Aoibheann flew easily through the spring skies toward the meadow where she was going to meet her son and mate, and perhaps, if they were nearby, her daughters. She backwinged as she approached the ground, spreading her elegant, speckled brown wings and drawing them in with powerful muscles to land gracefully in the center of the meadow. The others weren't here yet, but she hoped they would arrive soon. Relieved she wasn't running late, she looked around the meadow. The wildflowers were beginning to really bloom explosively, spring mixing with the newer blooms of impending summer, throwing the meadow into a riot of colors and releasing so many fresh, sweet scents amidst the scent of the green wild grasses. Best of all, the lupine was at the right point to start grazing it, and if there was one plant that Aoibheann loved as a treat, it was lupine.
As she bent to graze, the wind combed her long, silky blue-green mane, letting it flow out, as the wind ruffled her brown tail feathers. Aoibheann was much more at home in the skies, so she spread out her brown pinions to keep her balance. It was still early enough that there was dew on the lupine, and that made the lupine all the sweeter for her. The grasses tickled her stark white-and-dark brown face, as did the dew clinging to the wildflowers and the grass. High above, the puffy white clouds slowly made their stately way across the sky, pushed faster by the wind blown in from the sea. She smiled as she grazed, and eventually stopped paying attention to how soon the rest of her little family would arrive.

The beautiful spring day gave Clifton the best opportunity to spread his wings and soar. He loved flying, and especially when the weather was perfect.
Today he was supposed to be meeting his family in a meadow nearby. He was never on time, and keeping with tradition, today was no different. He flew in circles, enjoying the currents that helped him keep to the higher elevations. He sped through the clouds, chuckling to himself. He and his sisters used to play in them when they were younger.
He flew a bit lower, out of the clouds and spotted his mother grazing in a field below. He tucked his wings in and fell into a dive, heading straight for his mother. He zoomed by her at such a speed, that the wind from him ruffled her feathers and blew her mane into disarray. He laughed heartily, and opened his wings a few feet away, coming to a not so graceful halt, stirring up dirt and dust and leaving a trail of disturbed earth behind him. He wobbled on his legs a bit, but quickly regained his balance before turning to his mother. "Hi mom." He grinned widely. "Where's everyone else?" He trotted over to her and noticed the disturbance he had caused. "Ehh, sorry." he said sheepishly. "Didn't mean to do that."

Spring's delicate scents filled Elune's nostrils; the overwhelming sense of new life instantly sent her heart racing, and she quickened her hoofsteps. As the grassy outcropping drew near, she stretched her moss pigmented wings toward the heavenly body of life far above. Suddenly her hooves reached the brittle edge of the escarpment, and she utilized her sinewy leg muscles to leap into the air before spreading her wings. With powerful, yet elegant wing beats she swiftly gained altitude and headed toward her destination.
Elune was to meet her beloved family, her parents and siblings, in a gorgeous meadow surrounded by the thick, old-growth trees of The Deep Forest. The meadow was filled with a variety of plants, each with it's own delicious scent and flavor. The thought of such a bountiful feast among the company of her dearest loved ones made her heart glow. She dipped below the clouds into a warm current, and hastened her wing beats.
At last the gentle vegetation was in view, and Elune dipped further toward the earth. Her mother and brother, Sir Clifton, were already enjoying the soft grasses and herbs; she touched down just feet from them, barely disturbing the reeds. She gracefully folded her wings, and stepped toward her mother. "Greetings mother," she said happily, with her head lowered slightly, respectfully, as she nuzzled her mother's neck. "I apologize for my lack of punctuality."

Aoibheann smiled as her son landed gracelessly with a laugh. She couldn't help but grin broadly as she nuzzled him and then began to resettle her feathers and mane. "Hey, Clifton. You're the first one here. It's all right, I'll just get my feathers settled again. Hopefully your father will be here soon, and I don't know where your sisters are...oh, look, there's Elune!"
Indeed, Aoibheann's green daughter was landing delicately and coming closer. She lowered her head and nuzzled her daughter's neck back. "Elune dear, it's all right, it's just Clifton and myself so far. Your father should be on his way. Have you heard from your sister, Rementh, lately?" She was so happy to see two of her beautiful children, eager to see her splendid mate, and while she hoped to see her distant daughter Rementh, doubted Rementh would make it. Ah, well, at least the rest of the family would be here, hopefully.

He was late, he knew it. Mayur had lost the track of time during his forage for food. Running or flying? Which would be faster to get him to the meadows? He decided on flying, with a running start he took off into the skies, his wings spreading behind him, his long tail saying folded and followed suit. He glided for a while and then lifted himself above the trees heading for the meadows in which they had chose to meet at.
The light breeze ruffled his tail feathers as he flew towards the meeting place. It wasn't long before he arrived, landing even more ungraceful than his son, Sir Clifton, had done many moments before. "Sorry I am late," He mutter sheepishly as he trotted out of the large cloud of dust he had lifted up off the ground from his poor landing.

Clifton smiled towards his sister, nodding his head to her in greeting, and when his father landed, he stepped towards him. "Nice landing dad," he grinned at him. "I wonder what's keeping Rementh?" he asked, towards his parents.
Clifton stretched his legs and fanned his tail feathers, letting the cool breeze flow through them. He noticed how simliar he looked to his father. He was quite proud to bear such a resemblance to his father. He was very proud of his family as well.

Elune smiled softly to take the edge off of what she had to say; she knew how deeply her mother cared for her children, and just by observing the worried look in her face she saw time had not changed that. "I haven’t spoken with her in some time I'm afraid," Elune said softly. "This is not uncommon for Rementh, however, since she is so independent and forever wandering. I'm sure all is well." She did her best to offer comfort, nuzzling her mother’s mane once more.
Elune returned the greeting her brother offered then, nodding to him happily. She recalled images of their pleasant childhood; times when they were small enough to hide among the reeds which barley brushed their forearms now. It seemed as if only a few sun circles ago her adult plumage was beginning to replace the fluffy wisps of adolescent feathers, and they began to learn history of their kin.
Elune’s thoughts dissipated as she caught the image of her father attempting to land with a powerful upward stroke in the corner of her eye. Within seconds he made contact, touching down roughly; the earth stirred beneath his sharp hooves. A passing wind carried the cloud of dust away quickly as he stepped toward them. Sir Clifton addressed him first, and then Elune approached him, nosing his neck. "Greetings father," she said with a cheerful smile.

Hoofbeats carried through the morning air as Rementh raced through the forest trying to find enough room to open her azure wings to take to the sky but the tree cover just wouldn't cooperate with her today of all days. She had promised to put her adventuring on hold and meet up with her family but here she was once again running late all because she just had to follow her nose when a strange new scent caught her attention. Rementh was forever chasing shadows as she tried to learn all the world had to offer so she could use that information to shape it into the world of her dreams. Nothing escaped the curiosity of the young mare. Her parents had warned her time and time again that is wasn't good to keep her head in the clouds but if her head wasn't meant to be in the clouds then why did she have wings?
She spotted a break in the canopy and silently prayed that she would have enough room to finally break from the ground and sore as she was meant to. Extending her wings she began to beat them hard as she bounded over branches and brambles in her path. She could do it; she had to. Rearing she pushed off with her strong hind legs and winged into the sky catching some leaves and a twig in her flight feathers as she clipped a tree branch in her assent. The added foliage caused her to fly a little erratic but she compensated and soon was flying smoothly as she tried to ignore the constant irritation.
It would have taken forever to run meadow but the gift of flight brought the peaceful scene into view in no time at all. The new green spring growth dotted by flowers in every color of the rainbow dazzled Remi. She circled around the meadow lazily enjoying the colors and sweet fresh scents before remembering that she was here to visit with her family..... and there they were.
Rushing towards the little herd Remi dipped her wings to land forgetting about the added drag of the plant matter embedded in her wings. As her dainty hooves touched the ground she began to skid until she tumbled over rolling across the ground in a wreckage of fur, feathers and wildly flailing hooves to finally roll to a stop at her mother's feet.
Unblinking eyes stared up at Aoibheann from within the dust cloud as the little mare coughed before smiling at her parent. "Hi, mom! Better late then never, huh?"

Mayur gave his son a light grin back at the comment that had been stated. "Lets see you try better," he spoke his little challenge. He then shook his wings, shaking all of the dirt out of them, his head stretched back preening them a bit. As he shook himself his large tail feathers fanning out for a moment before folding back neatly again.
He gave a light nod of his head to Elune's greeting and was just about to trot over to greet his mate when Rementh arrived, landing in such a priceless way. A large grin spread crossed his face when he moved to his mate's side. He lightly nuzzled her neck with the side of his face. "Looks like you need to give your daughter a few pointers on how to land properly." He muttered soft enough that only she would be able to hear him.
The male peacock kirin then let his eyes wander down to that very same daughter he was talking about. "Yes better late then never, and no greeting for your dear old dad?" He questioned her lightly.

Aoibheann just had to laugh as she saw her mate and her other daughter land. "I was worried it would be some time before we saw each other again," she said, moving to start pulling the leaves and twigs from Rementh's mane, tail, and wings. "Looks like you got a late start taking off and took some of the trees with you." Of all their children, in terms of physical appearance, Rementh and Elune were the least similar to Aoibheann and Mayur, though in personality, Elune seemed to be taking very strongly after her mother. Rementh on the other hand...there was just simply something very sweet and naive about Rementh, and even though Rementh's dreamy nature combined with her curiosity and desire to explore far from her family put her at odds with her parents at time, Aoibheann still loved her wayward daughter.
"So, now that we're all here, what has everyone been up to?" She definitely planned to speak last. She and Mayur had been thinking, and decided it was time to think about giving Elune, Clifton, and Rementh baby siblings. The concept excited her, having more foals to care for and love; Aoibheann just wasn't quite at home unless she was being a mother to *some* foal she found, regardless of its diet (though she drew the line at kirkani foals who refused to learn not to munch on other kirin) or any other fact about the foal. She simply loved little ones and caring for them.

Clifton watched as his other sister came to a crash landing near the family. As soon as he knew she was okay, he burst into laughter. He had always had a crude sense of humor, and laughing at others humiliation was part of it. He tossed his head up and down and stamped his feet as he laughed heartily at his sisters blunder.
Then, sensing a stern look from his mother, he stopped abruptly. "Are you alright Rementh?" he asked in a kind voice, trying hard to suppress his laughter. "I dare say your landing was a bit worse off than mine or dad's."
He then turned to his mother, to answer her question. "Well, I've been searching for a mate. No luck yet, for I haven't found the perfect mare to catch my eye and meet my expectations. I want nothing less than the best for my mate." (And by 'for his mate,' he wasn't exactly meaning for her, but for him. Clifton was a very shallow and picky stallion.)

"Not much going with me," He replied and lightly nuzzled his mate's neck with his muzzle. "Just roaming the lands a bit." His wings shifted lightly on his back. "Just a bit worse," He agreed with his son with a small smile.

Elune turned her head to cloak her wide grin as Rementh rolled to a stop in front of their mother’s hooves. She was not amused by her sister’s misfortune however; she was delighted that despite her family’s noble elegance, they truly loved each other for the content of their individual characters, particularly the quirks and supposed flaws. The absence of conceit among them, save a twinge in a certain brother of hers, was a trait Elune held in high regard. Too many times she’d observed a vain and vastly immature Kirin deems his or herself more visually appealing than others, and as such belittle those others. I will never forget how blessed I am to call them my kin she thought to herself as she faced them once more.
“Greetings Rementh,” Elune said gently as her mother pulled all manner of verdure from her sister’s feathers, “Are you badly bruised?”
Her mother spoke then, and Elune knew something deeply meaningful was on her [mother’s] mind; the gentle look in those eyes spoke volumes, though Elune hadn’t quite decided what it could be. Clifton answered first, and she sighed under her breath at his answer, shaking her head lightly and smiling. My brother, I care for you dearly but when will you learn she thought with a trifle of worry, not daring to say a word to him aloud, especially with all of their kin around. Of course she hoped he would find a wonderful mate, but she wasn’t sure if he was really ready to share his life that way, especially with the implications in such a statement.
It was her father’s turn, and his rather empty answer caught her off guard; he rarely had so little to say about his wanderings, particularly to his kin. She recalled wondrous stories of his adventures in the thickest parts of the Deep Forest, and during stormy days at the shallow edges of the Golden Sea. She would have liked to chew over the thoughts running through her head about the strange behaviors both of her parents seemed to exhibit a bit longer, but it was her turn to speak, and she would have a hard enough time trying to conjure up something interesting to tell them (not that she would lie mind you, but to simply make the way she spent her days seem more “normal” than what they truly were).
“My dear kin, since I started traveling further and further from you, I’ve observed everything in our world that I can set my eyes on, or tune my ears to,” Elune began. “There are so many mysterious truths; I’ve observed Pryrin stalk and hunt their prey, and wondered why though we eat small rodents and insects on occasion we do not partake in such a meat rich diet. I’ve listened to stories told by wandering elders of the great goddess Aerithe, and wondered what she looks like; a spirit so wise must be very lovely, and surly she has deep eyes.”
Elune was silent for a moment as she gathered her thoughts.
“I have secretly watched many other creatures live their lives, as well as other Kirin,” she continued. “ The need to find food to maintain survival is a top priority for us all. In spare time some creatures are even driven to collect objects and hoard them, such as feathers or odd stones. In the end however family ties are the most treasured positions of all creatures, great and small. Of course many creatures, particularly Kirin, find also a need to protect the flora and fauna along with their families; I feel that we hold the highest responsibility in maintaining this ideal, for we are among the most intelligent creatures in existence it seems. The world is so vast and full of life, it’s truly a spectacular sight; I am very grateful to be able to witness such beauty and wonder.”
Even as she finished she considered the answers to many of her questions, and pondered her family’s reaction to what she shared with them; would they find it odd that she wanted to learn so much, and was it odd that she didn’t know some of the answers already? Truly she knew some, but in more or less an obvious sense of knowing, and not the true meaning that time brings along.
((“Deep Eyes” refers to a high level of serious intellectual understanding and general intelligence; the way many human elders’ eyes appear))

"I have eaten some of the things you have mentioned. An occassional rodent, and fish does help the diet, and fills my stomach. Of course, I would never go as far as the Kirkani and their disgusting habits. To eat another kirin. Bah!" and with that, Clifton shook his head to rid himself of the thought, and stamped his hooves hard on the ground.
"I'm glad to know you have learned many things on your adventures sister, but you've made no mention about finding a mate. Have you been searching?"
He hoped that his sisters would find a strong stallion to protect them. He hated to think that anything would happen to any of his family, for it was his greatest pride.
He turned to his mother again. "So, now that we all are gathered, will you please tell us why we're gathered here?"

Aoibheann smiled at Clifton and Elune. "You've both learned a lot, I see," she said. The moment had come to tell them, to tell them that she was carrying eggs again, even though it was yet early in her pregnancy. She just knew. "Clifton, Elune, Rementh, Mayur and I love you all very much, but it's kind of lonely without little ones in the nest. So your father and I have decided to give you younger siblings. I'm already carrying them inside me." Now that she'd said it, she could relax a bit and see what they had to say.
((This is admittedly a change from my previous post, because the second batch of kids will probably be growing to adulthood pretty soon. ^^ wink )
