Dakin liked his house. He liked his room and his Aunt Franny and Uncle Archie. His mom didn't like any of those things, which is how he found himself in these situations.
"Go on," Madeline had said, tying his skates and pushing him toward the shiny wooden rink. "I'll be over here." Dakin looked over at his guardian now, expecting to see her sipping from the metal brick thing that smelled like burning, but Madeline was drinking a normal cup of Coke, her teeth worrying at the straw.
The boy flapped his wings suddenly and let go of the railing that was keeping him upright. From the ceiling, the disco ball barfed colors all over his pale tunic and shorts as he slowly rolled across the floor to the opposite wall, waiting for something to happen.

This was going to be so much fun! Lucille had been having fun at home with her new sister and her new mommies and the new maids that she apparently got with the new home, but she'd been wanting to go out and do something too. Something fun, something she'd never done before. So what happened? A maid suggested she go to a roller skating rink where she could also meet other children and have lots of fun!
After quite a bit of convincing Lucille had finally managed to get Claudine to bring her to the roller skating rink. They were standing at the edge of the rink at one of the entrances, Claudine holding Lucille's hand to keep her balanced on her skates while also holding her bear Gary in her free hand. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Claudine asked one more time as she pulled up Lucille, having seen her feet starting to wobble more unstably with the impending doom of her falling to the floor. Good thing she was here to stop that from happening. Lucille grinned up at Claudine and nodded, tugging her hand out of her mother's and slowly inching out into the rink.
"Uh huh! Bye bye, Mommy!" Lucille waved to Claudine as she slowly rolled away from the woman...slipping and falling on her bum not a second later. She cried out in surprise and stared at the skates that were not supposed to be in front of her like they were. That was fun! But this was a skating rink, not a sitting rink. Sighing, Claudine reluctantly walked to an area for her to sit at, watching Lucille like a hawk the entire time.
This wouldn't do. People weren't looking happy to have to veer out of the way to not hit her! With a determined look on her face she pushed herself up and wobbled forward again, slowly rolling across the rink. Oooh this was fun! She was too busy watching her feet to make sure she didn't fall, she didn't notice she was in a dangerously direct collision path with the winged boy heading her way.

Dakin, bored of watching people spin and giggle over nothing funny that he could see, turned his head just in time to get a faceful of red hair.
"Oof!" he oofed as he fell to the floor, the wind knocked out of him. He wanted to say he was sorry to the oddly familiar girl he had tripped over, but he didn't want to end up blurting out too much so he said nothing, attempting to get to his feet instead.
"You okay?" he eventually managed in his small, unused voice. Who knew if the girl would even be able to hear him over the noise everyone else was making? He reached out a hand in case she needed help.

Lucille was rolling unsteadily as it was, her arms outstretched to her sides for balanced and her eyes glued to her feet to watch for any sign of slipping, but then someone slammed into her! Her feet slipping out from under her, Lucille gasped and fell forward, landing on whoever had hit her. "Ow!" She cried, climbing off whoever she'd landed on and rubbing her eyes with her arm. Don't cry, it didn't really hurt much, it was an accident, you weren't watching where you were going, it was bound to happen eventually! Sniff.
Her fingers brushed against something soft and feathery as she crawled to the side to let whoever she'd crashed into stand, looking up when who she assumed was the one she had collided with asked her if she was okay. Whoa! That was the boy that'd lived with that funny man with her! But he'd left her so much longer before Claudine had taken her home. Lucille smiled and accepted the help up, wobbling a little on the skates and flailing her arms on either side of her for balance. "U-u-uh huh! You okay?" Who knew she'd find someone she recognized here! Even if she didn't really know him; neither of them had even had names!

"Dakin," he said quickly, bypassing her question about his level of okayness. If he answered, it would only lead to an epic amount of confusion. Better to get his name out before she asked him for it too. If she asked, he'd be forced to lie; if he just spouted it out, it wasn't the truth or a lie per se, just some word he was saying. Dakin was starting to learn the ins-and-outs of his little disability, but he hadn't mastered completely getting around it by any means. He often wondered if he had spoken more in Wylde's presence whether the man would have been able to fix him. Somehow the boy doubted it.
"Did someone get you?" he mumbled. "From the store?" He doubted she would waste her time in a roller skating rink if she didn't have parents, but it was infinitely easier for him to speak in questions.

Dakin? That wasn't an answer! It must have been his name then...weird! She hadn't even asked! Isn't that what you were supposed to do? Ask for names when you meet someone? It must have slipped Lucille's mind. She giggled and somehow managed to keep a steady balance, her arms still outstretched at her sides but no longer flailing. "Hi, Dakin!" She chirped, shifting her weight carefully from foot to foot.
"Yeah! My mommy!" Claudine was a nicer mommy than she thought she was. "You?" Hey! He'd totally ignored her question about if he was okay! He looked okay but that wasn't nice, what if he bumped his head or something? Lucille wanted the chance to apologize about not looking where she was going and bumping into Dakin! Sigh. Oh well.

"Uh...y...y... My mom's outside," he said with a nearly imperceptible wince. Stupid words. His wings folded against his back in agitation and he wobbled, almost losing his balance from the sudden shift in his center of gravity. Oh well. At least he had gotten Madeline's gender right, as far as he knew.
"Is your mom nice?"

"Outside? Weird!" Didn't mommies and daddies usually stay inside so they could watch over their kids? Hm...maybe she was wrong to assume that. Lucille gasped a little when Dakin wobbled and stumbled, reaching out to help him but instead sending herself straight to the floor with a loud 'Oof!' Owwwww! Her knee! She whimpered a little and sat on her bum, looking down at her knee. It was a little red, but it wasn't scraped or bleeding or anything.
Her mom? Lucille pondered the question for a minute. Was she nice? Well...she was told she was a monster, and someone had once muttered something about her being a 'slavedriving bish' whatever that meant. But Bernadette and Arianna always said good things about her! And she was so nice to her! So... "Yup! Is yours? My mommy's been buying me lots of stuff and I have a sister!"

Dakin's eyes widened as Lucille took another spill onto the rink. He crouched down beside her, managing to drop into a seated position without injuring himself. Her knee looked redder than it probably used to, but she wasn't crying or anything, so that was a plus.
Hmm. He might have guessed the question would be turned back to him, but how to answer? "Yes," he said. "Mad'line is very nice." He let out a small sigh of relief. While his guardian was a complete b***h to a large percentage of the population, she hadn't treated him with anything but a form of mildly positive indifference. Dakin supposed he had been allowed to speak of Madeline's false charity because he hadn't qualified the statement by saying she was nice to him. Convenient, but ill-timed.
Noticing that the winged boy was seated on the ground, in the path of many scowling skaters, Madeline got up from her own seat and approached the edge of the rink. "Hey!" she growled, waving her arms at the pair. "Dakin, get off the floor!"

Lucille didn't seem to notice they were in the way of people trying to skate in the rink as well, because none of them had hit them or stumbled around them; they were easily avoidable. It pleased her to hear that Dakin's new mommy was very nice, evident by the big smile on her face as she clapped her hands excitedly. Yay! They both had found really great new families! Well, not so much found as had been given to, but she wouldn't fault the nice man who had taken care of them. He had taken care of them, after all.
When a woman suddenly started calling at and waving her arms at them Lucille blinked and stared at her curiously. Huh? Why was she doing that? Claudine was looking at the woman with a look of amusement, supporting her head with her fist and just watching the pair. Lucille was content even with the falls to the floor, if she cried or if someone got too close she would be there to help her, but this woman seemed to have a different idea on parenting. It was fine, it gave Claudine less work later.
"Is that your mommy?" Lucille asked as she pointed at Madeline. She had said Dakin's name so she just had to be, right? Unsteadily, Lucille stood up again with her arms held out for balance. "Ah...uh...oh! Let's do it together!" This idea seemed brilliant to her! There were other people holding hands as they skated as well and their balance was perfect! That had to be the secret to this whole skating thing.

He squinted his eyes at his guardian and shook his head no. Maybe if he didn't confirm or deny that he knew Madeline aloud, Lucille wouldn't notice his answer. He rose to his feet as well, offering the other Thuk his hand. "I dunno. Maybe she heard when I talked to my mom before." Dakin's eyes grew slightly wider. Hey, that was almost the truth! Had Madeline somehow not been listening to her own voice when she was speaking to him earlier? Was it the maybe? He vowed to look into this pleasant surprise further at home.
A laughing woman and a more stoic young man breezed past and Dakin watched their feet. This skating thing was a sort of a push with one foot while bracing with the foot in the back motion, not the wing-flap-and-roll he had been attempting before. He gave it a try, still flapping his wings slightly to give him momentum. Wobbly, but he didn't feel the urge to fall just yet.
Madeline, satisfied that her kid was off of the floor even if he did appear to be ignoring her, backed away from the rink and plopped down in a nearby chair.

Oh...that was it? Oh, okay. How weird for a lady to call out the name of and yell at a child who wasn't her own! Lucille wobbled a bit with Dakin, watching him flap his wings and tilting her head curiously. Was her balance off because she didn't have wings? No fair! She wasn't born with wings like Dakin was! Hmmm...well her arms could be her wings? She flapped them a bit and nearly toppled over. "Wah!" Lucille cried out as she grabbed onto Dakin for balance.
She still fell, but she at least let go of Dakin as she did so she wouldn't drag him down with her this time. Oops! Blinking, she stared up at the ceiling as it lit up with colors from the lights all around the rink. Well...this wasn't right! Now she was determined to get this right. Lucille pouted and rolled over, standing back up. Dakin could do this, so could she! If only she could just borrow his wings or something.
