Isabella smiled gaily as she bounded to the front door of the Ice cream shoppe. It was a beautiful afternoon in early spring, and a good day for ice cream, but then again any day was a good day for ice cream; ice cream did not have bad days.
Somewhere behind her the housekeeper and sometimes nanny Emma walked leisurely up the sidewalk, the ice cream had been Emma's idea, and Bella found it a most agreeable way to spend an afternoon. Though she wised her father could have joined them on the outing.
Pushing the heavy thoughts from her mind, Bella waited for Emma to catch up before pulling open the heavy door to the Parlor. The inside of the shop was blessedly cool. The floors and counters gleamed and the vast tubs of ice cream sat in tidy rows in their glass cooler.
Yes, Isabella decided, this was very close to heaven.

Risa watched as an excited Miles raced into the ice cream parlor. She grinned, and walked in, the bell hanging from the door knob ringing. "So what flavor do you want?" She asked the toddler. She looked at the tubs of ice cream, each was labeled with its name.
"Chocolate!" Miles told her happily. Then he spotted a girl around his age. His smile widened, and he toddled over to her. "Hi!" He said. "I 'iles, what your name?"

Isabella looked curiously at the other child, she hadn't had much experience with children her own age.
"I am Isabella." She told him formally, with clear punctuation, then smiling added, "But people call me Bella." She curstied formally, like she'd been taught at home and grinned happily at the boy. "It's nice to meet you, "Iles".

Risa looked over at the two. "His name's Miles." She corrected. "He's still having trouble with his th and mm sounds." Of course he would, he was a toddler, it was still hard to believe that he'd been a cabbage a few weeks ago. She too had once had difficulty understanding the boy's lisp, but after a week she had gotten used to it.
The first name the girl said was much too long for Miles to even attempt saying. "Bella." He repeated happily. "Pwetty name!" He smiled at her, and tilted his head slightly. "Whatcha doing?" He asked, watching her curtsy. He'd never seen anyone do something like that.

"I'm sorry for getting it wrong, Miles." Bella said sincerely. "And thank you, I like my name a lot." She grinned at the other child.
"I'm getting ice cream!" Isabella told him excitedly. "I've only had it once, but it was wonderful! I liked it a lot. Emma took me to get some today." She guested excitedly toward the stout woman who was hovering nearby in front of the ice cream coolers. "Do you like ice cream Miles?" She whispered excitedly.

"It 'kay." Miles said, shrugging. Zemel called him 'Iles' too, he didn't mind. It was something he could call himself. "Ice-cream's good." He agreed. "I like it lots." He looked at Risa, who was looking at the flavors. "Mommy bring me here for ice-cream with cousins once." He paused, to think about it. "'Osh got 'nilla, and Vinny got cookie-dough." He said with a nod. "'Osh and Vinny my favowite cousins."
They were also his only cousins old enough to play. The two girls were still unable to walk, so Miles paid little attention to them. "What kind you like, Bella?" He asked.

Bella thought for a long moment about his question. . . . Though she'd only had the stuff once before this.
"Hn. . . . I like vanilla! With strawberries in it!" Vanilla she knew, she'd had that flavor and strawberries were something she got on special occasions as home, so she knew they were good, the two mixed together would be wonderful!

Miles knew what strawberries were, so he nodded. "Stwawbewwies good." He said. "Mom keep them in backyawd. Apples and chewwies too. And-and..." He paused, to think about it.
"Chocolate's best." He stated. "Not with stwawbewwies."
