dustfeather

A shadow moves through the forest.

A young girl, about seven or eight, is moving through the woods in the mid-afternoon sunlight. She travels down a small, almost invisble deer-track made through the woods - and yet wanders from it every so often, as if she was certain of a clear purpose and destination, but had quite forgotten what it was supposed to be.

She's a young thing, skinny - but not beautiful. Nor even pretty. She's plain, with ragged black shoulder-length hair that looks at least neatly cut, and gray-green eyes that are too big for the rest of her face. She slouches as she moves along, with a timid, quiet step. Her clothes are made of leather - a plain vest and pants, with white and light blue beads along the edging of the latter. She carries a small bag beside her, also made of leather...and each time it jostles against her side, she startles, as if she had forgotten that it was ever there.

As the afternoon sun wanes, her step - lacklustre from the beginning - loses any hint of energy. As she skids down a sharp incline, she loses her footing and lands inelegantly at the bottom. Rather than get up, she simply lays there...as if moving were too much of an effort now. She curls into a fetal little ball, unmoving.

Silence.

- or not. Something's crying nearby, faint, but human-like in sound. It annoys her greatly, but she doesn't have the energy to open her eyes. How long is it since she last heard a baby's cry? Only a day...it seems so much longer than that. Shaman. She was supposed to be seeing the village's shaman. It seems, suddenly, like a whole waste of effort. Pointless. She cannot even bring herself to think about what might have made the cry. It's too mind-draining right now.

But the cry continues. Ancestors! With a feeling curse that she had heard her uncle use after returning from a poor hunt, the child moves around into a sitting position, crossly and stubbornly keeping her eyes closed, and gets to both feet, steadying herself against the trunk of a tree. Only then does she open her eyes, frowning. Best go just see what it is, then. She doesn't have any willpower left to argue. The child moves forwards, shuffling through the underbrush...

...and trips on something small and fuzzy.

Dagi
A lithe orange form runs swiftly though the forest. He had been sleeping quietly in his den when he had sensed a new smell. There had never been a scent in the forest like this one; it certainly wasn't a wolf... Or another fox... Or a bear... Or a deer.. Or anything else! So his curiosity had gotten to the better of him and he decided to duck out to explore. He was gaining on the scent fairly quickly; it was none too fast. The scent of a wolf was also laced in there but it was the mysterious one he was after. After a few minutes of chasing he had caught of to it. What an odd creature it was! A beast that walked on two legs... It only had fur on its head; it was probably cold right about now! The fox crept closer to the figure; keeping his distance. If the beast was a dangerous one he didn't know it... He guessed he's find out soon enough.

dustfeather

The child sinks to the ground, legs not holding her anymore. The bundle of fuzz moves in protest at the touch, it's head wiggling upwards. Dark blue eyes rimmed with gold open curiously, blinking at the new thing before it. It yawns, showing gleaming white teeth.

The child shivers, as if struck by a sudden gust of cold wind. The eyes - those eyes - ....

She shakes convulsively, eyes unblinking as they stare at the oddly striped wolf puppy. For having such a bland expression before, her face seems lightened now, by a multitude of different expressions...but it's difficult to pick just one. Fear, guilt, wonder, grief - all transfix across the child's face.

She reaches out a trembling hand to the pup's fur.

"Honi." Wolf.

The puppy flinches slightly at the contact, a slight growl bubbling in it's throat. Young as it is, it is still wild - and the human hand is withdrawn. The puppy seems to accept this, and, paradoxially, snuggles closer. The girl allows him to curl up in her lap.

"Shilah." Brother.

A dark pitch-black eye watches the duo sarcastically from a treetop nearby. Wings rustle. The eye moves towards the fox below, wickedly glinting. A soft, low cackle can be heard.

Dagi
Brown pointed ears stood on end in response to a cackle from somewhere in the wood; from where the kit could not locate. The language of the two legged thing nor the wolf was familiar... as usual. Cept neither of the newcomers talked alot which was nice... He didn't have to think. But that cackle from above had spooked him; he liked having everything visible so he could manage an escape plan if need be. His light eyes scan the trees above but still there is nothing. The fox slinks quietly into the safety of a near-by bush. It shades him from the treetops slightly and makes him less stressed on the whole situation. With his ears still perked he turns his attention back to the two legged and wolf duo.

shia-san
A large shadow is casted apoun the lands as the black winged creature comes to an astonishing hault. His eyes peer down to a pup, standing there, obviously looking for something. His feathers ruffled slightly, as his black beak clicked.

'Dear pup. What are you waiting for.' The crows beak clicked quickly as his feet clung to the branch in which held him up. It was rickety, but sterdy enough to allow him to float above the pup.

His wings flexed slightly as his peircing eyes peered down towards the pup. It was most definitly a female....timid female....

dustfeather
"Doubtless," Comes another dry voice from somewhere above both crow and fox, "...the sly one is fascinated by the human chick and wolf cub, and perhaps hoping for an easy meal to be found nearby." An avian shifts in the gloom from above, but the only thing easily seen is one wicked eye, which glints nastily down at the duo. The voice is tinged with a sardonic tone, as if it's owner found something dreadfully amusing. But the eye shifts swiftly back towards the child in the underbrush and the tiny bundle in her hands, and the creature hops out onto a branch.

It's another crow.

It's never still - restlessly, almost ceaselessly moving about. Instead of pitch black, it is instead a very dark gray - wearing the ring of white around it's neck like the edge of a cloak. The sunlight flicks across it's feathers, catching upon it's eyes and revealing them to be a deep crimson hue. Less a bird than a small devil clothed in one, the crow eyes the human female and wolf male down below her with ill-concealed anger, hopping about with pent-up frustration at the sight. "Caaak!"

Chibi-baka-chan
He was cold. Scratch that, he was cold and

Dagi
The small fox jumped out from his bush as he heard a voice from above. Another forest creature and from the sound of it... A crow. Finally something he could understand. He turned around; plopped onto his haunches; and squinted up into the canopy to see the crow.

"Whacha blabbing on about Mrs. Crow?" (Your crow is female right Dusty? n.n')

His brow furrowed in thought on the subject. Crows always tried to sound like they knew exactly what they were talking about; like they held the knowledge of the universe. But he knew that was wrong. It was foxes that were the smartest of course!

"What'sa human?"

shia-san
The crow rolled backwards onto the bark of the branch. His eyes slanted with fatigue. 'Caww' he squacked towards the other crow. His eyes blinking ever so slowly.

His feathers fluffed up. Ruffling slightly as he snugged into his chest. He looked towards the wolf pup. His mind racing. This was an odd pup. He didn't pay to much attention to the wolf though, his attention was diverted by the large beetle that crawled near him. He watched it, his yellow eyes peering at it with interest. He inched his way towards it. His claws clinging to the next inch of branch slowly. He quickly reached the bug.

It's dark blue exterior glistening by the sun. His black toung hung out slightly as he then snapped. His wings fluttered, as the snow on the branches rustled and fell harshly towards the frozen ice land. He chomped on the bug, its hard shell making it difficult to crack through. He swallowed it with joy as he flapped his wings, bouncing towards the end of the branch and letting out a 'Kree' sound.

dustfeather
A red eye swivels back towards the other avian. A chortle drops from the crow's beak. "That one's as greedy as a wolf," She says, amused. "And with an appetite and manners to match!" Her mood seems to swing from moment to moment - like herself, never settling in one place. She jabs towards the wolf pup and human child.

Below, the child clings to the wolf pup fiercely. It has fallen asleep, warm at last, and quite unconcerned with it's position in life. I cannot be a human any longer. I bring only sadness to my tribe. Those eyes - my brother must have been reborn as a wolf. Therefore, I must become one. This odd track of thought flitters through the child's mind in a few seconds, imprinting itself with determination. She curls up, back against a tree, and sighs - content for the first time since Wolf Song's death.

But she is still alert to the world around her. As Sekani emerges from the trees, the child's eyes open from their mere slits. Another - and yet, this one doesn't have the same eyes. He doesn't remind her of anyone she knows...perhaps a true wolf? Or an ancestor? Or some other former spirit? Not knowing how to speak wolf through body language, she remains silent, quickfire eyes watching him curiously and quite intently, but not directly - that much she knows. A direct look to a wolf is a direct threat.

Chibi-baka-chan
Sekani blinked slowly, the movement putting emphasis on the strange swirl marking over his right eye. The wolf had never paid much attention to it, seeing as it didn’t hinder his sight, but it was something to be recognized by. But Sekani didn’t concern himself with such at a time like this. He was fascinated by what he assumed was a hairless wolf, who was older than him. It was incredibly interesting. He had never seen a human before, and therefore had no knowledge to make him afraid of the girl. Laying his ears against his head, he tucked his tail submissively, edging towards the human and the wolf that was cuddled in her lap. Perhaps it was the mother of the little wolf. Maybe it would accept him?

dustfeather

The crow lets out a shriek of laughter. "Krah! Saucy, too, I gather. You sound just like an offended wolf, after having a kill stolen from under his nose. Peace, brother bird."

------

The child notes the marking with bridled curiousity, eyes roving over it. She's never seen that sort of marking on any wolf - or dog - that she's ever seen. She knows about dogs. Her family has had several, mostly for work or guarding, none for companionship. The concept is foreign to her. Dogs, like horses, were working members of the community. Still, she's seen enough about them to know the very basic behaviors. She offers what sounds like a welcoming whimper to her ears - though, for all she knows, she could be expressing fear, which would be a very bad thing to do, even with a wolf pup - curiously watching Sekani out of the corner of her eyes. The puppy in her arms moves sleepily, letting out a quick little sigh.

shia-san
Fatuous didn't mean any bitterness from that comment. He lifts his head, bobbing it slightly. 'Er..' he say's simply. His feathers flutter slightly. 'Yes...peace.' He peered to the other. His claws drive into the barks 'Fleash.' He squaks towards the crow. 'What are you doing here. In the midst of winter, when the snow grows high as the day's go by?' he flaps his wings, making it to a higher branch, but ever so closer towards the other bird. He had to bend fowards on the branch, having a good hold on the tender tree.

dustfeather
One could ask you the same question, yes?" The beak snaps down, the creature's good humor waning. "Waiting and shivering the winter away - kiyah!" She dismisses it with a slouching posture, wingfeathers rubbing together to produce a dry, rustling sound. "There is so many more things of interest - " She jabs her beak towards the odd duo below - "...out."

-------

She must've scared the other puppy away - in a flash, he's disappeared. Disappointed, and wondering mutely what she did wrong, the girl sighs, yawning. It'd be nicer to get to a safe place for the night. Somewhere at least a bit more sheltered from the wind. She prods the puppy with a finger, ruffling his fur.

The wolf pup snaps back, in protest, not wanting to leave the warm burrow he's discovered: but when she mock-growls at him, he shifts himself fairly fast, hastily rising onto all fours and blinking at her. Shouldering her pack, she moves off through the trees, not looking back until she's a good distance away.

The puppy's still standing there. He looks puzzled. His new pack member was leaving him! Panic consumes him, and he scampers off after her, nipping her firmly on the heels: playful enough for a wolf pup, but painful for the child. She rubs her ankles, hobbling after him through the brush.

dustfeather
The female clacks her beak together. If crows could snort, she'd be doing so now. "Krah. Stupid greedy male, what you know about forest happenings? You care only about filling your own belly." She glares at him frigidly, offering him the odd 'hiss' that always sounds surprising when coming from an avian's beak, but is quite at home to it nevertheless. She takes off in a sudden flurry of dark gray feathers, to land at a higher branch, sprinkling snow down below. Of the human child and wolf pup there is no sign - but it doesn't look as if they'll escape Pauwau's attentions that swiftly. Even now, she looks in their direction.

shia-san
The black crow's eyes wished they could roll about his head. He ignored her. One quality males did well when angry. His wings fluttered slightly as the sudden movement caught his eye. He slowly caught on to what the bird had said. 'Well i'll have you know, I have no other mouth to feed.' His eyes narrowed with rage and sorrow.'I have no other I care for, so I need not feed another bird that i clearly dont know so they may eat and I suffer and starve.' he paused. His eyes lowereing slightly, 'So you have no position to say I am greedy and only wish to feed my own mouth when my mouth is the only one I truely need to feed' his head shook as he flapped his wings.

'And you.' he spoke slowly. In a deep dark tone. His claws landing once more on a branch a bit closer to the female bird. 'You...speak of greed. That I wish to fill my own belly. But you seem alone as well. Although you may not eat in public, you must devour all the food you can scavage while alone eh? no bird, 'specially Crows femme, can ignore a peice of food that lies there...waiting for you to eat it?' his voice still darkened. He cocked a brow. Let this tempermental bird speak now. He will find a comback.

dustfeather
The puppy is sleeping. He's been sleeping for the past twelve or so hours, and doesn't show signs of waking, curled happily up in the little hollow of his odd packmate's arms. No worry that she's hairless, and might be a little colder than a normal wolf's fur - she smells familiar, and is familiar, and is his only packmate, and he's fiercely attached to her. It's not her fault she was born hairless. His beath is slow and deep, and it's obvious that he won't wake unless deliberately provoked.

The human girl, however, is as wide awake as the pup is deeply asleep. Her eyes are open, and she quietly berates that she wasn't given better eyes to see in the dark cavern with. It's slowly gotten better...but compared to her wolf companion, her eyesight - and nose, and ears - are worth little to her. She's curled up with her arms around him, and her skin feels warm where she's holding him...but everything else has slowly gone numb from cold. She lets out a short little sigh. She'll have to find something warmer, so that she can have a skin like a wolf. An elk pelt, maybe, or something similar....

Thalion
"I can hear you shivering..." Hinto said quietly into the silence. He had been awake as well, leaning his back against one of the walls of the den and thinking quietly to himself. He had heard the girl shivering for some time now- it was quite cold but he dressed himself in his favorate furs- a fox fur and an elk skin that kept him terribly comfortable even in a cold winter night, "You know- I can let you wear my coat for a while. I don't mind... rather than hear you shiver like that all night, I can't sleep." IT was his way of trying to be nice while still keeping his stubborn "macho" tone to him. Still, she was a girl and the elder had told him to be especially nice to girls.

dustfeather
The gray-green eyes fill with venom as the young girl glares at the boy. She doesn't attack him, but the look is clear - she certainly believes herself above his 'rank' in the 'pack.' It's quite possible that she's gone a little touched in the head after she found this puppy, or even before...clearly, she's not going to back down on her assertion that she's a 'wolf.'

"I don't need anything," She snaps, curling around the puppy more. "I ain't cold." Wolves look out for themselves. If they can tough it out, she can tough it out, at least until she finds something more suitable to wear.

Thalion
"Ah hah, your shivering voice and breath says otherwise." He obviously didn't see the sharp looks she was giving him but her tone was enough to betray her feelings towards him. It was ammusing really, he liked this girl for the challange she posed to him. "My these furs are warm...." He rubbed his face in one of the rabbit-skin mittens that he had worn, "So soft too. I'm burning up just sitting here. If it weren't for those shivers of yours I'd be able to sleep quite soundly, highness." He chuckled, laying his stick to the side and began removing the elk coat and fox scarf, shaking out his hair as the static clung to his black locks and a few of the ordiments clinging to his hair. With a huff he tossed them in the direction of her voice, "There, just feel them them."

endejester
The slight sound of Balan's "wurrf" sounds more muffled than it did before...the sound of hoof scrapping arouss the floor sounds even strange till he comes clearly into sight with the haunch gripped in his teeth...his neck crained up and to the side to keep the meat form turing into a less than palatable bruised mass....he slowly lowers it between them...his neck acheing but with a slight wag of his tail to see them awke.

dustfeather
Her lip curls scornfully at him, and she snorts, indignant. "One hunter has to stay awake at all times in case of danger, not sleep like some stupid wet-behind-the-ears puppy," she retorts to him, sharply. She warily watches him as he removes his coat and scarf, and snatches them up. Perhaps he'll see this as a victory, but her mind has already leaped ahead - and he's made a sorry mistake if he thinks he's ever going to get them back again.

But something else comes into view, and she lets out a happy help as she spots Balan coming in, carefully bundling up Shilah, who makes no more than a puppy-whimper, and yet whose twitching nose suggests he may be up in a minute to investigate the good new smells, and prancing over towards Balan, lightly rocking on the balls of her feet as she crouches down near him in greeting.

endejester]Balan can't help but wag his tail at the behavior of this female...he should not like her so very much...but its so -cute- the way she behaves...not at all like the smelly lye and fat sented humans that trapsed the woods where he once lived.
He lifts his head flinching only slightly at the severe crick in his neck and touches his cold wet nose to hers. [/quote]

[quote="Thalion
"Then you sleep. I'm guessing it's night- your eyes won't do any good on lookout anyway." He huffed, reaching for his stick and pulling it close to him as he curled his knees into his chest. Gods she had every right to be shivering as much as she had been- it was cold, even in the den. He had heard the sounds of the wolves moving off and leaving them in the night, he wondered if they had been leaving them for good until he heard the other's return and the pup's greeting to it. He wasn't sure if it was the wolf he had taken to, the one he had named "Silk" because of his fur. His head tilted to one side as he listened- something stunk... a lot. "URng..." He reached up to cover his nose and mouth, his brows raising slightly, "What is that?"

dustfeather

The nose is rather cold and wet - like a healthy wolf's should be. She scrunches up her own nose a little momentarily, for it's a little too cold for her taste...but she starts to grin at him, before belatedly realizing that, in wolves, that might be contrived as a threat. They do bare their teeth, after all. Big, sharp teeth. Therefore, she compromises by reaching a hand up and scratching the soft fur on his neck. "Aya," She says softly, smiling.

A smile which dissolves as she glances back towards Hinto. "It's breakfast," She says, simply. "Hurry, or there won't be any left by the time the others decide they're hungry. Soft Fur was nice enough to bring part of his kill back to us." She doesn't express the sight dissatisfaction she feels at being treated like a puppy, but she doesn't comment on it, lightly drawing her small knife and starting to carve a piece of the meat away.

The striped puppy's nose gives a particularly violent twitch, and he gets to all fours, ears perking forwards. His chubby little body moves towards his packmate and Balan, reserving a light 'woof' for the former and a respectful tail-wag for the latter, before diving into the food, growling at anyone - wolf or human - that gets too close.

endejester
Balan sits and watches with amusement as the pup digs in as though he alone could devower the haunch.
"You indeed must be thier alpha, eating first after all...But I need to speak with you...about what we shall do with you and your two legged friends. Things in this area are...not as peasceful between those on two and those on for legs."

Thalion
"Ki.... Kill? Wait a minute- as in meat? Like something? Like... not cooked?" He shuddered a bit, pulling his shirt closer to him, "N-no th-thank you. I'll look for.... uh... something in the morning..." He hated sounding picky but he had been tricked into eating raw meat once- rabbit meat. It was squishy and bloody not to mention wretched in both taste and after effects to his stomache. That was a week he wished he could just shake from his mind as easily as he could shake his head in an attempt to clear such thoughts. He could almost feel the slimy, moist, warm meat in his mouth again. It made him feel just a bit queesy.

dustfeather
The striped pup looks confused a moment as he's halfway through bolting down a strip of meat, his expression slightly perplexed - as if, while eating, he was not used to thinking tremendously. He wags a tail in affirmation of Balan's words - a sort of 'alright, after supper' casual gesture - then gets back to the all-important business of eating. Clearly, in this pup's mind, food comes first. One can't do anything without the natural fuels of the world, and one never knows where one's next food source will come from. Eat first, tackle other problems later. It does manage to penetrate that his two-legged wolf packmate was not welcome...but does not overly-impress him much. It's their loss if they don't want her as a helpful packmate.

She sniffs at him, but with less rancor this time. "Dolt, of course I'm going to cook it. I've tried getting down raw meat before. I can't." Her face falls a bit, as if this was yet another thing that made her look like just a puppy among wolves. "If you want to make yourself useful, get firewood." It's not much of a request...it's more an order.

endejester
Balan watches the pup with an glowing sorta of pride in his chest...he can't even begin to explain it...but watching them makes him feel...so alive...
"Ah...what wouldn't I give to have been in your paws."

Thalion
Hinto sighed and pushed himself to his feet with help of his stick. He would be lying to not admit that he was tired and the trip outside where it was probibly -more- cold than it was in here was not comfroting a bit. Either way he gutted it with little more than a grimmace of displeasure at his task and made his way towards the mouth of the cave, his stick feeling along the ground. The ground stopped where the sound of rushing water became loudest- he could feel the spray of water on his face and arms. It was freezing cold! How did the wolves get in?! Turning back in the direction of the other's voices he made a pleading expression- almost asking them the question on his mind with his eyes. Seeing as he'd probibly only get another nickname and a shove to his rear he pressed on, feeling along the ground. There was a thin ledge from the mouth of the cave, under the waterfall that must have led out. He carefully pressed his back against the wall of the cave and slid along the ledge- his stick feeling along the ground in front of him until finally his now rather damn mocisons met with the even more unpleasent damp coldness of snow that had gathered on the ground. With a silent curse he walked on, feeling along the snow in front of him and listening even more now. Who knew if there was anything out here? It was night hours- the silence betrayed that well enough. He'd never been out in the night before- the bitter cold biting at his explosed flesh gave him every reason not to be. "Bossy girl..." He muttered, more for the comfort of hearing another voice than anything, "Thinks she-s-shshe's so important because sh-sh-she's a better wolf. "

His stick met with a few things along the ground- rock, rock, rock- tree.... He sighed, bending down to push aside snow and feel along for sticks, "They'll all be damp anyway, we've nothing to dry them with... stupid bossy girls." His numbed fingers managed to trace out a few sticks and in time he managed to gather an armful of damp but decent-sized twigs. Returning to the cave was no easy chore, his feet were damp and cold so he had less of a feel for the rock and nearly slipped under the raging waterfall a few times but managed to catch himself just in time. The cave was a good deal warmer than outside- a warmth he woudln't soon learn to take lightly. Throwing the sticks to the ground and walking back to the wall his teeth chattered out between silent mutters and groans. He was damp now on top of being cold.... not to mention a bit snappy as a result.

endejester
Balan watches the strange gathering of sticks with a feeling of...immanent discomfort...what was WITH these two leggers?! Didn't he have enough wout with his wooded wisker?!

dustfeather
Wind Song doesn't even watch him go - she's engrossed in the task at hand. Weak wolves, to her way of thinking, make dead wolves. Blind Hinto may be, but if he's going to be her packmate, he'd better work as much as she is. Somewhat sloppily carving a hunk of meat - any and all of it, even the less tender parts that a more sophisticated person might cut off - she drags it away from the two wolves, neatly pushing it up onto a small natural, shallow shelf in the cavern that she had discovered earlier. Now it won't become a meal for those that become hungry...and perhaps it'll hopefully dry out a bit, too. Not bothering to whip her bloody hands off, she starts to clear an area on the floor free from brush, and expertly sets up a little area for a cooking fire. This is one of the things she can do...females in her tribe were expected to do the cooking even at an early age. It'll be tough to start a fire in the damp...but it'll be better than nothing if they can get it going. She's eager to feel a warm meal in her belly, and she looks enviously over to Shilah, wishing she could devour it as he can, bones, skin, and all.

She's just finished when Hinto comes back, and she greets him with a faint perk of her head, before snatching the sticks up and sorting through to find the driest, hunkering down to set them up amidst the rock. She reaches deep in her leather pack - which had sat, disregarded, for quite awhile - to pull out flint and tinder, and starts the methodical and perhaps long process of starting a fire going.

Thalion
"I never did get your name by the way, highness...", he grumbled, pulling his shoes from his feet and setting them aside- they were no good to him damp and cold. "My name is Hinto." He surely hoped she wouldn't giggle at his name like the others had. Being named simply "blue" for the color of his eyes hardly seemed fair to him, "One day I'm going to earn a new name, I want to be called something that's strong or smart. Might be nice you know." He began wringing out the water from his shoes onto the mossy ground, shivering at the cold licks of water trailing from inbetween his fingers down his palms and arms.

endejester
Balan started at the first sign of smoke as the tinder finaly began to catch... Hed never seen behavior like THAT before...He'd seen fired...bur never imagined that humans could deliberatly START them! He'd imagined them only to keep them like they kept some animals.
"She...started it?! Stars and moons...I never imagined..."

endejester
Balan eyes the Fire suspiciously and the way it is fed with the sticks...the wold outside smells strongly of an apporoaching storm.

His ears flick..."I'll be back...just a moment" He says to the pup..and slips out past the water fall...he snuffs around and finds more of the fallen branches that the blind boy brought back to the cave and carefuly makes his way back...his mouth aquardly crammed with stucks...
These humans were so tricky to take care of...

dustfeather
The girl remains near the fire, curled up with the fur elk skins that the other human boy gave her - and isn't getting back, whatever he may think. She warms her hands, regretfully wishing she had real fur.

The little puppy sits by the fire, but not too close...otherwise, he finds himself getting too hot, burdened by the excess weight of a natural warm layer. He glances back towards Balan, curiously, nose wrinkling in and out, but accepts the comment without worry. As the older wolf comes back in, he offers a bit of a wag to him, which is slightly difficult to do while seated but he manages it anyways. At least Balan is mindful of his pack's needs.

"What's your pack like, Balan?" He querries, curiously.

endejester
My Pack? Its....Well...its...its a good back...we have a strong leader...with strong opinions.
We have good hunters...Im afraid Im not one of the better ones"...He affords a wan wag of his tail
"Ive my own den...a bit away from the others...under the roots of this great old tree...where it shattered the smooth stone. He pauses and stares at the small captive fire.
"There are no two legs in my pack though...two legs...are...normaly raised in defferent packs...most two legs...try and hurt us. That...is why I fear...I fear if I'll...I want to bring you...back to my pack...if you would be alright with that...but I don't know if..." He trails off and sighs...

dustfeather
"I'm not yet, either," The pup says seriously, as if failing to notice the age difference between himself and Balan. He lapses into silence, however, as the older canine continues, then idly reaches up to scratch behind an ear with one backpaw.

"That's okay," He says, complacently. "Kaya and I can get by on our own, we're a pack together." And perhaps that little boy is, too, Shilah isn't certain. He seems to be, ever since Kaya took his coat and established rank. That, Shilah thinks, is impressive - he's never seen anybody steal a four-legged wolf's coat before.

But he has slowly realized that his own opinions of the two-legged wolves are not other wolves' opinions over the past day or so. That does not bother him unduly. He is a wolf - of the intelligent sort enough to love and worry over a pack member, but inhuman enough to let it work itself out in the course of things.

endejester
Balan pauses to stare at the pup. "Its.....the winter is coming though Shilah...Im worried that you...and....your PACK may...not be able to find enough food...Thats...all...the Two leggers may hunt you down if your not careful.....He shakes his head...if My Pack leader -would- take you in...I would be most honored to have such a....wide thinker in the same pack as myself...if not...then....then I'll do my best to help you...find alies for the winter."

dustfeather
"The strong live, the weak do not," The pup says, as if quoting a proverb. His striped face and crystal-blue eyes watch Balan curiously. "Wolves don't hunt wolves, unless they're on territory they're not supposed to be on," He says, regally. "Kaya and I would keep to the no-wolf zones, we're not stupid." This skewed logic is said with a slightly miffed tone, as if the puppy were berating Balan indirectly for doubting him - and his odd 'packmate.' But he seems to accept that last, ear flicking. "Alright, Balan."

endejester
Balan Sighs: "Shilah...Its not that I....Im not against you pack mate but there are many who....see....two legged...wolves as just...another kind of...of "Not Wolf" The kind of two legers who...lay traps and hate the four leg wolves.

dustfeather
Inside the cavern, the puppy shakes his head. "That's just silly. Kaya's my packmate. She's a wolf." He glares at Balan, ears flattening. "She'd never do anything like that."

endejester
Balan: "......"

"I KNOW she wouldn't....but she has two legs and some of the OTHER wolves who are...NOT here right now...MIGHT think she was one of the others who DO that because...they DON'T know her...Because...these are troubled times and many of us come from places where trust is hard to come by"

dustfeather
"No wolf is that stupid," Shilah says in that naive, but perfectly reasonable tone, as if he thought that Balan was getting into a fuss over nothing. The innocent crystal-clear blue eyes blink slowly once, twice. "Nobody attacks a preybeast before knowing the whole situation, do they?" He querries, rhetorically. "I'll just explain to them who she is."

endejester
Balan...just...stops...and stares....and sighs.
"Shilah...I think...you will be the -perfect- person to talk to my Alpha about her." He nods slowly...You certanly have the rivers edge kind of reasoning."

dustfeather
"Okay, Balan," the puppy says submissively, seeming unconcerned with coming face-to-face with an alpha male. He scratches behind his ear again, demurely querrying, "When do we get to meet this One?"

endejester
Balan glances outside at the blackening sky
"Well...first we are going to have to wait out this storm...if the snow gets too deep I we will have a hard time walking through it and most smells and sight will be too vage...after that...then...well...Hige was supposed to come back...and give us news...but perhaps we shall present ourselves even if the news seems bad at first..."
He blinks his mismatched eyes and sighs...for a moment the almost icey layer of emotinal deadness shows again in his eyes as he gazes out into the storm...he turns back...and it seems to melt as ge gazes upon you.
"Im sure you will make a...lasting impresison"

dustfeather
The puppy looks up innocently into the blue and gold eyes of the adolescent, offering a slight wag of his tail in response. "That sounds good, Balan." Shilah has complete faith in Balan's abilities to sway this One in their favor - he's quite curious to meet the rest of the pack and see where Balan lives. But, for now, he's content to wait. He trundles off, looking more like a roly-poly fluffball than a regal canine, and curls up next to Kaya by the fire, the warmth lulling the puppy to sleep.

Ansata Myst
Noke followed a trail continuing her usual duty. Ever since Nyx had her puppies Akui and Noke were nearly constantly hunting. Not that she was complaining. She liked it, because she could go out and explore. She continued to pad through the forest until she heard something. Immediately she craned her neck around as amber orbs searched the foliage around her. Audits perked atop her crania, then a strange foul scent began to burn her nostrils. She had never met a "two legger" but she certaintly didn't want to. She took a step back unsuredly then took in the scent of another. This time it was something unmistakingly familiar, another wolf.

dustfeather
The blizzard has since gone down, and both Kaya and Shilah, restless as only the young can be at staying in one spot too often, have gotten bored and have disappeared out into the snow. With the human boy's coat - blisslessly ignoring the fact that he himself might be cold - Kaya doesn't mind going out. Since Balan has been sleeping, both children refused to go very much farther from the caves - Shilah knows his promise to talk to Balan's alpha will keep until Balan is ready to travel, or Feanaro or Hige returns. Until then, he's content to explore this area with his 'packmate.'

The two are gambooling in a small wooded area nearby. The weeks have wrought an alarming change in the young human girl. She's lean - one might almost say depravingly skinny - but has gained some muscletone. Her hair, not very neatly-kept before, is now all but in tangles. It looks like she cut it, too - but inexpertly. Her arms are now criss-crossed with numerous scars, some newly healed, others older.

Shilah pounces her, tusseling in the snow, but perks up as he sniffs something else around the area. His head raises curiously, tail twitching.

Ansata Myst
Noke stood where she was at puzzled at how she could of have gotten both scents, at the same time, with the same strength. Could my wolf-brethren ((she's calls every wolf her kin or brethren)) be in trouble? This thought made her extremely uneasy. Her nose sifted through the scents again. She finally got the nerve to approach. Her purple figure slinked across the ashen snow. It didn't take very long for the scents to overwhelm her nostrils. She then paused walking off the normal path into a patch of dead foliage and continued through there. Then she saw them, it was a very odd sight. Her fellow wolf-brethren was indeed not in trouble, but was walking with the "two-legger" Noke couldn't believe her eyes.

dustfeather
Shilah, alerted of the newcomer's presence, lets out a warning bark, ears flung forwards in curiousity as he pads out across the snow. Kaya rolls over and freezes slightly at the sight of the adolescent she-wolf, warily coming into a crouching position. She knows Soft Fur and Wind Call and Fire Whisper - her names for Balan, Feanaro, and Hige respectively - but she's never met a female of 'her' species before. Kaya is quite convined, at this point, that she's a wolf - a weird, two-legged wolf that's quite vulnerable to the elements, but a wolf nevertheless. She watches the newcomer, eyes slitted.

Shilah, however, offers a hesitant tail-wag, coupled with a yip of greeting as he nears the she-wolf, stopping a good distance away, his tail hung slightly lower in submission and good will.

Ansata Myst
Monenoke watched as the two finally realized her existence. Her optics narrowed on the "two legger", whom was crawling around like a wolf. Hackles raised slightly as a warning growl was emitted form her throat, but that was all. She then looked at the pup who obviously was submitting to her. Optics glanced back at the "two legger" she heard the yip, but thought nothing of it. The she-wolf stood for a second in a position ready to defend herself if need be. Hackles slowly fell fell and ears let up from pressing on her skull. Noke had heard terrible things about these, "two-leggers" Nyx said never to trust them, so Noke being one to respect Nyx didn't trust any of them. Noke walked up slowly to the pup and sniffed him then licked his face. Then backed off showing no greeting towards the "two-legger"

"Tell me why you bring a 'two-legger' into these parts?"

dustfeather
The odd, stripe-faced pup wags his tail harder at the lick. But the question - given the she-wolf's growl and Balan's frustrated attempt to convince Shilah of the same thing - is not altogether a surprise.

She's my pack-mate, the pup says, proudly, turning back to look at the human girl, who warily shows no signs of advancing upon Monenoke - whatever the child may be, she's not that stupid. That's Kaya. She's a wolf. I'm Shilah.

Ansata Myst
Monenoke frowned at the pup's comment. Noke turned her gaze towards the "two-legger", "That thing isn't of our kin..." She said slightly irritated and confused. She backed off several steps and sat on her haunches. Her gaze remained settled on Shilah. Noke shook her head, how could the pup think that it was one of them. "I'm Monenoke..." She said, her tail however did not wag. She would never dream of wagging her tail in a "two-leggers" presense.

dustfeather
The semi-striped pup looks just a bit put-out, but as if this was an attitude that it was slowly coming to terms with. "She's my packmate. She might look funny, but she's a wolf," the child explains patiently, as if lecturing a particularly recalcitrant child. But he leaves off there, flopping his belly into the snow gregariously, sensing no immediate threat from the purple she-wolf. "Do you live around here, Monenoke?" He questions curiously.

Ansata Myst
Monenoke shook her head yet a second time, "It's a two-legger under little clothing, that's what it is." She murmered knowing fully that the true saying was, 'a wolf in sheep's clothing.' Noke continued to watch the pup before tossing a nervous glance at the "two-legger." Noke paused before answering the question giving another cold gaze at the girl. What if, it can understand our tougue? She thought, What if when I answer this question it will go back to it's pack-land and tell them of our location. Then Nyx, Akui, Cheza, and the pups would be in danger. The fur on the back of her neck bristled at the thought. "Me? Nah, I'm just exploring."

dustfeather
The striped puppy blinks, bemused, just smiling a blank little smile. He looks slightly disheartened at the response, but perks up. "That's what we're doing, too. Well - us and Balan and Hige and Feanaro, anyways. Balan and Hige have a pack, but we have to go talk to the alphas yet." He scratches behind an ear with one hind leg absent-mindedly. "But for now we're just staying around here, 'tis nice, and Balan brings us food back. You haven't seen Hige or Feanaro, have you?" He querries, expectantly, perking up.

Ansata Myst
"Hige?" She murmored, remembering that name from somewhere. She searched the back of her memory for a wolf of such an aquaintance. She paused looking back at him, "I think I have seen Hige around somewhere, but it was awhile back." She said furthermore ignoring the pup's response with the blank smile before that comment. Noke looked at the pup, "Don't become too dependant on Balan, if something were to ever happen to him what would you do for food?" She said that from personal experience if it hadn't been for Akui she would've starved to death.

dustfeather
Shilah shakes his head. "Then it would've been too far back...he was with us until a bit ago, when he went back to his pack to talk to them. He'll be back sometime, though, I expect," He says, with the direct optimism that the very young seem to hold in endless reserves.

But at the statement, the child grow unnaturally serious. He fidgets slightly. "I know," He says, a brief flicker of fear leading him to sound annoyed. "Kaya can trap some small things, she's a better hunter than I am, and I'm...learning." That would be probably the best way to describe his less-than-lethal skills.

Ansata Myst
Noke nodded her head slightly as the pup told her about their hunting skills. Her orbs became slits at the mentioning to the "two-legger." She couldn't help it as her hackles raised slightly again as she shot another glance at it. "Do not rely on 'two-leggers' either..." She said sharply, relying on a pack was one thing as long as you put your share of the work into it. But relying on a "two-legger" was worse then anything else. She had heard plenty of stories of wolves and creatures of their like becoming corrupt and actually joining "two-legger" packs. They became inane and blunt not even able to catch the simplest of prey.

dustfeather
Why not? The puppy demands, in a mixture of curiousity and defensiveness. She's my packmate, of course I'll rely on her. She's got nimble paws, she's able to do things I can't, nor any other four-legged wolf. She can create warmth with her paws, too. A bit too stifling for his taste, but she must need it when she is in her furless state. She's magic, too, she can take off her fur when she needs to.

Ansata Myst
"Exactly my point, she is a 'two-legger' she is NOT one of us!" Noke's voice roared, hackles rose now. "Those are not paws, they are called 'hands' and that fur coat of it's is wolf pelt. They murder our kin, our brethren and you choose to call her one of us!" Noke said before turning her amber orbs towards the "two-legger." She growled before taking several steps back. "Don't you see, they have already corrupted you." With that Noke began to walk away.

dustfeather
The puppy blinks at Monenoke's outburst, ears flattening slightly, but he doesn't look too perturbed - in fact, it doesn't look like much would ruffle him unduly. But it's elk skin, He says, confused, nose wrinkling up. She took it from a lower-ranked member of our pack. The 'killing' part just confuses him more. Why would wolf want to kill wolf unless that wolf invaded a territory - and even then, deaths were rare. Usually only wolves, driven insane by some disease or other, had ever been killed, to his knowledge, anyways. She's not sick in the mind, he says, watching the she-wolf stalk off with a perplexed look, as if unaware as to what he had said wrong.

Ansata Myst
The wolves pup's comment made her angry, they were right about the "two-leggers." she thought to herself. The she-wolf was shivering slightly, but not because of the frosty air. It was moreso hurt and anger. She was hurt that the pup didn't even realize what/who the wolf kin was anymore and angry that Hige and the other's let the "two-legger" live. Noke felt instinct flood her veins, the urge to save that pup from the "two-legger" was great. Also revenge, revenge for all the hurt that the "two-legger's" have caused.

Noke looked up at the pup her orbs soft and sad looking, "One would hope that you would see the truth, but I fear that it is too late. I wonder what our ancestors would say if they saw you, one can only wonder." Compared to her outburst her words were soft the she-wolf gave the pup a nod. But as Noke turned she snapped out her jaws not to reach the "two legger," but moreso as a warning. As her jaws clenched thin air she turned and left traveling back towards the dead foliage, which had brought her here in the first place.

This would be the very day, in which Noke pledged her soul against mankind. She chose the wild path to live just like the ancestors before her. No, she'd never turn tail to rely on the "two-leggers" Noke then started to trot back up the path when she reached out of view she cocked her head back and released a cry. Tunes wavered in the air as each note rose and fell. Then when it seemed it would die away she released another and another. Finally it died, and she continued her way.

dustfeather
I dunno. The pup scratches behind his ear again, doubtfully. I'd think they'd probably not have much to say, being dead and all. Once you were dead, you were dead, that's how Shilah saw things. He bristles, however, as the she-wolf threatens his pack member, hackles raising slightly as he gets to all fours, glowering at her.

Kaya crouches, still, fingers touching the pommel of her knife. Her lambent dark eyes flicker in slight fear as the jaws snap towards her - a bit too close for comfort. But in a battle, she knows she'd be completely overwhelmed by the adolescent. I'll have to learn to fight, she thinks, grimly. Even if she has joined a pack, she'll have rankings...and won't be able to keep up any rank for long unless she can. She watches, apprehensive, as the purple wolf turns off, and disappears.

The puppy trundles over to her and nuzzles against her leg, nibbing it lightly in play. Even that brings up some blood - she playfully buffets him away, but is much more solemn, settling down onto the snow quietly.

In the brush outside, two forms move through the snow, tumbling out and spilling into the clearing just in front of the cavern. Both are breathless - the puppy with it's tongue lolling out, sides heaving, the 'two-legged wolf' chortling and laughing as, wild-eyed and jubilant, she makes it to the cavern ahead of him, collapsing in the entrance. He doesn't stop, but instead playfully jumps atop her, tail wagging furiously as he gnaws at an arm, scarred over already from days of similar rough play. Neither have gone entirely in the cave yet, but both are making more than enough commotion.

Tahja Estes

Hige stopped, lifting his head as a change of wind caught his nose. He nuzzled and looked to Loki and the others and said that he'd be back shortly, and wandered back in the direction of Fea's den, careful to step over Winter without giving her acess to his tail. ((*lol* XD *snuggles winter*))

He followed the scents, stronger as he grew closer, and finally stopped two yards away. He didn't want to test Feanaro's temper.

"Shilah!" He barked, calling to the pup.

dustfeather

At the sharp bark, both 'wolves' pause, coming quickly to attention. Shilah scrambles off of Kaya, ears pricked, and Kaya rolls into a crouch, rolling onto the balls of her feet.

The duo spot Hige, and move happily towards him - Shilah more quickly than his 'sibling,' who's still learning how to recognize the different barks and calls. It's probably going to be awhile before she can actually recognize each individual by it's call. But she spots Hige's familiar neck-ring, and relaxes.

Hi, Hige, the half-striped puppy says, tail offering the other a greeting.

Tahja Estes

Hige grinned a bit and let his own tail wag slightly for the pup and his sister to see that he meant no harm. They'd all have to remember that Kaya didn't understand their language well yet.

"Hey pup," Hige buffed a bit more softly. He lowered his head to nudge at Shilah in greeting. "You two are in good moods." He observed, amused, sparing a look up to Kaya as well in acknowledgement and hoping she'd realize it was safe to come closer.

endejester

Balan's ears perk with blatant glee to see the pair again.
"I was worried a little there...when you were gone...were you hunting?" Balan queeries. "This...is...Winter...we...just met...mind your tail" he says with a 'smile'

Stormy Hound

Soon she smelled another wolf on the wind.. and something else. It smelled like human, but like wolf at the same time. Her ears flicked back, Hige knows what he's doing. She looked over her shoulder to the grey wolf, seemingly trying to figure him out. "You had no pack before this, I suppose?"

Emilie_1983

Tsume looked at her, his nose in the air. He smelled something he couldn't identify, the scent was faint and very strange.

"I did have a pack once..." His answer was short and gruff, but with no menace towards her.

Stormy Hound

She nodded, but didn't really press the matter further. If his pack had met a similar fate as hers, he probably wouldn't care to discuss it with someone he only just met.

"There will be a two legged pup travelling with us. Hige, my mate, and Balan, a packbrother tells me she isn't like the pale humans that hunt wolves. She is with a wolfpup, and they seem to think they're siblings." she said, not wanting Tsume to find out by surprise. It was kind of strange after all, and not many wolves she knew would tolerate any mention of two leggeds.

endejester

Balan glances back towards they Grey.
"Im afraid they..would be traveling with us at my....behest...Shelah reminds me...of...someone I used to be."

dustfeather

We've been running around for most of the day, Shilah says, opening his muzzle in a good-natured canine grin. It's been good fun. All except for meeting that wolf...who didn't care for Kaya, nor Shilah's involvement with her. It doesn't so much upset the child as puzzle him, but he's not about to let Hige see the puzzlement. Better something he works out in his own head.

Kaya, assured of Hige's presense by sight identification, lightly dances nearer. She can't wag her tail or perk her ears to greet the male - but she offers a whimper that can be supposed to be a greeting, and crouches down beside Shilah.

Did you go see your pack? the puppy continues, leaning into Kaya's side. His gaze shifts suddenly towards Balan as he spots him, and his tail gives a furious wag of greeting. Hi Balan!

Emilie_1983

A two-legged. Tsume could even phanthom to hide his growl and dismay at that. He had dealt with them before and all they were is trouble. His ears went flat to his skull as he digested that bit of information.

It took him a few moments to calm down and think over that information. If these wolves trusted the two-legged... with a pup no less...

"Fine." He barely kept himself from snapping and relaxed a little, the growling stopped. "As long as it doesn't touch me..."

He could tollerate a human, somehow.

Stormy Hound

She snickered a bit, not really meaning to be an a**. "I won't let the two legger touch you, Tsume." She settled in, prepared to wait for Hige to explain everything to Shilah and the two legger. There really wasn't much more she could do, not wanting to rush up and scare the girl.

Emilie_1983

Tsume noticed Loki setteling down and slowly withdrew himself a bit with his rabbit. He was still hungry and not about to share his meager kill.

Only after he had eaten did he return and sit closer to the group, looking in the direction Hige had run off to.

Tahja Estes

Hige smiled. He could easily remember the days he'd spent playing in the woods, both before and after meeting Selia.

"Yeah, but it didn't go as well as I think Feanaro hoped." He said calmly, pausing to let Shilah digest this before going on. "Me and my mate, Loki, are starting a small pack, and we're going further south... to the big waters, the sea. It's warmer down there, though it's about siz moons travel. There's also a storm coming in, so we're going to take shelter until it passes... it shouldn't be more than a day." He somewhat rumbled reassuringly for Kaya, flicking his ear towards her and leaning over, snuffling at her hair and licking the top of her head before stepping back again. "We were hoping that you and your sister would want to come along with us... Balan and I will be there, as will Loki, possibly my younger brother Thayne... and another friend we just met, Tsume." He said, letting his eyes fall to the colorfully marked pup, waiting for an answer.

dustfeather

The child seems to digest this, tipping his head to one side. There, he'll be with a pack - and Kaya would be welcome - but for how long? Her progress would sorely slow the pack's movements...but Hige must know that already, else he wouldn't have asked.

What about the other two-legged wolf? He questions, after a moment of silence. Would he be able to come, too?

Tahja Estes

Hige seemed to frown a bit. That was a tough situation. He hadn't heard Feanaro's dismissal of the two-leggers, or he would've chanced going back for Hinto. He fought not to sigh. Such a sticky predicament, this was. "I'm not sure, Feanaro is none too pleased with us right now. It might just... be best to allow him to stay with Feanaro for now." They could come back for him after things had settled between them, perhaps if Fea saw that Kaya and Shilah did well on their own he would relax about the other human coming too.

dustfeather

Of course, that is just met with an innocently blank look. Why not? What'd we do to Feanaro? Shilah doesn't mind the boy staying with Feanaro - he's more curious as to what happened. He knew that there was some tension between the wolf and Hige and Balan...but he wasn't exactly sure what it was. What's been going on?

Tahja Estes

"Not you two," Hige reassured sheepishly, and quickly, then flicked his ear again a bit uncertain. "me, Loki, and Balan." He responded, simplifying the story. He surpressed another sigh, "We had a disagreement. It's nothing that can't blow over with time." He was a bit anxious now to get the young ones out of this weather. Kaya didn't have thick fur like the rest of them did after all. Hige wondered if she was cold...

dustfeather

Oh. A quiet, reflective pause. I hope he's okay. He has to be lonely. The puppy lifts his head and snuffles at the cold air. I'm guessing we're going to just leave him here, then, and go find some different shelter?

It's difficult to see who he's talking about - Hinto, or Feanaro. But the puppy is looking to Hige for instruction, brushy tail hanging loose.

endejester

Balan: "Im sure he will be fine...Agrivations of the sort are...just a fact...the...blind boy did not take shoulder as I left...I think he elected to stay with Fea"

Emilie_1983

Tsume blinked. Did he mean there were more than one two-legged. Wonderfull.

Tsume exhaled loudly but didn't make a further coment yet. He was determined to meet these new packmembers before passing judgment. Even though it was VERY hard to do.

Tahja Estes

Hige felt a stab of guilt. Yeah, Feanaro could be........ trying, but Hige wouldn't wish a life alone on anyone. Still, he had the blind-man-pup and Khalaria, though Hige still didn't know for sure if they could count Winter in or out of their pack. Seemed like everytime Hige got involved, he was respsonsible for a member of Feanaro's pack disappearing. First Loki, now Winter? Possibly Gaara and as a result Lexi? (Though Hige doesn't actually know that Lexi left, let alone that she was there. It's just xD;;; sadly amusing to point out.)

He looked gratefully to Balan, then back to the two young ones. "Yeah, our pack is going to head further south. Are you two up for it?" He gave them something of a small smirk now, amused and waiting to hear Shilah's answer.

dustfeather

The puppy doesn't seem to know how to respond to the smirk - his head tilts on it's side, and he seems to consider it. "Alright." After all, it's something to try out, being in a pack again - his and Kaya's pack.
