Who: Varun, Kinsey and Phiel Where: The local supermarket When: Late afternoon, early evening
Kinsey wasn't entirely sure where Varun had picked up the shopping list; it was still pretty tricky to decipher what her young Raevan was trying to say sometimes. He was picking up words by the handful now, mimicking sounds and selecting words in contact. 'What' was still his catchphrase, but used with less frequency with each day. Kinsey had been caring for Varun for less than a month and already his vocabulary was growing in leaps and bounds.
But we digress.
His intelligence and creativity did not explain this shopping list. All Kinsey grasped from his convoluted explanation was that the food was for Dr. Kyou. She'd never met the man personally, but if Varun really wanted to, she didn't see the harm in getting his groceries for him if he didn't have the time this week. Of course, she needed to supervise, Varun's reading skills did not match his speaking.
"Kiiiinsee." Varun tapped the list, looking at the first item. "Say what? Say what!?"
"Easy, easy there, tiger. 'F-l-o-u-r'. Yeah?"
"F-l-o-u-r."
"Yes. Flour. Okay? That's for baking stuff. Like bread. And pie. And cake."
"I see," said Varun, though Kinsey kind of doubted he did. Nonetheless, she allowed her Raevan to slowly lead her down the aisles, allowing him to check each sign for the word 'flour'. "Here? Yes."

Meanwhile, in the dry goods aisle, Phiel was pondering the merits of a new brand of coffee; one arm held a carry-basket full of the necessities he had gotten to, which included teabags, bread, milk, a fresh container of chocolate syrup, miscellaneous vegetables and two small heads of lettuce, wrapped in plastic, sitting on top of several frozen meals for one. Fish food was also perched precariously in the basket.
His head was down, and distractedly he read from the back of the package, his brows furrowed in concentration.

It didn't take long for the aquatic Raevan to spot Phiel. His fins flared immediately and he puffed his chest, nearly knocking Kinsey over in his attempt to make himself larger than the other male. He said nothing and did not approach, simply scowled and watched for a few moments, making a point to get in front of his guardian. "Mine," he said softly, pushing an arm out to the side to keep Kinsey behind.
"Varun, what the hell are you doing," she hissed, pushing herself off the shelves. She was too busy trying to fix the display of sugar she'd knocked over when her Frei shoved her to realize said Frei had started to float away.
Varun approached Phiel in silence, floating up behind him as quietly as possible. The Raeven evened out his breathing and folded his bright yellow wings behind. He flared the fins on his head before finally reaching forward, brushing his pale hand against Phiel's arm as he plucked the can of fish food out of his basket, bringing it closer to look at the picture.
"What?"

Phiel gave a little noise of surprise at the sudden brush of hand against his arm, and he actually physically jumped, his heart skipping a beat. But when he heard that familiar 'what', he relaxed by degrees, catching in a deep breath and peering at the canister of pellets. "Good afternoon, Varun," he said with a small, sheepish sound. "That is fish food," he said. Amusement flickered across his features. "For Blue. What are you doing here?"

"Bluuuuuue", Varun crooned, impossibly pleased with the memory of the little beta fish. But where was he? Still at home, probably. The Raevan gave an exasperated sigh, drifting towards Kinsey as he scanned the shelves with the thousands of words he didn't know. "Flour," he informed his guardian's friend curtly, wings flaring little as the Frei grew more and more irritated with his inability to read anything.
Kinsey, having finally stood up all the bags of sugar, walked over to the pair briskly, still a little red from her run in with the baking supplies. "Hey Phiel. We're just going grocery shopping. Varun seems to feel like it's some sort of epic quest he needs to fulfill."
The redhead snorted at Kinsey, reaching over to put the fish food in the shopping basket she was carrying. "Flour," he insisted, tossing his head and motioning to the wall of baking supplies. "Flour, for list."
"Yes, yes, your list, I-" Kinsey frowned and pulled out the container of fish food. "Is this yours?" she asked, handing it over to Phiel. She certainly didn't put it in there.

A brow rising, Phiel found himself wearing an amused, bewildered smile as he reached up and retrieved a bag of flour, offering it to Kinsey as he accepted the fish food. "Yes, that would be mine, unless Varun has taken up eating fish food. Good afternoon, Kinsey," he murmured, a little bit drolly, tucking the little yellow canister down into his shopping basket.
"Depending on what you're looking for," Phiel said with a smile, "it could very well be an epic quest."

Varun made a soft hissing noise when his Kinsey handed over the fish food, giving her a dirty look when Phi put it into his basket. "Blue," he muttered, fins shuffling as he peered around. He was torn; his guardian was making nice with The Enemy, but on the other hand, The Enemy was on his side of the argument. The logic here was faulty. Scowling, he simply brushed his hair away from his face, giving an annoyed grunt when the long red strands wouldn't obey. Hair was much more trouble than it was worth, in his not so humble opinion.
Kinsey, oblivious to Varun's battle with the hair, simply smiled at Phiel and tried to figure out what to say. Awkward... "Oh. Yeah, I guess so. Let's see, what else is on this list? Watermelon, tomatoes, milk, Indian spices, hazelnut cheese cake?" She frowned a little. "And a lemon meringue pie. Which Varun is insisting we make, by the way."
"I. Pie? Varun. Varun makes." The redhead peered at the couple, flaring his wings again. Wrinkling his nose, he pointed to the list. "Watermelon." A melon of water? What did that look like? "Show."
The Raevan drifted over to the listed and pointed, making sure to keep himself between Phiel and Kinsey all the while. "Show Varun."
Kinsey smiled. "Of course!" she replied, pointing the second item on the list. "W-A-T-E-R-M-E-L-O-N." She spelled it out and looked over at her charge. Teal eyes were incredibly focused, the youngling staring hard at the letters and the way they were put together.
"W-A-T-E-R-M-E-L-O-N. W-A. Whaa? Yes? Like this. Yes?"
Kinsey nodded eagerly. "Yes! Just like that, Vars. W-a sounds like 'whaa'? Shall we go look for it?"
Yes! Go forth? Yes!" And without another word, the seasonal Frei floated down the aisle and turned left.
Kinsey stood in silence for a moment, waiting until she saw Varun float by in the other direction. "...he has no idea what a watermelon is," she confided in Phiel, allowing herself to look at him just a little longer than necessary before blushing. "Uh, come on. We better go get him."

"... Lemon meringue pie? And watermelon?" Puzzled, Phiel glanced after Varun as he drifted past, shaking his head. Still, he chuckled softly as he heard what she had to say, only halfway aware that she was looking at him, as he was trying his best not to blush at her as well.
Why did he always react that way, damn it? He tamped down a dull sort of huffiness, and chuckled softly. One gloved hand fell on her shoulder gently. "Aye, we shouldn't let him get too far, then," Phiel said with a chuckle.

"I don't know. He found the list. He said it was for Dr. Kyou?" Kinsey shrugged. If the man needed to be fed, far be it from her to starve him. She still wasn't sure why her redhead had answered the call of duty, but she wasn't going to question that, either. He needed more...redeeming tributes, to even out his sticky fingers and that nasty temper. About to sigh, the young woman's breath caught in her throat as Phi's hand settled on her shoulder.
It took her a moment, but eventually, she recovered. "U-uh, yeah," she replied, flashing her friend her best smile. Kinsey brushed dark hair behind her ear, red gems glittering in the artificial light. She felt like she was blushing as brightly as the family trademark but fortunately, her darker skin kept most of the blush hidden. Swallowing, she nodded down the aisle before starting off slowly, hoping to keep Phi in tow. "So, how are you? Back to work?" Varun would be fine for a moment or two. She could catch up with Phiel.
"NO. MELON OF WATER? FOR VARUN. NOT YOU."
...or not.
Kinsey's face fell as she pushed her hair back with a small sigh. Flashing Phiel an apologetic look (and not without a bit of regret), she trotted down the rest of the aisle, turning in the direction she saw her charge float last. It only took a moment to find him; bright yellow fins were kind of a dead give away.
"VARUN FINCH. YOU LET GO OF HIM RIGHT NOW. DROP HIM. DROP HIM."
Varun released the man in question from his locked jaws and peered over at his guardian. He shrugged and held out his hands, mildly displeased his challenger was already scurrying away. Some challenge. He offered his hands out to Kinsey, as though this was proving some sort of innocence.
"Melon of water? Wanted it. No. For Varun, not him. Varun's melon of water. Watermelon. Varun's.

Listening, Phiel chuckled softly. Well, and he'd never heard of such a strange list of things, but his own list was probably strange to some people, so... With a small ahem, he looked down at her with a small smile, hand withdrawing as he tucked it into his pocket, following behind Kinsey at an easy pace. "I am back to work, though the boss says I'm to take it easy for a few more weeks -- "
but the sound of Varun's voice was one hell of an interruption. He blinked, and couldn't help a little bark of a laugh as he headed after, shaking his head as he caught sight of Varun.
" -- oh good lord." Phiel shook his head, looking exasperated.

"Good lord?" Varun gave Phiel a puzzled scowl. "Hardly," the leviathan scoffed, pleased he got to exercise a word he'd recently picked up from Kinsey's vernacular. The watermelon man was anything but a good lord. As far as he knew, lords were noble and bossy. This man was a coward and he was whiny. And Varun didn't like him, so he couldn't be good, either. Snorting a little, Varun tossed his head and floated over to the large stack of melons, picking one up before floating over to Kinsey's friend.
"Hold," he instructed Phiel, bristling a little as he floated back over to Kinsey. HIS Kinsey. (His Kinsey who was trying to instruct him to use his manners, but he was willing to overlook this if Phiel understood that Kinsey, like that watermelon, was his, and while he may hold the watermelon with Varun's permission, it was just for now, because what was Varun's was Varun's, as the watermelon man had recently found out.)
"What's left?"
"Just the lemons, Varun," Kinsey replied, looking a bit harried. She'd get the rest by herself; the seasonal Frei was going to get them kicked out of the store if she didn't get him to settle down quickly. "L-E-M-O-N. You know what that is?"
"L-E-M-O-N. Le. Le? M-o-n. Mon. Le-mon. Lemon. Lemonlemonlemon."
...
Kinsey sighed as Varun whisked off towards the bright yellow fruit, spelling his new word to himself and shook her head.
"I can't help but wonder if he's supposed to be like that."
