River was displeased. Seriously displeased. Life had looked so good when she was a hatchling, newly ready for life. The world was her oyster; dragons taking care of her, prepared to teach her everything they knew. No responsibilities, nothing to worry about, no problems at all. Life had gotten even better when she met Atum; that stuffy old Achat had brought in good luck she had thought at the time. Atum was just like her...except...male. And almost, though not quite, as good looking. Life got better; she was expected to do more, but no one forced her to reach those expectations. She was allowed to laze around all day, doing nothing, hanging out with Atum...until Atum had had that stupid, stupid idea! Now she was a mother of two boys, and Atum was her ex-best friend.

She was bitter. So bitter...it made her want to destroy something...preferably all males (except her boys; they were perfect little children, especially Mackenzie...anway...). But now she was lost. She couldn't find Atum at all; where could he be? Where could that lousy a*****e be?! River sighed in frustration and sat down in a huff in a lonely clearing far away from everything she knew and far away from her only family.

Merrick wandered slowly through the undergrowth thinking. Still conflicted from the confusing and tangled emotions that swirled around him about Blazoned. He let out a sigh and hopped over a fallen tree trunk and made his way to the clearing he used when he needed to think.

He looked up as he stepped into it and froze. There in the middle of the clearing was a yellow and blue female. Merrick swallowed, his eyes going wide as he stared at her. He'd never seen a female before...and though most males his age would have been moved to flaunt before the attractive fem, the emotion he felt most was fear.

Where did she come from!? Why is she here!? How did she get here!? The questions tumbled quickly one right after the other in his head and he shivered slightly with an effort to not run away. He backed away slowly hoping to avoid a confrontation with the female but winced as his back foot broke a twig shattering the near silence of the clearing.

River glared at the sky as if the sun was laughing at her. Of course it was! All of nature was laughing at her! So angry and so humiliated at her ruined life, she barely noticed anything going on around her. The flash of black and white fur at the corner of her eye barely registered until she heard the snap of a twig. Her head swung around to see the male dragon sitting not too far away. The very image of the sex she hated! Handsome, bold, bright. She hid a look of disgust swiftly, a cruel idea forming in her head.

I'm still pretty, and judging by the look on his face, he knows I am. I think I'll play with him... Her face suddenly took on a sorrowful expression and she bowed her head in shame that was almost, though not quite, faked. Her head and shoulders shook with sorrow and loneliness and she wrapped her tail around herself. She hoped he would come closer...she had this sadistic urge to break somebody's heart.

Merrick watched the female and then tilted his head as she started to shake. He considered his options and the hesitantly stepped forward and then crept closer to the female and peered down at her wondering what could have upset her. He hoped it wasn't him, no matter what, Merrick didn't think of himself as very imposing. He was a little undersized and built for speed not strength. That was Blaze's job.

He reached out hesitantly and touched her shoulder radiating concern and hoped she'd get the message and not think he was trying to hurt her.

River jumped as if she were frightened of him, getting swiftly to her feet and backing away, her eyes wide as she stared at him, shaking again. "Please don't hurt me!" she said with a dry sob. "Please, I didn't mean any harm! I'm sorry I invaded your territory, I'll leave now if you'd like!" She turned hesitantly away, trembling as violently as she could make herself before collapsing into a ball, sobbing. It was pathetic, she knew, but that was the part she was going to play; so far, it was going to plan.

Blazoned closed his jaws swiftly around the shining trout, holding it firmly up in the air. He felt hungry, but he was fairly certain that Merrick might be hungrier. Merrick. His best friend, adopted brother...or was he something more? He found his thoughts turning to his handsome companion more and more these days. What do I think of him? he wondered. I wish I knew...I feel like I never know these days. Is he my brother? Or...could he be something more? He skittered away from the word that popped up, the one that started with l. Instead his shook his head and looked for Merrick. He would surely be in his clearing.

Merrick recoiled away from the fem as well surprised at her reaction. He crooned quietly at her trying to sooth her and hoped she'd calm down. He also wished that Blaze was here. He'd be able to ask her directly what was wrong while Merrick was forced to use gestures and hope that others got his message. He watched her with big sad eyes wishing she'd look at him so he could make himself better understood but figured that she wouldn't and he'd be forced to go over to her again.

He sighed and looked around his ears quirking as he picked up the sound of paws on the leaf loam. He hoped that was Blaze coming to find him and help him sort this mess out.

Blaze peered into the clearing, frowning at the sight of the yellow female. He had never seen a female before, but she smelled...different. He wasn't sure if it was a good smell or a bad smell, a good different or a bad different...a few weeks ago, he would have said good. Females were supposed to smell good, right? But she didn't smell as good as Merrick did...there was something off. She didn't seem right to him.

Probably just the fish, he decided. "Here, Merrick," he murmured. "I thought you might like something to eat." He set the trout down at his friend's face, his tail unconsciously brushing along his side. He trotted over to the female. She appeared to be in distress. "Er...My name's Blazoned..." he said stiffly."

River's ears flicked at the sound of the approach of the other dragon. A male, by the scent. Remembering to keep up the disguise of the traumatized girl, she flinched. "My name's...River..." she sobbed brokenly.

Merrick smiled at Blaze and nodded that he was hungry before shrugging and indicating the female and his complete loss of what to do about her. He shivered as Blaze's tail ran along his side and he surpressed the urge to purr and rumble at the other male.

He watched somewhat absently as Blaze approached the fem and quickly and carefully disposed of the fish. He supposed if the fem was hungry they could find her something later, but from what Merrick had seen of her she had other things on her mind besides food.

Blaze was at a loss for how to deal with the female. "Nice to meet you, River," he replied uncertainly. "You look like you're in distress...what happened?" When she stared at him, eyes going even wider, he took a few steps back and laid down, hoping to look as non-threatening as possible. "I won't hurt you," he added. "My brother Merrick and I would never hurt anyone. Especially not someone we don't know." He watched her curiously. She was pretty...the sort of dragon that a male was supposed to fall in love with. But for some reason...he didn't find himself feeling anything but curiosity. He shook his head. Maybe the feeling would come later...that was what was meant to be, right?

River had to fight back the smirk that rose up in her at the foolish male's words. If you knew what I was doing, you idiot, you would chase me away...you have no idea what you're dealing with. "I...I lived with my father's pack since I was hatched..." she sobbed, making up the story as she went along. "My father's friend lived with him in the pack...He had a son...and his son..."

River was shocked to find deep within her a part of her that cringed at the lie. It was so base...so obvious...That part of her wanted this Blazoned to figure out that she was lying...He is a male, an enemy, slave to his desires. It's time I showed them all who the real boss is.

Merrick hung back and watched Blaze and the female who called herself River. He mused upon her and then shrugged when he found that everything he'd ever understood about females and desire just wasn't true. He felt absolutely no attraction to the female at all. Which was strange...wasn't he supposed to? But as his eyes drifted over to Blaze all those feelings welled up and threatened to overwhelm him. He pushed them all back down again and shook his head as he listened to the female.

He gasped slightly as she told her story and crooned in reassurance that she wouldn't be hurt and dug is paws into the loam wanting to rip at the male who'd hurt her. Even if he felt to attraction to her, it was still wrong for anyone to have hurt the female especially in that way.

((River is such a Cathy figure...xD I guess great minds think alike, ne?))

Frowning angrily, Blaze tried to keep a growl from pouring out his lips. "Where was this pack? Who did it to you? Are you alright now? When did it happen?" Blaze felt himself filled with outrage for a pack that allowed this to happen to any dragon. He could imagine the dragon, huge, towering, smelling of blood and sweat, rearing up from behind to shadow the white mane...

White? Her mane isn't white...It's blue...her mane is blue, not white...why do I imagine the victim with a white mane? I mean blue! He shook his head vigorously. Doesn't matter! he told himself while some other part of him said it did. "Are you hungry, River? Maybe you should stay here for a while."

So the grey idiot with the flame-marked stomach was hooked. River sneaked a glance at the other, the quiet one who called himself Merrick. He seemed to change a little as he looked at Blaze. It was all she could do to keep a smirk to herself. Play them both against each other, twist it around every time she was alone with them. She could play that game. "I...I don't know...it was so long ago...he was much older than me..." She forced a violent shiver. "It was a long way away from here, though...I've been wandering ever since..." The next River whispered. "Today is the anniversary...I've been having nightmares for weeks."

Merrick crooned quietly at the female hoping to comfort her. He looked over at Blaze and dipped his head giving silent consent for the female to stay. She needed...well he wasn't sure what she needed but it was most definitely something. Protection, Perhaps? He wasn't sure.

He got up quietly and made his way back to the den in order to tidy it up a bit. It got quite messy with only two males living in it, and they didn't always think to freshen it up everyday.

He'd let Blaze talk to the female as he was the only one who would talk to someone anyway.

Blaze gazed longingly after Merrick. He understood why his companion had left; he hardly spoke to anyone. Blaze didn't remember him ever uttering a single word in his entire life. It wasn't surprising that he wouldn't enjoy someone else's company. I just wish he didn't have to leave...I don't want to be alone with her...

But shouldn't a male want to be alone with a female? Not that he wanted to hurt her again...but why wasn't he feeling the way he was supposed to? Why didn't anything ever happen the way it was supposed to happen? "You can stay as long as you like, River. Don't worry about imposing," he said quickly as she opened her mouth. "It's not often we get company...in fact, we never get company." He smiled foolishly and lowered his head so as not to appear threatening.

Alone with Blaze, I'll claim that Merrick wants me but I want Blaze. Alone with Merrick, other way around. Let's see if that works. Blaze seems stupid enough to fall for it. "Oh, thank you, thank you!" River cried. She threw herself on the startled grey and orange male. "I promise, I'll make it up to you, thank you, Blaze!" With that, she nuzzled his neck softly, just to seal the deal.
