out scenarios for fun. I loved D a lot at that time even before Bloodlust was ever out. But Bloodlust helped to ignite my love for D even more. 3nodding heart

My story is much the same as many of the other older fans. There wasn't much out there for anime. Most people didn't know what it was, or thought it was all like speed racer. For a while, the best way to see new movies was to watch Sci Fi channel Sat mornings. They usually ran a few things from manga entertainment, or whatever they could find, I guess.

I saw a lot of older stuff like Akira, Rojuin Z, Iria, Battle Angel Alita, MD. Geist, and Vampire Hunter D. Pretty much all I'd seen before that were things like Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball.

I loved the movie, and even got my hands on a nice cel of D, but I didn't know there was a whole book series until I started buying Yoshitaka Amano art books. I got into Amano from his character design work on the Final Fantasy games, and started picking up art books. I was pleasantly surprised that he'd done the D illustrations, but Dark Horse hadn't started translating the novels yet.

The second movie came out, and I was really very excited about it. A few years after that, I noticed the first novel on a shelf at Hastings, and started picking them up. I've also got a few action figures from the second movie, and my husband has given me two cold-cast porcelein statues as gifts, on two seperate holidays.

One is a kotobukia statue of D holding his sword. My cat knocked it over and ruined it crying
I painstakingly glued everything back together, but it's not the same crying crying
I love it, and I wish I could get another to replace it, but you can't find them anymore. It wasn't the one they released as a Vampire Hunter D statue. It came from the Yoshitaka Amano line many years ago. I think it's called "Nightmare" It wasn't a resin kit, though. Mine came pre-painted from kotobukiya. Argh.. I wish it wasn't ruined.

The second is a statue of Meyerling and Charlotte together. It's from the scene towards the end of the second movie where Carmilla seduces Charlotte with illusions, so if you want to get picky, it's not really the two of them together. But this one, I'll take at face value razz
