About Monsoons and Rain
By definition, a monsoon is a seasonal wind. In fact, monsoon is thought to be derived from the Arabic word, "mausim" meaning "season" . Monsoon is a term representing a wind that blows from one direction for a period of the year and roughly the opposite direction for the remainder of the year. Depending on the direction of the wind, there may be very different weather and climate. A strong monsoon will produce excessive rains during the rainy season and consequently, severe flooding occurs.
Generally rain is water falling in drops from vapor condensed in the atmosphere. Typically made up of fresh water, rain falls as precipitation from clouds. The falling drops of water are considered rain if they are larger than 0.02 inches in diameter. In forecasts, rain usually implies that it will fall steadily over a period of time.
