Everone,

I'm very interested in creating my own Steampunk-style clothing, and I have some experience with the Lolita style, which has very specific guidelines and 'rules' for it's clothing (shape and length of the skirts, amount of skin allowed to be shown). I was wondering if there are any such guidelines for Steampunk clothing, because I want to do it right.

Also, if you could tell me why it is that goggles are so popular with Steampunk, I would very grateful.

Thanks!

Nope. No guidlines at all. I've seen very elegant, Victorian outfits that employ floor length bustle skirts and petticoats, and I've seen outfits with bare midriffs and cut-off shorts. It's really up to how you interpret the style. As long as you're comfortable in it, you're doing it right.

And I don't know why the goggles are so popular. They just are.

I'd like to think that the idea behind goggles is that you're up for anything- and hopefully that anything involves a airship battle or five.

Same with what xxrackellaxx said. There really aren't any guidelines, the whole idea behind the movement is victorian industrial DIY, heavy emphasis on the DIY. Although, I must say, garb for the gents does seem rather limiting at times.

It seems to help to be a lady when it comes to steampunk, I think. We can have pretty skirts or pants or both at once if need be.. ><

I actually don't understand the goggles myself..but mine are really heavy!

There aren't any hard and fast rules for Steampunk. That's why I love it so! So much more room for creativity and individuality. Dealing with Fashion Fascists gets old quickly.

So for general guidelines:
Victorian is a good starting point. Queen Victoria's reign was over 50 years. Quite a lot of fashion to choose from there. I always enjoy a sense of playfulness or whimsy to Steampunk. Gears and cogs as working or decorative accents are common.

The above general guidelines are really, really general. Do not take my word as final, for the love of tea!

About the goggles, don't know why they are such a Steampunk basic but how could you not love them?

This is sad, but true. Today's men's formal wear is based off of Victorian men's formal wear. And boy did they have a lot of rules for what you could wear and at what time and depending on where you were on the social scale. It's a bit sad because it seems like up until Victorian fashion men were able to be quite the peacocks in their clothing.

Haha, it's such an oxymoron for some of us to like lolita and steampunk. Lolita has very strict rules about dress, otherwise it's not loli, and with steampunk you can wear almost anything.

The goggles must stem from the DIY aspects of steampunk. In steampunk world, everyone is a pirate, scientists, inventor or something. They're always tinkering around with things so wouldn't they need the googles?

i think that there are two reasons for why goggles are so popular...

1. they are practical for the airship captain, and airships have been quite a large part of the stereotypical steampunk world. therefore people imitating that fictional style use the goggles

2. they are awesome, and are a damn good way to make an outfit scream steampunk (as it is the stereotype everyone associates with steampunk, like Goths with White makeup and Bleeding mascara, and Punks with brightly coloured mohawks)

Thanks so much, guys! I appreciate you all taking the time to answer me.

It's pretty awesome that Steampunk is so free-form, but it's also a little bit intimidating. (For me, rules help me avoid making something that looks stupid without realizing it.) I do plan on getting into it, though- it's just so awesome!

And I have noticed the rather limited male wardrobe, which really sucks for me; I like to wear formal-ish men's clothes. I'll try to re-invent, or at least re-think, menswear for Steampunk...

Thanks again!

I have decided the reason for the goggles is mostly so you don't get bugs in your eyes when flying in a zeppelin or hit with sparks or dangerous chemicals when inventing something weird.

I am still trying to fashion my... well... fashion. I think just looking at pictures and LOTS of them helps me. Because I may not have hard and fast rules, but I can have TONS of Inspiration!!!

If you need some sort of guidelines, I would suggest you take the lolita ideas and rules that you already know and modify then to suit your steampunk designs. I've seen quite a bit of good looking steampunk-lolita designs and outfits.

Thanks so much for the suggestion- I think I'll do just that. I hadn't even thought of it, but it makes great sense. ;^^

I certainly agree with the lack of male steampunk fashion. A plus for the gentlemen is the fact that styles haven't changed too much. I can head to the local resale shop and still find a nice looking tweed jacket, vest and slacks. Anything with tails however would get me to a bridal store/prom shop.

The difficulty now however would be to find a decent cravat and high collar shirt.

Thankfully steampunk has that marvelous "punk" at the end so dreadlocks, dreadfalls and yes the occasional fauxhawk is worn.

Now finding a local haberdashery is a challenge too. talk about a dieing trade... thankfully, you can find a decent top hat or bowler for about $30.US online

There are designers out there that are finally starting to create affordable steampunk fashion too (I'm happy to say I work for one of them) Gotta love the freedom to create!

For my steam punk i like to take inspiration from everything. Most of all I like to combine that deep browns of the western steampunk with the colorful blues, yellows, reds, oranges, ect, of eastern culture. even some very montern eastern patterns can make your browns and greys pop. I love Indian and Japanese patterns most of all.

I think that it looks really good to bring other cultures into your punk, that way it looks like you have been travling!~ blaugh
