The night had proved to be a unique one. From meeting the chatty Nandeli to the Headwoman, who had given him a through 'inspection', along with a string of rules longer then a dragon's tail. The inspection had entailed lice, which he was told currently infected many of those living full time in the Weyr along with the occasion traveler. After hearing that news, Dorinelic had gone to bed with his hair stuffed full of oil and herb. Having a beetle crawl about one's person was along, having tiny blood sucking mites? No, he'd take the beetle.
And the rules...no deserting riders, no going into private weyrs, no flirting with riders you took a fancy to, (at this rule he got a harsh glare. Shards, he hadn't even done anything yet!), no this, no that. Overall, many of the rules weren't quite unlike his home, so, Dorinelic didn't feel so badgered of his station when the Headwoman drilled them into his skull in record time.

Morning had come faster then what Dorinelic was used to. Normally, he would be up before dawn broke, but, now, he was up just a candlemark after. But...it was strangely nice to get up to the sun and not to the black sky. The hammock had also been a pleasant surprise. A quick wash of his hair ridded his scalp of the oil and herb mixture, (which had left quite a pleasant scent, strangely enough), proving to prevent any lice from trying to infest his person.
Grabbing his yet unopened pack of wares and supplies, the journeyman smith set out to a nice sunny nook in the bowl, away from the bulk of the weyrs and main cavern entrances, but close enough to give the passing person a quick glance. He also was settled quite nicely by some of the other trademen, none of which were smiths, (as small advantage). Opening his pack, Boot scrambled away into some loose rocks as Dorinelic began to lay the various objects along the dusty earth, giving only his finest wares protection from the dust with a thin blanket.
Kicking off his shoes as he normally did, the heat began to fill the air, as various people came over to begin the usual morning inspection for later purchases.

L'thor was bored. This seemed to happen to him quite a lot. He needed things to do, but his weyr was clean, Raith was sleeping, there was nothing that needed mending, and he didn't have drills until later. As such, he wad wandering the bowl aimlessly, looking for anything even vaguely interesting to do with his time. River fluttered in the air above him, swooping and diving and looping in his usual ecstatic manner. Dusk, the more sensible of the two blues, rode peaceably on his shoulder.

He had been walking for a little time when he suddenly felt River tugging at his attention. Shiny! He saw shiny! L'thor groaned and summoned the flitt back to him lest the little kleptomaniac make off with something. Still, shiny sounded more interesting than anything else in the immediate vicinity and so he turned in the direction his little friend's head was pointing. So it was that L'thor came upon the young smith with his wares laid out before him. Humm, this was an unfamiliar face. He couldn't be a Candidate or he'd be busy with his chores... Just a new resident then. Still, new people were always fun; he liked to meet new people.

Offering the young man a smile, L'thor walked over to him. "Good morning, I don't think I've seen you about before, you must be new at the Weyr. My name's L'thor, glad to meet you." From his shoulders, River and Dusk added their little voices to his greeting.

No amount of old bed furs would keep his wares free of the constant dusty winds. Dragons, people...it seemed like no matter what was going on, dust would come about and git into his items and well...Currently, he was cleaning the same amulet he had been cleaning for the last candlemark. Each time he finished, another wave of dust would hit and, the process began once more.
The sound of a voice made his frustration lessen. At least people couls still see his wares from under all this grit.
"Hello. Dorinelic is the name, and smithy work is my craft. Care for something in particular this day?" He offered his hand in formal greeting, but drew it back once he noticed that it was covered with dirt. "Sorry, bit more dusty then I'm used too...oh hello." He just noticed the two small flitts by L'thor. He father had taught his to greet a person's companions, either they be small or large.
"I don't have a wide variety on hand, but, I can fit in some custom work before I'm off. I specialize in intricate designs and finishing work if your looking for something more unique."

L'thor smiled at the introduction, and both River and Dusk chittered happily at having been acknowledged. "Nice to meet you Dorinelic; I can't say I had anything at all in mind wandering out here but..." he knelt down, careless of the dusty ground, to better inspect the young man's wares. "You have some quite lovely pieces here," he complimented with a smile. He did need to get hold of a nameday gift for V'kain fairly soon, this looked like a good opportunity. The work, as he had said, was rather good but there was nothing present that really grabbed him as something his friend would like.

"Can you make goblets?" he asked impulsively, recalling V'kain mentioning that he'd always fancied owning one but never got around to spending the marks on himself. As usual. V'kain never spent anything on himself unless he really had to.

"Goblets can actually be very low priced, given the right design." He winked, maybe he would make a custom sale today after all! "Or I can do much more intricate work, but, it costs a bit extra, nothing over the top of course." And the moment of truth. If the man stayed he'd most likely be making a purchase, if he left he was looking for the sake of looking. "Is an event coming up that you need to have a gift ready for? A particular lady in mind?" The idea of making a goblet for a woman struck Dorinelic as abit odd, but, he shrugged it off. Maybe thats just the woman's tastes.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:20 pm

L'thor chuckled and shook his head; a gift for a woman? Not likely! "It's a nameday gift for a friend of mine; he just wants something fancy to drink out of, so intricate would be good..." Trouble with such an impulsive decision was he hadn't the faintest idea of what sort of fancywork to ask for. Humm. L'thor rubbed his chin thoughtfully and folded himself into a comfortable lotus, reinforcing his instruction to River; stay put! Not your shinies!

...Ah; flitts, now there was an idea! "Do you think you could do an embossing of a fair of firelizards?" From the look of the work before him it shouldn't be too much of a problem for Dorinelic, and he was sure V'kain would like such a design. He'd always loved flitts but, yes, never got around to spending the marks to get one for himself. Silly man; there was his next present lined up if eggs at a reasonable price ever appeared at a suitable time.

"...." Dorinelic stared hard at the two small flittss. Both were similar enough, and that meant less memorization. Digging the image of the flitts into his brain, he tapped his chin. ".....I think that would be quite possible. Flitts may be small, but they aren't as detailed as say, a citrus tree laden with birds with a field of berries," he chuckled, "That is a detailed job. Now, if I did just flitts, the goblet will remain, for the most part, unadorned. Most of the time people ask for a crest or emblem. If they don't have one, I usually ask that they give me an idea of what they, or the gifted, likes. Local plants, animals, any motif. So long as I have a reference, I can etch it out." He had done a few goblets, but none with flitts on them. Mostly, just ones with local plants to accent the drink.
Grabbing a small bag, he poured the contents into his hand. Scrap metal, of diffrent size and coloration. "These are the various metals I can get for the work, if you provide gold of gems, I can encrust those into the gobelt as well." He held them out for L'thor to inspect.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:52 pm

L'thor peered at the scraps thoughtfully; his family had seldom traded in metal goods but he knew enough to be aware that it was decent quality stuff despite being scraps. "Pewter I think," he decided quickly; silver or something would have been lovely but there was no way he could afford such luxury. In any case, pewter had a lovely sheen when you polished it up. Also, if he did somehow pull marks out of his ears and go for silver, V'kain would have his hide for spending so much on a gift for him.

"Anything else you'd like me to specify?" L'thor asked with a questioning tilt of his head. Nothing sprung to mind immediately, but Dorinelic might have more things to ask him.

"Well, how many flitts? Do you want the around the rim of on the handle? Will they be circling or forming a shape? Do you want me to add any name or symbol? There are a variety of ways I can create this. Oh not to mention the handle. Do you want it think like a flute or the traditional wide handle?" Already Dorinelic was beginning to bore. Many customers just assumed that the smith knew what to add, and then when presented when the finished product they hiss and yowled about how it wasn't what they asked for. Hopefully, he didn't have to deal with that here.
"The options are only as limited as your coin. If you would prefer I go and design it myself, just give me a cost limit." Leaning back, Dorinelic's mind began to picture various ways to craft the needed goblet.

Haha. Seemed there was a lot more to think about. L'thor chuckled at himself briefly and shook his head. "Right, I hadn't realized how vague I was being... Not a huge number of flitts I think; anywhere between five and ten or so, whatever you think would come out looking best... Just placed on the main, umm," he frowned at his lack of eloquence and gestured vaguely, "the main goblety bit. Sort of randomly placed, as though they're playing chase or something. Wide handle please, and if you could put some sort of textured effect on it rather than just leaving it smooth that would be good. Beyond that... just what you think would work well really," L'thor said with a smile and a nod. "I can tell for the things you have laid out here you know how to bring out the best in any design you happen to be working on."

"....." His mind's eye began to pick out a design, crafting it in his head before he did so with his hands. "How about a scale texture, to go with the flitts? I can fit about 7 of them around the cup, in various patterns. For the fact its not over intricate or embellished...One mark, counting the cost of materials?" He smiled in the sunlight. Now the fun part haggling. It was always fun to see how long someone would think he was worth and how high he really was...but...it was always a matter of perspective. "I also am to assume its for another rider? If so, do you want me to color the flitts as the color of his dragon?"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2009 2:13 pm

Humm. A mark? Not unreasonable for good work. He could haggle on principle he supposed but... "Yes, a scale texture sounds good," L'thor said with a nod. "Just leave it the colour of the metal please." Humm... Should he bother? He might be able to get the price down a little; Dorinelic didn't have that 'final offer' look on his face... but a mark was a good offer to begin with. Well, he didn't want to get out of practice haggling for gathers, he supposed.

"Three quarters of a mark," he said with a nod, "plus a ride to and from anywhere you like on my dragon." Some people would consider that offer worth more than a quarter mark, some would consider it worth rather less. it would be interesting to see where Dorinelic fell on that scale.

"....." The offer for ride where ever he pleased...and back to boot! How many riders would offer that up, especially for the low cost of a quarter mark? Still... Counting his wares, plus the two riders...Could a dragon deal with that much weight? And even if it could, the difficulty of his pack might hinder the flight. Also counting the fact it was just a day's walk back to Ista Hold, and the boats cost just about the same for trip to Southern Boll Hold...But to ride a dragon!
"....If your dragon thinks it can carry us, plus my gear and wares, I'll be happy with the offer, but if your dragon declines, it will be a full mark." He smiled and winked. "I don't want to hinder you companion, plus...a quarter of a mark can still get me where I need to go next, with out the..." he waved a hand in the air, searching for the word. "...awkwardness of flying for the first time."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 10:08 am

L'thor grinned and nodded, holing out a hand to seal the deal. "Raith should be able to handle it, but if not then I'm happy to pay the full mark." There, gift sorted, it was nice to have everything prepared in advance... Well he didn't have everything prepared yet; there was still the party to organize without V'kain catching onto what he was up to but he usually managed that without too much fuss. So... invite people, get in good wine, see about arranging nice food... Yes, all quite achievable.

"So," L'thor smiled as Dusk hopped down into his lap for attention, "now business is sorted out, tell me a bit about yourself; I don't meet many smiths around the Weyr." It didn't seem he was really interrupting anything too much, and if he just wandered off with his purchase arranged, he'd have to go and look for something else to do. He hadn't been meeting with much success before he'd spotted Dorinelic, so it made sense to linger at least a while.

The invitation for a conversation had Dorinelic a bit...shocked. Most of the time people would pay and then leave, or they would just hang about to watch him work. "Well...I'm from Keroon Hold..." Dorinelic didn't really have that much to say about himself. He was a journeyman smith, what else did anyone need to know? Grabbing a small pencil and notepad, Dorinelic began to sketch the goblet. If anyone else were to have seen his sketch, they would have been confused, as the marking were rough, jagged, and at best, dark. To Dorinelic, he could see a sketch within the mess, and it was one he liked. "Also, forgive me, I tend to work right after an order is...fresh." Looking up, he focused on the small flitt, turning the page and sketching out the details.
