While he had been told that Ista Weyr was just a day away from the port docks, no one had bother to tell him that it involved climbing up a mountain side and cutting through a rain forest. Granted, he knew the place was tropical, but this heat! God! Half way to the Weyr and he had striped down to his shoes and cut his leggings to shorts. If this was common weather for the island, he might not be staying long...or ever come back! "Shards, why didn't I opt for the burden beast?" Panting, Dorinelic grunted as he lifted his heavy pack above him, to what seemed to be flat ground where he could rest. "How much mo-" His self rambling were cut short, as his eyes took in the sight before him. The Weyr. Looking about, he noticed a large gathering of what looked like other journeymen. "Excuse me, but where might I go to find a room?" As he finished his sentence, a dragon sounded from a cavern above, making his words almost whispers and the other traders went into a nearby cavern. Turning about, hoping to maybe see someone else, he noticed that it had indeed, gotten dark, and almost no one was left outside. It really had taken a full day. "...Isn't there anyone who can tell me where I am supposed to go?"
((Hopefully I didn't get anything wrong.))

It seemed that the Headwomen was eager to get Nandeli out of the kitchen tuber peeling corner and out into the world. Last week she'd been collecting clothes for mending, and this week she had been on laundry duty. She couldn't really complain about it though. The girls who did the washing up were just as gossipy if not more so than the kitchen girls, especially when it came to who was found between the bedfurs with who.
Nandeli and several other girls were taking the final load of washing down when she spotted what appeared to be a very lost soul. Judging by the state of his clothes he was probably a traveller. Had he really walked here? One of the girls seemed to think so, and was whispering to her friend. Perhaps he was a lone craftsman, come here to look for work. He was certainly old enough to be a journeyman, and his knots weren't visible from here. The whispering abruptly ceased when the young man asked a question to the general masses. After deciding that he didn't look too dangerous, Nandeli took the initiative.
"That depends on what you're looking for sir!" she called, and beckoned him over.

The shock of a voiced cause Dorinelic to jump slightly as he turned about. "oh, um hello." Grabbing his things, he made his way to the small gaggle of girls. "Yes well, I'm Dorinelic, a smith appre-" He paused remembering his new life. "Journeyman. I've come looking to sell my wares but, seeing as its almost night, I would much like to find a room and rest. I...I didn't quite expect the harsh conditions of travel." He grunted as he let his pack fall back to the ground with a clatter. Sure, nothing would break or bend, but, it still made quite a bit of noise. "Do you know who I would speak to or where to go? I've never been to Ista before and...its all quite new to me." New, and not exactly pleasant. he'd much rather be in the snow then this tropical heat.

Smith Journeyman? They'd be waiting for one of those. "It's nice to meet you Dorinelic! I'm Nandeli. People around here just call me Nan. Whatever suits you best. Are you the one they sent up from the hall to fix the shutters? 'cause they keep falling down in some of the deeper caverns and frightening all the children. They're starting to think that there's somebody living down there who's going to eat them. Oh, and some of the locks aren't working right, so you should definitely go and see the Master about—"
"Nan, 'e's looking for a place to stay for the night," one of the girls interrupted, giving her companion a nudge with her elbow.
"Oh." Nan blinked, but seemed to recover herself rather quickly. "Well what you'll need to do is see the Headwoman about that. I think she's down checking the records or something. Always hard to find that one. She's got a lot on her plate right now though, so we shouldn't complain. Anyways, we have to pass by there when we bring the laundry in if you want to come with us? Are you any good at folding?"

Shards, this girl could talk! And talk she did. It took Dorinelic a few seconds to register all of the information. "No one sent for me. I came here from Keroon Hold. But, if there is work for a good pay, I won't mind. I can use some extra marks." He hesitated, thinking about what else the girl had said. "If you can point me in which direction to go, I'm sure I could- laundry?" The other question ran into his head. "Well...I had to do my own laundry typically. So...I think I can fold well enough. After all, when you travel, folded clothes proves to create less hassle and more room in one's pack. Why do you ask?" Something told him that the question was a baited one.
((I just picked a hold that would probably have a trading route with Ista... OTL))

"No one sent you? How come you came all the way up from Keroon then? Work can't be too bad for a Smith out there. I always thought they were in pretty high demand no matter what. Especially a Journeyman. And you're not a Candidate, otherwise the dragons would have brought you. But there's always work to be done, and I'm sure you could find something to do. The Master Smith should be easy enough to locate in the morning. Be a bit hard to find him in the dark." She flashed Dorinelic a grin.
At his response to her question she clucked her tongue thoughtfully. "Well, I suppose everyone can fold bedfurs. The ridiculously meticulous riders always re-fold them anyways so it can't hurt. Come and help getting these ones off the line." Nan made her way towards the furs that were pinned neatly to the clothesline. "And why? Because if you want an escort from us then you'll have to help us get our jobs done. The faster we're finished, the faster we can leave and the faster you can find the Headwomen. Unless you'd like to just go wandering off on your own? Which, I mean you could do, but the Lower Caverns can get pretty confusing sometimes…"
She apparently thought that he was going to accept her proposal of fair trade as she was already taking one side of the bed furs off the line.

Internally Dorinelic winced as she mentioned the fact that smiths were in high demand....yet he still moved. Still, she didn't know, and did not mean an offense...but the fact still cut him to the quick. "Yes, smiths are readily needed anywhere..but, I didn't want to have to deal with my parents. They kicked me out anyway, so, I though it might be best if I left altogether." Not to mention the fact he had taken all of the items he had made, along with a fair share of marks to see him elsewhere. Stingy old man had kicked him to the curb with not a mark to his name. How did he expect Dorinelic to ever survive? Bah, still, he knew to remain at the hold would have cause him more trouble then it was worth. "...I may have never been to a Weyr before, but I know that to go alone in unfamiliar caverns tends to be a bad idea. I'd rather not run into a nest of tunnelsnakes." Pushing his pack to the side, he made his way to the clothes line. Tugging on one bedfur, he didn't bother to unlatch it, as it snapped right off under his hands. Folding it simple enough, he tucked in the final corner, crating a triangular shape.

"Aaaah. Problems with the parentals?" She'd heard her fair share of stories about overbearing and demanding parents, so it didn't surprise her that this Smith had decided to move. Enough of the Candidates had reason to leave their families in search of a better (or at the very least more exciting) life at the Weyr. Why Dorinelic had chosen to come here of all places was a mystery, but she could pry into that later. There were many other questions she had to ask first. "Kicked you out? Not very nice of them, especially since you don't look like a troublemaker. What did you do, if I can be so bold as to ask?"
At the mention of tunnelsnakes Nandeli chuckled. "You'd have to try pretty hard to find tunnelsnakes here. Most of them run away when they hear people coming, not to mention a lot of the Weyrbrats set traps for them wherever they can. Still, I can't blame you for not pressing your luck. Take the other side of this one, will you?" She held the side out to him and stepped back to accommodate the length of the bed fur. "I'll come towards you and fold, then you to me, and then I'll handle the rest."

"My father kept pressuring me to become a better smith, and to do more work for less, or even for no pay at all." Dorinelic tugged on the bedfur again, making sure the creases were not visible. "I didn't mind having to work but, some of his demands became...aggravating, so, I tended to ignore his words and go my own way. After all, The most decorative thing he could do was a large shield insignia, so, he tended to make me do anything smaller then his ego..." Grabbing the edge of the corner, he pulled the bedfur away, finishing the folds. "Which pretty much meant anything smaller then a large shield insignia." Grabbing another bedfur, he sighed. "I didn't want to become a journeyman, its not a bad life I mean but...I just think that there has to be something better out there, you know?" He offered her the corner, to begin folding once more.

Nandeli listened quietly as they worked, adding more and more folded bed furs to the pile in the basket. "That would explain it. Not much you can do about overbearing parents except leave them I guess." Having been under Foster care ever since she was old enough to be away from her real mother, she didn't have the same sort of family problems that other Candidates did. Her Foster Mother didn't even get angry at her anymore, too busy with all the other little ones running around under her care. There were certain benefits to being born at the Weyr.
"Well what would you do if you weren't a Journeyman Smith?" So perhaps he had come to the Weyr in hopes that he would be Searched! It wasn't the best tactic – especially since they were nearing one hundred Candidates these days – but if he could Impress a dragon it would save him from having to go back to being a Smith. Still, if he didn't make it, that would be all he had left. Not too many crafts would take a twenty year old apprentice. "You want to be a dragonrider?"

For a second, Dorinelic pondered the idea. It would be something new and quite a change of pace from his current life... "Depends I suppose. It would be nice to have a try at it, but, you have to fight the Thread, and not to mention that you will then forever be stuck as a rider and you'd never have anything else to aspire to be. But...still, you ride a dragon, and share a bond that most people will never know. With anything, good comes with the bad, even as a rider." He shrugged as he moved to the next blanket. "If I could do anything...I don't know honestly. I might try my hand at another craft...maybe explore...Who knows." Another shrug, this time into silence.

"Well you can't really just try out being a rider!" Nandeli said with a laugh. "But if you hang around the Weyr long enough you might get Searched. We aren't exactly looking for new Candidates, but if a dragon points you out to his rider then you could be invited to Stand. You never know. It might be what you're looking for." He was the first person she'd ever met who said that he'd wanted to pass up being a dragonrider to be a craftsman or an explorer. Maybe it was just because she was used to talking to dragon-loving candidates. Unless…
There was a small pause, before she said, "It was the gay Flight sex thing that put you off, wasn't it?" Nan had a feeling she had hit the nail on the head. She was good at knowing these sorts of things. Ask anyone.

"Hm, still, you have to fight Thread at tha-gay Flight sex?" The statement question made his face go pink and he almost dropped the folded furs. "Um...I'm sorry but...what do you mean? That's the first time I've ever heard of..Flight sex." He felt a bit odd. After all, this girl must be a few years younger then him. How did she...Where people so unabashed about such things on Ista?

Haha! She'd got a reaction! That was clear-cut proof that what she'd said was true. "Flight sex. You know, when a green dragon gets ready to mate, she flies up and has all the other male dragons chase her! Well, blues and browns mostly, since bronzes usually try for the golds. Anyways, one dragon will catch the green dragon and then the two riders will sleep together as a result." Nandeli smiled her mega-watt grin at him as she added the last bed fur into her basket.
"Well, looks like that's the last of it." The other girls picked up their baskets and so did Nandeli, balancing it against one hip. "You ready to go? Need anything before we start?"

He wasn't quite sure if he should be shocked, appalled, or fascinated. "Well...I really don't know. I mean...I knew how greens would get the blues and browns after them but...why would the riders have to sleep together couldn't they you know...go with a diffrent partner? I mean..uh..." He blushed. This was a bit of an odd conversation to have on his first day in a Wyer. Grabbing his pack and a bundle of the furs, he grunted as he felt his arms strain under the added weight. "I'm fine its just...Even if a couple wasn't gay...why would the riders have to sleep with each other? Thats a bit...forced, right?"
