Title : Lost and hurt

Description : It was a nice breezy afternoon twenty minutes ago, but right now, dark storm clouds are approaching. The heavy clouds loom over your head, thunder cracking, threatening to rain any minute. You hurry along the open park's pathway, trying to find some shades before it start to pour. As you pass by an open area, you suddenly notice something laying underneath a bench. It's a Golden Retriever! However, it doesn't look quite right. The dog seems to be in pain, laying there motionless with it's eyes closed, but you can see that it is breathing heavily. It looks somewhat dirty too, like it was wandering the streets for a while, but the strange thing was, the dog has a collar. As you ponder where is the dog's owner, a large raindrop just landed on your forehead. What should you do?

Requirements : None.

The weather was nice and windy. True, there were the dreary looking rain clouds in the ditance but they were still a long way off. It was the sort of weather that made you feel like walking; or at least be out of the house.

Shifting his wings slightly, Xiu glanced down at the name card Ethan had given Hazeline a while back and smiled. He would call Vyn. Hazeline was busy but said that it was alright if Xiu wanted to have a day out with Vyn, the rose raevan he had met sometime ago. Dialing the number, Xiu listened to the voice message on the phone before leaving a message of his own.

“Hello, this is Xiu calling. Mr. Ethan, would Vyn be willing to spend the day out with me? *laughs sheepishly* The weather’s too nice to be spent indoors and Hazeline’s a little busy at the moment but if we could meet up somewhere… the park perhaps? Thank you,”

Having called and left the message, Xiu waited patiently for the reply.

Another raevan was having identical feelings as Xiu regarding the weather. The slightly blustery day was perfect for outdoors activities, despite the slight chill in the air, and since Vyn had recently acquired a puppy that required plenty of walks the opportunity to go outside wasn't to be sniffed at. However, there was lots of preparation to be done before she could leave the house. First of all she had to get Thorn to stay still and allow her to put his lead on. Several times the black pug wriggled from her grasp as she fumbled with the lead clasp, but after some perseverance the dog was leashed - first step completed. Second on the task list was to gather everything that was needed for a walk; dog treats, a jacket to fend off the wind, dog poo bags ((Vyn had been surprised to discover that she was expected to clean up after Thorn - something that hadn't been told to her when Melisande had convinced her into becoming a per owner,)) and finally a mobile phone just in case Ethan needed to phone her for something. The cell was actually Ethan's, but when she took the dog walking he lent it to her whilst he remained at home, busily working on the computer...

All set for her excursion, Vyn opened the door and got into the lift, the pitch pup held snugly under her arm. However, the silver doors had barely shut when the phone in her jacket pocket vibrated; signally someone was calling her and making Thorn wiggle uncontrollably. Vyn sighed and struggled to both balance Thorn under one arm whilst grasping for the phone with her spare hand. By the time the slim-line device was flicked up by one elegant black nailed finger the caller had stopped ringing and '1 new message' was flashing on the bright screen. Selecting 'listen to message' Vyn held the mobile up to one of her sloped ears and floated serenely out of the lift as the doors sighed open.

Thank you,”

The shadow hadn't been planning on spending her time with anyone except the snorting puppy under her arm but as she exited the building and placed the canine on the ground she calmly shrugged her shoulders. Xiu hadn't been too bad to talk to last time. He'd liked to talk, something that Vyn wasn't very good at doing, but he'd been polite and pleasant none the less. However, the knowledge of how to phone back was something that she didn't possess and she winced as she flipped down the screen of the cell. Best course of action was to head to the park and hope that she could spot Xiu or vis versa.

Tugging on the lead in the direction they were heading Vyn murmured to Thorn; "Come on, we're meeting another raevan."

It has been ten minutes since he had last called Ethan and Xiu was beginning to think that perhaps the phone was not going to ring after all. Perhaps Ethan was busy or Vyn had not agreed to the walk. Well, he’d have to find another route to take if he was ever going to get out. Just as Xiu was pondering over the available options, Hazeline stepped out of her room with an empty coffee cup. “How did it go Xiu?” enquired the young woman as she made her way to the kitchen to pour herself another cup of coffee. “Has Mr. Ethan replied yet?”

“Afraid not, Hazeline,” said Xiu a little disappointedly. “I guess he’s busy or perhaps Vyn does not feel like walking,”

“Oh…,” said Hazeline sensing her raevan’s disappointement. Despite him being mature for his age, there was still a certain child-like quality about Xiu. Hazeline had to smile as she watched her charge try his best not to be bothered about the unreturned call.

“Tell you what Xiu, how about I take a stroll with you to the park?” said Hazeline setting the cup into the sink. “I have been in here long enough and could use a little leg stretching,”

“But Hazeline…,” protested Xiu weekly. “You are busy,”

“Yes, but you need to feed don’t you?” asked Hazeline as she took her purse off the table along with a set of keys. “I can’t have you starve to death in here. I believe that would be an even greater crime than negligence,”

“Thank you, Hazeline,” said Xiu visibly delighted. “I won’t take long,”

“Oh Xiu….sometimes…I feel like I am living with a teacher’s pet,” said Hazeline in an amused manner. “Not that that’s a bad thing but…,”

“But…?” asked Xiu a little worriedly.

“No, it’s nothing. Let’s go okay?” said Hazeline as she opened the front door.

The scarlet lead tugged eagerly in the Rose's grasp as she floated serenely down the street. Thorn was huffing and puffing as he scrambled onwards, sniffing at everything he came across. A piece of trash, a strangers feet, another dog. Nothing escaped his inquisitive nose. His buggy eyes were also gleaming with excitement; observing this new world that his owner was letting him explore. He still kept his ugly cute expression though, with his forehead grooved with wrinkles and his bright pink tongue lolling out and flopping with the bounce of his stroll. Similarly Vyn's eyes were also roaming around. However, they did not contain the same youthful exuberance as the pup's, instead the pitch depths regarded the park with mild indifference. She unlike Thorn was not wildly looking for new things to do and experience, instead she was looking for a particular white figure amongst the other strollers entering and exiting the park. Although, when she observed the flow of people, most of them were actually leaving the park.

She glanced up. The clouds were brimming in the sky and in not too long the first droplets would begin to fall. The weather didn't bother Vyn too much. Admittedly the shadow much preferred warm temperatures, but perhaps it was the flower in her that appreciated the feel of the rain on her pale skin. Either way, she drifted to just inside the entrance of the park and waited. If Xiu did arrive, she would easily spot him as he entered, if the young frei didn't turn up she would revert to her original plan and walk with Thorn alone. Vyn wouldn't blame him if he didn't meet her - she hadn't been able to phone him back after all.

Sighing and steering Thorn away from another dog owner's charge she allowed herself to glaze over - blankly observing the people occasionally trudging past.

“It looks about ready to rain…,” said Hazeline as she gave the gloomy rain clouds above a worried glance. “I just hope we won’t be caught in a downpour Xiu,”

“The weather should last,” said Xiu, a little reluctant at the prospect of turning back when they had just got out. Giving his stony gray wings a flick, the white raevan observed the moving crowd with interest. Although most of them weren’t equipped with an umbrella, it was clear that they were in a hurry to find themselves shelter before the first raindrops fell.

“Isn’t that…Vyn?” asked Hazeline interrupting the white frei’s thoughts. As he shifted his gaze towards the direction his guardian had indicated, Xiu was surprise to find out that Hazeline was right. It was Vyn. So his message was received after all. Perhaps they had called back just after Hazeline and him had left the house. Those things do happen but regardless, this was wonderful!

“Vyn!” said Xiu as he lifted his hand high and gave the other a friendly wave to attract her attention while Hazeline laughed at her charge’s enthusiasm.

Floating as a silent statue at the gateway to the park Vyn was becoming increasingly cold. The pleasant wind of about a quarter of an hour ago was picking up strength as the clouds overhead brewed and the blustery gusts tousled her wine red hair into an unkempt mess. The rose drew her jacket closer around it with a little huff - her leathery wings flicking, showing her obvious distaste for the cold turn in the weather. Where was Xiu? Surely he would be here by now... Thorn was sitting still by the bottom of her ribbon; the glow from her rune casting crimson light over his black fur. If the white haired youth didn't arrive soon the shadow would proceed to give the puppy a curt yet satisfactory walk before returning home where the temperature wouldn't give her goose pimples all over her arms. Her dog also didn't seem to like the temperature - perhaps why that was why he was sitting so quietly - and his tail was firmly lodged between his back legs, even more of a reason to get this walk over with. However, as she was about to turn and commence her solitary promenade with Thorn when her name was called by a familiar oriental raevan.

"Vyn!" He called, hand held high in an eager wave. Vyn warmed inwardly; the younger frei was as upbeat as ever.

The pup beneath her yapped at the approaching frei but Vyn silenced him with a gentle tug on the leash, hoping that he would understand that Xiu was a friend and shouldn't be barked at. The shadow then proceeded to mirror Xiu, raising an elegant hand and giving a more reserved wave back at him, although her face did not show the same eager enthusiasm that his did... But at least it wasn't as sullen and down turned as it had been during her cold wait.

As Xiu approached Vyn allowed Thorn to creep forwards, his puggy eyes marvelling at this new person in front of him. "Hello Xiu, this is Thorn..." She murmured, waving offhandedly to the pup who was sniffing cautiously in Xiu's direction.

Hazeline stood back and allowed her charge to float ahead to greet the other. It was good to see Xiu this happy; not that he was especially moody or silent; it was just that…Xiu seemed to be his happiest when he was with another raevan. Hazeline sighed. Back home, Xiu was a polite enough lad but he tended to give Hazeline the impression of a suffocatingly well mannered individual; especially when the housekeeper was about. With Joshua, Xiu made a good study companion and listening partner while with Hazeline herself, Xiu was…now that she thought about it, Hazeline wasn’t exactly sure what her relationship was with the white frei. He was polite and helpful but then again, that was how he generally behaved towards anyone and he certainly had never considered Hazeline as his mother. This was a troubling bit of news indeed. With other raevans though, Xiu seemed to loosen up a little and perhaps behave as the youngster that he was. Hazeline ran her fingers through her hair in thought. Others have complimented her on getting such a polite and easy to care for raevan but…was that how Xiu truly was? Or…

You read too many books one of her inner voice said flatly. He’s made from white blood and the soul of a temple guardian for goodness sake. What were you expecting him to be? A rock star?

True enough replied Hazeline to herself as she watched the two raevans intract; with Xiu doing most of the talking. Hazeline wondered a little about the rose raevan’s history and felt a pang of sympathy for Vyn. Was she forcefully taken away from her guardian or did she leave voluntarily? Troubling thoughts indeed…

Xiu meanwhile was observing Thorn with interest. Aside from what he has seen in books, Xiu had never seen a pug before and the general exclaimation of ‘cute’ and ‘adorable’ escaped him. Tilting his head slightly and in an attempt to stall the moment where he actually had to give his opinion on the pup, Xiu smiled and offered a hand to the curious puppy. “Thorn’s a strong name,” Xiu said at last; dropping the attempt to describe the pug. “Vyn must be very lucky to have someone to protect her, right Thorn?”

Up in the sky, the rain clouds emitted an ominous atmosphere.

“Xiu, we really need to head back now,” called out Hazeline as bolt of lighting flashed across the sky. “Vyn shall follow us as well; I will call Ethan later and give Vyn a lift back home after the storm has lifted,”

“Shall we Vyn?” asked Xiu over the roar of the thunder overhead. “The rain’s going to fall any minute and our home is close by,”

Thorn examined the outstretched hand with his bug-like eyes before tentatively sniffing. Finding nothing bad about Xiu, the puppy's withdrawn attitude and tucked away tail vanished and he eagerly licked the fingertips of the white frei as if he had know him his whole life and was greeting him like a best friend! Vyn was perpetually confused by her pet's open heartedness. He would like anyone so long as they were mildly pleasant to him.. Freely giving out his friendship and loyalties. He had been the same with the maid who came to clean the penthouse the other day; after yapping at her for a few minutes he was suddenly swayed when she had fed him a scrap of food and had spent the rest of the time that she had been there following her around with wide eyes and tongue lolling out of his mouth, much to her amusement. It made no sense to the reserved shadow who's own offers of friendship were held tight to her chest and extended to a mere handful of people...

Before Vyn could continue her musings on her dog's open heartedness Hazeline was rushing them to leave the park and return home before they got soaked. At this Vyn frowned. They had only just arrived at the park... It would almost be a waste of time to leave so soon. However, none of them had an umbrella to shield themselves from the downpour that was sure to ensue and the damp, cold sensation of being soaked wasn't exactly a favourite of Vyn's. Plus the girl was mildly interested in what the oriental raevan's home would look like... The image that was summoned to mind was some clean place, white like her own residence, with attractive Chinese decorations sparsely decorating the place.

Vyn nodded at Xiu agreeing to joing the pair back to their home - her rune glowing brighter, ready to propel her gently in the correct direction. The walk from the penthouse to park and then to Xiu's home would probably be adequate for the small canine... If not, he could burn any extra energy chasing the rubber ball that he had at home.

With a final friendly pat on the puppy’s head, Xiu raised himself slightly and began to lead the way towards the direction Hazeline was in and as the white raevan floated past a sturdy looking park bench, a small movement beneath the bench caught his eye. Hovering a little uncertainly for a moment, Xiu peered beneath the bench and let out a soft gasp. Apart from the usual odds and ends that consisted mainly of discarded tin cans, food wrappers and the occasional rubber ball, Xiu was surprised to find a dog lying beneath said bench and judging from its looks (despite it being rather filthy and horribly thin), it was no mongrel either. As though sensing Xiu’s gaze, the dog opened a golden brown eye and gave the frei a tired gaze. A feeble attempt at tail wagging was made before the canine fell back into its lifeless state.

“Vyn…,” said Xiu a little uncertainly “T-There’s a dog down there…,”

The thunder boomed overhead…

“We can’t just leave it can we?” said Xiu although his mind was already set. Crouching a little, Xiu managed to get his arms around the weakened dog and with little effort, the white frei was soon floating with the emaciated creature in his arms. His clothes had been soiled in the process but that was of a secondary concern to Xiu.

Meanwhile, Hazeline was impatiently willing the two raevans to float a little faster when of all the unexpected things that could happen, Xiu was seen crouching beneath a park bench. Surely the thunder could not have scared Xiu into hiding beneath a park bench could it? Worrying a little, the young woman half jogged, half ran to where the raevans were when Xiu emerged with a rather dirty looking dog in his arms.

“Oh Xiu…,” groaned Hazeline. “You know we can’t possibly bring that back to the bookstore with us,”

“Can’t we make it an exception this time Hazeline? Please?” pleaded Xiu as he held the scruffy bag of bones and fur. “This poor canine won’t survive the storm in this state and well…it has a collar on it,”

“A collar does not signify much,” said Hazeline firmly but there was uncertainty in her eyes; an opening in which the white frei was quick to notice.

“If I can’t get through your human logic, can’t I at least appeal to your better nature?” asked Xiu and as if emphasizing the white frei’s point, the first few raindrops began to fall.

"Well...I...ah...," stammered Hazeline as she teetered between agreeing with the white frei and keeping the bookstore animal free.

Realizing that and further prodding from him would probably cause more harm than good, Xiu gave Vyn a sideways glance as though willing the rose frei to speak up in his favour.

Vyn… T-There’s a dog down there…

The rose frowned as Xiu alerted her of his discovery. What was it doing underneath a park bench? Where was its owner? What were they to do? Her dog was also unsure how to precede, his happy demeanour fading replaced again by the wary stare and whimpering tail. Vyn could understand her pup’s reaction though. This new canine was rather mangy; its fur was matted and filthy and its body, despite being well bred, was unhealthy thin – Vyn likened it to the humans she had seen occasionally sitting on street corners with a chipped mug in front of them collecting money. Ethan had called them ‘tramps’ when she’d asked about them and had fervently advised her, a sneer of disgust on his face, to steer clear of them... Did the same apply to this dog?

However, before she could drift back from the dog, just in case it was like a tramp and shouldn’t be meddled with, Xiu had knelt and scooped the creature into his arms. It gave no resistance and Vyn realised just how helpless it must be – Thorn always wiggled and attempted to get away from her when she went to pick him up; this stray must be absolutely exhausted not to even protest to a total stranger. Yet despite this pity that was fast overcoming her she kept her distance, watching through dubious black eyes as Xiu’s clean white clothing was smeared with grime.

I.. I do not know...” Vyn uttered as Xiu looked to her for support. She was just as much unaware as to how to proceed as Hazeline. Similarly torn between the desire to keep the dirty creature away from her and sorrow for its miserable condition. However, as another crack issued from the heavens and the light drizzle became progressively heavily, pattering on the path and the leaves of the nearby trees whispered in the wind Vyn decided to side with her fellow raevan... “Perhaps we could take it home and clean it...” She suggested, tugging her jacket tighter around herself to shield her from the increasingly wet and cold weather. When the dog was clean and perhaps fed they could decide what the next best step was.

Xiu had said there was a collar on the dog, if it was like Thorn’s collar it might have the name and address of the owner... Until they located the owner she was sure Thorn would offer the other dog his company, just as soon as he got over his initial wariness – which in every other case hadn’t taken long at all. But it all depended upon Hazeline’s choice and she waited to see what was said.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 18, 2010 10:54 pm

It might have been Xiu’s plea getting to her or it might have been Vyn’s suggestion to take the poor dog in and treat it. It might even have been the weather and it gradual shift into a stormy gale. Whatever it was, it made the guardian nod and instantly all the tension and uncertainty was gone. Pursing her lips, Hazeline beckoned to the two raevans and began jogging to the nearest sidewalk they could find. From there, they could make their way towards the bookstore by running from one awning to another. “Quickly before the weather gets any worse,” said Hazeline with a slight pant.

Having gotten his guardian’s approval, Xiu was more than happy to follow Hazeline as she jogged along the paved sidewalks across the park and in no time, the white frei found himself within the quiet confines of the bookstore. “We live upstairs,” said Xiu with a smile at the rose raevan. “Now let’s hope the housekeeper isn’t home or we’d be in trouble with her.

Thus saying so, the white raevan carefully floated up the stairs and stealthily towards the living room; all the while checking for the presence of the feared housekeeper.

“She isn’t home,” said Hazeline with a touch of relief in her voice as she pointed to a Post-it note stuck on the table. “Apparently she forgot something at the store and has gone to get it,”

“That’s great!” said Xiu with obvious delight as he placed the soaking dog upon the wooden floor. “I’ll get some towels for us and the dogs as well, Vyn,” said Xiu before floating off in search of them. Hazeline meanwhile was heating something up over the stove. It smelled rather like stew. “Some leftovers,” said Hazeline in case Vyn was curious. “Thought it’d work for the hungry thing. Would Thorn want some with biscuits? I’ll prepare some tea as well,”

A few minutes later the white frei returned and handed the rose and his guardian a clean towel each. Tossing an older and slightly tattered looking one at Thorn for him to do with it as he pleased, Xiu then turned his attention to the stray. The poor thing was shivering and the white frei quickly rubbed it down as best as he could. “I wished I knew how one should go about doing this…,” said Xiu with a shake of his head. “He’s still shivering…,”
