You have come to the Notebook of Yannay and Enya. Please do not post unless you have their permission.
About Brush Fires A wildfire, also known as a forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire, brush fire, bushfire (in Australia), or hill fire, is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wildland areas, but which can also consume houses or agricultural resources. Common causes include lightning, human carelessness and arson. Drought and the prevention of small forest fires are major contributors to extreme forest fires. Fires tend to happen during the summer in times of drought and the fall in times of winds. Today it is accepted that wildfires are a natural part of the ecosystem of wildlands, where, at the least, plants have evolved to survive fires by a variety of strategies (from possessing reserve shoots that sprout after a fire, to fire-resistant seeds), or even encourage fire (for example eucalypts contain flammable oils in the leaves) as a way to eliminate competition from less fire-tolerant species. The word "wildfire" originated as a synonym for Greek fire, a napalm-like substance used in medieval Europe as a naval weapon; the word attained its present meaning by a common misunderstanding of the expression "spread like wildfire". This BrushFire egg was received by Yannay on October 12th, 2005. Care of egg:
Keep it warm until it hatches. It should hatch in 5-10 days. Update: hatched October 30th!

Chasing Dreams Yannay bolted from the wooden bed that was painted black. There was a searing pain around her middle, and she began shouting "Fire, Fire!!!" The door to the bedroom was blasted open by her aunt who came running in, wild panic written all over her face. In her hands was a large bucket of icy cold water, in which she threw at Yannay without hesitation.
"Argggghhhhh!!!!" screamed Yannay. The icy cold water was beyond shock. Gasping, she threw the dripping covers aside and fell to the floor. Her aunt stood at the doorway, in an almost comically stance. Then-
"Where's the fire? There's NO fire. Look, nothing had even been burnt!!!!" she said in bewilderment.
The room was perfectly fine except for being very wet. There wasn?t even a trace of smoke.
"Oh dear child" her aunt shook her head, "You've been dreaming Yannay."
Yannay sat in the middle of the room and just looked at everything with her mouth wide open.
"Here," her aunt put the blue bucket down, "I'll clear up all the water and you just get changed ok? I?m sorry for drenching you and giving you a shocking wake up call. You scared me out of my mind!"
"Uh, yeah," Yannay replied slowly getting out of her shock. "Thank you, oh god I'm so sorry!"
"We'll both forgive each other" her aunt winked and walked out the room to get mops and towels.
Yannay walked slowly down the corridor towards the bathroom. She couldn't believe she had yelled out fire and caused the incredible drama. She was never one for mumbling when she was asleep or sleep walking. But the dream had seemed so real. No, is certainly didn't make sense but the sensations and feelings were real. On impulse, she inspected her stomach and was startled to find a red mark. "I was burned" Yannay wondered. Just then, the door bell ringed.
"I'll get it!" yelled Yannay.
She dashed to pull on dry clothes, tripping on the carpet and wrenching the door open in process. It was way too bright outside and Yannay saw sun spots, but not before she was pulled in a choking hug.
"Cal!" gasped Yannay.
She took a step back to look at the old lady in front of her. Cal was wearing one of her flowery pink shirts and holding a casket of chocolates. She grinned a toothy smile.
"I came to visit today" she declared.
"I..." Yannay stammered, "That's wonderful, we haven't seen you since..."
Yannay stopped and reality flooded to her. Gran had died a year ago. A tear leaked from one of her eyes.
"Oh no," Cal exclaimed, "I didn't mean to upset you!"
She took Yannay by the elbow and tried to comfort her.
"I'm sorry," Yannay said wiping her tears away, "I didn't mean to be so sensitive. It?s been a while and I have got over it, but it's just I had a dream about her, her being alive, and for some funny reason you were my friend instead of Gran's."
"Dreams huh? Yes, they can be like that." Cal said soothingly. "Here have a chocolate; I brought them for you especially since you love chocolate."
Yannay visibly brightened. "Oh, thank you," she said.
Yannay"s aunt poked her head through the door.
"Cal, how nice to see you," she exclaimed, "come in and have some tea."
"Yes, that would be nice," the old lady replied beaming.
"I'll just go and clear up my room, you know?" Yannay said quickly, "I join you later."
Yannay watched the two women walk down the corridor to the sunlit lounge. She signed and made her way to her own room. Yannay felt confused and sad. The dream was also making her feel a little frightened. She sat on her bed and stared at the carpet, listening to the sounds of two people drinking tea, that seemed so far away.
***
"What's wrong?" Cal was gently shaking her a moment later. Yannay could hear her aunt washing dishes in the kitchen.
?Do you think dreams can be sometimes, a little bit real?? Yannay asked abruptly.
?Do you believe in magic?? Cal asked.
?Well?? Yannay rubbed her sore stomach, ?Yes, I guess?.
?I believe in magic. So I guess anything is possible,? Cal said, ?Which brings me the topic I was hoping to get to today.? Cal reached into her pocket and pulled out a small steel box. ?Here,? she flipped it open and showed it to Yannay. Yannay stared at the box which was empty.
?What am I supposed to see?? she asked bewildered.
?You believe in magic?? Cal asked persistently.
?Yeah? Yannay said even more bewildered.
Cal frowned and peered into the box herself. She gave a great shout. ?It?s gone!!!!!!!?
?What?s gone?? Yannay gasped.
?Your present. Your Gran wanted to give you the present, told me to give it to you on this day so it?ll hatch on your birthday, and now it is GONE!!!?
?Gran? Present? Hatch?? Yannay squeaked.
?Your Gran wanted to give you a magical pet; a Wethkin sprite, she found in a burning bush fire up the South Hills. Well actually an offspring from that one.? Cal muttered.
?Hey?? Yannay said, trying to understand it all, ?I?I dreamed about that!?
?You dreamed about it?? Cal asked, now facing Yannay, her face with an odd stare.
?Yes,? Yannay clarified, ?I dreamed I got burnt and I did as well!?
Yannay showed Cal the red burn on her stomach. Cal stared and then threw her hands in the air and dived under the black painted bed.
?What!?? Yannay was immensely confused as she watched Cal vigorously clawing for something. Cal emerged a bit dusty and in her hand was a grey thing about the size of a small marble.
?This? Cal huffed, ?Is the thing that I was going to give you, and this has been causing your troubles!?
Yannay blinked at the dull ball. Cal blew at the thing in her hand and dust exploded in a shower of orange light. A glimmering ?marble? was pulsing with red light and dancing yellow flames.
?A Wethkin sprite egg?? Yannay breathed, awed by its beauty.
?Yep,? Cal agreed, ?and look it got hold of some Dream stuff, and some Real stuff.? Yannay saw a small transparent dark cloud with a solid green cube drifting on the surface of the egg.
?Or?? Cal peered harder and frowned, ?Something forced that bit of dark stuff onto it. Dream clouds aren?t generally dark?
Yannay stared at the egg and then at Cal.
?Cal, how do you know all this stuff??
?Oh,? Cal replied modestly ?you learn stuff every then and now?.
?What do I do with it? It doesn?t burn does it?? Yannay asked.
?No, not at all. Now this is a very special little pet, you take care of it well. It won?t be much of a bother, be kind to it, that?s all.?
?Ok?? Yannay took the ball of fire carefully into her own hands. It was very comforting. She felt she was holding a warm prickly bush.
Cal beamed. ?Well, there you go, you are very lucky that your Gran gave it to you. Hope you have a lovely time with it.? With that Cal walked out the room and left Yannay to stare in wonder at the beautiful egg.

Dreams come True Yannay was taken by surprise at Cal's abrupt leave. She wondered to the living room, still holding the fiery egg. Cal was no where to be seen. She came across her aunt who was wiping down the bench tops.
"Did you see where Cal went?" Yannay asked.
"Hmm?? I don't think anyone was here." her aunt replied busy twisting water out of the cloth.
"But....but" Yannay stammered, "Cal just visited and you had tea and everything!"
"Really", the figure with the blue apron turned to stare at Yannay with concern. "Yannay, you've had a pretty eventful morning, but this Cal did never visit." She just noticed the egg still glowing in Yannay's hands.
"What's that?" She peered more closely and gasped. "Its beautiful!"
"Its a wethkin sprite and I got it from Cal" Yannay replied.
Her aunt examined the egg and then looked up.
"It's a magic thing." she stated. Then looked at Yannay, "You know what? Funny things happen all the time. Maybe you were visited by this Cal and it gave you the egg."
"Maybe..." Yannay said slowly.

Dream and Reality Yannay sat hunched near her bed cradling the fiery ball in her hands. It was warm and threw flickering lights around her darkerned bedroom; all the lights were off. She glanced at the red figures of the electric alarm clock near her bed. It read 11:21pm.
She signed. The day had passed normally, but now she had to think about this egg. She had carried it everywhere with her and noticed with interest that not many people could see it. It must have been something with believing in magic. Magic. There was something nudging her mind and she couldn't sleep. And there was a trembling nauseating fear for something.
Yannay looked into the swirling flames of the Wethkin egg for comfort. Red, gold, orange colours were wriggling around and that"s when she saw it. A dark cloud and green cube.
"Oh no" Yannay whispered. "Cal said it was bad. And now I can't sleep because I'm afraid to have bad dreams again!"
The frightened girl looked hesitantly around, trying to see if anything would help her. Would Cal come again? She waited and listened keenly into the dark silence. How long Yannay hunched beside the wall listening and trembling with fear, she didn't know. The suffocating feelings increased until she couldn't stand it anymore. Anger surfaced briefly.
"Oh right" she whispered fiercely, "That's it! Im going to try and pry that stupid cloud out!"
She fumbled for a pen near the chest of drawers and held it near the egg like a net. She put it tentatively on one surface of the egg and waited. Waited for the cloud to come around. It reminded her of trying to scoop her goldfish out when she changed the tank water. On impulse, she whispered reassuringly to the egg "Don't worry it won't hurt".
She saw the dark cloud thing swim quickly around the curve of the egg, and she struck at it. The cloud was still there. Yannay cursed under her breath. She looked around for the dark cloud and was startled to find it without the green cube.
"Ah, yes!" Yannay hissed in delight. "Reality is gone." She laughed quietly at her comment. Now she just had to get rid of the bad dream. A nightmare was a better word.
It was slippery to pry out. After the tenth try, Yannay growled in frustration. The task was impossible and she was tired. She carefully thought over what she did accomplish. If the reality component was gone and smashed to pieces, then what would that mean? Dreams were sure to be there, but maybe it wouldn't be real? She wouldn't be burnt anymore? And besides, the tired part of her argued, the dream cloud was only on the surface; once the sprite hatched it would be no problem. The thought felt right and so Yannay gave up and crawled into bed. Before she fell heartily asleep, she placed the Wethkin egg tenderly on the drawers beside her.

Shadows... Yannay dreamed.
It was warm and cosy. Fire flickered all around. Although it was beautiful and safe, Yannay felt a restless urge to break out of it. ?Break out of what?? Yannay thought. She tried to move her head but she couldn?t. She tried to move her legs but she couldn't either. There was no panic or fear or pain. "That?s unusual," Yannay thought. Something inside her was growing warm. It grew hotter and hotter. "O wow ow" Yannay grumbled to herself. Suddenly it seemed her eyes were open wide. There was some glassy substance in front of her, and amid all the orange colours, she saw her own reflection. It was a red shapeless thing that was slowly twisting into a form. Repulsed and fascinated, Yannay watched. She saw two pointy things rise from the top, and felt them touch the top of the glassy room. It grew bigger and bigger until? SMASH, the roof burst open in a thousand glimmering red pieces. Cold air rushed past her. Terror gripped Yannay. In the background, a shrill voice was screaming.
*** Yannay bolted from her bed. Reality came flooding back. "Just another stupid dream,"she muttered to herself. She rubbed her eyes, flicked them open and froze. Red glass lay everywhere in her small bedroom. Some were still glowing white. The air was full of smoke. ?Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? A red blob on the dressing table was screaming out in a small shrill voice. Yannay realized it was her Wethkin. And it had hatched. The glorious and wonderful moment was snatched from her by its scream which was now growing louder. "Shhhhh!!!!" she hissed at it. She reached for the puff but before her hands clamped down on its mouth, the Wethkin dashed out of the way and dived into the blankets of the bed. "Hey!" Yannay cried indignantly. There was a low humming in the air and so Yannay looked up. The smoke had thinned and shadows were creeping up onto the walls. "Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" screamed Yannay. She scrambled up from the bed, rushed around it and pulled the light switch. Yellow electric light flooded the room, and Yannay sighed in relief. It was all normal now except the red glass. She cleared the glass as quickly as she could, and then leapt back into the bed with the light still on. She peered into the blankets. The puff was shivering by her side. "Awwww!" Yannay gathered the Wethkin close to her. "It's ok. It's gone." All her fear and annoyance disappeared. "I'll name you Enya, how 'bout that?" Yannay whispered. She stroked the puff until it calmed down and fell asleep.

Part B--The Puff--A note from Cal The next morning Yannay quickly got up to turn the light off that she had left on all night in case her aunt came to investigate. As she headed back to bed (since it was an early 7am on Saturday) a note fluttered onto her desk. Hey Yannay, I think your Wethkin might be cursed. Now don't panic, I think its quite ok otherwise your Gran would have never given it to you. Just be careful when it hatches (these things get stronger around then). I'll try and find out for you about the curse. Don't worry. CalFurious, Yannay tore the whole thing up.

The next morning “Good morning!” Yannay’s aunt called brightly from the kitchen. Yannay merely grunted and dumped herself on one of the stools near the kitchen table. It was about 9am now.
“What’s wrong?” her aunt actually looked rather alarmed. “Nothing,” Yannay muttered.
“I cooked you your favorite breakfast,” Aunt announced. Yannay sniffed the smell of pancakes, eggs and bacon. She managed a small smile.
“There!” Aunt said soothingly. “You should be happy!”
“Thanks,” Yannay replied. She peered into her pocket. Enya was quivering inside. Thinking the Wethkin would be hungry, Yannay stomped to the kitchen stove and grabbed some bacon strips and popped it onto a clean plate. She took the puff out and put it in front of the plate, - and waited. Her aunt smiled at the pair of them and then slipped out to the laundry room.
“Aren’t you hungry?” Yannay asked the Wethkin. Enya stood there looking at the food and didn’t do anything. Yannay peered more closely and to her alarm found that it was still quivering. The sight of her Wethkin looking as if it was frozen with fear made her think of the shadows and Cal’s note about the curse. No one could eat or do anything if it was so frightened. Yannay was angry again. She was feeling very protective of her new pet. “Ahhhrggg….” She gritted her teeth and made a silent oath to hunt down the curse and strangle it was her bare hands. Or something like that.
“Isn’t it a wonderful day?” Aunt strode into the room with an armful of wet clothes. Yannay didn’t answer.
“Come over with me,” Aunt gestured to Yannay. “We’ll go outside and hang out the washing in the absolutely beautiful sunshine.” Yannay stared at the woman suspiciously. Aunt was never like this; talking about how wonderful it was to do home chores.
“Are you coming?” Aunt demanded.
“I think, I’ll just eat some breakfast and go for a walk…” Yannay said faintly.
“Ah…that’s even better for you! Some fresh air!” Aunt said enthusiastically. Yannay shook her head, grabbed a pancake, grabbed Enya and headed out to the front door.
“Have fun!” called her aunt. “Go for a looooong walk ok?” “ Umm, yep,” muttered Yannay. She munched on her pancake and walked quickly away.

Walk in the woods “Where will I go?” Yannay asked herself. “The woods…” She nodded to herself. It was always quiet there and it would do her some good to think about everything. “Do we think we should go to the woods?” Yannay asked her Wethkin as well. Enya gave a tiny nod. It was still scared stiff from last night.
