The leather seat squeaked as Lee slid herself below back-seat-window view, trying to hide from the parting crowds glaring at the car as it rolled through a particularly busy street. "Oh, sit up." Her mother pulled on Lee's shoulder and shook her head. "How embarrassing." She was rightfully embarrassed, though it should have been more of the driver than of Lee. If anyone was too stubborn not to hurry out of the car's path, Lee was sure they'd regret it. She didn't remember him driving this recklessly in the upper districts. The car halted in an instant, and Lee's knees knocked against the seat in front of her. "Well...?" Her father motioned his head toward the store front outside Lee's door. When it became clear that Lee was not about to get out willingly, her mother nodded to the driver and seconds later Lee was out in the streets staring through the car window down at her parents faces. It was the first time she'd ever seen them wear such proud smiles. They're not coming? They waved their hands and mouthed "Go!" Lee turned and walked slowly toward the door, looking back at her parents every few steps to see if they would have a last minute change of heart. "Of course not," she whispered when she reached the door. She took a quick glance around the area. Good, no authorities. She slowly cracked the door open and slid inside, careful to make as little noise as possible.

Things had been rather quiet today. Misha'd gotten home in the early morning after a particularly draining run. He'd delivered his paperwork tohis Owner, and then hadn't had the spirit anymore to go and find a more decent place to crash than the little salon in the corner. His bag by his side, one arm over his chest and the other limply hanging, he was sleeping on one of the couches there, head resting on his ears comfortably. It was sort of endearing his he'd pulled his cap down over his eyes, until it almost touched the tip of his nose.
Timka had left him be, having enough to keep herself busy with, and preferring him to be within her sight and NOT molasternating the plants with his occasional spikes in curiosity about how a flower looked on the inside. His calm breathing and the flackers of paperwork had been the only sound for a long whilenow. In the dozy atmosphere, miss Longway didn't hear the front door open -they really needed to install one of those annoying sensors sometime- and only noticed someone had entered when the girl was almost in the Lobby.
Slamming close the heavy file she had been working on with a dull thud, she got up from her seat and pushed the chair under the desk neatly. Who was this again? As she walked round and exited her little domain to welcome the visitor, she remembered who this was. Why in the world was she alone? Were her parents busy elsewhere and would they join them later, perhaps?
"Welcome to Life Essentials, miss Katan." she smiled at her, with a touch of feeling that rarely made it into her tone. The fact Misha was resting only a few paces further away added to her turning down her volume.
"Assuming you are here because out our invitation, have you considered our offer?" First things first. If she had, she could go and pester Banning.

As she entered the Lobby, Lee had just fully adjusted to the quiet of the building, a stark contrast to what she'd been experiencing in the streets. Panic quickly rose at the sound of the cabinet closing, but fell just as quickly at the sight of the woman walking toward her. She'd been expecting someone a little more... threatening. Muscular, maybe a few tattoos, not this woman. She cleared her throat. She paid little attention to what the woman was saying as her mind continued to dread what could have been -- what still could be. She had yet to meet anyone else here. "Invitation...?" Noticing her hands were fidgeting, she clasped them behind her back and straitened her posture. She was still breathing heavily, but she tried to look composed. "Right, yeah. The letter. Yeah, that's why I'm here." Her words came out faster than intended and she gave a few nervous nods, though she didn't notice how obvious her fear was becoming. "I can go get my parents if you want..." She motioned outside, hoping the woman might ask her to bring them in. Heck, she might even say she was too young to be sticking her neck into "adult business". One can always hope, at least.

Aw, poor lass. Already mollified, Timka let her professional touch slip further, until she felt she was able to act more like the casual friendly woman she was when not dealing with jobs requiring more a more frigid manner.
"They didn't come with you hmm... But I get the feeling you will do just fine without them." she smiled, winked at her. Aah, she'd help this girl out for sure, she'd walk her through the procedure herself before getting banning involved. It was coming back to her now, yes, this girl was here for a Services Spark, for a most unpleasant purpose. If she'd let young miss Lee involve her parents now, she'd never be satisfied with the choice she would make for her Spark. No, this was her moment, and her choice alone.
"If I recall correctly, you are here to make a contract with us, and pick up your Spark here? A Services, to help you with... schoolwork?" Longway pulled a silly face at that, a sourly twisted grin, to show her she could empathise. Blargh, how unpleasant.
"It'll be okay, trust me. If you would come over here and take a seat?" she again smiled relaxedly, making no big fuss about this, and walked over to the saloon.
"Hey, get up you, we have a guest." with a wry chuckle, she gave the sleeping Essentic a shove, and he stirred. Still sluggish, Misha obeyed her, slipped off the couch and stood up, rubbing his eyes with his knucles and trying -and fialing- to suppress a yawn.
"This is Misha, miss Katan." Longway introduced him. "He is my Essentic, a Messenger. A Services type, just like the one we have in mind for you."
"Ah...? Oh, hello miss.." stifling another yawn, Misha waved at her sleepily, shrugged an ear back over his shoulder and flustered with his bag. "Nice to meet you."
Maybe seeing Misha, Lee would get a better idea of what a grown Essentic might look like and soothe some of her worries. It's rather hard to be intimidated by the bunny, after all.

Lee nodded as the woman talked. She wasn't much interested in going into detail about why she needed a spark -- it was bad enough this stranger knew as much as she did -- but Lee couldn't help but feel she could relate. "I guess." She tried to play down her "situation" and hoped the conversation wouldn't be about her educational inadequacy.
Trust her? Somehow, she did. Perhaps a little too much. "Why is someone like you working here? What if you get caught?" Maybe it was a bit rude, but Lee couldn't distinguish proper conversation from prying. The only thing that mattered to her now was the fact that the weight of the situation seemed to disappear as she opened up about her worries.
Lee felt a small laugh try to escape as the woman lightly shoved the boy. If anything, it was comforting to know of another "normal" person working here.
"An essentic...?" The words didn't process correctly in her brain. For a moment the word itself sounded foreign.
It clicked. "This is an essentic?!" She stared at the boy, moving to different angles to get a good look. This couldn't be right. They never said anything about bunnys in history class. Unless said bunny was plotting to take over human civilization. "But he's... it's..." Now she didn't know what to think. "This is an essentic..." she confirmed to herself. Not a person, not a tool gone malevolent, but an essentic. She'd have to consult her history books again.
She looked up at her with a bright smile. Her hands clasped with delight as she looked back and forth from the boy to the woman. "What's mine look like?"

Why, what a bold question! It was enough to make the woman chuckle. "'Someone like me', dear? It pays well, the insurance benefits are wondrous, it's certainly interesting, and hey... Master DeLonghy takes great care not to attract any attention. We're not dealing drugs or weapons here, eh." she smiled, a little deviously. "Unless you're calling this silly bun-buns dangerous."
"Yup, that's 'an Essentic' alright. Don't mind his ears and tail sweetie, that wasn't really planned for. He's so ashamed of whatever landed him a rabbit-influence he still won't tell me, right Misha?" Now it was really hard to say if she was just teasing, or if that really was the tactless stab it sounded like.
The poor bunny, still only half awake, stood as still as he could, keeping an eye on the girl who was determined to check him out from all up close. It remened him of those cartoons about alien abductions, and he really felt uncomfortable being probed with her looks like this, but that was bearable. What hurt more was Longway talking about him like that. She was his owner, and he wouldn't stop adoring her like a puppy desperately needed a master, but he couldn't help feeling another stab of that odd feeling... That strong desire to be accepted as someone 'normal', not a failed attempt at being human, to have his feelings respected. All that turmoil was too vague in his heart for him to know why it made him feel bad though, and he only let himself sag a little listlessly.
"Ohoho, that's like asking what a littlebaby will grow into lass, there's no telling with these guys." Longway chuckled at her question. "For now you'll have t do with something less spectacular though. You see, Essentics are made from.. rocks, from Sparks. You will get to take the Spark home, and then, it'll grow into what we call the Proto stage." A short overview of the development followed, and she explained her about Influences, too, noting how through Influences, she could try to make her Essentic 'look' like almost anything she could think of.
Again, Misha felt that gut-deep nausea. Why, he tried so hard to be human, what WAS she talking like this... He kept himself in check though, and the sadness showing on his face could just as easily have been sleepiness.
"So, now, you will sign that Contract with mister Banning. If you want to, I'll help you read through it, it's nothing special, and not even official. It's a bit like a handshake, where you promise us you'll be responsible with it." Longway ended her little introduction, and handed her a little neat pamphlet with the basic info she'd just been given. Always came in handy, those things.
"Banning will also ask you to Infuse the Spark with its purpose. You will hold it in your hands, and you will tell it to be what you want it to be. It'll work best if you wish it really hard, of you, forgive me for sounding cheesy, think towards it with all your heart. It will know you are its Owner then, and what it has to do for you."
"DoI go get master DeLonghy now?" Misha interrupted her right there, holding back that edge of plagued impatience. He didn't want to sound whiny.
Longway cast him an irritated look for a second, her scolding cold stare making him turn his head aside ashamedly, and she looked at Lee again. "Anything else you want to know before I send mister mopey up to fetch the boss?"

Knowing that "this silly bun-buns" was what she'd been worried about all along, Lee probably should have been a bit embarrassed about making such a big fuss before. However, she was very familiar with making a fool of herself in public over a misunderstanding, so much so that such things didn't affect her anymore.
Lee was a little disappointed to hear that every essentic didn't necessarily have the pre-packaged cute Misha seemed to display. But maybe that was a good thing? Though it was clear that these weren't the danger she'd been taught to believe, something in her still told her it may be best for her essentic to draw as little attention as possible. After all, she doubted bunny ears were easy to hide.
Wait... did she say a rock? How was a rock going to help her study? She rubbed the back of her neck, unsure whether or not to ask a burning question. She went for it. "Um, could you maybe just give me the proto?" While she wasn't so foolish to think the woman would actually agree to this proposition, she thought she'd take her chances. Lee wasn't trying to be cute, nor was she trying to get a reaction from the woman, she was simply impatient.
Talk of Influences caught her attention; she was both intrigued and frightened. If the essentic were to, say, stumble upon a few lizards, she'd basically be stuck with a monster? Add a few sharp objects to that and she'd have nightmares for the rest of her life. She made a mental note to keep the essentic away from scary stuff.
Lee clasped her hands together and started twirling her thumbs as the conversation started leaning more toward business. Mister Banning, the man her parents had apparently spoken with. A man, she supposed, with a lot of authority. While everyone else here had been very pleasant, he could be an entirely different story. Lee's head shot up at the mention of the nice woman's help in this deal and she nodded quite forcefully. "Please stay!" She trusted this woman with her life, it seemed. She grabbed the offered pamphlet out of courtesy but didn't bother looking inside.
Lee wondered how and if such a process really worked, but didn't question it. She'd just do as she was told and hope for the best. I hope I don't mess this up...
Misha's words caught Lee by surprise; she'd forgotten he was here. Wait, a he, right? Not an it? Ugh, she was so confused. She was too busy working out this conundrum in her head to notice any uncomfortable tension between the two. With the woman's voice broke her concentration. Questions... well, sure, she had a lot of them. But maybe these were best left unasked.
Wait, there was something she had yet to find out. "Well... just one question. What's your name?"

Ah, another one of those questios, where DID the lass keep pulling them from? Timka chuckled again, and went on to trying to explain her why they couldn't do that.
"Ah, well that would be inconvenient... You remember what I just told you about the Essence Sparks and their purpose? You get the Spark, so you can elet it tune to you and make it aaall yours. We can't 'make' your Proto for you, and honestly... I don't think our boss would like having them all run around here, either." The vision of this office filled with a myriad of strange life forms made her grin. The duke would go mad within a week, she guessed.
When young miss Katan voiced her concerns about being left to deal with Banning, she was soothed quickly. "Ah, don't worry... I'll stay right here, you won't have to do this all by yourself. Only the signing and the attuning I can't do for you." Longway smiled, quite genuinely friendly. She could only imagine what an uncomfortable situation this must be for the girl.
"Hmm... Well, my name is Timka Longway." she introduced herself, perhaps with less enthusiasm about her name than she should have. A smile she could manage, though. At least that had been an easy one...
Assuming that there were no further questions then, she sent Misha away with a curt gesture, and he dutifully strode away, up the staircase with light bounds. Less than a minute later, he came back down again. "He's on his way..." Aw bunny-dear, stop sounding so depressed already, life is beautiful.
Misha had been lucky to run into Banning in the hall, and after the man had fetched his usual stack of documents, he descened the stairs after the Essentic and walked into the Lobby.
"Good day, milady Katan." Right away he greeted her, while he was still striding towards the salon with his long steps and straight posture. He cast her a smile that held no warmth, merely a distant, business-like interest. At the very least, he couldn't be accused of a lack of manners and distinction.
Taking over from his employee, he controlledly lowered down on the chair before her own chosen seat, while Longway remained rooted to her spot by Lee's side relaxedly. She and Banning exchanged glanced for a second.
"If you feel you have been properly informed by my assistant, you may now sign the Contract she undoubtedly told you about. After that, I will retrieve the Spark that will be yours upon attuning it to yourself." Setting his slightly messy stack of paper down on the black table, he cut right down to business. It didn't take him long to find the right parchment, and once he had, he laid the document out to her, setting a richly decorated pen down beside it for her to use, if she was ready. He observed her calmly, with the smile of a dormant hawk. There was no danger, the beast was content.

Timka Longway. Got it. Lee nodded her head once in understanding. Should I call her Timka or Miss Longway...? She decided this question would have to wait, as Misha dashed away and quickly returned with Banning.
What a weird feeling of familiarity she felt around him. Lee was surprised to find him just as relatable as Miss Longway, though in an entirely different manner. She'd dealt with his kind many times before. He was a nobleman. While she herself had considerably less class than was expected of her, she was not intimidated in the least.
She waved and weakly smiled back as he walked past her, and soon foud herself trailing quickly behind Miss Longway. She followed his lead and sat in the chair she assumed was saved for her, folding her fingers in her lap after she was comfortable. She may as well pretend to have class.
Looking down at the papers in front of her, she bent over to take a look. Seemed like a lot of gibberish. She read the first sentence... wait, what is that word? She kept going, hoping that it would all make sense if found those "context clues" her teacher had told her to look for. Nothing but more foreign words. She looked up at Miss Longway with a small hint of desperation in her eyes. Lee pointed at the word. "What's a clause?" She peeked over to Banning; he was probably having a good laugh on the inside. He was good, though, keeping that poker face up. She decided not to wait for Miss Longway's answer, and pulled the papers closer to scribble what could be considered a signature. More like bubble letters, really. She shoved the papers back across the desk and flashed the man a nervous smile. "So." she tried on a business-like tone that really didn't suit her. "Where is it?"

Oh, what a delightful young lady. Banning observed her fumble with an indeed slightly too amused smile. Why yes, he had developed a keen sense for the intricate mechanisms of the behaviour expected from nobles, and despite not being a traditionalist, he greatly valued the impact on others these manners had.
Miss Katan was definitely of the lax sort, not very eager to spend so much energy on appearing more than she was, but when she tried, she could most certainly achieve the distant sort of daintiness that would make young men fall for her like uprooted trees. If she would like to make them squirm and writhe, she would be able to. At least Banning himself had never been enraptured by the female half of the species, most likely due to his other obsession and the reluctancy and inexperience to even make an attempt. Maybe he'd just grown beyond needing romance, too?
Ah, he could see why she needed a tutor. So did Longway, who at first attempted to try and clarify the sentence, but trailed off and gave up whn the lass decided it wasn't worth the effort. Nice to know she trusted them, but Timka couldn't help wanting to chide her for being careless about things like this. Then again, they had told her it wasn't of any legal consequence...
"So, now I shall go and retrieve it for you." Banning nodded complacently, sat up and left for the storage. He slipped in, leaving the door open just a nudge, but inside, all was dark. Only a minute or two later, he walked back out, closed the door behind him, and returned to their spot of conference.
Before Lee, he put down a sturdy little box, with a teal metallic sheen, engraved with simplistic curly designs. Quite a pretty effect, both blue and green shimmered into each other depending on the angle you looked at it. Banning opened it up, clicking the lid and setting it open for the lady to see. Not a word crossed his lips when he looked at her, waiting impassively for her reaction.
Within, on a black velvet cloth, lay her Spark, the stone that held her Essentic-to-be. It was a smooth, dry blue stone, a texture so soft and warm you'd almost expect it to leave behind a bit of that pastelly dust on your hands after touching it. From a harder tinted rift that seemed to split it in half, a dense, intense jade mass of ectoplasm welled forth, even splitting off little bubbles that floated up like heavy drops.
"Do you remember what to do now?" Longway asked Lee softly, referring to what she'd told her about now picking it up and imbuing it with purpose, tieing it to herself as this Spark's owner.

Lee watched Banning as he left the room to retrieve the spark. She turned to Miss Longway and smiled, half as an apology for ignoring her explanation, and half as a "thanks for trying."
As Banning reentered the room, Lee stared at the box he was holding. Already she was impressed. Perhaps this would come with her "rock"? How fun it would be to show her friends! Ah, well, perhaps not. Best to leave as many people out of this as possible, she supposed.
As the lid was lifted, Lee's eye widened and she pulled herself out of the seat. This wasn't just a rock! Her fingers shook a bit as she reached over to touch the spark. "You didn't tell me it would look like this..." her whisper held nothing but astonishment. Lee's fingertips never met the surface, and she hesitated at the sight of bubbling ectoplasm. It certainly didn't look like anything she should be rubbing her little fingers over, but with Miss Longway's words she nodded and dove her hands into the box, pulling the spark close to her chest.
Lee closed her eyes tight, and an... uncomfortable expression emerged as she began to think about the spark's purpose. I need a tutor... I need you to help me understand... She spoke to the spark, not bothering about whether or not she was doing it right. However, it soon turned into a deep reflection of herself, a criticism of why she'd need such a thing in the first place. Her expression changed, softened as she thought her final wish. I'm so tired of being stupid. Please help me. She was finished, but her eyes remained closed for a bit.
"Hello--?" a forceful voice came from the lobby. Lee's eyes flicked open, and she tilted her head as she replaced the spark into the box. "It's just my mom."

It pleased Longway to see she was impressed. Oho, an Essence Spark that didn't look even the least bit exciting had yet to be made -even if she thought Misha's resembled a messily melded chocolate poop and this one was truly beautiful.
Even Banning was aware of how sentimental the next scene looked. Ah, wonderful how some people laid bare their entire soul when attuning. He knew he'd made a good choice. Mellowed a little by the suddenly rather relaxed atmosphere, and not for a moment doubting the Purpose had been accepted and the Owner locked, he even let his posture slacken slightly.
Only to be roughly snapped back into regime mere seconds after.
Both him and his assistant-secretary looked up with two kinds of frowns. Banning's was a miffed glare at the noisy intrusion -the reason why he let Longway deal with visitors until he was required for important business-, and Longway looked displeased at the interruption of this moment. Already her first impression of Lee's parents wasn't too smashing.
Getting up with a firm burst of energy, Longway left the cosy saloon and stalked to the Lobby entrance to greet the matriarch.
"Good day, be welcome miss Katan. Your daughter has done well, and has just completed the required procedure. Everything went without a hitch." she halfway invited her to proceed into the lobby area, halfway showed her there was no need to stay long. Also she felt like she needed to include some praise for the young lady in her resume of the situation as well. Not many people that young would handle a situation like this without losing their nerve completely.
Banning remained seated in the armchair, disinterestedly glanced at the two adult females, returned to watching Lee impassively. Still, he raised one eyebrow just that little bit.
What a pain in the a** hm. Trust me, I know.

A cheeky white smile flashed to Miss Longway, followed with an "Oho! You're finished? Lovely." Mrs. Katan was a bit flattered by Miss Longway's use of the title "Miss" instead of "Mrs."; it had been years since she was referred to as a young woman. She put her hand on Longway's arm and leaned in close. Her tone dropped to a whisper. "I take it you dulled procedures down a bit for her? She doesn't take well to elaborate instructions." She gave a shrug and an apologetic expression on her daughter's behalf. She laughed a bit. "She'll be lucky to get into a state college at this rate." Mrs. Katan's whisper had grown to normal-conversation-volume, and she backed away as she chuckled.
Lee paid little attention to what her mother was saying, more interested in getting her away from poor Miss Longway. She grabbed the box from Banning's desk without a thought and nodded to him, hurrying out of the room.
"Lee! What was taking you so long?!" She masked her impatience with excitement as best she could. "Your father's waiting in the car, dear." Her mother headed back down the hallway without a goodbye to anyone present. Lee followed until suddenly realizing she forgot to pay. She reached into her clutch, pulling out the wad of money her father had given her before the family had left the house. She hurried back to Banning's desk, placing the cash down and lowering her head. "Sorry." Lee wasn't sure if she was apologizing for the money or the mother. She kept her head down as she ran back into the lobby and after her mother, the pretty little box cradled in her arms.

After that stormy exit, Banning and his two assistants were left in an odd sort of mood.
Longway had yet to release the breath she'd been holding, to hold back on a snarky response to shut the woman up or even simpler call her a bloated pufferfish to her face. Of course, she saw the downside to going on impulse and relieving the need to mock someone, and she'd held it back.
Misha wished miss Lee all the luck in the world, and even more courage. he could vaguely empathise.
"... miss Longway..."
"Hmm?"
"Make sure this money is overwritten on their bank account again, will you, we don't take donations."
"Sure."
Well, that had been an awkward ending and an awkward beginning, but all three were certain that this would eventually be alright. Good luck miss Katan. Good luck.
