Sovann hefted his newly repacked sack over his shoulder, searching out a familiar face from among the crowd. He was not content to sleep in the lonely cot once more, not when he knew full well one of his oldest and dearest friends was a candidate as well. He'd caught sight of him at the Touching, and he had decided that he was going to keep his friend closer company. "Oy, Okassis! Hssst." He had to whisper because it was still very early, and the other candidates probably wouldn't appreciate being bothered at this hour. He plopped himself down on the blond's bed, mussing up the furs in the process. "You made it. I didn't know if we both would, but we did- and we're here-" And he was so excited. It was the first time in several days that he'd seen a familiar face, and certainly the first time in awhile that he'd seen his trader friend. They only got to see each other twice a turn or so. It was irritating, real fardling irritating that he got to see his best friend so rarely, but there it was. If they both Impressed, though... now there was a thought.

The blonde youth had been absorbed in thought as he'd returned to the Candidate quarters, mind awhirl with possibilities and questions. Those eggs had been quite a sight, and more to the point, they'd... they'd rooted him. It was a feeling he'd never experienced before. He'd traveled around with the same wagons all his life, sure, but to actually have one place, to be able to say, "I will be here for the next many years"... just wow. It took Okassis a decent while to realize that his name was being called; and even turning, he squinted at Sovann for several seconds before the face clicked. It was one he'd seen many times over the past ten Turns or so - one of very few friends he'd kept outside of the Trader caravan. "... Sovann?" he asked, eyes going wide. "By the Egg, it is you!" Unlike his friend, Okassis had no sense of keeping his excitement dimmed down. In his mind, anyone who expected to sleep in the aftermath of the Candidates' Touching was a deadglow, anyway. Laughing jovially, he reaching out to clasp the other's hand. "It's unbelievable, is what it is! When did you get here?"

The excitement bubbled out of Sovann as he took his friend's hand. "It is! By Faranth's first egg, it's good to see you, Kas. I got here a day or two ago. I can't be sure. I haven't been keeping track too well. I've been out of my head with all of this. Can you believe it? We actually touched the dragon eggs... a full clutch of them!" When they had dreamed of standing on the Hatching sands together so long ago he wouldn't have believed it possible that they just might manage their dream. "It really is you. I thought I recognized you at the Touching." As he grew more excited his volume went up, and with it any sense of dignity vanished. He was a young lad again playing and rough housing with his year mates. "It's good to see you."

"I saw them," Okassis agreed, his voice muting. It was strange; usually, when something got him excited, he started getting louder and more outspoken, spilling out words like a torrent until the need for oxygen slowed him. There was something more serious in the youth's eyes now, if only for a second; then he was grinning, playing around like his usual self again.
"A day or two, huh? Shells, how'd it take us so long to run into each other! I got in... eh, less than a week ago. My bunk's over there," Okassis nodded to it. "Geez, but what're we hanging around here for? C'mon, you haven't had breakfast yet, have you? Let's go get a bite, catch up! I've got stories for you, you'd better believe, and it looks like you might have a couple of your own by now, huh?"

Sovann plopped his belongings down haphazardly, deciding that if someone wanted to rifle through his things they could deal with the consequences. "I decided I wanted to bunk with you." Not for a moment had he considered the idea that Okassis might not want to be so close to him, as physical as Sovann was inclined to be, but it really didn't matter. He didn't much care what Kas said, so long as it wasn't no on the sleeping issue. "Dunno. I've been busy just, you know, drinking it in. It's more than I ever imagined- well, that's a lie, but Shards Okassis, this is everything we wanted, isn't it? Going to the Weyr, slated for a Hatching." The two of them both absolutely certain that they deserved an egg, of course. A dragonet of their very own. "I haven't had breakfast, or even a cup of Klah. I'd kill for that." They might as well go now so as to halt any impromptu homicides.

Given Okassis's beaming nod, it didn't seem like he was the slightest bit perturbed for having Sovann as his bunkmate. Waiting impatiently for the other to drop off his stuff (not like it actually took a lot of time, but Okassis had to be dramatic about it anyway). As soon as Sovann was ready, he started walking toward the mess hall, seeming fairly confident by now of where he was going.
"Klah, huh? When'd you start drinking that stuff?" he asked, wrinkling his nose and drawing in conspiratorially. "One Hold I went to, there's this shop that makes that stuff with crushed-up bug legs. True story. The locals said it gave it some kick." The youth was grinning again, but it was hard to tell when he was doing that habitually, and when he was actually just teasing.

"Faaauuugh! That's disgusting!" And naturally, had Sovann encountered that, he would've had to have tried it. Sovann would try anything on a dare, and unfortunately Okassis knew that. Knew it and used it to cause all sorts of mischief. It wasn't that Sovann wasn't bright, it was just that his thirst for adventure got to him every time. "Did it give a kick?" he asked, a grin running from ear to ear. "You did try it, didn't you?" If Okassis hadn't, that would be room enough to call him a coward, afraid of everything as usual. ... Not that he was, but it was fun to say so, and to see what Kas might do about it. They tended to get into tussles more often than not, and while that was not something that impacted their friendship, it looked like the blond wasn't ready for a scrape right about now. "At Turns end," Sovann said, stretching a little. "When they sent me off to that seahold. I had to get up real early."

"Me, drink klah? Eugh, c'mon! That stuff is for Holdfolk," Okassis replied haughtily. "Out on the road, the sun's enough to get us up!... most of us, anyway." Never mind the fact that Okassis himself had never once been a morning person, and considering the sun his mortal enemy until the afternoon.
Thoughtfully, he added, "My sister gave it a shot, though, and there's somebody who never needs klah; she was wired the whole day. So maybe it did have a kick, huh? Ah, but don't let them catch wind of that around here- they'll start sneaking it into all the klah if they think it'll make people work harder!" Okassis snorted derisively. "Got a bunch of softshells here, Sovann. I think some of these folk haven't ever held a tool before coming to the Weyr. It's no wonder they'd got to have so many people around, otherwise nothing would ever get done!"

"I can't get up without the stuff," Sovann grumbled, shoving Okassis lightly with his shoulder. "Sun or no sun. It's too fardling early to be moving, and I'd rather not find out how my temper fares here without it. Seems like we've got to get up early, just like at the hold." Soft folk, folk with marks set Sovann's teeth on edge. He couldn't see the use in them, if they didn't know the first thing about work of any kind. Shells, it was one thing when a man worked his way up to the top from the bottom, at least then he knew what was what- but quite another when some lazy holder's brat was put in to work with real folk. "Did she? Good for her! And you're right, we'd be better off not mentioning it about."

Oh, Sovann just had to give him that push. That was a challenge, and Okassis knew it. His eyes glinted, and his grin turned devilish. Pushing a bit harder at the back of his friend's shoulder, he commented loudly, "Of course, I don't drink Klah anyway, so it wouldn't really affect me if I let it slip to somebody. Hey, it might do some real good, right?"

"Kaaaas!" Sovann protested, tugging at Okassis' sleeve slightly. "Hey, hey settle down before you wake someone important." Sure as shells, anyone who could sleep in now was probably someone they didn't want to wake up. "You deadglow! You're going to wake the whole Weyr!" He wasn't serious, though. He liked Okassis far too much to be serious with his insults. "Say that again, I dare you!" Of course, daring Kas was asking for trouble. And there was the problem, right there. Sovann liked playing with fire. If he could push his friend into misbehaving, he probably would.

"Oh, c'mon. Anyone who's slept through Touching deserves to get woken up by a bunch of loud-mouthed Candidates," Okassis protested, snickering. "I like to think that I'm just providing variety by not waxing on about how perfectly the light was reflecting off that egg, you know THAT one, the one that's absolutely guaranteed to Look to me!"
"Say it again? Why would I say it again? To you, anyway." His grin was nearly wide enough to swallow up his face now. "We're headed by the kitchens anyway - I'll just pop in, have a few quick words with the cook...."

"Oh you will, will you? And do you think the cook's gonna listen to a young scrap like you?" Of course both of them qualified for that, but Sovann was absolutely certain that the cook would listen to him if he said something. It wasn't his story to tell, though. It was Okassis', like usual, and Kas was likely teasing him. The question remained as to whether or not that teasing would stay teasing. Would he manage the feat, or would he back down, and pretend that nothing had happened? Sovann didn't much care either way, really. He was just hungry and feeling feisty this morning. Seeing the eggs, touching the eggs had given him enough energy to last for a seven day, not that he needed it. "Oh, of course Okassis... but really, you ought to be waxing on about how perfectly the light was reflecting off of the egg that was guaranteed to Look to me, and not jabbering about some bug's legs!"

As always, duty had warred with pleasure, and Inaari was dragging her heels back to the Lower Caverns to help with the evening meal. She was one of the few Candidates who had actually shown a real proficiency in the kitchen, and as such, was kept close to it for her duties. If she Impressed, she'd get out of the place, but really, it wasn't so bad.
The ladies were very nice, and she was useful. That, and it was a great way to sneak out extra food when no one was looking. The stockpile she had in her belongings alone was fantastic for early morning meals, or a quick snack before heading out into the outer Weyr.
Brushing past two of the older boys, she couldn't help but hear the conversation as she retreated, and whirled suddenly, hair whipping out behind her. "Did you say you wanted klah?"

"Oh, to you, is it?" Okassis had began laughing, when a younger girl suddenly interjected into the conversation. For half a beat, he could only stare dumbfounded, trying to make sense of why she'd cut into their chatter - then his eyes widened with a vicious joy. His elbow suddenly jabbed to his friend's stomach, trying to keep Sovann quiet while he purred, "Well, sort of. See, my friend is from this real small Hold, and they've got this special sort of klah there. It's got this special kick, you see...."
